Hello.
I am looking for some help in the coming months with this phone. The phone when released will have gingerbread. I am looking to get either ICS or jellybean on the phone.
Problem is republic wireless uses hybrid calling technology which means it switches over to WiFi when available. RW probably uses files baked into their custom ROM, which is basically cm with clockwork mod, and I need to extract them in hopes of merging them with an ICS or jellybean ROM for this.
Anyone up for this?

ICS will allow you to use VOIP calls automatically whenever you are connected to the wifi. You just need to fill in the user-pass and sip server address (check the dialer settings). There is no need to install anything.
Republic wireless has an app that seems to handle the WiFi cell handoff and and their own kernel and such. I won't know the exact changes until I get a system dump of the phone.

Thank for your interest in doing this, biggiephat. I hope to be in the next Wave with Republic sometime in August. I'm just a flasher coming from an HTC Incredible. I thought I would try this pay-as-you-go smartphone plan.
I will be posting my experiences to alert other posters to the good, bad and the ugly.
I already have republic wireless its just the optimus s that it came with is horrible. Service is good as far as I can tell

Hey Biggiephat! Glad you're interested in this too! I posted a similar (if not TLDR) post on the CM forums earlier today. Many of the apks and background apps from CM7 had to be modded in order for the RW version to work. The same will be true for us. What makes this more challenging, however, is that ICS/JB is an entirely 'new' system from Gingerbread and prior (most of those were incremental updates)... so it will not be as simple as dumping, copying, praying. This will take some serious effort--but I for one am down for partaking. and I love that this phone can receive calls underwater--bwaahaha!
Let's do this!

Woo! Even so, just to dump the system img and debloat this thing would be my first task. Then move on to compiling an ICS or jb aosp ROM. I'm asking for help because I want to get into the ROM game and I think with some help it could be a great experience. I am a software engineer so I hopefully can pick up on this stuff very easily.
You have the link to that CM post? Interested in reading that on my lunch break today.

Our device unfortunately is XT557, not 535, so it will not be that simple for us. Plus RW has not released the SPC or info on the calculation of it.
Just got Defy XT 557
I just got my Defy XT 557 from republic and I would also be interested in helping get a new rom built for ics.

Been out since about last Thursday, actually.
Hi, has anyone tested this on a Rogers phone? Someone confirmed that the 'LH2 version works with rogers (in another thread) but I just wanted to double check if this is the same ROM. Also do I need to do anything else to get it working on the Rogers network besides add the APN settings (modem files, etc)?
I'm doing this update for my dad's phone primarily to fix the data usage bug in the official GB rom and it would be nice to get him updated to ICS.

It will work on a Rogers device, but do keep in mind that the official LH2 build has many of the same problems as the leak, as well as one or two extras since it apparently doesn't do a full wipe first. Two major ones present in both ICS builds are a broken keyboard backlight and broken tethering, though there are fairly easy fixes here on the forums for both. The official build has problems with the phone app crashing if you have contacts on the phone other than google contacts, I believe.
Your best bet is to back up anything he has on the phone, convert all the contacts over to google contacts if he uses anything else, and do a factory wipe before updating. If he cares about tethering or the keyboard lights, you'll need to flash clockwork mod recovery after the update, and flash those two updates as well.

Awesome! Thanks for all the info. Yeah, I was reading about those issues and I was shocked that AT&T and/or Samsung would allow such major bugs through (especially the keyboard light bug). I wonder if people are complaining about these issues on the official AT&T forums. I'm just glad the XDA community is here to help
Is it safe to assume that AT&T didn't mess with the built-in ICS data usage tool?

Since no-one's outright said it: this update DOES NOT wipe /data. You will keep your apps and settings.
At least, if you're coming from UCLG9. Don't know about GB builds. Honestly, I don't think Odin is smart enough for something like that, but I'm no expert.

Because for some reason they think an att build would work better then a bell or Rogers one. When in reality its the same device minus the baseband and buildprop.

Are some of the at&t wifi hotspots only open to at&t users? If so I imagine that wouldn't work on a different carrier's leak (unless the certs or whatever were copied).
Whenever I ran a Canadian leak based ROM on my Skyrocket, things like Google search would default to Google.ca, which was annoying. I probably could've fixed that but never got around to it.

Yes you're correct, that issue is easily fixable. A free app from the Play Store called MoreLocale 2 would have fixed that issue in 5 seconds.

Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda app-developers app
Until someone has posted a working rom in our Sprint Development page I would strongly recommend not flashing anything cloned from another OG version. Xbox is working tirelessly under very stressful conditions(St. Louis) to give us a CM version of JB. The biggest hindrance is that are phone is different from the other OG. Actually, all the OG are different from each other from one aspect to another. We all share the same CPU. So booting isn't an issue. But, after that it really is difficult to get each thing to work. The Sprint version uses its own CDMA which is not the same as what they use in Korea. At&t has its own camera, the Japanese version is waterproof(seriously), the Canadian version wishes it was an American.
If you flash any of these roms(unless triple confirmed it is safe) you can really jack stuff up. You need to not only back up your phone but I would back up your partitions.
My strongest recommendation if you are merely a hobby flasher is to wait. I know it has been a tough long road but the finish line is in sight. We will have source for our phone(LS970) in a month. We will have the OTA in a month. If you flash anything Korean be prepared to face the consequences if things don't go well.
So, what are we waiting on? The simple and most honest answer is LG. Send them an email, blast them on twitter, blast Sprint to have them blast LG, call the development department, email multiple sources, write a letter to the Android sites online. Maybe they could write a story about it. If you put their feet to the fire they will have to say something. But, be kind and sane in your approach. The problem of getting our phone updated is not because of lack of development. We have some great guys.

I think if the differences between the Nexus 4 and the Optimus G were really as minimal as they seem than it wouldn't have been such a nightmare for the devs to bring AOSP to this phone in the first place. Still, I'm being optimistic.

It will be a while before the hardware on this phone gets outgrown. That's one of the reasons I originally bought this phone instead of the S3 when it was released....because I knew THAT phone's hardware would eventually be outgrown by software updates. But I know as long as the Nexus 4 is able to handle software upgrades, we will too. And we all know the Nexus devices are first in line with the software upgrades.

I'm brand new to the whole development aspect of Android and have never really peaked at the code so please excuse my ignorance on the topic, but why is GSM to CDMA so hard?
I would think the OS would be built in a way that it utilizes drivers/modules to offload a lot of that dirty work. So it would be something like:
(quick pseudo code so don't get nitpicky.. just trying to get the idea across)
Code:
network = new NetworkDriver('LGOG_CDMA'); //swap out CDMA for GSM drivers, etc..
network.init();
network.sendPacket(your_data_stuff);
and then it would be a matter of then at least trying and hacking the drivers from 4.2, assuming system calls don't change drastically with every minor release wouldn't this work?

I can't speak on specifics, but we had a N4 Conversion Rom for 4.2.2 and it quickly became known to brick certain phones. It was discouraged to use it.

Hey ladies and gents!
I have ported a rom from our brother, d2vzw. I did some stuff so when you install this instead of downloading from d2vzw forum on this sight, your phone wont go into a boot loop or anally rape you. I really didn't need to do much work, since the hardware is identical.
1) since this from a Verizon device, will I lose service?
Probably not. I typed this topic on the cm10.2 build, and I can call and text.
2) is there focal included?
Yes!!
3) what should I do in case of errors?
Backup....duhh.
Finally, I'm not responsible for anything that you do. If you do anything that loses data, boot loop, or anything that you find an inconvience, well I'm not responsible, and you got yourself a beautiful paperweight.
And if you run into any issues/bugs let me know. I'll be happy to redirect you to the Verizon forums. I ported this. All credit and development go to damnyouwaffles and the fine folks at the Verizon forum.

One thing to keep in mind when going from 4.1.2/4.2.2 to 4.3 - you won't be able to restore backups (ie. Titanium) after the upgrade due to changes in the file structure in the new version. This goes for both apps and their associated data.
However, you should be able to restore your apps at least when you run through the setup process and download them from Google (as long as you are keeping your phone synced up to your account that is).
Same goes for trying to restore apps taken on 4.3 to an older version.
Just something I thought I'd pass along.
Sent from my SPH-L710
Hey guys, sorry about the inconvience, but I never edited the build.prop to say that your phone is still a sprint s3. Here's the link for the updated build.prop

Once downloaded you must replace the current build.prop in /system

Here's a source build for the d2spr, it was within the 10.1 thread but didn't warrant it's own separate thread as it's still early for it's own thread for anyone interested. Built today.
uh you guys, you can build actual d2spr build from sources.
You are totally correct. Titanium backup and related apps will work a lot differently when the appropriate updates come.
NOTE TO USERS WHO INSTALL THIS ROM. WHEN YOU INSTALL GOOGLE APPS FOR ANDROID 4.3, SOME APS WILL FC FREQUENTLY. THE FIX AROUND THIS IS TO UNINSTALL AND REINSTALL THE APPS.

DUDE - I DID read. I just wanted an update since a few hours ago to see how this specific rom was running. I can't stand people that just tell others to "read." You must assume that everyone but you is an idiot and I am sorry to disappoint you. I guess people like me completely ruin your day. Such a shame. I will be sure not to disappoint you in the future. Maybe you didn't realize that the person only two posts above yours mentioned the fix for lost root without even a link. Maybe I am not the one who needs to do the reading.
And...I am NOT a NOOB - I have been a member longer than YOU. Have a nice day!
So...I got a PM from a newer user who can't post yet but he wanted to make sure that I knew what to do to ensure flashing this Rom will be effective. Here is what he said:
"Apparently I can't post in the developer forums until I've made 10 posts, but I registered just so I could answer your question. Installing the rom and allowing it to boot, then installing gapps wouldn't let me use wifi either. In order to get 10.2 to work correctly I had to flash the rom, 4.3 gapps, and SuperSU all at the same time in one recovery boot session."
So if you plan on giving this Rom a run, give that a shot for the best results. Glad I got my answer.
did you try the root fix? maybe even have a link? can i use any su flashable zip?
thanks in advance
