Hi,
I am planning to partition my standard 4GB SD Card that comes with the Desire and reserve 512Mb for apps, I have the WWE Unbranded Stock Froyo 2.2.1 ROM and was wondering what tool is the best way of partitioning.
I have heard ROMmanager is the easiest way, but I do not know what extentsion to choose, Can someone help me?
Thank you.
You can either use Gparted or MiniTool Partitioner (both do the job) or you can do it via recovery (i suggest AmonRa).
You can find tut's on both mentioned applications here on xda or YT.
rom manager is the easiest but not the fastest partition setup.. i suggest gparted. create the boot disc and u have it for whenever u need it

The extensions would be best if you folow instuction and recomandations of the rom you are about to flash. not all are the same.
Thank you all for your reply's. I have standard stock 2.2 ROM as mentioned with ClockworkMod.
I can't get hold of Linux atm, so GParted is out of the question. Also I want to know what extension is best suited for my rom and card.
Many Thanks.
Sorry, need quick reply. Thanks.
Why to get hold of linux?
Download Gparted from their website: http://gparted.sourceforge.net/download.php

Okay thank you, but I unable to burn anything on a disk atm, so What other good alternatives are there?
And What is the best 'extended filesystem' would you recommend for my rom?
Sorry for double post. I have just read somewhere that partitioning SD Card for my ROM is useless as it won't detect it as an internal memory or something like that.
Could someone tell me a latest Fresh Stock Rom that has been modified in anyway and has the Data2SD/Apps2SD capability? Starburst?
Thank you!

Nice to be in the New World of Desire
Hi im new to the HTC Desire, i have previous experience of rooting with the HTC Hero which is simple. i am finding it difficult to get my way around a few things.
I havent rooted the phone yet!
What is the easiest method of rooting?
The memory on phone is getting full, can i get a (APP2SD) like the Hero?
How do i quickly get to recovery mode? eg (HOME+POWER buttons on the hero)
What is the best rom with sense 2.2 on it?
Will my HTC HERO 8GB GOLDCARD with formatting such as ext2 &ext3 work on the Desire? (I think the partiton is 512mb?)
can you please add specific links to each section please! eg. (quotations from links)
It would be grateful if any1 could help
Thanks in advance
1) Easyest method of rooting is unrevoked ... www.unrevoked.com/recovery
2) yes just flash a rom with apps2sd
3) hold vol down & power for recovery
4) the best rom is a matter of opinion so test them all
5) yes but you may want a bigger ext partition

if you have a pc with a cd burner, download the ubuntu live cd and use gparted to play with your partitions http://www.ubuntu.com/
data2sd is like apps2sd but also moves the /data/data/ directory, this feature is still in development, and not advised unless you have a high class sd card
I am a bit noob so go easy on me...
I have my wildfire rooted and wit CMD 7.1 RC but i whant to try other ROMS. The one I want is RUYMANCA 7.2.
In his post he talks about partitioning but i don't really understand how this should be done.
Do i do it after flashing or before?
Does the "a2sd" command does this automatically?
How can I do it?
Can someone give me a small step-by-step?
Thanks in advance
Partitioning is necessary only if you want to use apps2sd scripts.
You can do it from the rom manager or from the recovery. Or you can use pc utilities like "gparted live cd" to partition your memory card.
Sent from my Blade using XDA App
And to complement Bharat: it is not necessairy to install a2sd. It is a script that makes an ext-partition on your sdcard that can be used as an extention of the internal memory. So android will act as if its internal memory is expanded. This is usefull because really all apps can be put on the sd-card. Drawback is of course that your sdcard capacity will be less.
If you ever want to do that, you can easely partition your sdcard from the "advanced" menu in clockworkmod recovery.
Erwin
Thanks for the answers.
I will try that, then. I'm sure there is a thread that explains the partitioning process, i will try to find it.
Do I need to get S-OFF in order for A2SD to work properly ???
Would appreciate comments pls ...

1. root it (alpharev/unrevoked)
2. s-off (revolutionary)
3. NAND backup the current ROM from recovery mode
4. flash custom HBoot based on your requirement (refer to table in alpharev.nl)
[by this you get more internal memory increased, maximum you can get
332Mb for data]
5. install custom ROM of your choice which uses different scripts to move apps
to sd (s2e, a2sd, data2ext, etc....)
6. NABD backup the newly installed custom ROM
7. partition SD card for Fat32 and EXT3 (1gb) using gparted
8. reflash it the custom rom or restore from the back
you can refer to rooting guide which is available in the xda forum, below url may also help you regarding custom roms

What our sarcastic friend Terepin is trying to say is that you can't really use the SD card as an extension of your phone's internal memory without using an A2SD ROM.

Root your phone mate, and then use a RoM with data2SD If you want to stay with HTC sense then I recommend Droidzones RoMs.
This one is Sense 2.1
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1143456
And this one is Sense 1.0
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045824
Note you will need a SD card class 4 and above, Read up about Gparted after you have Rooted your phone this will let you partition your Sd card Giving you upto 2GB internal Memory.
If your bored of HTC Sense, I recommend MIUI RoM its superb
Good luck
HUummm... why is it always so hard for me?
I tried to root with un Revoked which I have used in the past but that failed because I have 2.3.3 installed.
I then went back to my Froyo RUU but that failed because of the H Boot.
Finally I rooted with http://revolutionary.io and now need to sort myself out with a ROM.
Just a note: you don't need Gparted for ext partition. You can either format your entire card with CWM, or you can use free partition manager EASUS Partition Master Home to create ext3 partition and then convert it with alignement script from coolexe. It certainly saves time.

Only down side to using recovery its max size is 512MB. EASUS dont like because its windows app, I find it best to use Gparted because its Linux witch android its self is based on.

Just give some Roms ago mate, you dont like you can always jump to another one. if its more space you want look for RoMs with data2sd or data2ext.
I repartitioned my sdcard using 4ExtRecovery. 1gb ext4, and128k swap. Brilliant themable recovery.

Hi everybody,
got the same problem as the person who started this thread with the memory issues. Done everything except install a custom rom, which I am about to do.
(note: currently 0n 2.3.3)
Currently have CM 7.1 downloaded on computer and going to install....BUT every instruction i see requires me to have rom manager/ clockworkmod recovery. HOWEVER, I can't install these because ''this app can't be installed in your country''. unfortunately used to this.
So does anyone by chance have any links to instructions or have instructions of how I can install this without downloading any apps, hopefully an idiot proof version.(Not worried about saving a recovery etc....phone is basically blank.)
Also would CM 7.1 be a good start?? Is there any easier rom to install that still has the apps2sd feature which is the primary point of doing all this( maybe miui).
Thanks in advance for any help.
Regards,
rkdeane
Everything you need is in the Desire Developement forum - STICKY!
You don't apps, just root (S-OFF is a good choice too) and custom recovery (like CWM, AmonRa).

Hello guys,
i have installed a custom Rom with android 2.3.4 in the hope to get some more apps running on my old desire. Unfortunately as soon as i install one or two apps there is not enough space. I have read quite a bit in the forum but cant find really a step by step solution for that. So far i have rooted my device and installed a custom rom.
Could someone please help me how to get my phone fixed so i at least can install a few apps on to it, especially navigon and candy crush
TIA
You'll have to partition your sd-card to get more app space. Check out the partitioning guide in my signature.
Would you mind telling what rom did you install?

Then use 4ext instead. Read the guide, it shows you how.
Hi,
I want to install a ROM which does NOT need a SD card partition. Can someone please advise me?
thanks
Paul
I believe mildwilds redux rom works without an ext partition. (someone correct me if im wrong).
Why dont you want an a partition though?...more space is always a good thing, no?

Most ROMs require an sd card partition to make the most of app space, it's not too difficult as long as it's done correctly (using gparted or 4EXT recovery)
However, SuRoot's dGB ROM was specifically designed without an sd card partition. You can use traditional froyo apps2sd to utilise all of your sd card space without partitioning. (or you can flash an a2sd script separately if you do want to use a partition with it)
To make the most of that ROM, you need to be s-off and flash the custom hboot with 60MB /system. That way you get a much larger /data partition (375MB compared to only 147MB on stock)
Details are on his site
I'm selling my Desire
... it isn't how it sounds
I mean the phone!
I've already got a ROM with a partitioned SD card but I am going to flog my Desire on t'bay and want to get it to a non-SD ROM so it isn't too confusing for some unsuspecting buyer.
thanks for the advice

Oh, ok. Just make sure you choose a suitable hboot that will leave lots of space on /data.
Well if ur selling the phone then i personaly would put it back to stock s-on, that way who ever buys it cant complain about anything.
