How should I format my new microSD card? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, firstly I want to mention I tried searching, but didn't find what I want to know. My new 8GB microSD card just arrived. I am replacing the default crappy Samsung 4GB card.
Do I have to format it in some manner, different partitions? I had been using (probably have to reinstall) MildWild 5.0. I have 4ext recovery.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Though people report success with 4ext and such it is best to use gparted. It is the standard linux tool and in case you run into partitioning problems you will have to use this anyway. You need to partition if you are planning any manner of a2sd scheme. The guide link in my signature will give detailed instructions.

Thank you. I will get on it.

Just use 4ext recovery, it's easier and faster and works like a charm.
Also you can align partitions in 4ext.

Everything I learnt about flash disk partitioning I learnt here and it makes quite a difference in performance:
ttps://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Solid_State_Drives (add h to the beginning, I can't post links yet)
Pay attention to aligning your partition and noatime.
Apparently 4EXT does your aligning for you, as does fdisk on linux.
My current ROM has a nice option to disable read time writing (noatime) which gives you a bit of a boost too.
It's a long read but now I understand what's going on!

[Q] SD Card Partition

Hi,
I am planning to partition my standard 4GB SD Card that comes with the Desire and reserve 512Mb for apps, I have the WWE Unbranded Stock Froyo 2.2.1 ROM and was wondering what tool is the best way of partitioning.
I have heard ROMmanager is the easiest way, but I do not know what extentsion to choose, Can someone help me?
Thank you.
You can either use Gparted or MiniTool Partitioner (both do the job) or you can do it via recovery (i suggest AmonRa).
You can find tut's on both mentioned applications here on xda or YT.
rom manager is the easiest but not the fastest partition setup.. i suggest gparted. create the boot disc and u have it for whenever u need it

The extensions would be best if you folow instuction and recomandations of the rom you are about to flash. not all are the same.
Thank you all for your reply's. I have standard stock 2.2 ROM as mentioned with ClockworkMod.
I can't get hold of Linux atm, so GParted is out of the question. Also I want to know what extension is best suited for my rom and card.
Many Thanks.
Sorry, need quick reply. Thanks.

Okay thank you, but I unable to burn anything on a disk atm, so What other good alternatives are there?
And What is the best 'extended filesystem' would you recommend for my rom?
Sorry for double post. I have just read somewhere that partitioning SD Card for my ROM is useless as it won't detect it as an internal memory or something like that.
Could someone tell me a latest Fresh Stock Rom that has been modified in anyway and has the Data2SD/Apps2SD capability? Starburst?
Thank you!

[Q] Partitioning SD card...

Right I am a complete noob to this scene of flashing and roms and what not.
So far I have rooted my HTC Desire and used Titanium back up to back up apps and system data.
I am now in the stage of partitioning but dont know which way to go, I have done a lot of research and cannot make my mind.
ROM Manager has a limit and can cause problems.
Gparted confuses the hell out of me.
I am planning to use Minitools partition program as a friend recommended it to me but I heard other problems can occur. However this does seem like the easier way.
Any advice?
What part of GParted confuses you? I find it incredibly easy to use, either by boot CD or on ubuntu...if it's just the "making the boot CD" part then I recommend sticking with it because once it boots it's real easy (IMO of course )
Sorry if this post is unhelpful btw - just wondering what part you find confusing!

Well some tutorials say you have to use it when you boot your pc/laptop unless Im wrong.
Plus I have no blank CDs
Yeah you can. It's really worth buying a blank CD though
Have you thought of installing this?
http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/windows-installer
It installs on your hard drive, and you can select to boot it when you start your computer. You can then download GParted when ubuntu loads up, and use it that way - it's quite simple tbh. Take a look here for more info: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide
Plus, it's always handy to have an easily accessible version of ubuntu (or so I've found...)
Okay if I do use that method do I get my laptop to read the SD card through the Desire as I have no SD card reader?
In addition I heard Minitools Partitioning wizards is much simpler?
I've never used Minitools Partitioning wizard, sorry.
But yeah, if you boot into recovery then enable USB storage (obviously whilst plugged into the laptop...) you'll be able to partition it. Just make sure you know what you're doing and that you have any files you want to keep backed up.
If you just want to partition for CM 7.0.0, ROM Manager is the thing for you. You won't go over those limits, trust me. Other thing is, if you do it in gparted, your Phone will think the sd-card is corrupted and wants to format it.
--breecube
It's vica versa. ROM manager is crap. made my card corupt 2 times.
Gparted made card seen corrupted by phone? Well, you've done something wrong.
Just install Ubuntu (can be on pendrive if u dont want dual boot), and install gParted on it (it has nice GUI unlike this one from Live CD).
Problems fix'd, its nice & easy.
ROM Manager also formats the card before partitioning. Not the way to go (cause I lost my phone data - including backup - when formatting from ROM Manager).
Anyway - you don't need a CD for Gparted - you can mount the ISO file in any virtual machine (Virtual Box/VMWare) and it'll run perfectly.
Just make sure that the EXT partition is a PRIMARY partition. Confusing, yes - but it isn't. Your FAT32 (current partition with your data etc) is PRIMARY, and so will this.
In other words - you should have two primary partitions.
Cheers
How do you partition in the recovery mode? sorry for the noob question. I partitioned my sd card using Rom manager so now its EXT2 right? how do i make it to EXT3? thank you

[Q] nervous newbie with basic questions.

Hi all. Sorry for these basic questions. I only just now got round to rooting, s-off, partitioned my SD card and downloaded a new ROM (latest Leedroid)
I followed this excellent video tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084
Now very nervous about the final steps;
Are EXT partitions backwards compatible, ie: EXT4 ok to use as EXT3 and so on?
(I formatted my SD card with a EXT4 but the ROM I want to use says EXT3)
Do I have to re-install all my apps again once the new ROM is loaded, and what about the ones I bought? How to re-license them?
Finally, is the Baseband the same as the Radio (or where do I find Radio info on phone)
Thank you for any help.
EXT4 is faster than ext3. I am pretty sure, as long as it's an rom which is not too old it will also support ext4. A search through the rom's corresponding thread might help.
Just backup and restore your apps with titanium backup. The license from bought apps should be backed up and restored. Never read about someone who has problems at this point. If you really have problems, contact the dev of the app.
Yes, baseband is just another name for radio. You find out your one in Settings > About Phone.
Before you flash your new ROM install titanium backup. Do a batch backup of all of your apps and app data. That way, once you've flshed your new ROM you can just install titanium backup again and reinstall all of your apps and data as they'll be stored on your sd card.
As for bought apps, they should still be available anyway as they're linked to your google account. So as long as you sign in to google on your new ROM with the same account the market should recognize that you've already bought them and make them available for you again.
If it helps...
Thanks for your reply.
Say that I want to be sure and create a EXT3 partition as instructed, do I still need to keep EXT4 I created on rooting procedure?
You dont need EXT4 for Rooting (you dont need any EXT partition for this at all)
Either keep it, or delete and make EXT3 its up to you, EXT4 is slightly faster though.

When you followed the Desire rooting guide you mentioned did you follow step five? If you did then you will have partitioned your sd card with ext4. Basically you only need two partitions on your sd card at any time. So now you have ext4 & fat32 (the main part of your sd card will always be fat32, with a recommended 1gb of ext3 or ext4).
If you check here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16808961#post16808961on you'll see that you can use ext3 or ext4 with Leedroid HD 3.3.3.
If you do want to get ext3 then just run GParted again (step 5 in the guide) and this time select ext3 instead of ext4.
Hope it helps.

Is Leedroid HD 3.3.3 safe to use as a first time custom ROM?

I haven't tried Leedroid myself, but from browsing the thread it has some good reviews. Closest one I've tried is InsertCoin, but it's all about trying a few and seeing what you like.
Glad I could help.
LeeDroid is safe for a first custom rom. Rather fast and have minimal lag.
Just to say thanks to all that helped / replied.
I went ahead and installed LeedRoid 3.3.3 successfully.
Took a little gamble on the radio update as the instructions did not seem to match my set-up but all is working well.
Might need to look for a ROM with bigger text size as my eyes are struggling
Cheers all

Partition questions and sd specs.

Please direct me to an idiots guide to SD partitioning...
I have been flashing my desire since the summer. And well i forgot how i initially setup my SD card.
I wanted to treat my self to a new CLASS 10 SD card. But when it came to partitioning the card i got lost.
Is it as simple as using clockworkmod to set partition size to 1-2Gigs? and swap to 0?
With reference to Ext2,ext3 and ext4 are these all multiple partitions? None of these where options within clockwork or rom manager
Anyway i did my partitions using clockwork and installed a new rom i had never used before runnymede. I found performance extremely sluggish and slow. Of course i did 3 new things at once. new card, new partition and new rom... could be one or all these causing me headaches..
Sorry to ramble on. Bottom line:
- Could i be kindly directed to a SD partitioning guide?
- Is the Desire compatible with 2,4, and 10?

The class 10 SD card should be OK with your desire.
The people in the know mostly recommend not using ROM Manager to partition SD cards. I would suggest try using GParted.
In terms of ext2, 3, 4 - I would recommend ext 3 for your SD card partition - it is safer than ext 2 partitions.
I would suggest an ext 3 partition size of 1024mb or even 2048mb (that should cover you for most present roms and most future roms).
I am not as knowledgeable as some of the other guys here but I will give you an useful link:
http://www.techcredo.com/android/tu...-for-a2sd-with-gparted-on-a-windows-pc-ext234
I usually create a bootable GParted USB drive and use to partition my SD cards.
I hope that helps,
KKH
I have been trying to create an ext4 partition using GParted. I did all necessary steps - will quickly run thru, just so you know:
1. Burnt ISO and accessed thru boot menu (running XP/SP3, btw)
2. Deleted existing allocation.
3. Created new primary partition as FAT32
4. Allocated "free space following" as 1024
5. Specified the unallocated memory (1024) as ext4.
There was no error in the operation.
However... When I tried to load stuff to the SD card, Windows prompted me to format the card before using. It made no sense but I couldn't do anything. And by formatting it, I lost everything that GPL had done in the first place.
I went over the process again, to no avail.
Does anyone know where I've possibly gone wrong? Please help.
Which recovery are you using?
I had the same issue, vista kept asking me to format SD card before use.
I fixed this by making my first partition in GParted the fat32 and the second partition ext3.
I think windows accesses the first partition by default and is happy with fat32.
If your ext4 was the first partition, windows would ask to format that ext4 in to fat32 before use.
I hope that helps.
thanks i should be good to go now..

If you install 4EXT Recovery, you won't ever need a bootable disk to partition your SD card. You'll be able to do it straight from recovery I suggest you to give it a try!
My recovery is 4ext and I used this recovery to make partitions of my class10 sd card.
I also use this recovery to align my partitions.
You can also use the freeware "minitool partition wizard" under win xp instead of gparted.
Good luck.

If the OP uses this tool, he needs more than good luck. It's like rootSU says in his sig: "Don't be lazy and make GParted your first choice...". So please do not trust in windows software which wants to handle linux partitions.

[Q] Creating ext4 partition on SD Card

I want to partition my Micro SD Card in order to install the Supernova ROM which requires this.
However i'm having trouble finding an easy to use program which will let me partition the micro sd card as FAT32 primary and ext4 secondary. I just want a simple program where I don't need to enter any windows command prompts or which requires me to burn an iso.
Also if I create a 512mb partition what Swap Size should I have?
Any help appreciated.
1. I would recommend Gparted, but since you dont want to burn an iso, you can just use 4ext recovery
2. AFAIK you dont need swap to run Supernova
Thanks for the reply. I have 4EXT Recovery updater but I can't work out how to partition using it. I think I need to boot into recovery to do it but if I do this I just go into CWM.

I would STRONGLY recommended "4ext Recovery" (look at 4ext dot net). It's a little bit more than what you are actually looking for, but trust me, it will be worth it. Especially the "USB unbrick" function can save a hundred bucks for a new Desire. And, of course, you can partition SD cards and even correct alignment.
Installation of this recovery is easy, can be done via apk/App. Moreover the touch installer is fun.

I suppose, you're talking about CWM _Recovery_? If so, your 4ext installation was not successful. Run "4ext Recovery Updater" again, select "just download" and flash manually with e. g. fastboot.
BTW: When I installed it the first time, I had to install the latest "Non Touch" version first, then updated to the Touch Installer. WFM.

Thanks its working now and I'm in 4EXt recovery and I'm going to reformat my SD card and begin partitioning (I've backed it up on my PC).
I did try and use the option to keep the FAT32 portion of my SD Card and just create a ext4 partition but it kept erroring saying there was too little space on the device. However this shouldn't be the case as there's about 7 GB of free space on it and I was only trying to create a 512 MB partition.
Free space within the FAT partition doesn't help for creating another partition (like a lot of free room in your house [aka partition] doesn't help when trying to build a second house on your claim [aka SD Card] - in fact you need non partitioned space on the SD card _after_ your FAT partition.
IIRC ext4's creation of a _new_ ext4 partition does not include shrinking already existing partition(s), it can just convert or re-format formerly built partitions. Thus you have to shrink your FAT first (with e. g. gparted), then you can create another partition.
Be aware that shrinking a partition may result in total loss of all data!
Greets, Magpie
Best way...Copy everything on Fat32 to a backup location on PC, allow 4ext to completely repartition the card. That way, everything will be aligned to block too (faster data access).
+1, I LOVE it 4ext

I am s-off. I found out that recovery touch is not flashing. Instead of downloading and installing I clicked download then clicked install. It said critical installation error. I have read other forums and it was mentioned but to me there was not really a definite answer. So I'm stumped again. I can't tell you how long it is taking me to do all of this. Can anyone provide a step by step process to create a FAT32 partition and an ext4 partition using 4Ext recovery touch please?
There doesn't seem to be an idiots guide on the net and I'm frankly lost!
I understand that I need to wipe/format the sd card where I can then create the partitions I require but I can't even do this.
Can anyone help?
Mini-Tool Partition Wizard is a pretty straight forward method for partitioning. I have read that it can be unreliable, though I have never had an issue. How-to here
But best bet is always gParted, imo. Haven't tried 4EXT yet, although I do use it for flashing, so can't comment. I'd recommend going to the effort of gParted. Also, if installing 4Ext, spend a buck or two for the Control version. Well worth it.
