Google Play Store is asking me to update an app called Google Pinyin. It is an input method (apparently primarily for Chinese characters) but I can't figure out why it is on my Nexus 7. Anyone familiar with it? Could it be connected to 7Note?

Pinyin is mainly used in China, I think for EN/EU users, you don't have to update this, and you could even uninstall update/disable it.
its a ASUS thing, they someone managed to put this IME on a supposedly clean Nexus rom
it got under the radar because it is blessed by google
disable it
I just uninstalled updates and disabled it. It is of no use to me for I don't speak Chinese.
Did you guys install the PDANet Drivers or use the Google Nexus 7 ToolKit v1.1 to root and/or unlock? My Nexus 7 did not have Pinyin on it until I tried to root it tonight and it didn't show up until I installed the PDANet Drivers and the Google Nexus 7 Toolkit.
Hooray for Titanium Backup! Friendly bloatware remover! :]
I had that and a Korean keyboard pre-installed.. both are long gone...
This randomly downloaded itself onto my nexus 7 this morning - understock there is no way to uninstall it - thank god for root.
You did nt happen to install the London olympic app did you? That's when I noticed it was there

It was one of the first apps I uninstalled as soon as I had root!

I doubt it, i didn't install the olympic app and i had korean keyboard and pinyin.
I also had a Japanese IME, began with an "i" but I can't remember the name.
Uninstalled all 3 via Titanium Backup.
I am not rooted and have not installed any Olympic apps. I did install 7Note with Mezac. Did not notice Pinyin until after that thus my reason for asking if they were connected. In all fairness, however, I was not looking for Pinyin and wouldn't have noticed it if it hadn't started asking to be updated. For all I know, it could have come out of the box with Pinyin installed as some have suggested. I have disabled it with no adverse affects thus far.

Pinyin!?
Got both NBC "London Olympics" apps and presto, there was the Pinyin app.
Bah!
Its just showing up for everyone yesterday at around the time you downloaded any app from the app store, it just threw that update in there, no matter what you installed. I am not rooted and cant get rid of it. Uninstalling the update erases it from the app drawer, but as soon as i download an app or update from Play, its back....
Like I mentioned on the thread in the QA forum , it's to save Google from having to manage localised versions of firmware images. You know, the world doesn't revolve around English as the only language. And no, Asus didn't put Pinyin there, Google did, because the app is by Google themselves. So stop getting all emo and xenophobic.
I actually use Google Pinyin myself, so I'm actually glad it's there by default.
It came on mine stock. It was there before I installed anything.Mine is korean however.

Chinese, Japanese and Korean IME ALL came with the stock ROM.
I actually have other issues, i don't mind google puts useless ime in the rom, but it removes/hides my books, magazines, movies when detecting my location (outside of usa)... sign...

I wish to install "Google Korean Keyboard IME" on the Samsung Galaxy Y.
But it is not showing in the MarketPlace. Searching on the PC Marketplace tells me that this app is not compatible. I see no reason why, unless this is due to screen resolution.
Can anyone check this out? Is the Marketplace in error saying that it is incompatible, in which case, can it be sideloaded? Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
I also have a Samsung Galaxy Nexus , and installed the Google Korean IME keyboard app with no problem for that device, as the app was happily listed in the marketplace.
But on the Samsung Galaxy Y, the Google Play (marketplace) does not list the Google Korean IME keyboard app, so I can't install it as I don't know any other method of installing an application other than the marketplace.
Get the apk from your Nexus, pass it to your SGY and install. If you don't know how to get apk's manually you can download the apkExtractor app in the market. Alternatively, you can just google for an apk, download and install.

Thanks, that was a great and very helpful explanation, which I was able to follow.
Using this method I successfully installed the keyboard on the Samsung Galaxy Y, but unfortunately it didn't allow me to use it, so I give up. The technique was very useful to know though.
You're welcome. There are a lot of apps in the market that say they are incompatible but some of them actually work pretty well with this phone, so you have to get them from other sources and try for yourself. XD

Google Ears (like Shazam / Soundhound) is automatically disabled for Canadian (maybe other non-US?) Nexus 7 users, I guess because we can't buy music from the Play Store. It's in system/app, but it's frozen.
Titanium Backup will not allow me to unfreeze. I moved the existing apk and odex with Root Explorer and put this in it's place, set permissions, rebooted and installed. Works fine, but it doesn't stick around after another reboot. I can restore it with Titanium and it'll work again... until the next boot.
It's so quick in identifying a song vs Shazam. Any ideas?
I'm sure there must be an easier way, but it seems that converting it to a user app with Titanium after restoring does the trick.
It's disabled in UK too. I just set permissions using root explorer (rw, r, r), put the widget on my homescreen and it's stayed there through all reboots. Didn't notice any icon appear in the app draw though.

Strangely enough, it isn't disabled on UK Nexus S's (my friend has one, unrooted stock, I saw it there after he got JB update).
All I had to do was defrost with Titanium Backup.
I can't even get it to install .Works fine on my OneX side loaded the apk to the N7 and it just goes through the motions of installing then says failed

It's a widget, shows up as Sound Search. I'm amused at the propensity for Google to always have two possible names for one service... you never know for sure where something is going to show up in the app drawer / app manager.
Anyone having trouble may want to try the version from the Google Ears/Sound Search (From Jelly Bean) thread over in dev / hacking.
For users in Canada, Google has it disabled
use tibu to defrost it,
type this in terminal emaulator:
su
pm enable com.google.android.ears
then use this link to update it:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.ears
don't search, it wont work use the link. This worked for me.

Personaly I am not a fan of the latest google search(2.0). I don't like that the option is gone to not search the internet right from the first insterted charracter, and that I have to click an extra time in order to get to see the results from within my tablet itself(contacts, 3rd party apps). Anyway. I therefore installed the previous version of google search(1.3). But altrough I didn't check the auto update box in the play store for google search(I double checked) it still updates itself to the latest version almost every day. Would there be anyone who would know a way to stop google search from auto updating itself?

Thanks, however when I freeze the app, I won't be able to use it any more, or will I? Because I do want to use it, I just don't want it to update to the latest version.
Its starting to aggravate me that my old phone can do more than this tablet. Is jb really that new? No one prepared for it's release? Come on! Love my tablet but wtf is the hold up with the apps not being ready to use like td bank and Amazon mobile to name a few.

I must agree to a certain extent. NatWest banking app fails on jellybean, it just won't show my balance. For the most part however, apps work fine.

Unlikely has anything to do with JB. Most likely the permissions listed below are incompatible with the Nexus 7.
Amazon Mobile requires these permissions:
Your location
coarse (network-based) location, fine (GPS) location
Network communication
full Internet access, view network state
Hardware controls
take pictures, control vibrator

Didnt try the td bank app but try sideloading that one as well. It might work.

Yes I keep encountering apps that don't appear in the market. They may very well work, but won't appear for nexus 7/jelly bean.
Some examples?
linephone
GT racing Hyundai edition
And there are lots of others that I can't think of now. Since owning this nexus (since launch date) I've probably encountered 30-40 apps that aren't available on the market. And I know there are lots others. Didn't really bother me at first, but I thought with how much this has sold that developers would issue (what would be minor most of the time) updates so these would be available.
And I've never bothered looking into it, but I know obviously you can keep an apk when downloading it from the market and others have posted them on various websites for others in situations like this, however my understanding is with jb it encrypts them so this is no longer possible with jb.
Because sometimes I get determined and go hunting for an apk and it turns out to be two versions behind or whatever. Is there a way to download apks even on jb? Is there an app that can do this? I'm not saying this regarding pirating, just another means of trying to get apps that are free that would more than likely work on this device.
I have the latest google search and google play services. Running cleanrom 3.5. Earlier in the week i tried the unlockgoogle method but no result. Tried the most recent idea of "ok google everywhere" and tried "okay google everywhere", same result, only option I get is within google search app. Have audio history turned on.
Did you change the voice to US English?
Mine wouldn't work with UK English, but did when changed to US.
Even got it working on my stock 4.4 Xperia Z.

I did a full wipe and reinstall of cleanrom, updated everything in google play before doing anything else, and now it appears. Will see if restore of apps makes it disappear again.
I have the option to enable it, but when I get to the setup screen where you're supposed to say "OK Google" 3x, nothing happens. Also, I've realized that "OK Google" doesn't even work within Google Now. It just doesn't register that I've said anything. But if I click the mic icon, I can use the voice search. It's just the hotword detection that doesn't work at all. I've got a VZW Note 3, rooted stock ROM, stock recovery.
Just wondering if anyone else with a Note 3 is having the same issue. If it's device related, I can stop trying until the next official update from VZW. Which will probably be just under 3 years from now
