Hello everyone,
I have a Samsung Galaxy Nexus (Canadian cell phone company I believe) and I am trying to bypass the gesture combination lock. It would be great to do it without resetting the phone to factory settings, but at this point I don't care... whichever way is easier will work.
I've tried:
Installed Android SDK and tried running different commands from the command prompt like "adb reboot bootloader" and "fastbootflash recovery" but the device was not found. I checked my drivers and it seemed to be there. I have the Android folder under App Data>Local and I also have a recovery image in that folder.
Booting from recovery for a facotry reset. Whenever I had the option to boot recovery it would reboot with a logo of an android with a red exclamation triangle.
If anyone can help me out I would greatly appreciate it.
There is no good reason for trying to *bypass* gesture lock.

Step 1. Return the stolen phone, you thief.
Step 2. There is no step 2.

And let's not forget the fact that he doesn't even know what carrier he's with: "Canadian cell phone company I believe". I smell something fishy...
Anywho, there isn't a way to bypass the gesture security feature.
Sorry, I have to say this since you must be from Canada...

Its easy.
At the bottom there is an "Emergency Call" option. Dial 911 on the dialer that comes up. Tell the person who answers (they are a type of tech support) that you have this phone you cant access because it used to belong to someone else and give them your exact location.
They will promptly show up and assist you with it.

Just lost my phone in taxi I'm rooted also have face unlock and pattern unlock secondary. Is there anything I can do to assure the finder can't use it. Or can I track it. I'm on monthly 4g so no insurance!
That sucks man. As for gps locating your phone I believe that's offered by your insurance, or if you had any type of Norton, kaspersky, trend micro etc security on it. They offer stuff like that. Otherwise you might be SOL. As for them getting in I don't know. Maybe someone else can shed some light on that answer.

Go to the play store from your computer and download "plan b" it will be pushed to your phone and allows you to track it.

I hate how easy it is for someone to look up how to wipe a phone and easily bypass all security. Usually when someone finds a phone, that person doesn't want to know your stuff.
Where's my Droid can also be pushed, and then you can get it's location

did u ever set up Lookout on you phone? it comes w/it.. if you maybe randomly did one day, you can find it with that
2nd to the Plan B. That works amazingly. Also, check if you have a cab receipt. You might be able to use that to identify which cab specifically had the phone. You can call into their dispatch office and ask for that cab. Lookout is awesome too.
I called the cab said he saw no phone. Another passanger could have gotten it. I'm not even going to bother now what's done is done. Thanks to you and everyone for your help. I wanted a new phone anyway maybe my wife will get me one for fathers day. I find that the GS3 is not much of a significant upgrade from the GSII. I would much more suggest a Galaxy Nexus since it will still be relevant for many more months to come. The GN comes with pure stock ICS not that TW crap. The GN is almost certain to receive jellybean directly from Google pretty quick while the S3 will have to suffer through what the SII just went through from GB to ICS

I would recommend setting up a pin lock on your next device, that way whenever the phone is restarted it prompts you for the pin. It doesn't matter if it's been wiped or not, it registers with your carrier. Also, as added security, I use Avast and from there I can remotely wipe my sd card and the phone, thus removing any chance of someone getting any of my personal info.

Only PBA I know of is a bluetooth profile. What are you referring to?
I have the GSM Nexus so proceed with caution, but I'm wondering if they use the same types of files and folders. This is what I did to fix it when I accidentally wiped my IMEI:
cmstlist said:
Okay that was quick - solved it!
I believe the problem was that I'd restored the entire /data partition of my prior unit's backup including the /data/radio folder. Not a good idea! The solution was to copy the nv_data.bin and .md5 files from /factory and paste them to replace the incorrect ones in /data/radio. Now my IMEI is back!
Time to backup those files somewhere safe...

Just flash it to stock and play stupid. Then they will "factory data reset" it, because that fixes everything. Ha ha. No really, they'll give you a replacement.

if you can make a nandroid,
first off you need to download wugfresh's Gnex toolkit:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766475
second you need to install all the drivers if you haven't already.
then you need to choose your model type
after you will need to click on back to stock what it does is it resets everything, assuming your phone ant boot up choose not booting
once that is done you can choose the factory image which can be downloaded from Googles factory images or you can use the options provided
after that you follow all the steps provided in the tool kit. the tool kit is mostly automatic so it wont take allot of time.
once that is done you are back in stock and have lost everything but don't fret because you can root it again using the same tool kit.
quick point your phone still has an unlocked boot loader so don't worry about that.
once youve completed the above steps you should be back to your good old galaxy nexus home screen
Verizon won't warranty it because the sticker under the battery has turned colors. No water damage I just touched one day when I took out the battery my hands were slightly wet prob not smart lol. I know this wasn't the cause it has been 5 months the only thing damaged was the sticker and warranty. Yes I have the right ROMs installed I'm not a newb. This is like the same issue with the s3 I tried to use the qpst method but I can't even get the hidden menu to show on the phone clueless as to why. I just want to use my gnex as a beater phone when I'm out.

There are plenty of legitimate reasons to unroot. My company is forced to used the "Good for Enterprise" email application which checks for root, busybox, and test keys inside the build.prop everytime you access the application.
It's the only email application for Android that allows remote device wipes, locks email, and encrypts/decrypts data. I would wager that most companies now support either a BB BES server or a GOOD server for their iOS/Android counterparts.
That sounds like a terrible decision on the app maker's part. Imagine if Outlook checked that you had Administrator rights on Windows and then refused to run. I wonder if you temp unroot with voodoo root keeper, etc, would that work?

That app checks for busybox, would have to uninstall it too, and most likely many apps will break.

It's actually a setting that is enabled by the Administrator of the GOOD server, not a default setting designed by application maker.
Your analogy about Outlook checking for Administrator rights is not too far fetched. I've seen many deployments in the industry where employees do not have administrative rights to the pc/laptops/machines that their company gives them to use. The last thing you want is an employee accidentally installing something malicious that affects everyone on the network.
