if i update to jellybean from ics, will i lose all my apps and data such as mp3s?
i'm on an official/clean ics (yakju)... and want to update to official/clean jellybean...
can someone please guide me/direct me to step-by-step instruction??

The JB ROMS that are out you do need to wipe/factory reset but you can backup all of your apps, etc using something like Titanium Backup or My Backup. Some launchers backup your screens as well. Just make sure you do not restore data.
Note: Since you are asking this here I'm thinking you are already or will be rooted and don't want to wait for the OTA. Whenever that may be.

They gave away Galaxy Nexuses to developers at Google I/O. These specific models got a "preview" release of 4.1 Jellybean OTA'd to them to use before it comes out officially. This is not an official or final build until the images and source are posted. They indicated "mid July" as the timeframe for 4.1 OTA's to the GSM Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S, and Motorola Xoom.

If all you've done is rooted, then you'll get to take the OTA just fine. If you've changed fonts, system apps, applied a custom recovery, etc... you can't take the OTA. Use an app like "OTA root keeper" to save your root from being removed when the update applies.
You won't lose data, apps, or anything like that. It just updates the OS...

Once rooted, why wait for OTA, go and get custom ROMS and if you are looking to get Jellybean, it is available in the respective forums (GSM/CDMA). It is not "official" but nevertheless, it works. You will have to wipe your data and cache but you can save all your apps by using titanium back up or other such apps and restore them once you get the rom. I have been using it for two days and have found it to be snappier than ICS and Google Now and the new notifications are awesome. The only problem I have encountered is the GPS which takes long time to get a fix and is quite inaccurate lot of times. So if you can deal with that, take the plunge otherwise wait for the "official" build.
The GPS issue has been reported to be caused by the new maps update. I tried using the maps in the browser and it worked, dont know what to think of it.

You cannot apply the OTA then. It won't work. You'll have to either install a custom ROM (if that's your thing), or flash back to stock 4.0.4 and wait for the official OTA or update images.
If it took you hours to do the first time, you did something wrong, sorry. Its extremely easy to unlock, root, and flash the Galaxy Nexus.

Seriously? Unlocking and rooting a GN is about the easiest phone I've ever done. It does not take hours and hours. I suggest you read up. Once you unlocked and rooted you don't have to do it again.

Your music, pictures, and apps saved on Titanium/Rom Toolbox will be saved.
So really U've got nothing to lose as long as u back ur apps in titanium or Rom Toolbox.
Them after u back up, hit wipe user data and flash the Rom and done.
Then turn it back on and then open titanium or Rom toolbox and hit restore.
Then just customize and it'll seem like nothing has happened to ur user data.

I have a file that doesn't require a wipe.
Soooooo yeah. It's not needed if u got the correct file. And don't nag at me "oh but u get issues!!! And blah blah blah."
Guess what it works perfectly fine every time.
EDIT1: I'm not gonna sharing it if anyone asks. It's made specifically for me.

Ok so I'm currently on Gingerbread 2.3.6. My phone is rooted. I AM NOT USING ANY SORT OF ROM. I am on the stock T-mobile rom.
The only programs I have installed on it are Titanium backup. I have performed a backup using nandroid as well as TB.
My question to you all is: Is it safe to update to the OFFICIAL ICS when T-Mo rolls out with it on June 11th?
If so, do I have to unroot? Or can I just run the update when I hook up my phone and open KIES?

If you're running the stock ROM, you should be able to update without issue. You will almost certainly lose root, though. I'm hoping it only takes a day or so for someone to bang out a rooted, deodexed, etc. stock ICS ROM once the update is released.

You may need to flash the stock recovery via odin if you have CWM installed to update to ics

Install that lastest update b4 u update to ics. The update b4 ics is to prevent your phone from bricking when going thru the update process to ics.

It is okay to be rooted, but what Mr Knitty is asking is are you on the UVLDE build of gingerbread or the KL1? You need to be on the newer, updated UVLDE.

Ok I just checked my phone settings , I am on:
Gingerbread.UVKL1
and the kernal version is 2.6.35.11
and the baseband version is:
t989UVKL1
So what can I do now?

Install kies on the pc, plug your phone in, and accept the update. Im not positive, but i think you need to be on stock recovery too.

I tried connecting my phone to Kies after rooting and it says that a firmware update isn't supported on my device. In order for me to do anything in that regard, I'd have to unroot and then upgrade. If I were you, I'd just wait until Tmo pushes out the ICS update and when someone puts the rooted version out just install it. It will save you the trouble of having to unroot and root again just to get what your phone is already capable of getting via root.
Is there a thread for upgrading from a modded rom, like Juggernaut? Searched, but then again my eyes aren't the greatest. If I need the UVLDE update, how would I go about not bricking during such process? Sorry to intrude, just thought this was the closest thread to ask.

Theres a thread dedicated specifically to flashing the update. That thread covers every possible scenario. Look for the words flash, UVLDE, how to, and update in the titile. Its plain as day.
I think I got answer on my question in here.....
I didn't have to change back to stock recovery to update or unroot.
If on stock just flash the root file again through Odin and your good to go.
If your on a custom GB ROM. Just flash through Odin instead of Kies. Here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1682955

If coming from a leaked custom ICS ROM. I would use the super wipe and cache wipe. Then flash through Odin.
Of course back up everything with your preferred method.

My phone its rooted just stock just to be able to use good apps like titanium addfree etc etc and when i update laat week did not gave me a problem so im thinking if u have stock rom just rooted i dont see a problem plus everyone here at xda wont let u down...trust me
What I would do, is just wait like 2 or 3 more days so someone can come out with a completely stock ICS. That way you don't have to worry about losing root

So I downloaded it and the phone reboot, when the phone starts it goes to the cwm recovery screen saying the update failed. I would like to have some HELP, I found other threads, but I really don't want to do anything worng.

DO i need to get ICS back to update the phone?
How should i do it?

The issue at hand here is that you have a custom recovery. I can't say that if you remove CWM that you'll be able to OTA update, but that's at least what was the problem there. Now, if you want to keep all your apps and update to the OTA jelly bean instead of the Google I/O preview build, you can flash this here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1737849
Follow the instructions on that post to update. This is what I did and it worked perfectly.
Camera not working after JB update!
Hi! I recently installed JB on my Dad's Galaxy Nexus, whilst everything seems to work fine, I've noticed that the camera has stopped working. The screen goes blank if i access the camera. I've tried installing 3rd party applications for camera, but none of them work! Please help me! Is it a hardware or a software fault?

But going to factory reset will not remove the cwm recovery... right? If i go to factory data reset on my phone ( remember i am using a 4.1 rom) will it go back to ics and delete all roms / root? Cause this sounds like the best way to do it, but you were the first one that said that. Bought my phone from Amazon unlocked ( do you guys think it is gonna update?)

You said you downloaded your ROM from here, but you didn't say which one. There was at least one (Koush's) that was an image of the stock ROM, taken from the OTA update that went out to the phones given out at Google I/O. If you have that ROM (and the corresponding radio), you can just use CWM to install the OTA update. I know this works because I did it myself.
If you really have one of the custom ROMs, your only choice is to return to stock if you want the official OTA. And yes, this will remove CWM and wipe your entire phone (including anything in /sdcard)... so backup anything you want to keep before you try this. Sorry man, I know i am not giving a lot of information, but that's cause i really don't know. I did a random "how to update your galaxy nexus to 4.1" tutorial, and i don't even remember where...... I just know the links i download were from here.
So what i am going to do:
1: Factory data reset
2: I think it's going back to ICS
3: Just do the normal system update that should just pop up.
My only fear is if the phone does not ask for update.
If you restore to stock using efrant's guide, it will be ICS since Google has not yet posted Jelly Bean firmware images. If you don't get the OTA notification or don't want to wait for it, you can just download and apply it manually (see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1419170)

No, that will just wipe data. You'll have a clean phone, but with the same ROM you currently have. The phone doesn't keep a copy of the stock firmware hidden away or anything like that. Efrant's guide is the proper way to restore everything back to stock.
I have Galaxy Nexus, I was prompted to Install the Jelly Bean upgrade, but I don't want to.
I know there is a work around to have Flash working, but I don't want to part with Flash and its officla updates just yet. I don't see much gain on Jelly Bean at this moment. If I decide not to upgrade now, will I be able in the future? Will I be prompted again? I don't want to root my device.

Keep denying it. Although you make absolutely no sense as to why you wouldn't want Jb. You can install flash and use it just the same. Also since you are upgrading its not going to magically disappear from your phone.

I don't know if that is different between different carriers, phones, or OS levels, but there was a Gingerbread update on my other phone that is no longer available OTA. So it's possible, I guess, that eventually you may not be able to get it at all.

Actually, I just remembered that if you flash a custom Recovery that's one way of ensuring you won't be upgraded to JB automatically as that process requires a stock recovery.

Project butter... I still love my iPhone, but I honestly believe my jelly beans running gnex is smoother. Project butter is amazing.

Flash will remain on your phone if you already have it. Speaking of Flash, the last update on my PC for Firefox hosed my machine and I had to go back a few versions. Sometimes no updates is a good thing.

I'd say go with JB. I only really had ICS the first hour I had the phone (Although I used ICS on my work cell).
As others said, if you already have flash installed, you'll continue to have it. There is absolutely no excuse not to upgrade to jellybean.

Take a look in the android dev sections to this forum. If you ever update once rooted, you should be flashing a new ROM (clean or dirty flashing) to receive the next update. Running stock ROM in between a Sammy update and while having the older ROM without the newest update will yield that result.

There are plenty of reasons for rooting but remaining stock (such as: tethering, Droid wall, Titanium Backup to allow me to backup and restore app data, removing bloat, etc).
I have flashed custom rooms in the past on my Evo but right now I am happy with my S3 at stock.

I was in the same boat at you. I put it off for a while but finally decided to update tonight. I followed the steps posted here.
You can update your baseband by flashing a properly packaged official baseband zip, or flash from recovery tool (my preference), like the one here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29820376. There are also unofficial, or leaked basebands, available to flash from all-in-one zips, such as the one here: http://goo.im/devs/freeza/Galaxy-S-fre3-LIGFirmwareModemAIO.zip.
As far as the build version goes, that does not have to match your baseband (modem). Most of the ICS ROMs are LG8, although there are some LI3 ICS ROMs to choose from. There's also a leaked build of Jellybean, builds LIF & LIG, with a third leak LIH reportedly coming out tomorrow. Once rooted, you can update your build version by flashing the ROM of your choice, based upon the build of your choice.

Edit: Once you're rooted, you'll still receive OTA update notifications, which will continually annoy you until you choose to update and reboot. Once you reboot, the update will fail because of your custom recovery (you will NOT lose root) and the notification will go away....until the next OTA...

Excuse me for my stupidity but I'm new to android. I'm also using the sprint variant of the s3 and have it rooted with stock rom. However my build number is IMM76D.L710VPALF9. I'm assuming the last 3 are the update versions. What is the current version and how do I update to it?
Also, I'm rooted with Clockwork mod 5.5.0.4. How do I upgrade this to version 6.0.1.2? Will I have to unroot then root again?

You can flash a new recovery using ODIN, or Mobile ODIN. I use Mobile ODIN. There's a thread on recoveries here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31894089

That is one of the reasons that I am rooted... so I can use WiFi Tether. I do not it much. Hardly any data at all. But when I am in a spot and need a wireless connection and I only have my phone it comes in handy.
Some other reasons:
- DroidWall: Lets me block individual apps from accessing the internet.
- AddFree: Block ads in some apps.

I just recently got my gs3 and have already rooted it.
I am still running stock rom with the latest update. I have use titanium backup to freeze a few apps but other than that I havent done much.
I just heard from a friend that the gs3 are recieving their 4.1 official jellybean update soon. If i am on Stock and Rooted with a few apps frozen, is it possible for me to get the ota update. If it isnt possible please say. If it is possible but there are some drawback like unroot or lost apps, please mention that aswell. Also if there is a possibility of flashing the updated 4.1 stock rom directly to my phone using cwm, please let me know. Thanks For the help!
I would unfreeze everything before trying to update (there's Batch defrost in TiBu,i think). As for root, have to wait until someone figures it out for 4.1, just like any new version.

Thanks for the reply but I wanted a more detailed answer
You should be able to get the update, just unfreeze everything. I received an update on an older device when it was rooted. But, because it was a newer version of Android it didn't root in the same manner as before.
I've made versions of the last two OTAs that can be installed through CWM without losing root and I'm confident I or someone else will do the same shortly after the JB OTA is released. I'm also confident full versions of the ROM installable through CWM will be available shortly thereafter.
I wouldn't worry about rooting LH9 or freezing apps, or even installing a custom ROM. Worse case you have to wait a few days to install JB.

do you know if the official JB update has come to Rogers in Canada?

The easiest way to apply it is to download all the files in the PIECES section and flash them all in recovery before you reboot. Make sure you flash the kernel after the ROM. If you do it that way, you don't need to worry about getting to unmodified LG1 first.
