I am trying to play my video from my SGS3 to my smart tv. When playing a video while on the same wifi as my tv, there is a little icon at the top of the screen on the phone that allows you to pick your display. When I pick the "Smart TV" display, the video is sent seamlessly to the tv. However, I am having a problem with orientation. Videos downloaded to my phone are perfect, but videos I record from my phone are not. A video taken in portrait mode shows up on the tv sideways, and a video taken in landscape mode shows up upside down. It displays normally on the phone. Anyone have any ideas?
Another question: Does anyone know what needs to be installed for this to work? I'm guessing it uses dlna via allshare, but when i put a custom rom on the phone, I no longer have the option to send the video to the tv.
FYI: For those of you that do not have a smart tv, but do have pc or something else running XBMC, you can also use this feature, but I'm guessing you have to enable dlna in XBMC. Works great! (Same issues with orientation though)

Use bubble upnp. I'm on stock and I hardly use allshare, in fact I have disabled it and use bubble upnp.

Thanks for the response. I installed bubble upnp and it does the same thing. However, I did take a few more videos and noticed the way you hold the phone matters. If I take the video in landscape mode with the home button on the right, it displays perfectly. If I have the phone in landscape with the home button on the left, the image is inverted when played through upnp, but normal on the device. Also, if the video is done in portrait mode, the orientation is rotated 90°. Is this what happens with you?
Also, if anyone else has any suggestions for upnp apps, please post them here.
Try Twonky Mobile or Twonky Beam, theses are the most reliable for me, with the added bonus with Twonky Beam to be able to send any video from the web.

So I've converted some files to mp4's, and had previous mp4 files before, but whenever it's in the webtop display, I can't mirror the image to the Laptop dock. Had the same issue with my HD TV. The screen is completely black and when I close the monitor down, the phone shows the remote (like you have when connected to a TV) and it's blocking the video (I can barely see a row of pixels moving at the bottom) which leads me to believe that the remote thing is covering up the video somehow. Is there a way to fix this?? I can't understand why they wouldn't allow you to watch your videos on a bigger screen. Is there a setting I just need to change or is this working as intended and I need to get some kind of hack for it? I just wanna be able to watch my anime I convert to mp4 on the laptop dock screen. I tried to mess with a video player through accessing my phone via webtop, but it's such a small resolution and looks terrible. Any idea's??
Hey guys
For you that are using this on your tv, which adapters are you using?
How well does it play 1080p HD mkv files over hdmi to your tv? I'm not sure how the resolution would work for this to a 1080p TV.
You can get a Samsung wired hdmi converter on ebay for about $10. Or the allshare wireless dongle for about $40 or $50. Keep in mind if you root the Allcast dongle will no longer work.

Two times no...
I use a rooted P605 and my Allcast Share Dongle works despite the system status Custom which did not work on my N8000.
I did yet find no wired adapter which works with the P605, either partial, intermittend or no display. And the Samsung store showd no official adapter.
Erstellt mit meinem Note 10.1 2014 LTE
This is the one I had bought previously for my Note 2, which also works on the G Note 14 as well....

Maybe the LTE version works...mine didn't I had to return and exchange it. Even flashing back to stock would not work after I tripped the flash counter

Has anyone tried playing 1080p movies via HDMI to the TV? How does it run? I'm wondering if the movies actually get played at 1080p?

I played 1080p game trailers and movie trailers using an HDMI connection. It plays whatever the source is. One thing to note though. Playing videos with any app other than the default video app does not fill the screen all the way. There will be borders on the sides and top/bottom. It's not horrendous but is noticeable. However if you play using the default video player this gets corrected somehow when being output to the tv.

Great! Just wondering, is there any lag at all when playing 1080p movies. I was watching some videos of the Nexus 10 doing it since its probably the most similar device to ours right now and the reviewer mentioned there is a bit of lag since it has to power the video on both screens. Unless there's a way to turn off the tablet and just let it use the TV as the screen.
Also does the default player support mkv? I don't have my note to test it out right now.
Just make sure to buy the 5 -> 11 pin MHL adapter if using a normal MHL adapter. Just like the Note 2, the standard 5 pin MHL adapter won't work.
Also, don't forget it has to be a powered MHL device.
I have to do the same thing for my GN2 on my Pioneer App Radio. Only I use an adapter.

For videos, you won't notice any lag since you're just watching the video. Not to mention, when using the stock video player app it detects that you're playing the video on a larger screen and shuts down the output on your tablet screen so it's only visible on your tv. For games though, you may perceive a little lag since you're actually controlling what happens on the screen.
I haven't tested playing mkv's on the stock video app on the tablet but I can confirm they play on my galaxy note II so they should work. The only thing is that the stock video app doesn't support all audio codecs so if your mkv file contains dts audio you'll probably run into issues as the stock app won't be able to decode.
Apps like Archos video player (along with the free codec pack) should work fine for playing everything.

The tablet screen stays on during hdmi out and if you turn off the screen it stops hdmi output. The reasoning is that when you turn the screen off you are turning off the digitizer, too. Otherwise, you wouldn't be able to control the device during playback.

Fair enough. But if I want to have 2 hours of constant playback for a movie without having to pause or anything, is there any app that does turn off the screen while its playing other than the stock app? I don't want the same thing to be playing on 2 screens at once. The stock app was mentioned saying that it automatically does turn off the screen while playing back via HDMI, which is cool. Sadly it doesn't play the audio on some of my MKV files cause of the codec, but MX player does. I'm looking to replace my laptop with this if possible to connect to my TV to play movies, but it should hopefully work just as well as the laptop otherwise it isn't worth it. I wouldn't be connecting this to the TV for anything other than movies anyway.

There are a couple schools of thought. Unfortunately I do not know of any way to turn off the screen during playback. However, there are a couple of apps out there which turn off the backlight during HDMI playback. One of which I believe is called screen off which you can find on the Play Store. The other is called tasker which allows you to create a system trigger event task that will do X when Y happens. Some people have said they're able to have the backlight turn all the way down when HDMI out is detected.

Sorry, it doesn't turn the scrim off but it dims the screen quite a bit to where it's hard to tell it's on and does not actually show the video that's being played. I should've been more clear.

No apology needed. There are a lot of new members on the forums and they can be easily confused. I just thought it appropriate to clarify.

Hi all,
Thanks for taking the time out to help me.
I have a Samsung Tab PRO 8.4, and until recently it has been fine.
The problem with it is that for some reason, I cannot stream "live streams". These are things that the Tab PRO is streaming (such as youtube, other streaming apps etc) to my Samsung TV whereas before I could, however downloaded physical files, like movies that I have saved on my Tablet, can be streamed easily by pressing the button in the video app near the top (the button which has the square and a sideways wifi bar), whereas streamed files do not find the TV in "available devices:/
It's quite strange that i can't stream "live" things. When I try to stream youtube, the youtube app says, "There was a problem connecting to [TV]UE46ES6710."
Also, my Samsung S4 and S5 can stream youtube and other "live" streams easily, either using the youtube app, or the default samsung app and pressing the TV.
Please help, sorry if the above sounds confusing. I've tried to make it as plain as possible.
Thank you
I also have this tablet with a Samsung Smart TV.
On the device's YouTube app at upper right corner there is a button like a rectangle that when pressed streams the YouTube video from the tablet to the YouTube app on the Smart TV.
Does your TV have a YouTube app? Have you paired it with the device?
If so try clearing the data/cache from the YouTube app on the device and uninstall/reinstall the YouTube app on TV and pair them again.
Yes, I have factory reset both my TV and my tablet.
My Samsung S5 and S4 can stream youtube, or any other app by pressing the same rectangle button you are talking about, but the tab pro can only stream downloaded files, nothing "live" like YouTube.

So, are you saying that the "rectangle button" does not appear on the device's YouTube app or it is there and when you press it nothing happens?

The rectangle button does appear on YouTube and Samsung video player when I'm streaming something "live" but on the YouTube app it will say it will say error connecting to TV, and on the Samsung video app, it will search for devices but not find any, however if I play a file on my tab pro that is physically saved to it, click video player when choosing which app to use, then click the rectangle icon it will find my tv straight away and plays fine on my TV.

I think I got it but I doubt I can help. I never had an issue with YouTube streaming live content from my tablet on my Samsung Smart TV (UE32F4500) but I also quite frequently run into the problem of streaming from the Samsung Video Player (either "live" or stored content) with the same message you posted, that no device is found. A reboot of the TV or tablet solves it (for hours with no problem until I disconnect them where it might happen again next time).
Some routers have a UPNP option in their settings, that is supposed to make home media streaming better but others have found out that it interferes with their media streaming. My router has such an option and I have disabled it.
Check out if there is firmware update for your TV. I found that sometimes the newest firmware for my TV is available via the TV's update menu and other times the newest firmware is available on Samsung's website.

You might want to check it with Samsung support. They have a chat service on their site and the technical guy responded to me instantly and helped me (thought it was only a TV issue)
The only time I've ever had this type of issue with my GTP 8.4 was caused by my router, which for some reason stopped my Sammy TV being detected (always worked fine all the time with my S3 ) A reboot gave a short term 'fix' but the problem kept coming back.
In the end I switched from a 2wire 2700HGV router to a Billion 7800 and the issue has not shown up again.
Strange but true......
A friend of mine has the Galaxy S5 and he was showing me how he shares his videos wirelessly from his Smartphone to his Plasma TV. The TV has to be, easily a few years old, not sure how old it is, but he's also got a Roku 3. Basically, he hits what looks like a screen mirroring button above the video, next to the file name and the mute button and it searches for a nearby device, then the video (or I suppose pictures as well) play on the selected device.
I'd like to get that to work for my PC, through Windows 7, without having to flip to a different video input. Is this possible, and if so, how?
I saw there was a thread back in November about chromecast issues, but no responses, so I thought I'd start a new thread.
I don't have any issues casting issues with streaming video apps like Fox Sports Go or a Watch ESPN. No issues when casting "local" videos from my SD card within VLC Player (using the cast button in the player app) . No problem with VLC Player with the HDMI connection - but it acts like it is casting (video only shows on the TV). Mirroring the screen looks fine with HDMI. Swiping screens is smooth. I can see the top and bottom of the screen. Audio apps like Pulsar Music Player and Pandora also cast fine.
Here's where it gets weird.
1) When I cast to the TV from Google Home, I get a message that my device is not optimized for casting. Then the mirror mode cuts off the top & bottom of the screen, and the casting is choppy. Swiping from one screen to another is laggy. When I cast with SmartView through settings, no message, but still cut off at the top and bottom, and choppy / laggy.
2) When casting local videos in mirror mode, both with chromecast and hdmi, MxPlayer is _terrible_ distorted and choppy. MxPlayer is fine when not casting.
3) When casting with Google Home or SmartView, VLC Player is choppy, but nowhere near as bad as MX Player
Because both the players work when not casting, it doesn't seem to be a problem with video codecs (although I have no idea which codecs I should use for MX Player - I haven't had any playback issues like I did on the S2).
Anyone know why the issues with chromecast? There were no issues casting with my Tab S2....
Thanks,
Joe
Where is the cast button in VLC? I didn't think it could do that, I just looked again and still don't see it. App is up to date.

Should be on top, right hand side.
I'm using the beta version, 3.0.94 from Jan. 15th. The beta, at least, has supported direct casting from the app for many months.
First enable casting in settings, in the extra settings section - casting is between audio and advanced. Then you'll see a cast icon at the top right of the screen.
Also after a video starts, press the screen to bring up the video controls while the video plays. Again, there will be a cast icon on the top right of the video screen.
This feature may be limited to the beta.
Joe
I have the beta as well latest version I see casting in settings and enabled it but no button on top right.

So I'm new to xda, but I tried attaching three screen shots of vlc, with the cast icon showing in the corner of the first two and the third where it asks which device to cast to. I'm not sure how or if I can embed them in line, but they are hopefully attached. I don't know if it helps you or not. (yes, Browns Hard Knocks... I grew up in Cleveland, a cross I have to bear)
Back on topic,
Is anyone else having issues with mirroring?
Good luck,
Joe
So I've used this more. Smart Cast and Google Home continue to be crappy for mirroring.
SmartCast is choppy, really bad contrast and distorted.
Google Home tells me "your device is not optimized for casting", the contrast and distortion are not so bad, but video plays choppy. Then after 5 minutes it drops connection. Every time.
While it is true that mirror casting is about the worst way to put content onto the TV, there are some apps that just don't support casting. This is a disappointment. You'd think a tab as expensive as this would be best in class.
