I have reset my phone to factory settings and formatted the sd card,
If someone could give me a easy guide..as I dont want to brick it
Thank you
Similar issue here,
i've used su a way ago to remove some pre-installed apps like amazon MP3, facebook, etc. Then played a while with DHD Revolution ROM, then went back to the stock rom (just restored it from a backup). Now i can't update to 1.72: it crashes at about 20%. Tried to do a factory reset, still the same. It says: the md5's for /system/app/facebook.apk don't match.
Does anyone have any ideas how to get the phone completely back to a stock state?
This is what I got from HTC
Thank you for contacting us. In regards to fota update I can help you with that. We advise you to check followings ; If the update fails for some reason this is something the customers can try. The OTA update is downloaded to the phone and is placed in a folder called Download on the SD card. Using a file explorer, browse to this folder and you should find the downloaded update. The file should have an obvious name, beginning with OTA_x_Froyo_....... Tghis file will be a zip file. Rename the file to update.zip. In general, you do not need to put in .zip, as it will already be flagged as a zip file, and doing so would end up with a file called update.zip.zip, which will not work. To run these update follow these instructions: 1. Take the battery out and put it back in without starting the phone. 2. Press and hold the Volume Down button. 3. While still holding Volume Down, press and release the Power button. 4. Keep pressing Volume Down until you see 3 skateboarding androids on the bottom of the screen. release the Volume Down button and wait a few seconds 5. Press Volume Down to navigate to Recovery in the menu and press the Power button to select it. 6. When you see a triangle with a exclamation mark !, press Volume Up and Power at the same time. 7. You should now see blue text and the option to Apply sdcard:update.zip 8. Navigate to it using the Volume keys, and select it using the Power button. The phone will hopefully now install the update and after its done reboot the phone
And this is what happened when I ran it..
I have reinstalled the amazon app.
E/ can't find caceh/recovery/command
If I download the update via settings/about phone/system software updates it says E/ can't find checeh/recovery/command
If i press volume up and the powwer button it then says
Finding update package ... Opening update package... Verifying update package.. Installing update... Copying fotaBoot to /data system for customize reload... Verifying current system... assert failed: apply_patch_check("/system/app/amazonmp3.apk". Anyone had this same problem?? Please help. Is there a way to view E/caceh/recovery/command
Thank you
Update fails if you remove any system apps.
You can still get back to stock by following this guide.
If you update to 1.72 using that method you will loose root forever though.
You can do it this way if you want 1.72 with root.
Oh yeah don't use the root package from that thread. It will keep force closing. Use this one instead.
Sent from my performance enhanced Desire HD.
i removed my system appd.
So now i get the status 7 message as well! How can i get the apps back? :/
update.zip
Can anyone upload the update.zip file here?
OK, so I have my wife's old Incredible that was Rooted with Unrevoked. It was kept stock Rooted.
She got an Incredible 2 and I now want to sell her old Incredible. Tried to Wipe data and SD Card using the Data and Storage Settings menu. The phone acts like it is doing both things, but doesn't actually format the SD Card, and when doing a Factory Reset, the phone reboots and acts like it is wiping the data. When it boots back up, her background is still there and there are a bunch of widgets that say "Problem Loading Widget" on them. It does seem to remove some items as email accounts are reset, GMail, etc. are all wiped.
So, I reboot into Recovery to try and reflash the stock Radio, put S-On, and install the stock ROM, but no matter what I choose in Clockwork Recovery, I get a "blank" screen after choosing a menu item. For example, when I go to "Install Zip from Sdcard," It will take the input and where it would normally ask what Zip I want to install, it only shows the background of CWR. If I try to Wipe Data, where normally it would have all the menu options with "NO" and the one that says "Yes - Wipe Data," that menu never shows up.
So, I can't fully wipe the thing, and I can't seem to flash stock Boot, Recovery, etc. to get this back to stock so I can sell it.
Any ideas?
I'll try helping you out.
1) download a new Incredible recovery from dougpiston.com/ and follow his directions above the downloads.
2) reboot into hboot (you can also turn off phone then hold vol down + power). It should prompt for an update, which you should accept. Let your phone do it's thing, it may take several minutes or longer.
3) Once you have a new recovery, delete that PB31IMG recovery file.
Your recovery should work as expected now. Btw, where did you download the s-on file from?

I downloaded both the Stock recovery, flashed and got a picture of a phone with a Red Exclamation point on it. I then downloaded CWR 3.0.0.8 and flashed that, this time it goes into recovery but does the same thing the other one does: Shows the menu options but then the screen goes blank if I try to choose an option.
EDIT: Holy poop, I think I know what the issue was all along! Basically, I was thinking that recovery worked like my Thunderbolt in that the Vol +/- was how to scroll in CWR menus and the PWR button was the select. Turns out that you use the trackball to both scroll AND select menus in CWR on the DInc!
I just wiped the device in CWR and it is booting up. I already sold the phone to a friend and she told me to keep it Rooted with a stock ROM on it, so I don't have to go any further provided that it wipes properly!
Well as long as it works!
My goal is it reroot and/or flash a ROM so that I don’t have dumb apps open in the background, no or not many FCs (force close) and still be able to make a WiFi hotspot.
so, I mistakenly hit the system update button once on my unrEVOked3 dinc. the first time not much happened. i would get some FCs, but I thought it was the apps’ fault. The SECOND time I pressed it i did it on purpose, (lots of FCs before) and got even more FCs, I tried doing the factory reset through my phone normally, didn’t work. I tried unrEVOked3, sometimes it would ask if my thing is too new other times it wouldn’t recognize when I plug it in.
when i try unrEVOked forever I get lost after I download the file. I tried renaming it update.zip and placing in the root of my micro SD card. I tried just placing it there. I can get into the clockwork mod in revovery mode, then i select the update.zip option, hit the power button to select it and the screen goes black. i hit the power button once more and the phone pretends that I hit the power button to turn off the screen. I have tried letting it set for a couple minutes before taking the battery out... since then (last night) i read (on xda) that i should give it half an hour then reassess and that i am lucky I didn’t brick it. i can’t open many apps right now, but THANKFULLY open garden still works so I can type this... (it has some error about a log file, but who cares)
I searched here for “system update after root” and didn’t find anything relevant. most people lost root. and the person with the defy didn’t want to root again...
for the most part I know nothing about which ROM would be “best” for me, but I was thinking about In-Sensitive Minimalist or Condemned SupraROM
I am normally pretty good with this type of thing, but I can’t seem to get it to go. I did do a search here, but only found this issue for the desire and people who lost their root...

I have verizon and I am in the U.S.A.
I was able to get the unrEVOked splash screen on it!-)
Thanks for your time,
Stephen
P.S. is it bad that it is trying to update Flash player 11 twice? If I cancel one they both cancel, but they can download the update at different rates...
P.P.S root browser and current widget work. apps that FC right after opening: TeslaLED, adcanded task killer (runs in background but when i pull it down and select it it FCs) life is crime, GPS status opens 90% then FCs...
You say you have root access but do you have s-off? Could you check by removing your battery then holding "power button and volume down"? Your s-off or s-on status is displayed at the top left of the screen.
Also when choosing to install any file in recovery, you must press the optical button to select options NOT the power button.
it says s-off
thanks for the quick reply. i figured it was something simple. i will try the optical button now...
I tried update.zip using the optical button. it said E: can't open update.zip beacuse it doesn't exist. i am guessing i didn't put it in the right root directory.
unrEVOked says to join IRC for support if possible. i'll give this a go...
No problem, post back if you have any issues after you wipe data then flash a rom.
I wiped the cache 2x and ran update.zip. the most apps still FC on me.
so the next step is to download some ROM and rename it update.zip or do the option for install from zip?
It is almost bed time for me my shift starts REAL early tomorrow...
This may be something you want to postpone until after work because you want to leave room to troubleshoot any issues that arise. Trust me, someone can help you with this at any time. That said, What exactly are you attempting to install? Before flashing a rom, could you also check your hboot version which is located underneath your s-off status? This matters because you will receive errors when installing gingerbread or higher based roms (2.3+) if your hboot version is not up to date. Froyo roms (2.2) may not cause issues.
If you want to install roms, do this:
▪ Copy ROM to root of the SDCARD
▪ Boot into recovery
▪ Select "Wipe Data/Factory Reset"
▪ Format system in mounts
▪ Install it using "Install Zip From SD" Card option
▪ Boot - NOTE: Be patient on first boot since it may sit for a few minutes
Do not bother with renaming the zip file of the rom cuz that is an unnecessary step. Also, to reinstall your apps you should re-download them from the Android Market once the rom settles.
so far i have only tired to install unrEVOked forever and normal apps from the market...
HBOOT-0.92.0000
I have only done the wipe cache partition and apply update.zip
so far i have redownloaded apps from the market. the only one that i tried and doesn't have any issues is currentwidget and root browser
Aight, that is perfect. As long as you feel comfortable to flash a rom then go for it!
First make a nandroid backup by going into Recovery and selecting "Backup and Restore," select "Backup, " then once it's finished backing up your rom install the rom using the directions in my last post. Also, ensure that you have any and all of your contacts backed up to (preferably) Gmail but at least to Verizon Backup Assistant. This will save you from a major headache.
I haven't had steady 3g to download a ROM yet. I get to 30-something percent and then it gets "interrupted" and can't resume. I will be home in the after i deliver in the morning, so i should be able to finish then...
thanks for all the advice. now i will try it on my viewsonic g-tablet now that i know that it isn't too difficult. (once one knows what one is doing at least)

Hey guys im trying to root my device so i can install some lightweight custom roms. Ive been following this guide i found online
http://androidcritics.com/how-to-root-and-install-clockworkmod-recovery-on-galaxy-s3-i747/
I basically did this
Installing Clockwork Recovery Mod
Find the recovery image file which is clockworkmod.tar
On your Samsung Galaxy S3 I747, press and hold down the volume down, power, and home buttons
Once your at the warning screen, press volume up to accept
Launch the Odin program from your computer
In Odin, find the PDA tab and click it
Find the clockworkmod.tar.md5 file in the unzipped recovery image file
Press start to begin flashing the recovery mod
BE PATIENT! and wait until your device reboots
Once your device has fully rebooted, you can start installing root
It loaded on the phone fine. I then did this
Installing Root
Transfer the root.zip file onto your phone from your computer
Make sure you connect your s3 to your computer and find the root zip file and put it in your downloads folder.
Enter clockwork recover mod by holding down the volume up, power, and home buttons
Navigate by using the volume buttons to Install Zip > Choose Zip from Internal SD card > Navigate to the downloads folder> Select
Be Patient! and wait until your device is finished
Once the process is finished, you can select Reboot
Once your device has rebooted, launch the Google Play Store app
Search “SuperuserSU” and select the first app that shows in the search results
Install this app
Once it has finished installing, your done!
The only problem is I cant navigate to the option "install zip from internal sd card" I simply dont have though's options here is what I have when hold volume up reset and home
"reboot system now
apply update from ADB
apply update from external storage (which i dont have)
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
apply update from cache
When i hit apply update from ADB it says "now send the package you want to apply to the device with "adb sideload <filename>"...
Im wondering if the original flash didnt go thru? Why dont I have the options that I should?
Any help would mean the world trying to get this puppy up asap!

Sounds like the root method you are using is just way to complicated. Follow this one here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426 it has prerooted firmwares that you just install with odin and you are done (cwm included). Just make sure you grab the right firmware for your carrier.
If I have helped you out, slap that thanks button.

So After I flashed the new rom to my phone i left it plugged in and it restarted. Android loader popped on and now it says android is upgrading... starting apps. Its been like this for over a half an hour... what do i do??? helpppp dont really want to reset it but it is bricked? or do i have to reload ?
update:
held the restart button down it restarted bit is still stuck on starting apps.
update two:
held vol down home and reset tried to reload the rogers rom onto the phone and now it stops at samsung load screen. Do i have to reload the carrier that came with the phone? I cant quite remember what the original carrier was.
UPDATE THREE:
I as able to boot back into the phone but...nothing changed? i ended up wiping the phones data in settings because its too full as it is. I downloaded root checker and it said access was denied ? That makes its not rooted after all... I followed the directions seems that they didnt take? Any clues?

Okay buddy looks like you need to learn some basic android 101
You are definitely not ready to root or do anything til you learn this stuff...
Okay, so first is recoveries. Basically recoveries are a bit of software that let's you flash ROMs, kernels, and whatever else to your phone. When you hold volume up and power when your phone is off, you boot to recovery. Now basically recoveries are necessary because when you are flashing a new ROM it essentially deletes the android system from your phone first so this is a way of your phone still working between flashes.
Clockworkmod is a custom recovery with a lot of features meant for flashing ROMs. There are competitors such as TWRP (team win recovery project) but clockworkmod is a great starter. Use videos or tutorials on how to use it before you flash your first ROM. I can not stress how often you need to read read and read some more.
Okay so rooting your phone. Basically there is a "root" directory of your phone. Its where all the system files are stored and it let's you do a lot of stuff, but it also means you can screw a lot of stuff up to (like really screw it up). On default you are locked out of here by the maker of your phone for various reasons. Rooting means that someone found an exploit to gain access to this folder. Usually what you then do is you find a way to inject superuser (a little app that gives root access to other apps later on). You use Odin in this case to install a stock Samsung rom (with superuser already put in the root directory of that modified ROM its installing) essentially this means you have root. Root allows you to install recoveries like clockworkmod (which you need to flash ROMs later.
Okay so that was my quick run through. At your point you need to go to YouTube and Google how to root the sgs3 and hopefully they should have one for your specific carrier. The process should be the same minus the files you flash. Essentially you should be looking for stock ROM (for your specific device) with superuser or supersu already installed. Then you should be finding a way to install clockworkmod once you have root. (You may be able to find a file or tutorial that does this in one go). I cannot emphasise enough about reading. You wouldn't be here had you read first and in the flashing business, if you don't want a sgs3 paper weight you should read first.
Oh and ROMmanager from the marketplace installs clockworkmod for you (ONCE YOU HAVE ROOT) its simple. Just download it from the play story. Click flash recovery. It will load a bit and your done. Then you can reboot into it. ROM manager (the paid version is unnecessary) it just adds extra features you don't yet need. Look at it once you have flashed your first few ROMs.
Best of luck. Let me know and slap that thanks button. I wrote this on my phone.

Hi eddy,
It sounds like you didn't get CWM to stick after your flash with ODIN. You need to uncheck the reboot option in odin and then after the flash is done pull the battery and go directly into CWM loader by booting with the volume up + power + home button method. This will give you cwm rather than the stock loader you seem to be trying to use. You're almost there!

I think he can't install the superuser.zip from cwm after boot because he's allowing the stock rom to overwrite his cwm flash ... he's gotta pull his battery after the odin flash to get root in. That's what worked for me. once he's got root he can use rom manager to upgrade to cwm 6.x

He shouldn't need cwm to install. If flashes a firmware with root already injected he can then just use rom manager to install clockworkmod for the first time since rom manager just needs root which he will have. You can root and keep the stock recovery on at the same time
I think his biggest issue is root not sticking. Til he does that cwm wont install
Pixel 3a XL
I haven't been getting a notification when there is a new monthly update and checking for update button not working either. I am rooted with Magisk and have some modules installed. I have disabled the modules, unistalled the modules and neither worked. I have uninstalled Magisk and checked for update before reinstalling.
Any idea what could be blocking me from getting OTA?
Thanks
You can't take ota's if you have magisk and or a custom kernel installed
you have to restore/ flash the boot img from the factory img your currently on in fastboot on a pc or mac
I've done it many times with these directions. I recently had to factory reset my phone and since I've done that no OTAs.
http://bit.ly/2PTAXj0
Getting an OTA to take while rooted is always hit and miss. I bought this phone in May 2019 and have successfully installed an OTA update perhaps 3 times since owning it.
You are going to have to get very familiar with sideloading the updates. Here is a set of instructions that I created in my "How to Root" thread in the Pixel 3a forum.
If the normal OTA method isn't working - sideload the OTA update
Taking an OTA update should be as easy as the above instructions. However there is another option available to install an OTA update called sideloading. Sometimes the update doesn't appear on the phone in a timely manner and you may want to manually install the update. Other times the OTA update seems to fail for some reason. In the end, you may decide to sideload the OTA instead of trying get it via the update feature on the phone. Surprisingly, it's actually faster to install the update via sideloading than it will be to take the OTA normally. I'll walk through the sideloading steps.....
Optional Step 1 - Uninstall Magisk (so that it restores the stock boot.img). If you find yourself unable to boot into recovery, you will have to restore the stock boot.img. I've run into this issue on some Android 10 images, but not all.
Step 2 - Download to your computer the correct OTA image from here
Step 3 - Connect to your phone via ADB on your computer. You should see the device listed if you type the command "adb devices".
Step 4 - Boot your phone into recovery (type the command "adb reboot recovery").
Step 5 - The phone will have a green android robot with a red sign over it's open access panel. Press the power button and then the volume up button while still holding down the power button.
Step 6 - Select "Apply update from ADB" using the volume buttons to highlight the choice and the power button to select it to enter the sideload mode.
Step 7 - Using your computer, type "adb sideload ota_file.zip" where ota_file.zip is the name of the OTA file you downloaded in step 2.
Step 8 - Once the update finishes, reboot the phone to complete the update process. (See note below about initial boot times).
Step 9 - To obtain root again, please use one of the two root methods listed above
Please note, while the the initial boot doesn't generally take that long there are times when may take quite a while. In extreme cases, I've seen the process take upwards of 20 minutes and longer. I think part of the reason it can take so long is that it optimizes the apps during this boot process. The more apps you have, the longer the process may take. When you take an regular OTA update, the phone will change to a screen where is specifically tells you it is optimizing the apps and counts up as the apps are optimized to give you status updates. When you use the side-load method, it all happens with just the regular boot animation running and without any status updates. Because of this, it is easy to assume something has gone wrong with the boot process while in fact the phone is working through the process normally. If it isn't boot looping (showing the initial power screen before moving back to the boot animation), everything is fine and you just need to be patient and let the phone complete the process.
I updated via sideload. Thank you
