Hum, I think that MHL is a different kind of cable, in concept it is the same input output, but the middle conversor I dont know.
I prefer not to try at that price until I know for sure
Is this not all that is needed

I doubt that'll work as it's not an MHL connector, which I understand is HDMI and USB combined, but if it somehow does... bargain!
Lol now i look properly its not going to work at all
imo very stupid not to use standard HDMI mini port... now we have to buy adapters and ****.. and the phone won't charge if you don't have special adapter.. epic fail imo.. anyway they should include adapters with the phone.
I agree, they should include the required cables and adapters in the box, other manufacturers like Nokia do with their flagship handsets.
I think MHL will ultimately be better than mini HDMI port though, since its looking very likely to become the next standard connection.
I'm hoping to get one of the MHL cable/adapters from the MHL consortium for my Clove Blog review, if I do then I will post up a youTube video for everyone. At the present time the consortium PR person is trying to procure one for me, but it seems likely its inordinately difficult, so remains to be seen whether I will have it in time for the review.
In the very least, you'd expect them to have manufactured and released the accessories by the time the actual phone is released.

due to my low post count i cant post this as a link.
have spotted this adaptor for the HTC Flyer, says will be in stock 16/5
I assume this would work guess a little more research needed 1st.
Here you go... It's supposedly the official Samsung Galaxy S II MHL adaptor.

First stock due mid-June just saying.
Can someone confirm for me that this is the same cable. They call it an Ethernet Micro-HDMI (Type D).
Edit: Monoprice[)0Tcom has them for like 5 bucks. I can give the link so you can see the cable once I get some more posts in here.
I'm not worried about the Ethernet part, it should not get in the way because the extra connections for it are female.
Also, there is a lot of great info on these forums. Look forward to sticking around and modding some phones in the future.
Edit 2: So when searching for the Samsung cable by Goog'ling the phone, they call it either "microUSB" or "HML port"
That site has two different types that they call: Mini-HDMI (Type C) and Micro-HDMI (Type D) the type C looks like the usual Samsung cable connection, I was just wondering if there is some different way they wired the Samsung cables so that we had to use those ones. I cannot see them doing that though since there are many devices switching to the same cable as well.
The trick is that standard HDMI so far does not include a link for power. The Samsung MHL adapter has a microUSB plug that connects into the phone and a microUSB jack to connect your charger, and the mini-HDMI jack to hook up to the TV so the device gets charged while playing back. In a future specification update, HDMI will probably be amended to include a power link.
Some info here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtwTcnR0hqA
Clove told me that the MHL cables from different manufacturers will be compatible which is useful to know. I guess they all conform to the standard

" Also if your television supports MHL enabled HDMI connections, then you can charge your HTC Sensation when connected and control the Sensation using the television remote (MHL enabled televisions expected late 2011)"

Thats only true if you TV is MHL capable (hint: nobodies is yet).
i dont understand how the phone has is out but the cables are not? how do they know it works if theres no cables lol
Has anyone purchased or researched this yet?
I know that a regular HDMI 25' cable is about $15
http://www.abacus24-7.com/singleProduct.aspx?pid=14762&gclid=CKPRhcrQ4KgCFQzNKgodR39sCQ
But i need the mini HDMI to HDMI
I see ton's of them that are 6', but i want to use in my living room..
Anyone?
Monoprice has a 15' cable for $5.24.

This is about as long as I have found. You may have to use an extension cable for anything beyond 15'.
A 25' extension cable on Monoprice is $20.

Use a standard HDMI long cable and a mini to standard HDMI adapter. Amazon and pretty much everyone else seems to carry the adapters for reasonable prices.

Duh! That's a good idea
Don't know why i didn't think about adapter
Another option (if you got the 3.1 update...) is to use a bluetooth mouse. I do that when I hook my laptop up to the TV. a 15' cable across the living room will definitely aggravate the wife...
One other thought. Is the HDMI out on the Xoom micro or mini? Check on that before buying anything.
micro. I have the 10 foot cable from Monoprice and it works fine
I have the 15' cable from Monoprice and it works fine.
I would be leary of adapters on the Xoom side as that will put added strain on the XOOM connector.
I like the idea of the BT mouse/keyboard. That will solve needing a long HDMI cable. Now I need to buy a short cable as well - gee thanks!
I bought this 50' cable:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000QKKAPE
and this adapter:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00481C4RO
Both work great.
I may have to pick up that adapter. Since it has a short cable that will reduce any strain on the Xoom connector.
Thanks!
On second thought, $13 for that adapter is a bit too much. Monoprice has it for $3.
http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10419&cs_id=1041913&p_id=7603&seq=1&format=2
I'm not trying to push Monoprice, but they do have really good prices and everything I have ordered has worked great and shown up very quickly.
i have the 15' from monoproce and it worls great payed only about 10 bucks
I have the 15ft hdmi as well works great also got 2 15ft micro usb. Didn't spend that much at all compared to other shops.
Monoprice is awesome for cables.
I went with a $4 adapter from China and my xbox HDMI cable yeah I'm cheapo! and a BT keyboard with "integrated joystick-mouse thingy" I had, works nicely.
I posted in another thread about cables compatible with the SG2 and ended up answering my own question when I found one in my box of cables.
See attached for photos if you want to be sure.
Part number 5457 (USB to SG2 connector) is the cable that I have and can confirm that the micro-B type from Monoprice is the same as used on the SG2.
I have a thread on USB OTG cables, already some around that are very cheap and work
be very interested to hear about the other cable there though!
Yeah, the hdmi cable seems to be the one people are looking/waiting for.
I will update the OP once it gets in. If this thread gets buried to far by then, I can send you a pm instead of bumping the thread if you like.
That'd be great, although I expect lots of others will appreciate the bump if it is to confirm they work!

exactly...
Meh, they don't ship to Italy S:
Looking at what they say further they are talking about it connecting a Droid X to your television, and the close up shots of the micro-end of this cable do not resemble a micro USB particularly. I think these won't work.
dude, there is no HDMI, micro HDMI or MICRO USB to HDMI port on this phone, its MHL, dont waste your money on that cable.
Your posted HDMI cable will NOT work as it is micros-HDMI to HDMI and not MicroUSB to HDMI as needed on the SDS2.
The cables were cheap enough that I just ordered a few different ones to try out and see if they worked. With all the gadgets I end up buying, the ones that do not work with the phone will come in handy eventually for something else anyway.
Since there is more interest, I will bump the thread once I find out if the other cables I bought work fro the HDMI.
I got my cables in and can confirm that both the micro and mini HDMI cables are not the same end as the Samsung (micro-usb).
I did contact them, and they stated they are working on making a micro-usb to HDMI cable. There is no eta on availability however. I can let you know when I see them in stock if you like because the prices on these cables are pretty high elsewhere right now and will wait until some cheaper ones are released.
Does no1 else see the need in someone producing a 1male -2female splitter for our phone considering we do not have a seperate hdmi connection. It would be great to use the otg cable along with hdmi. So we can use keyboard and mouse hookup to the tv etc.... Ive looked all over the internet for one and have not come across one yet. So if anyone is capable of making one i will be your first customer. lol
if you notice, on those MHL to HDMI connectors, they all provide a spare microUSB port in the adapter, so that you can continue to hook up more stuff to your phone, and charger your phone
the spare port is for a micro USB power input. the video out display will not work if it isnt plugged in, at least mine won't. Bluetooth controller maybe?
thanks for the replies
I guess i will have either pay someone to make one or wait to see if there will be a demand for it. Thanks again for the replies
so, anyone taken apart an MHL adapter yet?
i have a sneaking suspicion, that the move to an 11 pin is what will allow BOTH OTG, and MHL at the same time, but i could be wrong.
look inside your USB port on the bottom of the S3...
whatya see?
the normal 5 pins on the USB part.. but what is that in back wall? THE OTHER 6 PINS!
yep, that is why you cannot plug the MHL adapter into a hub or anything.. there is 6 pins are missing.
Now, i am wondering:
has anyone taken it apart to see if the 6 pins are used alone, or if it uses the the USB also?
if it uses only the 6 pins for MHL-ness, then it should more than possible to make an OTG/MHL adapter/dock.
more thought says, if my theory is right, an 11 pin to 5 pin conveter may be the key.. and an otg can be spliced in to give 2 outputs: MHL in one (using an s2 MHL adapter) and OTG in the other.....
anyone wanna tear their adapter up? or are you guys gonna make me spend some money?
I ran across this post looking to see if anyone has done this yet. I am going to try to grab the 5 to 11 tomorrow and tear it apart (since it's the cheaper adapter). My plan was to rip it apart and if the original 5 pins are available, splice just as you mentioned.
I can't find a decent picture of the microUSB plug to see if all pins are there.
Also I found this:
http://homixtech.en.alibaba.com/pro...Galaxy_S3_11pin_To_Micro_USB_5pin_Gender.html
Which makes me think 11 pin microUSB plugs that work are available out there somewhere.

So, did you do this experiment? Has anybody found a way to get access to all of the pins and make OTG work with MHL?
I've been waiting for two months for an answer about this. I'm glad someone started a thread. I kind of have this hesitation to start new threads.
I would love it if this could be integrated with the seidio active dock.

Thanks bro!, Ive been searching for the answer to this awhile as well.. I wonder not many people have brought this up. Ideally I would love to use my S3 as a "PC".

meh, I think that is wrong. many people have done exactly what it says you can do, and it doesn't work.
Makes me wonder if the boys at Samsung made a press mistake. If indeed you can't use both with the correct cable, then why make a port with 11 pins? Seems a waste of resources to me.

I have never seen anything from samsung saying that MHL and OTG was possible.. just speculation in websites.
It better be possible because if not all Samsung's managed to do is make us buy hugely overpriced new MHL cables when they could have kept the old type, but I guess Samsung's made some decent money giving people no option but to buy £30 MHL cables.
I hope Monoprice really is working on a cable. 35-40 USD is more than I want to pay, especially if I get a couple and/or an HDMI dock.

Someone needs to find the resistor values first so the phone can use both simultaneously if it's even possible that is.

that would be key. I have sent out messages to people that may know, or may be able to find out, but i have not had success.
heck, If it can be done in the terminal (turning on items) i can make a shortcut that would do it.. but i have had no success with that either.
It's not possible I think.
You can use an MHL enabled tv wich powers MHL, (so you don't need the adapter) but how do you want to split that?
You can split the cables from the samsung adapter, so you have the MHL ones(6) and the usb ones(5).
But what then?
You need to connect the MHL ones to an hdmi cable, and connect it with an MHL enabled tv. And the usb ones to an usb port for OTG.
But will that even work with this S3?, because it is designed to get power from your charger via the extra usb port on the adapter.
Maybe it only works with the adapter, and not even with an MHl enabled tv...
I think somebody needs to connect the S3 to an MHL enabled tv, if that works you can modify the adapter and use the usb as OTG.

I found (and shared) the MHL value, and we already know the OTG value.. but it only seems logical there is ANOTHER value to activate both at the same time. we are postulating, the the reasoning behind the 11 pin, is to allow both. If adding just an OTG cable turned on MHL too, it would cause issues without an MHL connection. and the same with MHL activating OTG, without an OTG device connected. like i said, this is postulation at the moment, but there SHOULD be a thrid value to enable both at the same time. that value would be used by a future peice of hardware that does a whole "PC MODE".
and if it does not exist, it CAN be done, we just need more "stuff" a way to enable a special switch if you will.
some people are saying you can connect straight to an MHL enabled TV, but that has not been done yet (and since there are no 11 pin MHL cables, that are not adapters, it seem unlikell that anyone will until said cable exists. the S3 cannot send MHL signal over the usb part, it has to be either the extra 6 pins, or with the 11 to 5 pin adapter.)
essentially, the pins are there, and with some special software, or a hidden resistor value as to yet, unfound, and some custom hardware (as of now NOTHING 11 pin, has 11 pins in it) it SHOULD be possible.
but there is nothing that has been found (hardware wise) that is even modifyable to work.... yet.
What I don't understand, why does MHL only work with the power connected?
They could easily make an MHL cable with the 11 pin, and hdmi. That should work for only MHL.
Only no go I can think is that MHL drains your battery because of always having your screen on, and the MHL output.
So they decided to use the adapter with power, otherwise you can't use MHL feature very long before your battery is empty
I think inside the adapter they only use the pins for giving power, and not the full 5 pin support for OTG, and therefore OTG doesn't work when you want to connect something.
Inside the ROM they have maybe build in something that MHL will only work when power is connected.
Maybe the solution is very simple, modify the adapter so full 5 pins are connected.
