[Q] how to set SIII to only use 2G - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Hi all, I just got my SIII and it is badass! but i am wondering if there is a way to set this phone so that it will only use 2G network so I can save some battery. Every other android phone had this option, so when i went to go look for it on this SIII, its not even there. any answers will be great! thanks

I'm assuming you have T-Mobile? If so download an app called "phone info". Open it and go to Device Information. On the bottom there's a dropdown currently on "GSM auto". Select GSM only instead. If you want 4g only the select WCDMA only. Back out of the app. You can accomplish the same by dialing *#*#4636#*#* in the dialer.

[Q] Diagnostics settings

The T-Mobile G2 has *#*#4636#*#* to enter the diagnostics function.
Would there be anyone out there that could give me the best (performance) settting options that I should select with my G2 when in the diagnostic mode? Thanks in advance!

I mostly use WCDMA only. You also can downlaod AnyCut from the market and load the shortcut PHONE INFO and it will do the same thing as dialing those numbers
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Also too, why do I use WCDMA only is for it only looks for HSPA+. That way if I'm say in walmart it does not go back and forth on HSPA+ and Edge all the time. If its not 100% HSPA+ than my cell won't connect and waste that little bit of battery roaming
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
If you're in a city with good HSPA or 3G coverage, use WCDMA preferred. If you're in a city with spotty 3G/HSPA coverage, use GSM auto (PRL). The first will connect to 3G/HSPA if at all possible. The second option needs to reach a higher signal threshold before it switches to 3G/HSPA. I've tested both.

I know this is a newb question but what does it mean when you see all of those numbers and symbols? Is it a number to call or text? I want to know because I say it under the OTA post in order to "Check In" but I have no idea what it means or how to use it.
Its basiclly a code to get into phone information on your cell

You enter it just like a phone call, then it will present the Phone Info menus to you. To checkin, it's the same sort of thing, just dial *#*#2432546#*#*
Hope that helps.

2G mode and 3G mode only

I've noticed in the menu options, there is an option to keep the phone in 2G mode only. On the other hand, is there any way to keep the phone in 3G / 3.5 / 4G mode? Any software that can do this?

The phone will only switch to 2G if faster speeds are not available. The 2G mode option allows you to prevent the phone from switching to faster (and more battery consuming) data connections....
From the dialer, you can type in *#*#4636#*#* to bring up some "secret" settings. From there you can configure your phone to only use 3G.

How about if I don't want 2G at all and want it to stay 3G only, even if there is no signal? I remember this option on the SGS 2..

You do what chrono just said and the hidden menu let's you force 3g only. *#*#4636#*#* on the dial pad.

Go into phone info. From there if you scroll down a bit you will see a text that says something like "GSM/CDMA auto". Press that and you should get a drop down menu. Change the setting to "CDMA only". That should work.

Not sure how that disables 2G (1xRTT). Unless I'm mistaken, both 1xRTT (2G) and EVDO (3G) run on top of CDMA.
Also, you can get to this from settings->wireless & networks->More...->Mobile Networks->Network Mode
There you can select LTE/CDMA or CDMA.
And it always sticks

[Q] Roaming

Is there any way to force roaming without root?
I haven't found a way to force roaming with root, let alone without. Not even manually update the prl.. I miss my evo3d with corporate prl and roam control
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda premium
Yeah is there any way we can? I definitely need that in one location
Sent from my LG-LS970 using Tapatalk 2
With root roam control should work. It will only be 1x until we can load a corporate prl though.

Every Sprint PRL
Do you guys think we can use this method on our LGOG also?

This is my first lg.. didn't know that.
I'm not savvy enough to try it but someday perhaps. As of now I think if we just request it from the roam control developers they may try

Any ideas? I've even tried Roam Control (root), but it doesn't work. I've also tried using the Optimus S (LS670) hack, but no dice either,
Update: Also tried looking at the Hidden Menu from here, nothing that jumps out as far as roaming.
So I think I stumbled onto something, thanks to this 2010 page. I found this because I was getting tired of getting no signal while my coworker (Verizon) had 3 bars at a conference room.
By following the steps below, you acknowledge that you do this at your own risk, don't abuse or Sprint may get mad, YMMV, all your base, etc...
To try to force roam
1. Go into the hidden menu by "dialing" 3845#*970# (from this thread)
2. Scroll all the way to the bottom, go to "IOT Hidden Menu"
3. "CDMA Setting" -> "CDMA Preference"
4. Under "Band Setting", choose "Cell Only". From the initial link (July 2010):
this forces only 800mhz CDMA, which is typically NOT Sprint, though if you are in a rare area where Sprint has 800mhz, it will lock you onto the 800mhz band, which can traverse better than the 1900mhz PCS band. In most areas you will notice it switch to roaming.

Tmobile S4 on AT&T cannot connect to LTE help!

Hey everyone!
So I picked up a tmobile s4 to use on ATT since I read it was the most unlocked due to bands / bootlocker. I unlocked it via the method described on this site via the debug menu.
Popped in ATT sim, everything looked fine initially.
1. I'm only getting 4G in an LTE area. device hasn't picked up any LTE anywhere yet.
2. When I go under "Network Mode" and select "LTE/GSM/WCDMA (auto connect) the signal dies out and it always reverts back to GSM/WCDMA"
3. I've called ATT a few times and triple checked that I'm on an Android LTE data plan, so that's not an issue. ATT techs suggested it could be a device issue and maybe I should take it into their tech center.
4. Tried to set up ATT Visual Voicemail, that failed also.
So can it be a Sim issue? Maybe something on tmobiles side? Since device was never active on their network. A lemon S4?
I've run out of options
Any help would be appreciated.
TIA!

I also found the setting from here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMyD8zqk-Hg which led to here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2336085 .
The main end game fix was that ATT had my IMIE # incorrectly set. Once they fixed that my LTE was a go!

How to switch 3G Only

How I can switch my Fire Phone to 3G Only Band? Some App or somthing? Who help? :what:
Go to the dialer, enter *#*#4636#*#* and tap "Phone Information". On the next screen, you can select 'WCDMA preferred' from the drop-down menu. However, I'm not sure if the phone will automatically reset itself back after a restart or whatnot.
Yes. I discovery that. Its simple and easy. Now for me, a very good phone.
Is there anyway to turn off 3G ? for use 2G GSM only mode , I want to use EDGE option since my area has the weak 3G signal.

You follow the same steps I gave in my previous post. Instead of selecting WCDMA preferred, you select GSM only in the drop-down menu.

Thank you it works great without reset the phone.
And easier and lazier way is to install the app "Phone testing", it is the shortcut to the same menu. On Motorola phone the app is required because that dialer combination doesn't work.
