Rooting Orange DHD with Gingerbread and the AAHK - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just have a couple of questions with regards to using the AAHK with my handset. I've previously used it to root my phone, but after the ear piece became distorted I got it replaced and have a new stock handset.
I'm running version 3.13.61.5 of sense.
My understanding from reading the documentation for the AAHK, it appears it is necessary to downgrade the version of the rom to get perm root as temp root is only possible with the version I have. However there doesn't seem to be way to return to the stock rom (Orange branded) that is packaged with my phone, and I'd have to return to the unbranded HTC RUU. I want to ensure that I can claim under orange care if needed.
So firstly my question is, is there any simple way to do this with AAHK?
If not, is it possible for my to take a copy of the stock rom before applying the AAHK which I can then reapply if needed?

[Q] Newbiee rooting query

Hi,
I have a stock DHD, which has 2.2 via OTA.
I have gone through a lot of forums articles here on xda but am still not sure about the below points:
1) I know that Visionary would not work on my phone unless i downgrade. But I am confused, wouldn't downgrading remove all the fixes and enhancements which came in 2.2.1 over 2.1 android??
2) Is there any other clean and tested way to root my phone apart from Visionary, which does not need me to downgrade?
3) Apart from the Visionary way, is there any existing way to temproot my phone?
You're downgrading firmware to a rootable one, you're not going back to 2.1, basically you're still on froyo 2.2. Basically you can't root without downgrading, there is no other way.
If you're planning on running custom roms then you can just flash roms with 2.3 or 2.2.1
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Yes, downgrading will put you back to software version 1.32, but if you have software version 1.72 or above you will not be able to get root access to your phone.
As soon as you have downgraded, gained permanent root, and optionally gained s-off or eng s-off you will be able to install custom roms of your choice with the newest leaked softare ex Gingerbread.
By my knowledge its no other way to root your DHD, but to follow the very good treads in the developer section.
But the downgrade bit is only a temporary state that you need to do before you install a custom ROM with all the newest features.
But then this means, the there would be no way to keep a backup(nandorid) etc. of my stock/untouched state
If something goes wrong, I would be without a backup of my undisturbed original state.
As far as I know you need temproot to downgrade, but that is in basic shell so you're still not able to make a nandroid backup...

[Q] Wrong CID with wrong software number > unable to update

Hello XDA community,
I have the following problem. I bought an unbranded HTC Desire HD but when the Gingerbread update was released and I did not receive it and got curious what was going on.
Using CID Getter, I found out that the CID of my phone is T-MOB101 whereas it should be HTC_001 on an unbranded phone. The software information on my phone is as follows:
Android: 2.2.1
Software number: 1.72.405.3
Using the search function in this forum, I found out that the T-MOB101 CID only exists with the software number 1.32. As far as I know this means that the phone I bought was a branded phone which was overwritten with another stock rom with the software version 1.72. That means I can wait until kingdom comes regarding the Gingerbread update.
I'd really like to update to Gingerbread and fix my phone in this respect. Having conducted some research, I found out that (1) changing the CID requires to downgrade to 1.32 because I'd need to root the phone and that is not possible with 1.72. If I wanted to back up my phone, e.g. with Titanium Backup, (2) I'd need to root it as well and, thus, downgrade to 1.32. Also, if I wanted to backup my current ROM with ROM Manager, I'd need the required privilidges and root and, therefore before, downgrade the phone.
If I have to go through this trouble, I think, I could install a custom rom as well (e.g. Virtuous Unity as I'd like to have Sense 3.0). I've found out that I always have to downgrade no matter which option I choose because I need to be able to root the phone and, apparently, that's not possible with 1.72. - Is all of the above concluded correctly?
In fact, I'd just like to install a custom rom with sense 3.0 now and be able to flash back to the stock rom, just in case I'd ever need to meet the requirements for warranty, and backup the files I need to backup (except for data which I can synchronize from the Google server, of course).
Does anyone have an optimal procedure of solution at hand? - I'd be very grateful. - Thank you very much in advance.
Cheers,
B-Ball
ok...if you say you're phone is branded you need to create a goldcard first to downgrade and i believe it already exists a thread for downgrading...just do a search
Well, I am not sure if you can still call my phone a "branded" one due to the above facts. I assume it was branded and then an unbranded stock rom with the software version 1.72 was installed but the CID was not changed.
However, do you think there is a way for me to be able to install a custom rom with sense 3.0 and be able to flash back to a strock rom at a later point if I have to downgrade first in order to get root rights?
Yes you will have to downgrade first to be able to get root rights and change the CID.
To get back to stock you have to use a RUU. These are official HTC utilities that wipe out all the changes (just about) that you made to your phone and make it stock. There is a thread somewhere for these. I think in Development.

You need the official RUU to go back to stock and if you want to change the CID you still need to root your device

[Q] Flashing Advice - Orange Branded Handset

Hi all,
I have just registered today after spending a week or so reading and digesting what I can.
I have an 'Orange' branded handset and would like to flash the device with a generic HTC image.
My current build number is 2.50.61.3. and would like to know if it's possible to flash this... RUU_Ace_Gingerbread_S_HTC_WWE_2.50.405.2_Radio_12.54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2_release_199042_signed.exe
From what I can make out... That RUU is the same version as my current build but is a HTC rom rather than an Orange butchered version. Is that right?
Hi,
I also have an Orange branded handset, but a couple weeks ago rooted using Advanced Ace Hack Kit and since have flashed quite a few ROMS. I would suggest you do the same and flash Android Revolution HD. You get all the stock Sense 3.0 freshness with root privelages and there are a ton of mods to make it even better!
Hi,
Thanks for your reply. I'm a bit closer to where I want to be.
Although... I do want to keep my phone as stock as possible and want to flash my handset with an untouched HTC version of the 2.3.3 rom.
I read about using Gingerbreak to root and unlock my handset... I liked the sound of using that because it didn't seem to do anything other than make the necessary changes in order to flash the required RUU. Am I right in saying that?
tbh, you'd be better off using the Advanced Ace Hack Kit... then getting it to return you to 'un-branded stock' after you let it run its initial course. It will remove ROOT and will revert it to an unbranded HTC rom.
Unbranding your phone manually requires creating a goldcard, which the AAHK does seamlessly as part of its process.
Its a pain to do it manually, and an added pain to flash a stock WWE RUU.
AAHK will do what you need in a couple of button presses...
JUST MAKE SURE U READ THE EFFEN MANUAL!!! ^_~
...in fact, it literally won't run unless you read it... >_< LOL!
geehay008 is spot on, I had and orange uk branded DHD and the Advanced ace hack worked smoothly. just read it carefully (as annoying as it sounds it is important to do so to avoid messing it up).
It took me over a year to build up the courage to root and flash my DHD but it really is worth it. some of the roms out there are fantastic.
Just remain calm and take your time.

I've got the correct drivers but i'm unable to find why acehack kit isn't finding the phone ...

[Q] How to know if my phone "shipped" with Gingerbread

I am interested in unlocking my Orange branded Desire HD. The AMT looks helpful but I need to downgrade to 1.32. I found some instructions for this but the disclaimer at the top bothers me.
DO NOT USE THIS IF YOUR PHONE CAME WITH GINGERBREAD.

(it bricks the phone if your phone came pre-installed). Now I have two issues with this:
1) I did not care about android when I got it in February 2011 (the date probably means NOT gingerbread)
2) I sent it back to HTC in December 2011 because the GPS and proximity sensor were faulty. It came back working and the job sheet said something like the circuit board had been replaced, but like a n00b I could not find it when I searched when I realised how important it might be.
It came back with the same IMEI, if that helps.
So here is the question:
How can I tell if my Desire HD is a "shipped gingerbread" device.
I have root, ENG S-OFF, know how to run adb and fastboot but not much more than that.
I Guess Ur Using The Froyo Android 2.2 U Can Go To Settings,About Phone and check android version if its 2.2 then its froyo if 2.3 its gingerbread but in my opinion its froyo since you've routed it etc
Yes, sorry, I meant to say I am on Absolution 3.6, which is gingerbread, but what I'm running now doesn't tell me whether I'll be bricked if I downgrade.
i didnt get why u want to downgrade and downgrade to what?
As I say...

So you are saying you can't root the gingerbread Desire HDs?
No Cz Htc Have Made A Security For The gingerbread update for the dhd so it cant be rooted u will have to downgrade it to froyo to gain root
1) no need to go.through all this trouble. You are allready sim unlocked. All the rooting methods used gfree Wichita along with soff gives you simunlock aswell
2) GB. Is rootable using ace hack kit no need to downgrade
Edit I should add. Their is no.need to downgrade unless your phone is on the newer sense 3.0

[Q] Can I flash any RUU with unlocked bootloader?

Hey guys,
About 7 weeks ago, my simcardreader stopped functioning. Because my device was rooted, I unrooted it, and flashed the original RUU to be able to get it repaired. 3 weeks later I got my device back, only to discover that the simcardreader was still defective. Ok, back to the repair center.
Yesterday I received it again, and was glad that the cardreader was working again. Glad...untill I saw that they flashed a wrong rom, with only five languages: English, Spanish, French, Italian and German. As I live in Belgium, where we speak Dutch, I'd prefer to have a Dutch rom, but apparantly that can only be done in the repair center. But again three weeks without my desire hd, me no likey.
Rooting is apparantly out of the question, because I'm on rom 3.12.405, which seems to be very hard to root. So I started to look at the bootloader unlock mechanism. If I unlock it, would I be able to flash any RUU, i.e the original RUU I flashed before sending it to the repair center (1.32)? Do you guys see any other options?
Thank you!
Well if you could do that, you'd be able to root, wouldn't you? I didn't quite follow the scene lately with the latest software releases, but if your SW version is very difficult to root, I'm sure some dev already tried flashing older RUU, and most likely failed...
Can you flash an older when son? NO.
3.12.405 being difficult to root? NO.
just use the advance ace hack kit. Its as automated as it gets. Just make sure you read the manual

In the dev-thread i read everywhere that devices shipped with that version can't be hacked with the AAHK. However, I'm in doubt whether that applies to my device. Originally it shipped with Froyo, then I had it rooted, unrooted it to get it repaired. Then I got it back with 3.12.405. Does that mean it is shipped with Gingerbread?
Both stock Froyo and Gingerbread (pre Sense 3.0) supported
This kit should work fine on HTC Inspire and HTC Desire HD Software versions below 3.06.405.1 which require the radio/kernel downgrade before a root exploit is available.

Lol if you send it for repair 3rd time, you can get your money back before sending it away, at least that's how it works in Switzerland, not sure if it's the same policy throughout EU but you can try your luck and invest money into HTC One X or something...

That's old news. At one point it was true but attn1 was quick to remedy that by using the zergrush and taco root exploits. For those on sense 3.0 it is a little different as it has to downgrade you back to 2.50.405 then you rerun the kit and gain soff and root

Thank you for your answers. I'll try it tomorrow.
I think the hack kit just bricked my phone. Can't even get in bootloader anymore Read the manual five times through before I started.
I was on 3.12.405. During the downgrade process, my bootloader froze, waited for hours, but battery died. New battery, phone doesn't boot
Update:
without sd-card, I can get into bootloader and use navigation. With sd-card, bootloader just freezes. Can't get into recovery, because it freezes at the red exclamation mark.
I suppose you have a PD98IMG on your SD card?
Check if any PD98IMG is in sd card as said above, and delete it.
If it doesn't reboot, you can run the 3.12.405.1 RUU from Hboot. Later you can try the hack kit again.
By the way are you S-ON or S-OFF? and what is your Hboot now?
Try getting a goldcard made.
1. Put ur SD-C in another rooted phone to get ur cards ID.
2. Create the gold card on pc
3 insert it in phone and reflash ur rom in it.
this worked for me after i updated to 3.x and tried to root with AAHK.
