Baseband without root

Can you flash a different baseband without rooting or unlocking the bootloader?
I'm looking to flash the older -36 baseband to replace the -56 one include with the stock rom.
Managed to answer some of the questions so just this one remains.
I'd like to know this as well, as it seems the old .36 baseband seems to have better signal and less battery drain.

Using -36 baseband on r800at prevents battery charging

I have an r800at running the Ancestor LE rom. When I flash the -36 baseband found and described in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1469473, my battery no longer charges. In the phone's info the baseband does show up at -36 but the battery refuses to charge. Everything else including the network works though. Its the same for whether or not I installed the Play baseband libs or not. Does anyone know the problem? Any help would be appreciated.
Damn, I wouldn't expect that!
Try to backup your current rom, reflash a brand new one and then -36 baseband with libs and check if the charging works.
But besides I'm not sure if flashing -36 baseband is a good idea if you do this on "at" version.

Yea I was a bit surprised that no one else had my problem. I've tried fresh installs where I've wiped everything and used it with a different ROM as well, Xperia Play NXT to be exact. The results are the same so I'm just wondering if there's something I can do. Would be nice to have the better battery life and better signal that I've been hearing a lot about .

How did you manage to get -36 and NXT to work? I've been trying all orders of installation I can come up with.
.58 firmware
doomkernel
baseband
NXT (bootloop at installation of new lockscreen+settings)
.58 firmware
doomkernel
NXT
baseband (new lockscreen+settings are lost)
.58 firmware
baseband
doomkernel (all these three without ever starting phone)
NXT (bootloop at installation of new lockscreen+settings)
Edit: I finally managed to fix it. The trick was to first install -36 baseband ftf and then install .58 with "exclude baseband" checked. In all my other tries I installed .58 first and then baseband tft in later, but for some reason the baseband ftf deleted the userdata partition (CWM complained about this). But by installing .58 after baseband it reinstalled the userdata partition.

Not a clue, try reflashing your ROM and starting again, never seen such issues caused by rooting.

Is your IMEI something starts with 0049 now?
If yes, your stock rom has the old modem. You need to flash newer stock rom from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1896696
