[Q] Best ROM and Kernel. - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Hey guys, I I am new to the galaxy sii I got it just today. And since I am new here I wanted to know the best rom and kernel from you users who have used it more than I.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app

First a question, do you want TW or an AOSP ROM?

What he said - stock or touchwiz. Also - do you need wifi calling or not? (Non-TW ROMs don't have this feature).
Here's a list in the meantime of my preferences:
Touchwiz - Darkside then Infamous
Stock - CM9 then AOKP
You can also use Apex or Nova Launcher to replicate stock look on TW roms (which I need for wifi calling).

Work around for asop 4.0.3

Guys if you want an asop experience just flash racers tw port and adb push Apex Launcher into /system/app and remove tw launcher. Runs as good as it's gonna get with m&s's blaze modems and all the other hotfixes at least till t-mo drops 4.0.3 or the ril gets fixed on this.

thanks i might have to try that i honestly can't stand ICS flavored with TW
No problem, battery life isn't that great right now because we don't have a t989 kernel but its def usable until we get a stable rc candidate.

have you tried the new kernel? should help battery life some..

I havent tried the romracer kernel but the unsecure mohan_kr kernel has booted up fine for me. I am really meticulous about clearing caches and superwiping though.
i hope some 1 gets a working aosp kernal down so we canfi have a nice vanilla ics fw
So does this work? Or april fools joke?

It works but battery life isn't where it should be until we get a better kernel. I'm pulling quadrants of 3900-4200 with this setup.

Or you could get the trebuchet launcher and push it to system/app

I thought pushing these 3rd party launchers to the system/app was having the side effect of being slightly unstable? Is the payoff really that much better having it as a system app?

See the Original Post... I updated the apk to fix a couple things. I am considering it done as it works and looks just like i want it to.
I do not see a reason why this would not run on any other de-odexed rom (stock or otherwise).
this is for Jelly Bean though, which would be CM10. not sure why you would test this on CM7,that's totally different.

Unfortunately I don't have 4g in my area . 3g works fine.
AOKP itself is awesome. The only problem is the developer for Ktoonz and etc. version of the rom don't actually own a sprint GS3. Its pretty much just a build/port without any real support or updates.
Where's the zip for this to work on TW ROMs?

Nightlies are pretty good by Kasp3r, but I wanted to use the most stable base of 4.1.2.

There's a possibility, if I can find out how to implement it. It's different from stock ROM to implement it. Also, not sure but I think the tethering hack is just an illusion, I can't find any surefire evidence that it works. I was never told by T-Mobile to begin with I needed to purchase tethering when I used any tethering apps, or CM, AOKP native tethering, and I highly doubt a firmware hack is going to bypass a server-side cap.
Just decompiled framework-res.apk, the settings are different from TouchWiz here on AOKP. So no, the mod cannot be implemented.

I have seen touchwiz launchers on none samsung ROM's but that is all you would get. Multiwindow will not and can not work on a nonsamsung based rom. Not until something is built from scratch to emulate what it does...so nope

Oh ok, is there a theme then? I saw in the play store that there was a touch wiz theme of the galaxy s4 which is what I wanted for cm10.1 but it says for T-Mobile theme chooser. Would it not work for my device if I went to cm10.1?

Agrred. Check the Android Development section. There are loads of TW ROMS, even some that look like AOSP but include TW features.

Well I'm actually using the hyperdrive 10 ROM and I noticed you've used it too. I like it but my signal stays on h+ or 3g and I don't get 4g unless I go to stock or cm10. And cm also had great battery life with my phone and I think it also has working group message and no problems at all. I'm thinking of either going back to the backup of csrom 1.2 or going to cm for battery life and a good signal because hyperdrive isn't working well and I want a touch wiz look.

nope. backups made in a respective custom recovery cannot be restored in another custom recovery.
what you can do is reinstall cwm, restore your backup and then install twrp again.
post #2 in the link in my signature has both cwm (6.0.3.0) and twrp (2.4.3.0) recovery-flashable zips under "Build your own Must Have toolkit"
