I have Galaxy Nexus, I was prompted to Install the Jelly Bean upgrade, but I don't want to.
I know there is a work around to have Flash working, but I don't want to part with Flash and its officla updates just yet. I don't see much gain on Jelly Bean at this moment. If I decide not to upgrade now, will I be able in the future? Will I be prompted again? I don't want to root my device.
Thank you for your assistance.

Keep denying it. Although you make absolutely no sense as to why you wouldn't want Jb. You can install flash and use it just the same. Also since you are upgrading its not going to magically disappear from your phone.

From what I understand OTA Updates come in cycles and have deployment dates. I don't know if that is different between different carriers, phones, or OS levels, but there was a Gingerbread update on my other phone that is no longer available OTA. So it's possible, I guess, that eventually you may not be able to get it at all.

Actually, I just remembered that if you flash a custom Recovery that's one way of ensuring you won't be upgraded to JB automatically as that process requires a stock recovery.
Why you no wantz butter?
Take the update. Its well worth it.
Just install the flash apk
Project butter... I still love my iPhone, but I honestly believe my jelly beans running gnex is smoother. Project butter is amazing.

Flash will remain on your phone if you already have it. Speaking of Flash, the last update on my PC for Firefox hosed my machine and I had to go back a few versions. Sometimes no updates is a good thing.

I'd say go with JB. I only really had ICS the first hour I had the phone (Although I used ICS on my work cell).
As others said, if you already have flash installed, you'll continue to have it. There is absolutely no excuse not to upgrade to jellybean.

...I downloaded the 4.0.4 update and went to install and reboot. But the phone got stuck at the screen with the android belly up and a exclamation point. Pulled the battery and rebooted and was at 4.0.2 still. Haven't gotten another OTA notification. Do I get another OTA alert or do I have to update manually.
I have a GSM Nexus, rooted but with stock 4.0.2. And I activated OTA RootKeeper before downloading the update. Any help will be greatly accepted.

Besides root and maybe unlock your bootloader, did you change anything in your system (install mods, different radio etc. or rename system files)? If you are not completely stock your OTA will not work and you will have to update manually or get back to Stock first.

Nothing changed. Except for root and unlocked bootloader everything is stock.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
Well the screen you were looking at (Android belly up) is the stock recovery. If you see that: no need to pull battery. Simply push volume up + power simultaneously and you'll get into the recovery menu. Scrolling through the options can be done with the volume buttons, select with the power button.
That said: I think no one knows for sure but I myself would not wait and update myself. There are a lot of guides here on how to do that and if you flash the stock images you will have the same as anyone who had the OTA. Make a proper backup first (you allways should)! You will lose all your data if you have to unlock your bootloader.

Have you installed CWM recovery installed?
The "belly up" android is the phone trying to boot in the stock recovery to update the phone. But as you may have CWM recovery installed (which replaces the stock recovery) the phone cannot complete the update.
You will need to re-install the stock recovery. I believe you can do this with the GNex Toolkit.

Is it possible to get the Stock Recovery Screen when you have CWM installed? Didn't think that was possible... that it would just boot into CWM recovery. That is why I didn't mention it (trying to learn here).

I want to manually flash 4.0.4 and stay unrooted. Should I use the GNex Toolkit to flash 4.0.4 directly or do I need to flash the same version I have on my phone?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
I had the same issue described by the OP, the belly up android when trying to update to 4.0.4 from the OTA notification. I had previously changed to 4.0.2 yakju using efrant's instructions from the first post in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1391881
However, I had skipped the optional sections. In particular step 12 to flash the recovery partition. I went back and just executed step 12 (fastboot flash recovery recovery.img) and rebooted. Then I was able to update to 4.0.4 successfully from the OTA notification.
I'm guessing I didn't have the "stock recovery" because I previously had the default Samsung version?

Hey guys, I'm getting the GN in a week and I have some questions.
1. The difference between Takju, and Yakju are the same right? Except google wallet, and I the roms/kernel on XDA is interchangeable right?
2. Let's say google releases jelly bean, do I need to recieve the official Jelly bean update, than flash a custom rom? Or can I just flash a custom jelly bean rom?
3. Flashing radios in CWM, is it permanent?
4. On average, what's the average overclock(CPU) for you guys?
5. For the Nexus toolkit, I can just press #7 and it will do everything for me, right?
*Coming from the G2X*
2. Depends what they change. A new bootloader and radio may come with it, which would need to be flashed before any custom ROM.
3. Yes

1. Should be, yeah. So far, the only difference I've seen is Google Wallet.
2. Either choose to flash stock Jelly Bean when it arrives or go with a Jelly Bean custom ROM when they arrive. It's all just a matter of preference.
3. Yes, until you flash another radio image.
4. I go with the stock clock. I really have no need for overclocking.
5. Yup, given that option 7 is a "one-click" kind of option. I do not use toolkits except for backing up and restoring my EFS.

Takju and Yakju are just versions of the stock ICS firmware, they're perfectly stock with no regional customization. Takju simply has Google Wallet pre installed, that's it. Whether you're on takju or yakju has no bearing on what ROM or kernel you can use.

Once they drop the Jellybean source and/or GNex images, you'll be able to flash any ROM built from it without accepting the OTA first (you'll have anything new separately available to flash if necessary). It'll just be like you're flashing another 4.0.4 ROM.

I guess you could use odin to flash a pre-rooted firmware. Then you would end up on the almost latest firmware, i.e. yakju 4.0.4 IMM76D, ehile the latest is IMM76I but that's easily taken care of with an update.
All you then need to do is maybe unlock your bootloader and keep it unlocked. Use this link and choose the full image option: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1586807
Download the attached odin file in that link and do exactly as Chainfire says.
After all of that is done, use the Galaxy Nexus toolkit to backup your EFS partition! That's where the IMEI is and if you lose the EFS partition somehow, you can always restore the one you backed up.
ODIN is a simple and easy to use tool. Normally not necessary to use if using a Nexus device, but it's good as a last-resort if all else fails and also good for normal use too.

And, let's say I buy the International version, and it comes with Android 4.0.3. Can't I use the toolkit to unlock bootloader, and than install custom rom? Or do I need to get official Android 4.0.4 than install custom rom? I prefer the toolkit, and not ODIN.

The JB ROMS that are out you do need to wipe/factory reset but you can backup all of your apps, etc using something like Titanium Backup or My Backup. Some launchers backup your screens as well. Just make sure you do not restore data.
Note: Since you are asking this here I'm thinking you are already or will be rooted and don't want to wait for the OTA. Whenever that may be.
so what's the difference between official jb and the jb people are updating now?

They gave away Galaxy Nexuses to developers at Google I/O. These specific models got a "preview" release of 4.1 Jellybean OTA'd to them to use before it comes out officially. This is not an official or final build until the images and source are posted. They indicated "mid July" as the timeframe for 4.1 OTA's to the GSM Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S, and Motorola Xoom.

If all you've done is rooted, then you'll get to take the OTA just fine. If you've changed fonts, system apps, applied a custom recovery, etc... you can't take the OTA. Use an app like "OTA root keeper" to save your root from being removed when the update applies.
You won't lose data, apps, or anything like that. It just updates the OS...

Once rooted, why wait for OTA, go and get custom ROMS and if you are looking to get Jellybean, it is available in the respective forums (GSM/CDMA). It is not "official" but nevertheless, it works. You will have to wipe your data and cache but you can save all your apps by using titanium back up or other such apps and restore them once you get the rom. I have been using it for two days and have found it to be snappier than ICS and Google Now and the new notifications are awesome. The only problem I have encountered is the GPS which takes long time to get a fix and is quite inaccurate lot of times. So if you can deal with that, take the plunge otherwise wait for the "official" build.
The GPS issue has been reported to be caused by the new maps update. I tried using the maps in the browser and it worked, dont know what to think of it.

You cannot apply the OTA then. It won't work. You'll have to either install a custom ROM (if that's your thing), or flash back to stock 4.0.4 and wait for the official OTA or update images.
If it took you hours to do the first time, you did something wrong, sorry. Its extremely easy to unlock, root, and flash the Galaxy Nexus.

Your music, pictures, and apps saved on Titanium/Rom Toolbox will be saved.
So really U've got nothing to lose as long as u back ur apps in titanium or Rom Toolbox.
Them after u back up, hit wipe user data and flash the Rom and done.
Then turn it back on and then open titanium or Rom toolbox and hit restore.
Then just customize and it'll seem like nothing has happened to ur user data.

Obviously flashing an OTA is going to unroot your phone (assuming it even installs). But it won't lock your bootloader so it will take 5 seconds to re root.
I'd rather not deal with it but I guess I'll probably have to anyway. I was just wondering if there is anyway to get rid of the message without installing it? Maybe flashing a 4.1.2 ROM?

OTA 4.2 to 4.2?
I have gsm maguro which I recently flashed stock 4.2 takju from 4.1.2 yakju.
I did not expect to be looking at an OTA update notice wanting me to update to 4.2 (which I am already on).
I would have thoght the update manager would check the build and version of my phone before offering update. Could it be that because I did an official OTA update from 4.1.1 yakju to 4.1.2 yakju that I am marked down as being on 4.1.2 now, and so is now offering 4.2 without checking the current build and version I am running.
I would like to know how to get rid of that update notification from my status bar if I can, or if I should do the update anyway. At the moment I have unlocked bootlocker but no root. I can not remember if OTA would wipe my apps and data, am guessing no as bootlocker already unlocked?
Some expert advice would come in handy. You know what an expert is yeah? X is an unknown quantity and a spurt is a drip under pressure.
Hmm, what to do. Nexus wizards, please advise. I have started downloading the 4.2.1 factory image anyways but I would still like to know what would be recommended in the situation I was in. I am fairly new, though I have learned to flash stock roms with adb, and have stuck with stock roms for the moment while I get the hang of things. Not sure if I get updates from google now or from Samsung. Am guessing google, but then why would google not offer to update me to 4.2.1 seeing as it is now out rather than to 4.2?

When this gentleman says "Its for 4.2.1" I am guessing that he is saying the update which reads
"This software will upgrade your Galaxy Nexus to Android 4.2 Jellybean..." is actually the 4.2 to 4.2.1 OTA update, just not marked properly?
I just love it when things are marked incorrectly, makes life so much less confusing? They should always do that to keep me in a continuous state of bewliderment. New google policy, mark every file with the name of the file which preceeds it, except on Sundays, when they should be marked in any manner whatsoever.
Thanks for the answer bloke. You are the bees knees. I did kind of have an inkling that it might be 4.2.1. Crazy boyz and girlz. Just mad. Somewhere between irrational, nearly right, not correct, and just plain silly.
i'm running 4.1.
and since a few days ago, my nexus is saying the update is ready and i should update.. i guess it's 4.2?
anyway, last time i updated like this, i lost my root..
so what's the easiest way to accept this system update but still keep my root?
The easiest way is just to flash a rooted stock 4.2 ROM. I don't know why people are so dependent on OTA when they're XDA members...

Install an ap called "OTA rootkeeper" by Voodoo, run it and give it root permissions.
Then it'll do what it says (I last used it on a GN about the 4.0.1 update, should still work though).
I tried this process earlier today, i mean, JOP40C -> JOP40D through OTA, worked fine..
Rooted it in like 1 min. Still got the stock recovery on too. To an unlocked user, i don't see the point of protecting root with app X or Y.

Make sure you have a unlocked bootloader, the rest is non-issue.....

this..
agree with others just flash a rom which is 4.2 there are a few in the developers section which are pure 4.2 or look at rasbeanjelly which is pure 4.2 with a few nice tweaks.
The custom roms are often ahead of the google ones they had the date fixed in the contacts app before google pushed a fix
