Keep soft key mod while changing battery icon - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hey gang. Searched for an answer to this but couldn't find it, so was hoping someone could provide some insight.
I'm running vicious 4.1.1 on my verizon galaxy nexus. the other day i modded my soft keys, and last night i modded my battery icon. in flashing the battery icon w/clockwork mod recovery, the phone returned to the stock soft keys. so then i went back to re-do the soft keys and the battery returned to stock.
is there something i should be doing when flashing new mods to ensure the old ones stay in place?
thanks!

Are they mods applied through ZipThemer? There's a way to have both mods applied through ZT if that's the case.
If not, then just make sure the images for the nav keys are in the SystemUI.apk containing the battery images or vice versa, push the apk to system/app, set permissions, reboot, and you're good to go.

i flashed the zips through clockwork mod recovery. just went to see if i could do it w/zipthemer, but it said it couldn't find a theme within the files.
as for your second set of instructions, just went right over my head. i'm new to this whole process as i just unlocked and rooted about a week ago.
if i unzip the mod files on my comp, will that give me access to the apk file? how do i look at what's in the apk? a search told me ninjamorph - is that what you'd recommend?
sorry for all the extra questions. like i said - still feeling my way around.

Send me both mods. I'll combine the images for you.

Well if the files weren't originally meant to be applied through ZT they wouldn't work.
I'm guessing you're going to take up Zeinzu's offer, but if you still want more clarification about my earlier suggestion, feel free to ask.

if you can provide some more clarification that would be great as i'm sure i'll run into this again as i get deeper and deeper into modding my nexus.

Circle Battery Icon for the HTC Evo

Does anyone know of the circle battery icon with the percentage in the middle that works with the Evo. I've tried a couple but when my phone reboots, I get all these errors. Has anyone else with an Evo tried or have successfully done this? Here is my software info:

Kernel version: 2.6.29-789bf291 ([email protected] #1)
Build number: DamageControl v3.2.2

Is there one that's not in a rom? Because I really like my rom that I have right now.
Search the EVO forum for Super Circle Battery Mod w/%. Also, see if your ROM is de-odexed. I was able to flash this to my EVO with Fresh 3.3.0.1, which is de-odexed.
(I would link the thread directly, but new accounts can't post links. Find post 17 by lovethyEVO.)
make sure you do a back up, some roms gave me a bootloop using it

Heres is one I put together and use on my evo. It is the stock theme so if you have a custom one, youll have to send me your framwork-res.apk and i can customise it to work for you.

Its 1% increments
100-30%: green
29-15%: orange
15-0%: red
just flash via recov and make a nandroid backup first.
Go here for the Super Circle Battery mod. Follow instructions in the second post - as long as you're running a deodexed rom, you should be fine.

Within the apk, theres 3 XML files you have to change also (2 for decharging and the other for charging).
I made it easy so you can just download them xml files and place in the framework-res/res/drawable/ folder replacing all 3 files.

sorry i hadn't gotten back before. apparently when you post through xda app it doesnt subscribe you so i didnt know you had answered!
i just added your xml files and flashed the apk. no bootlooping, no errors, no complains from the os at all...but now it doesnt show the battery at all! it has an empty space where the battery would be.
the images i have are different from yours (normal battery with percentage in it) but they're named exactly as your images. and i also put your xml files. is your services.jar file connected to the whole process? what would make the battery icon not show up while not giving any errors?
i'm on OMJ v3.1 ODEXED....i know it's supposed to work on a deodexed rom but i'm trying to make it work without changing my rom! I HAD IT WORKING ON THIS ROM BEFORE...then after some update or change I made when i flashed the file back it put my phone to bootloop. so i couldn't use the flashable .zip i was working with before
Idk but if u can figure out how to get rid of the battery on an odexed rom on purpose thats something alot of ppl have been asking for lol still a win for all the stock rom guys that run a percentage app
sent from a pineapple under the sea
that'd be nice and dandy if it would remove the battery and the space where the battery went. but this just removes the image of the battery...but the space is still there. so now between the clock and the signal strength there is an empty space!
i just copy/pasted the same three xml files but from the original apk i used before and same result. no crash, but no battery showing. now i put back the working apk i had, which has the same files but without those three modified xml files and my battery is back.
it only shows percentages for 80, 60, 40, etc...not the intermediate steps, even though the pictures are there.
Guys try this, it has been made easy for all of us.... with choices http://circle.glx.nl/

[Q] De-Odex Stock Rom?

Hi, I would like to De-Odex the rom I currently have on my phone.
Is there an easy way to do this?
I've read:
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/xeudoxus/47283-release-xultimate.html
and
http://www.droidxforums.com/forum/droid-x-themes/4620-how-manually-deodex-your-phone.html (there is also a post about this on here)
The xUltimate tool will not work for me, so I need another option.
Phone: HTC Evo
ROM: Stock 3.29 OTA
Rooted (ofc)
Thanks for the help.
Sorry if this is no help, but a deodexed version of the 3.29 OTA is posted somewhere in the dev section. Is there a particular reason why you want to deodex it yourself?

I've been switching between roms but I keep coming back to my original stock one. It's still odex'd and I would like to theme the battery icon on the status bar without having to set everything back up on a fresh rom. Since it reads half when 80% of my battery is remaining.
Thanks for the quick response.

It wasn't that it didn't work.
I just got an error with Java, not sure how to fix it. Some said to re install java, but i've installed JRE and JDK from 5u20 to 6u21 (32 and 64 bit). Everything I tried gave the same error.
I am going to try asking on their forum and see if they can tell me what I did wrong.
I have a feeling it has to do with the 3.29 OTA update. :-/
Good luck and if you get it to work please let me know your setup.
and if you can't run step 3 let me know... that way I am not the only one to seem that crazy.
option 1 and 2 just adb pulls your /system/apps and your framework.
just got stuck starting option 3:
Starting AccountSyncManager.odex
*Deodexing...
Error occurred while loading boot class path files. Aborting.
org.jf.dexlib.Code.Analysis.ClassPath$ClassNotFoundException....
lower it says
at org.jf.baksmali.baksmali.dissambleDexFile(baksmali.java:103)
and it just gives some more errors until i close it down
i was sooo excited to get this done!
Ahhh! I'll see what I can find out on their forums.
Despite the tutorial saying "Manually De-Odex Your Phone" I think it may be just for droid phones. It was posted in the Moto Droid sections of the forums.
Here is the error I was getting:

Both our problems have "org.jf.baksmali" involved.
Hopefully we'll have some answers soon.
well i ran a test and everything said pass, including the odex and deodex. i installed the latest java, and same problem. i had the phone originally as mass storage, so i tried under charge only, and still same problem.
i really hope we get a solution to this
I did some more reading and it seems that app is designed specifically for droid x phones.
I'm now going to try a more hands on approach using avabox...will update tonight.

Were you able to get it DeOdexed?
I found this after some searching... It seems to be the LONG way to deodex an apk. It was written in 2009 so idk how reliable it will be.
http://androidnetwork.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=55
Edit: Link to Avabox: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=697459
[UPDATE] I tried Avabox and it de-odexed all of the files that I adb pulled. I copied the De-Odexed files back to their respective folder on the /system/, and deleted "rm /system/app/*.odex" (Removing all the .odex files) and rebooted.
I got stuck on the white "HTC Evo 4G" screen and could not get passed it.
I am not sure what I messed up. Maybe I need to resign the files? I'll try that tomorrow.
Let me know how your attempt went. :]
When I left for school I left the script deodexing my app folder...it seems to have done the job and there were no errors. It's doing the process for the framework files now.
Once I move it over to the phone we 'll see if it worked...
I'll update here when I find out...
Swyped from an HTC Evo on MetroPCS...
i just tried that too and i got stock in a bootloop.
the avabox script does deodex all the app files. it doesn't do that for the framework files...it seems it'll only deodex .apk files.
anyways, i deleted everything from my /system/app folder and then pushed over the deodexed apks...i also did this for the two apk files from system/framework and the phone did the bootloop thing. so i put back the original /system/framework files, effectively only leaving changed the contents of /framework/app/ and still, bootlooping.
i'm restoring right now...i'll try it some more at another time.
let me know if you figure it out!
I was reading some of the comments on this thread(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=598026) They we're saying about problems with de-odexing the framework.
Do we need to resign system apps before we push them back?
I am optimizing my apks now, going to batch resign then try putting just the apks back on.
Well I messages avalaunchmods asking the same thing...if anyone knows it should be him...
Update if you get it working please!
Swyped from an HTC Evo on MetroPCS...
Unfortunately, I still don't have any good news. :[
I tried resigning the de-odexed apk's and replacing the ones on my phone.
This got stuck at the white HTC Evo 4G screen.
This failed
Then I optimized, signed, and zipaligned.
This threw me into an actual boot loop. (I was excited... It's the first boot loop i've gotten.)
This failed.
Here is some semi-less-bad news.
I used http://circle.glx.nl/ to make a flashable update.zip for theme-ing. I Flashed it with success and was able to get to the lock screen. Sense UI along with just about every other system app kept force closing.
But I was able to successfully (even though I got FC's) theme and boot using that kitchen.
I am going to mess around with the different settings there and see if I can atleast theme my phone.
Any luck with your attempts?
i was at school all day - no news from me. this is very discouraging though.
i'm surprised nobody else has chimed in! considering how many people are making and releasing roms, some people must know what's going on here
Good news (kinda)
I was able to theme my framework-res.apk without any errors or FC's.
I didn't do anything to De-Odex it but it accepted the theme when I manually edited it.
There must be an xml that scripts how the battery is displaying %'s
since I have 89% of my battery remaining but the themed battery is showing 80%.
I'll dig around and see where it is and add it to my next framework recompile.
We're you interested in just themeing or the whole de-odexing (apps & framework)
If you want to theme it i'll write up a decent tutorial on what I did.
If not I'll write up a quick tutorial for the next root newbie who wants to theme.
Going to test run it and make sure I didn't mess much up.
Edit3: The bad, it would appear that you can't modify the .xml's of the framework. You can only change the pictures.
So the battery wont be able to have the exact %.
Modifying of any .xml leads me to a boot loop.
Tips are appreciated on fixing this.
I'll keep trying.
so here is what i've learned.
i had modified both .com.htc.resources and framework-res before. those files, at least in my rom, are not odexed. everything else in the framework folder is a mix of files, .jar files and other formats, including services.jar, which is odexed. that's why if we change the services.jar file, without the phone being deodexed, it wont work.
that's why i want to deodex my rom. i have too many changes already and dont want to re-do them in another, deodexed rom.
my main interest in deodexing the rom is to have the working battery percentage on top (which used to work on THIS rom before, without deodexing???) and to have a transparent notification tray.
and from there being able to make any other changes as they come up...
i'll see when i have some more time to try out other options, but chances are you will have time before me, so keep updating!

Custom Theming?

I am hoping to learn how to just be able to edit my themes of other peoples, then learn how to make my own themes from scratch. Could anyone point me to a general direction on how to get started?
i found this, http://www.androidevolve.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=3&Itemid=10, but it seems a bit outdated and a bit hard to follow. I am pretty decent when it comes to phone technology and computer smarts, but i cannot find a decent guide to help me with theming. Would anyone like to point me in the direction and help a fellow learner?

What file are you themeing? If it's a market app or system app that's been updated you have to theme the app in /data not /system.
I am theming a actual rom theme.
OK so you are just tweaking an existing theme? And you tried to change some images but the changes don't stick? Could you go through the steps you took? I'm rewriting the guide to make it a little more coherent and add some tips on market apps and such.
Yes, i am just tweaking an existing rom.
Okay.. download the zipped theme onto my desktop. Explored it and went to system, framework, framework-res.apk, res, drawable-hdpi.
I found an image that i wanted to change..lets say the music play button, in this instance. I changed the color of it from white to green, then i saved it. It asked me if i want to replace the image, in which i replied with yes. I flashed the theme on my phone..and the button is still white.
Okay, re-download the theme again, now this time open (not unzip) the new downloaded framework-res.apk and drag the changed icons you made earlier into the correct folder of this new file. Now close the opened file and flash it.

If its just black, go to nav bar settings and press reset Nav bar.I had this happen to me....you'll have to re flash the ROM to be able to change the actual images of the buttons or just put up with the stock nav bar.

Why don't you extract of from the Rom zip
First, you should always, always do a nandroid before you flash stuff on your phone.
Second, I don't believe there is any way to simply flash keys on a stock rom. I'm sure if your more savvy to modding/theming you can do it but not without a little computer magic.
Third, to get your keys back (since you don't have a backup) you'll need to go ahead and either download and flash a rom from the forums (fastest way to get your phone back to normal)
Or you can unroot and re lock using the toolkit you used to root your phone, then start from scratch.
Edit:
Oh and lastly, sometimes ppl get a little pissy if you ask questions in the wrong forum. The q&a forum is up top

Thanks to everyone for helping again. Can anyone suggest me a link for a good tutorial to install AOKP, bonus would be if it is a Mac tutorial although Windows is also fine
Thanks again everyone!

...You just flash it in a custom recovery, it has little to do with your computer's OS. It's the same process for most ROMs. Have you actually gone through and read a few threads?

First, you should always, always do a nandroid before you flash stuff on your phone.
Second, I don't believe there is any way to simply flash keys on a stock rom. I'm sure if your more savvy to modding/theming you can do it but not without a little computer magic.

I actually change my keys often from my phone and I'm running stock. There's a post somewhere in themes and apps, can't remember exactly where since I'm on my phone, but someone has a bunch of icon sets for soft keys and also directions on how to change the keys using either apps/mods or directly in /system.
What I do is download the soft keys I'm interested in, and use Root Explorer to extract SystemUI.apk. I locate the extracted folder and then I move the soft keys I want into it and save over the old ones (they have to have the exact same name even if different images). I then zip the folder, rename as SystemUI.apk, then move it into /system and save over the current .apk and reboot.
When I first started this way it seemed like a bit too much hassle but now that I'm used to it it's fairly simple and quick.

Took less than five mins. Forgot to add that once you paste over SystemUI you'll either have to have a quick trigger on the power button or just do a battery pull because you get the "SystemUI has stopped" error message.

[Solved] Files needed to fix phone (looking for "bootanimation" and others)

*******************************************************************************************************************************************************************************
SOLUTION FOUND, much thanks to @DocHoliday77
See here for "bootanimation", "bootsamsung", and "bootsamsungloop" files or bottom of this post.
I unziped and I copied "bootanimation" to /system/bin and changed the permissions, I only needed the "bootanimation" file, I had to change permissions to rwe-re-re, other combinations might work/be better. If someone needs to use the other two files, they go in /system/media
Again, credit to @DocHoliday77 for the files!

Hey everyone,
So, I tried changing my boot animation, and now I don't have any (it's just a black screen with the original sound)
(I'm on Candian Telus, with 4.4.2)
Basically what I'm asking/looking for is someone to attach a couple files off there phone so I can replace the ones that were altered through this tutorial, and hopefully get a boot animation back.
I'm not 100% sure if I need all of these, or if I may need more, but I have a pretty good idea of what was likely altered:
/system/bin/bootanimation (the extension-less file, this is one that I'm positive that got altered)
/system/bin/samsungani (possibly just and additon fr tutorial, unsure if needed. Information on if others have it would be awesome)
Any information on my situation would be amazing!
Have you tried factory reset (you'll lose data this way)?
Can you flash your ROM again (data will be wiped though)?

No, I haven't tried either. I'm trying to avoid losing any data, if possible.
Also, I'm not sure if it will fix the problem since the files have been altered directly. (I'm not sure if it will just reset with the file it has now or not)
Any thoughts?
Factory resetting won't help since boot animation is on /system.
If you can't find them here you can always copy them from a stock rom.
Make sure the binary file is from the same build as your current rom. It might not matter, but it just might.

Yeah, I'm really hoping someone is nice enough to copy and paste their bootanimation file in here, but I doubt it'll happen...
Any tips/ideas on how to go about copying from a stock rom? (I'm new to a lot of this stuff, so I'm unsure of how to go about this)
you can search on google and download boot animations.
but like doc said , ' make sure is from same build cause it might just matter. i DL cm 10.1 from internet and works great .
just a thought.

@mrrocketdog
It's not so much a boot animation itself that I'm having trouble with, but the actual system file called "bootanimation".
I believe when I tried to install a custom animation I/the files from a tutorial I was using altered it, and now it doesn't work whatsoever.
If you know of any boot animation tutorials/files that could fix this though that would be sick!
Either way thanks for the input!
You can try these if you like. I'm running Likewise rom right now, but they should work fine for you.

I love you. At first it didn't work but I changed some permission and now it's back to stock! Thank you sooo much!
Not to to add further trouble, but to prevent any future mishaps, could you point me in the right direction to getting a custom boot animation running?
maybe here..

if you use search a whole lot pops up.
good luck.

There should be a thread(s) in the Themes and Apps section. I wouldn't use any not confirmed or made for the S3 though. And I wouldn't mess with that binary file either. (Unless specifically told to do so in one of our threads.) Any we have here should work fine just using the actual animation files.
Some threads may also have a return to stock zip file you can flash in recovery.

think thats o.k. doc ? so maybe be REAL FREAKIN CAREFUL.

Alright guys, sounds like a plan. I'll make sure to be a whole lot more careful this time around! Thanks a bunch!

Are you referring to the one you linked to? To be perfectly honest I wouldn't try it. It was for the HTC One, right? I just don't know enough about HTC devices. It might be safe to use the animation, but it may just not work. (I doubt there'd be much danger of a hard brick though, but better safe....)

yup, thats the one. i forget sometimes : READ READ READ. thanks for double checking behind me. will be more careful in future. dont want to cause xtra problems !!!!!!
err on the side of kindness
No problem. It could be perfectly ok to use, but since I don't know, I consider it a higher risk is all. Another thing to consider is if it's dpi is different the images probably wouldn't display correctly.

@DocHoliday77
So after a while of researching I was thinking of downloading CyanogenMod, and the using that to do boot animation stuff, thoughts?
As long as it's from the S3 versions of cm, I believe it would be safe to try. Probably the worst that might occur would be no animation, like you already experienced. I don't use CM though, and don't really mess with the boot animation much to begin with, so it is possible it wouldn't work as expected, I'm just not sure on that. But it should be simple enough to get back to the stock animation with the files I posted before.

Yeah, I guess that's really the worse that could happen, I've made a backup of my stock ROM so I should be able to go back if needed. Again, thanks for all the help!
