Baseband without root - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can you flash a different baseband without rooting or unlocking the bootloader?
I'm looking to flash the older -36 baseband to replace the -56 one include with the stock rom.

Managed to answer some of the questions so just this one remains.

I'd like to know this as well, as it seems the old .36 baseband seems to have better signal and less battery drain.

[Q] Bootloader/Radio - Stock or Not

I just had a question regarding changing the bootloader. My Nexus had 4.0.1 on it with UGKL1. Now I'm not the latest CM nightly with franco kernel. My radio is still the same and i have no issues. My question is i see some people updating the boot loader and also some posts about the oled colors being off with some bootloaders/rom combos.
Id just like to know if there is any need to change the bootloader and radio?
Thanks.
technically no. if your phone is working fine, you're good to go. some people achieved better results by updating the bootloader and the radio however.

Using -36 baseband on r800at prevents battery charging

I have an r800at running the Ancestor LE rom. When I flash the -36 baseband found and described in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1469473, my battery no longer charges. In the phone's info the baseband does show up at -36 but the battery refuses to charge. Everything else including the network works though. Its the same for whether or not I installed the Play baseband libs or not. Does anyone know the problem? Any help would be appreciated.
Damn, I wouldn't expect that!
Try to backup your current rom, reflash a brand new one and then -36 baseband with libs and check if the charging works.
But besides I'm not sure if flashing -36 baseband is a good idea if you do this on "at" version.

Yea I was a bit surprised that no one else had my problem. I've tried fresh installs where I've wiped everything and used it with a different ROM as well, Xperia Play NXT to be exact. The results are the same so I'm just wondering if there's something I can do. Would be nice to have the better battery life and better signal that I've been hearing a lot about .

How did you manage to get -36 and NXT to work? I've been trying all orders of installation I can come up with.
.58 firmware
doomkernel
baseband
NXT (bootloop at installation of new lockscreen+settings)
.58 firmware
doomkernel
NXT
baseband (new lockscreen+settings are lost)
.58 firmware
baseband
doomkernel (all these three without ever starting phone)
NXT (bootloop at installation of new lockscreen+settings)
Edit: I finally managed to fix it. The trick was to first install -36 baseband ftf and then install .58 with "exclude baseband" checked. In all my other tries I installed .58 first and then baseband tft in later, but for some reason the baseband ftf deleted the userdata partition (CWM complained about this). But by installing .58 after baseband it reinstalled the userdata partition.

[Q] Update modem/baseband to XXUBMJ7 without KNOX - possible?

hey guys,
i'm just wondering if KNOX comes along when you update modem version to XXUBMJ7 by flashing only NON-HLOS.bin (not the rest of the rom!). Is it safe to do so? Anyone already tested this?
I want to update modem, because reception with my I9195 is really bad...At the moment i have modem version XXUAMH4.
THX for any help!
Nobody tried or has any informations about that???
I can confirm now that flashing modem to newest version is possible without getting Knox
Ah and here is the screenshot...
is the reception better with the new modem?
I think so, but i'm still testing. Perhaps tomorrow i can tell you more
Hey guys I am veeeery new to flashing and stuff so i tried to get baseband I9195XXUBMJ7 on my phone and have I9195XXUCNK1 right now (I think).
I followed a step by step guide on how to use Odin and I had no error messages coming up but when i checked in the system infos it said Baseband: unknown and in an app I got to SimUnlock it said Bootloader: I9195XXUCNK1 (I guess that's my current baseband)
I could really need some help and you seem to really know what to do
Best regards

Questions About SIM Unlock

Hello.
I have the SGH-M919 with the following details:
Android version: 4.2.2
Baseband version: M919UVUEMK2
Kernel version: 3.4.0
Build number: M919UVUAMDB
This is after using various guides to rooting, getting rid of the SIM lock, changing the baseband version and reverting it.
Right now the phone works, I can make calls and the sound is fine. However, I can't turn Wi-Fi on. Thus, I have a few questions:
Is there a way to fix Wi-Fi on my phone?
Will upgrading to 4.3 be worth it, or will there be any risks?
Will upgrading/flashing a new (stock) rom bring back the SIM lock, or am I done with that?
Thanks.
1) there are several ways. You can start by downgrading your modem to its original since you are still on older firmware and see if that works
2) not very risky, just make sure you know about Knox and all that
3) Nope, unlocked for good
Thanks!
I'm so happy to know that it's gone for good. That means I could probably just flash a stock 4.3 rom and get the matching modem with it, and hopefully have wi-fi working, right?

Mixing and matchin ROMs, Radios, and Kernels

So I'm rooted sitting on 5.1.1 and I have a backup. One of the main reasons for rooting was to enhance performance and cut the fat without loosing my S-Pen. That being said I've noticed my data speed steadily dropping over the months and I'm attributing that to the old radio firmware. I understand how to flash the firmware from odin but it is safe to flash the 6.0.1 PF3 radio over my 5.1.1 PA1. Could i also flash a Kernel that may help with performance or battery life. Is flashing portions of a full firmware safe in general. We all know the bad things that can happen when just doing these things without asking, and i'm not finding clear answers. Any help is greatly appreciated.
same boat almost
dam man I was just trying to hunt down some of the same answers hopefully someone can chime in here ... but I'm kinda looking at trying to go backwards and trying to find some clear answers about the fact that the note 4 does have dual radios and newer phones don't ... my question is looking at does the newer firmware turn off one of the modems to preserve battery ... the BPA1 moden really seems ****ty but I'm running stock rooted 5.1.1 i may be trying to reflash the modem itself first
