My understanding is that with PDANet, tethering looks like normal data use. Does Wireless Tether or the hacked Sprint Hotspot app (warm 2.2) also show up as normal data use or can Sprint tell you're tethering over wifi?
I ask because apparently AT&T has been sending letters to customers who use MyWi forcing them to either sign up for a tethering plan or stop tethering... Can (would?) Sprint do something similar?

Sprint can't tell unless they use Deep Packet Inspection and see something like "Oh hey, what's all this encrypted traffic coming from Netflix's server?".
As for AT&T, they're just yelling at anyone with high amounts of data usage. Simple as that.

I showed him the Rom and told him about rooting, tether and all. He said " "damm. show me how to do that on mines"....i told about Unrevoked and XDA. NOW Im sure he could be reading this thread!
i'm not sure if they can, but i think they stated publicly that they dont care. their paid one just works better, and on 3g and 4g, while consuming less battery than the rest. this is their response, and i think it works well. self-advertising while not angering devs. pretty good of them.

if you switch roms, most have a hacked hospot to work on 3g. wifi tether app also works on 4g.

you can do both no charge.
Sprint mainly checks for users exceeding the 5Gb per month for data. Other than that, it is difficult to tell without users feeling that their privacy is being invaded. 5Gb comes up quickly if you are streaming movies or downloading outside the normal browsing or youtube.

Yeah, but it wouldn't be a store employee checking anyway. Either way, seems like they don't care.
My evo was rooted with revoked, but still using the standard rom. I was able to use wireless tether without converting to any other rom. Be sure to use the security features (passphrase and access control) to prevent inadvertent use by others.

Sprint doesn't have a 5gb limit on smartphone plans, that is only on data cards on the 3g network. I just watched a commercial yesterday with Dan Hess stating that Sprints unlimited plans have no limits, unlike Verizon and AT&T.

they dont have a throttle, they just look into it if you pull that much. like somebody said earlier, if you're pulling 8 gigs from netflix's server, there is only one explanation.
Anybody know of any specific examples of customers getting called out for excessive data use or wifi tethering? I assume there would've been an outrage on XDA and I would've heard about it... I don't think it's happened yet.
I get it that Sprint says they're truly unlimited but I have a nagging suspicion that they're eventually going to crack down on unauthorized tethering. Not that that's going to stop me in the mean time!

I'd have to dig through the contract and T&C but technically speaking wouldn't tethering without a plan be a contract violation? I'm not claiming to be Mr. Innocent here. I've done the free tethering and have had tethering plans. Just seems to me that since we all signed contracts legally speaking the carriers have more of a leg to stand on than we do.

I think with the sale of tmobile to at&t, Sprint will increase their user base with people bailing either one. Maybe, hopefully not, they'll begin to check our usage.
Then again, they'll be moving to LTE. Which means those of us with wimax devices, yours truly, will be left to use our data to our desires. At least I hope so.

I use over 20 gigs a month downloading files(ROMs, files for work, etc) and streaming videos to my phone and have for almost two years. Not once have I been throttled or warned.

So it sounds like the takeaway is that if Sprint wanted to, they could tell that you're tethering, but there is no evidence that they've ever done it or taken any action against customers... Cool.

I use Slingplayer daily for hours sometimes, then I'll tether my iPad 2 and watch movies from my computer while traveling around via AirVideo. I am currently at 10GB of usage this month which is average, they never throttled me or anything.
I've hit over 12GB of usage regularly with no complaints from Sprint. YMMV.

First off I'd like to just recognize the XDA forums and its members for all of your help over the past few years as I've been rooting, unlocking, and troubleshooting my android devices. I started with the T-Mobile Dash (HTC Excalibur), T-Mobile MyTouch 3G, Sprint HTC Hero, Sprint Galaxy Tab (Original 7-inch), and now happily using my unlocked and rooted Verizon Galaxy Nexus running AOKP M5.
Anyway, i recently was on the phone with Verizon to bump up my data plan to the 10GB / month deal for $50. We ended up bullshitting a bit about how old unlimited plans are going away with upgrades, and how people want true, unthrottled, unlimited data. Now I don't know how much truth there is in this, or if she was maybe just trying to get my hopes up, but she mentioned that in the near future verizon is going to launch a truly unlimited family data plan.
Has anyone else heard of this? Now this was only a tier 1 customer service representative, and I know I've heard a lot of people mention how the tier one people are not given any information about upcoming promotions like this. But it makes me think that maybe if there is any truth to this, other customer service members must know of it too, and possibly have told other curstomers.
So i was wondering if anyone other than me has heard anything? And if Verizon was to release an "Unlimited" data plan (family or per device), do you think it would end up being throttled?
If they were going to release an unlimited plan why would they bother removing the current ones?
I think its full of crap... Verizon is trying to get ppl to leave the Unlimited plans just like AT&T... recently Verizon said announced that ppl on unlimited were going to be forced out of it. But with so many petitions going around Verizon decided "fine u can keep your unlimited data plans but when it comes to upgrades, you'd be forced to pay the phone at retail price" ..... I personally never get upgrades from carriers... I'm on AT&T and I haven't upgraded my line in about 4 years. Bought the Nexus One .. went for the Nexus S ... and Now The Galaxy Nexus... but if what the lady says is true then my guess is that Verizon doesn't have enough ppl on the 4G network soooo perhaps this Works to there advantage. And of course there will always be a Throttle. =P

Because it's a grandfathered plan that CDMA customers got for a relatively inexpensive monthly fee. And I don't believe they are doing away with the plan for CDMA-only customers, as that "problem" should automaticaly take care of itself in just a few generations of phones. I've always thought that it was just a matter of time before they stoped offering their loyal long-time customers unlimited LTE service for the same low monthly rate they've always paid. Othewise tens of thousands of people would be using it for their home internet service as the LTE network grows. I'm sure many folks already are.
I'm only speculating, but the "Unlimitied Family Data" concept does sound feasible. But I'll bet it will cost more than twice what the grandfathered customers are now paying for it. Perhaps significantly more.

Well, i know that currently i believe there are only per device unlimited plans. What I've heard is that those plans will be switched to a tiered data plan if you are still on 3G and upgrade to a 4G LTE device.
What the Verizon lady was saying is that they will bring back unlimited as a Family Plan add-on, so that you can pay, say $100 (total guess), and get truely unlimited data on every device on your plan.
For me, this would be great, because everyone on my plan uses at the very least 4GB of data a month. This adds up to be about $150 in data plans across all the devices. If we could consolidate our data plans to one family plan wide "plan" then we could save alot of money, and use as much data!

I know it probably wont happen due to the proprietary 4G LTE technology, but it would be great to see Google offer unlocked 4G LTE nexus devices directly (on the play market). I would LOVE to pay google directly for their device at a slightly higher price, and not have to worry about voiding warranty or contract by modding my phone. Plus id love to get the actual google back cover for my GNEX, instead of that ugly Verizon stamped one...
How many years must i wait for truely unlimited data so i can use my device and the internet the way it was meant to be used!?!?

That is what i currently do, I use my GNEX as a Wifi access point to get my laptop online. I ditched comcast when i switched to verizon and got 4G LTE a month ago. I am no longer attached to my wall
The current unlimited 3g customers only pay like $15, correct??

I don't see why they'd be bringing back unlimited data when they haven't offered it to new subscribers for quite a long time now. They've clearly expressed that they want to launch family data plans, but I doubt they'd be unlimited. It goes against the direction they've (and other carriers) been pushing.

You must have not read your contract, which clearly states unlimited data on your phone, not unlimited data on every device you choose to connect to your phone.
I suggest taking the time to read your entire contract so you can find out everything you are doing that is clearly not covered by the agreement you signed with Verizon.

You have to remember that even thought you have "unlimited data", you're still sharing the same network tower as others and hogging up all the bandwidth isn't right.

Funny, I don't recall anyone asking for your opinion on this... i thought this thread was on the possibility of unlimited data coming our way.
OMG the world will end because people like me share internet to their computer! Do you guys realize that your on a website that specializes in stuff like, hmmmmm, wifi tethers? I understand their is a whole mess of more complicated things here, but honestly.... quit being so old fashioned. times are changing more and more each day. soon only big businesses will have data from the wall and everything will be wireless.

I'm an unlimited 3g user. I use wifi and Bluetooth tether, but only when I am in a place that doesn't have its own wifi or if my home wifi is acting up. Not all unlimited tetherers are bad. Besides, I pull in FAR more data streaming my music with Google Play Music.

The extra charge just for the ability to tether is BS! Just because i dont throw $40 a month to verizon to pay for a tether, doesnt mean im stealing data. I pay for the data no matter what. So what i use that data for and what device i use that data on should be totally up to me.
I am currently in a focus group and am looking for topics to bring up. Besides unlimited data what would you like me to use for topics?

The Faster Upgrade is a good one. Not so sure this forum is the place for the Bootloaders. The forum seems to be mainly focused on services offered by AT&T.
How about telling them that their own U-verse app for their Uverse Service will not install or work on their Note 2 phone?
Keyword is this is major customer dissatisfier...
Let us tether without having to buy a separate tethering plan! Especially if we have the grandfathered unlimited data plan :laugh:

This is my biggest issue as well as many others. Why can't we have both. Now don't hate me here... (I hardly ever use more then 2GB a month anyways) but, I think they should let us have free tethering with unlimited data and then they can slow us down after 5 GB. It would be a way so in emergency's it would be available and I wouldn't have to worry about incurring an addition cost.....
As for the we paid for unlimited argument... for me I never really use that much but I see the validity of the argument.
My proposal is simply: sure you can tether, but if you blow though all your data we are going to slow you down..... little steps my friends little steps.
I'd ask about markets with slow HSPA+ speeds. I'd heard that there's a difference between "HSPA+" and "HSPA+ with enhanced backhaul". Are they rolling out this "enhanced backhaul" to more markets, or are they just focusing on their slowly growing LTE?

I agree with you. I have AT&T's grandfathered 'unlimited' plan but I have never gone above 2GB in a month, except two months ago. I was travelling for business and tethered my laptop to my phone to stream some online videos and pushed 3GB while tethering. I got a letter in the mail next week telling me that I couldn't do that again after the 30th of the month or they would convert me to a tethering plan. I'm not asking to let me tether on my unlimited plan to let me push tens of GB's, I simply want to be able to tether my tablet or laptop while traveling for work.
I was going to get the 3g Nexus 7 but settled on the GN2 since I wouldn't have to either a) but a tethering plan for my SGS3 or b) buy a separate data plan for my new tablet. The GN2 solves the tablet issue for me (probably a separate thread altogether).

Tell that to our One X and Atrix compatriots. Carriers dictate locked bootloaders (and the inability to unlock them, like at htcdev.com)
Ditto the need for faster OS upgrades from AT&T. If they want to keep customers, they'll have to learn to be more nimble. (Painful for a huge corporation, but it can be done.)
Tell them to lose Isis. The people want Google wallet, not Isis.

I would like to see the primary line on a family plan get back the 12 month upgrade cycle.
Also, I think phone warranties should last at least until upgrade eligibility. Or, they should let people upgrade early if their phone breaks between warranty end and upgrade eligibility.

Faster firmware updates, better communication about when we are going to get updates (Why do Sprint and Verizon have multiview, for example, but we don't? AT&T isn't saying anything about it), removal of bloatware from the ROMs/stop tinkering with ROMs, and find out why we don't have original packaging (anyone else miss their Samsung Tin or headphones?). You might also suggest unlimited LTE plans with 2-3 Gig plans for fallback 3G.
As an aside, I am happy with AT&T :good: as a carrier, and not only is my whole family with them, but so is my business. I can say (without any other connection to AT&T) that I have received exceptional service when I go to my local AT&T store.
I wanted to make sure and mention the positive because i have found more traction when bringing up some positives in these types of discussions, versus sounding like i am blasting them. I hope this helps you.

I think in the big scheme of things the xda members are a fairly small segnent of the business, but that being said, we're not a bunch of dummies, we're all very up to date on what's available as far as equipment and which carrier has which features. So we're small, but educated, don't assume we're unaware of what other carriers are doing and what our phones are capable of.
1. Support Google Wallet
2. More options for data plans. As previous poster said, Allow unlimited data plans that have LTE for up to X amount of GB, then fall to 3G. Maybe even fall to EDGE after 10 GB.
3. Forget tethering nonsense. Data is data, does it matter whether it through the phone or tethered to a computer?
4. Maybe institute tiered fees to allow earlier upgrades of hardware while under contract. Maybe 100$ fee after 6 months, 50$ after a year, etc
5. Most important - faster OTA updates!!!
Plans to bring back favorite numbers? ie. unlimited calling to numbers saved as favorite numbers...
It's still offered on other providers(verizon) and i dont want to pay $30 for some messaging plan with free any mobile to mobile..
Give us tethering without having to pay extra for it.
Approve Samsungs firmware updates quicker.

Whats the worst that can happen? Last time I was tethering to my PS3 and was downloading a games and got a text from T-Mobile that I should get wifi hotspot if I want to continue to tether.
I can still tether though but what could happen? What about torrents?

They can most likely cancel your contract because you violated their TOS. That, or automatically upgrade you to a tethering plan..

All they will do is throttle/disable the tether till beginning of next billing cycle. They won't terminate your contract. The new plans they have come with 500 MB's for free.
It does not I repeat does not violate any terms of service. All they do is send you a message saying if you like to continue tethering please upgrade to a higher package or something to that effect. But no way with a just cancel your contract because that means they lose money. So don't worry about getting terminated from a contract because nobody major corporation whatever do that unless you like stole from them.

It's exactly this reason that we have to hide our tethering. Don't be cheap. Buy internet for your home. It actually makes more sense. If you are gaming our latency and game side to server path will be a lot more consistent and reliable. Tethering is not meant to replace your home network. It is meant to be used while out and about. Also it is very selfish to tax the network and cripple your fellow Tmobile users to by hooking up devices that are meant to be enjoyed on a home network. IMHO:cyclops:

The more people that tether PS3's the worse it is for the network, that just makes the end user experience slower service and chock it up as tmobile LTE/4G being crap.
Tmobile have done a great job recently with all these rollouts and the restructuring of its plans, if we are to move up to #3 out of the top 4 carriers we need to let everone enjoy the network, for the first time in a long time tmobile sets to show a positive number of signups this quater.
If you want to keep enjoying lower rates, please get yourself a $19.99 DSL plan. Last thing we need is for tmobile to be bought out by sprint or someone else. Then we all lose.

There is no reason to tether your ps3 to your phone if you have internet at home.
Its abusing the system, people who are downloading 80gb as you say are the ones who make all of us suffer and its the reason tmobile stops tethering.

Hope this helps, I also tether, I dont see anything wrong with it, it is wrong when you do it on a daily basis to avoid paying for internet and specially if your tethering 80gb worth.
Also most of the new roms ie wicked v4 have native tethering. There also trevE mod that helps bypass the provision.

Can anyone tell me if they're able to use the built in hotspot for free with unlimited data on Verizon, or perhaps an app that allows wifi tether without root on this phone?
Really want the Note 4. Don't mind waiting for root, or even if it never comes, but I have to have hotspot immediately.
Looks like Foxfi doesn't work on tmobile or Sprint Note 4 yet. They can use Bluetooth or usb but no wifi tether. Give Foxfi a few weeks and they should have it fixed.

Hmm yea that's what I'm afraid of. Need it day 1, not weeks. Will have to wait to order until there is a confirmed method.
I could be wrong as I've been out of the foxfi loop for a year or so but I thought KitKat and beyond broke that capability without unlocking through the carrier..... I bought tether by clockworkmod and use USB tether which works great. I wish WiFi tether worked as I'm in unlimited as well but I believe you need root otherwise to somehow disable the carrier subscription check. Anybody confirm this?

I can also verify that it works. The FoxFi app walks you through the steps, you need to add a certificate, and every time you turn it on, you have to go into the system settings and turn it on there also.

I don't know about FoxFi, but if you pay Verizon $30/month to add the WiFi tethering feature to your plan, you can legally use the Mobile Hotspot feature built into Android with your unlimited data plan. What's even better is you don't run the risk of Verizon catching you breaching their Terms of Service: if you're paying them for the privilege, then you are fully within your rights to avail yourself of that privilege. So even if Verizon is looking at all my packets and going "hmm, that looks a lot like Windows Update... wait, our phones don't use Windows Update!" they can't do anything to me. They would have no cause to terminate my contract.
I'm pretty sure the "base" Terms of Service for the unlimited data plan contract has a clause about tethering not being allowed. That restriction is lifted, of course, if you pay for the mobile hotspot feature. And no, turning on the mobile hotspot feature does not change your plan, so you don't lose your unlimited data by enabling it!
I'd rather not take the risk with something that you literally cannot get back if they take it away.

Maybe, instead of guessing and giving people the wrong information you can refer the the agreement Verizon has with the FCC. They are not allowed to block tethering.

So, two things:
1. As I said in my first post, Verizon would be entitled to cancel your service at any time if they discover you are breaching their Terms of Service (ToS). Irrespective of what Federal law says, they can write anything they want into their ToS, and terminate your contract at any time, for any reason. If Verizon thinks it is against their ToS that you're tethering on an unlimited plan without paying them $30/month, and you're doing it, then Verizon can cancel your subscription to their services, and there's nothing you as "the little guy" can do. This has nothing to do with the law, and just what Verizon is willing to accept, and what you agreed to when you signed up with them.
2. If you violate the Terms of Service, you could technically be liable for civil (non-criminal) penalties if Verizon can prove that you somehow caused them harm. I'm not sure if they'd bother trying to sue you, but it's possible.
Again, I stated that I choose this particular method because I do not want to take the risk that Verizon might have cause to cancel my services with them. That would be a very severe blow to me and I would have to search long and hard to find a viable replacement for the things I do (using lots of data on the road, for instance). It doesn't matter if what you're doing is legal or not. If Verizon doesn't want to offer you service because of something you did, they can cancel your service, and you have absolutely no say about it. I prefer to give them as few things to complain about as possible, to maximize my chances that my use of unlimited data will continue as long as possible.
The reality of it is that carriers still have us users by the balls, and they will never, ever be held liable in any way for refusing or canceling service to a customer for any reason. Since this is a service that is no longer offered to new customers and is highly valued, we have a lot of motivation to hang on to what we have.
Other people are free to take the risk, of course. That's their own decision.
I totally agree with you! I added Hotspot to my plan and love being able to do it legally. A large company like Verizon if they decide to cancel you for illegally tethering I'm sure nothing could be done.
You know what... you are absolutly right. I shall eat my delicious shoe. I did call customer service for clairifaction and oddly enough the rep I spoke with said tether away. They won't stop you for doing it. There are not that many unlimited subscribers left (out of 100mil, I don't know what not a lot means) but I asked them to note my account with those notes just in case.
I know I'm glad to be able to get tethering legally. I had such a hard time with AT&T grandfathered data. They definitely can tell if you bypassing their system. When I tethered the browser would redirect to a subscription page even though they don't have unlimited data with tethering. I switched to tmobile and could get around tethering block but coverage sucked, and dropped calls with full bars. I'm sure Verizon could block illegal tethering easily if they wanted to, I just want to be ahead of the game if they decide too.
