Hey guys.
My power button got seeped by some cleaning solution two days ago, everything is working fine, but the power button has become extra stiff for some reason.
I need to push harder in order to make it work, it works every time, but it feels really awkward, it still can give a good tactile feedback when I click with the tip with my nail. But if I "thumb" the button I wouldn't feel a thing, although it still works.
I'm pretty sure that it still has some unwanted moisture inside, how can I dry it out? Putting the phone in a bowl of rice?
Any inputs would be welcomed, thanks

I'd take the battery, SIM chip and back cover off then wrap it in a tissue and seal it in a bag with rice for a day. I've done this in the past with success and that should drawl the moisture out. If you can't spare a day over night might be enough.
I do have to say that I don't think the button is that sensitive to begin with. On my other devices I just kinda slide my finger across it and the phone turns on. Not the GNex, I keep forgetting and then have to firmly press the button to turn on the phone.
Good luck to you.
Is it okay if I only submerge the top part of the phone in the rice?
Something is wrong with the button for sure, it feels like something is stuck in there

Yeah rice won't harm it.
I don't know what else I can do, I don't think the rice is working....
It feels like something is stuck in between the power button or something, it's just feel very stiff when I try to push it.
I will try to use compressed air, hopefully it works.
You could always take it apart!
You gotta take it apart.
It's really easy.

99% alcohol + Qtips
I guess I'll have to live with it for now......
Alcohol didn't really help nor compressed air.
I heard from other places that contact cleaner might help, but I couldn't find any store near my neighborhood.
If I have time I will try to take this apart.
For the ones who knows, if I want to take the phone apart and clean the power button, do I have to reapply the adhesives that holds the button to the phone?
There are no adhesive that I know of that holds the buttons in place. You pretty much put tape on them to hold it in place upon re installation and take them off after you're done.
There is no adhesive. All I did when I dad a housing replacement (wanted it to feel new again) and it just pops in and done.

So i go my device about 3 weeks ago. last night i noticed the volume down button wasn't working, so i took off the battery cover and this is what i've found.
Theres a plastic piece that goes over the button and looks like the one for volume down as slid into the device, the volume up & PTT button's plastic cover looks to be going loose as well.. :/
I know i can take it into the device support center but they'll probably give me a refurbished device which i dont want. I payed for a new device, its fairly new and i should get a new device!
Anyone else experienced this?
ouch. it looks like your other buttons are a little broken too. how hard are you pressing those? ive had my tilt 2 for a month and a half and the buttons are still perfectly aligned and feel brand new.
Looking at my case and the vol/ptt buttons inside it doesn't even look like it'd be possible to push hard enough on the outside to cause that. However all three buttons do have the same internal plastic piece which is probably why the other buttons are going.
If you're under 30 days can't you return the device? I thought AT&T had a 30 day return period.
My volume buttons didn't break off like yours, but they did lose tactile feedback after a while. That is, when I press it, it doesn't click and bounce back as strong as before. They felt dull when I press them.
So what I did was put layers of scotch tape against the inside of the back cover where it would come in contact with the volume buttons. (Not sure if I explained it properly). Now my buttons work beautifully again.
If others are having this problem, please let me know. I can post some pics so that you can try.

I'm having that with mine right now actually, just started noticing it in the past week. I'll give your trick a shot, thanks!
so i got pretty drunk last night (almost like every night but thats a different story ) and i remember dropping my phone on the pavement. And just now i noticed the volume down button has fixed itself from the drop! haha
i tried manually moving the cover piece back over the button when it first broke and that didn't help. so i guess the solution is to drop your phone!
so i was applying my bodyguardz on my phone and i was putting the screen one on, and a bit of solution splashed onto the home button, and now the led light wont work any tips?
Do you mean the track pad?

I have the same problem but i bought my phone second hand. Not onlyy does my home button not work but the whole left eedge of my digitizer seems dead, but luckily the phone still operates fine. But it is annoying having to press back...
Anyone reccomend a self help solution for the unfortunate?
This may sound weird, but I've had great luck fixing water damage with rubbing alcohol. Get as close to pure rubbing alcohol as possible, take out the battery, and dip your phone into it. Then take a vacuum and suck it all out, and give it a day to dry.
no offence but that is such a stupid idea, id ruin my phone

Have you ever dip your phone in alcohol ? if so how did it work out, is it still working ?
today i applied an XO skin and i applied the wet applicator only once and squeegeed the water out just like the instructions says and now for some reason, my power button has stopped working and sometimes it does work but it acts as if im holding down the power button and my power menu options pop up..... i bought this device unlocked from Expansys_USA and their customer service is done for the weekend....should i try putting it in rice?? im freaking out right now....this is not cheap, and i am seriously gonna be pissed if it was cuz of the XO....HELP.... :'(
How soon after applying the skin did you put your battery back in the device and try to turn it on?
Usually, you have to wait at least 24hours after applying a wet skin to have enough time for it to dry safely.

This happened with my Captivate some time ago. I think it might have been from dropping it. The SAME EXACT thing happens when trying use the power button on the captivate. Sometimes it work fine for a few pushes, other times it will act like I held it down on a push, and sometimes when just holding it, it pops the power menu up. I think the contact inside the switch is busted and floating around. When it touches, it activates. Therefor, it can be activated by shaking the phone. I can replicate it on my Captivate.
Those buttons are pretty much tiny little switches on the PCB. They probably got water in them if they work sometimes, and then don't work - and sometimes seem stuck on.
You'd need to clean the switch with some contact cleaner of some kind... but you'd need to take apart your phone most likely. You don't really want to get that all in your phone, or on the screen. It might ruin the coating on the screen, or damage other stuff depending on what type of cleaner you used.

Hopefully this fixes his. I still have a captivate with a non working power button. Cleaning it didn't help.

it is easy to fix once you disassemble the housing you just pry open the power button and clean the contacts

you remove the black tape around the power button so you can see the contacts just clean them and you are good
bear in mind that you don't have to disassemble the boards like the video , just the housing
Thanks guys! I left it in rice overnight and now everything seems to be working perfect! Oh man....I was so scared! I bought this mofo unlocked! Its funny how when u actually try to protect it, it just ends up getting worse! I'm done with wet applies, I'm keeping it naked! Lol
Edit: its still doing the same thing again...spoke too soon......well kinda....its not doing it nearly as much

i will try this now!
I didnt really notice this before but when you press your home button, when your holding it down fully, does it go past the top rim of the screen glass? I noticed just now. Not below the glass, but does it go to the point you can feel the rim of the glass?
I do feel the glass press against my thumb when i press it but it doesnt go deep enough to cause a huge discomfort although it did take me a while to get use to the feel.

ok thank you =D didnt know if it was just my phone lol. and nah its not to deep. My main worry is over time gunk getting in there.. like gunk on the graps of triggers on controllers... damn skyrim XD
Some M8 phones have the problem of the power button getting stuck in the plastic around it and thus keeping itself pressed.
In this case you see this on the screen: "to restart your phone press and hold the power and volume up buttons for 10 seconds."
OF COURSE you can get this fixed through warranty.
If you don't want to do that cause you don't want to wait, you can do what I did.
(I am not responsible if this doesn't work well for you and I guess that after this procedure they won't replace the button for free anymore)
Steps:
1. Get a flat screwdriver. Heat it over stove, but not until it.s red, just until it is a little hot. It's better to heat it a little, try it, if it doesn't work heat a little more and so on. Otherwise, if it's too hot, when you touch the button it will melt everything around it and way too far into the button.
2. Put the screwdriver on some surface and keep it steady with the end sticking out. Hold the opposite side of the button a little pressed so that the part of the button that catches on the plastic sticks out.
3. Bring the phone towards the screwdriver carefully so that you melt that edge of the power button just a little bit. Just melt the edge, so you give it a slope like this / , not the entire side of the button.
Finally, you should get the same results as you can see in my pics. It's barely visible that the button has been tampered with and for me it's way better than waiting for weeks for the warranty to repair it.
Cheers and be careful not to get that screw driver too hot or too far into the button.
LE: be careful that the IR blaster is on the left side of the button, if you look at the phone from the front. In my case I had to melt the right side which is about 3/4 lengths away from the IR blaster. If you melt the side of the button that has the IR blaster in it, I'm not sure what would happen. The IR blaster should be fine, but the curvature of the button that you add by melting might deflect the light. Not sure.

And your IR is still in order no damage from heat etc?
The IR is fine. It's on the other side of the button. It's about 1/4 th of the button. so 3/4 distance away from the melted part.
Not sure why this is a problem as the button doesn't seem to go far enough in to cause this problem, however it's not something I would do. I would have just got a small thin implement and just added a little Vaseline or Petroleum jelly around the sides of the button, making sure to work it down the sides of the button. That should be enough.

Here is the real question. Why does this suddenly start happening after owning the phone for 2.5 months and it never being dropped. What has changed is I started using the Dot View Case right before this started happening.
