I'm basically a newbcake with lame sauce on the side and I apologize for asking questions that there might be answers to already. But I do look for them, it's just very difficult to find them without sifting through tons of threads and google search results (and I don't really have the time, I drive a truck and don't have much free time). And even when I try to do that with the time I do have, I can never find what I'm looking for.
I've been having issues with my signal and so I've started reading about radios and the like. I really don't understand them to begin with, I only have a partial idea. I believe they are responsible for the way the radio talks to the rom or something? And maybe they also handle how the signal is received and how a signal is transmitted? I'm just guessing, but I really don't know.
I know there are different radios that can be downloaded, and I know at the very least, they are specific to the type of phone and it's carrier, but are they also specific to the version of android? Be it ICS, or JB?
I've found lists of Radios before but the lists never really explain their significance, it just lists them and allows you to download them. So then the question remains; What different radios are available for VZW Galaxy Nexus phones, and what is the significance of each different version? Is there a version that is widely known to be superior in handling signal that I should know about? My phone is a MYSID-TORO and was on build IMM76K before I flashed Vicious JB 4.1 V5 (currently still running). I'd really like to learn more about radios and what I need to know to make the best decision on which one to flash, or if it even matters at all.
I apologize for the lack of structure; I really don't know exactly how to organize my mess of confused thoughts and questions about radios into a nice clean post. But I do greatly appreciate any information or help
Hi, I'll share what little I know. I've got my nexus in January, I've rooted it a couple of times, flashed a couple of roms. Last week I completely wiped my phone, no rom, I had a Google doorstop. I used ADB to flash everything. To answer your question yes radio files is the link from your phone to your carrier. I'm on jelly Bean, but I'm using ics radios FC 04/FC05. From what I've seen radio choice is depending on what works best in your area, for your carrier. I'm about 30 miles south. east of Los Angeles and I'm getting good signal with my radios. Read the threads on radios for your area, wherever you're from, but being a trucker I would go with whatever radios you see posted the most with the best reception overall. Hope I helped you some. Apparently you can't brick this phone permanently, there is always a fix, and there are many helpful post/people in the community

Where can I find threads on radios? I can try flashing different radios to see what works best but I just don't know enough about them yet, or which ones will work on my phone. :\
something I've also been noticing is the mentioning of boot loaders and radios together. What's the significance of that? A boot loader doesn't sound like it'd have anything to do with a radio, but apparently they are related somehow?
Thanks!

What nexus model do you have? 11.11 or 11.12. Or on the baseband version 09 or 10? Reason I ask is the 11.11 or the 09 version have superior reception than the other model.

Is this a fact? How do we tell if we have 11.11 or 11.12? My baseband is 10 and this is my third CLNR device, but they have all been 10s. This is the first one without cosmetic issues and the signal is so far, so good. I just am hoping I don't develop radio issues. Isn't the 09 version older?
I know you were asking cpomike, but I figured I'd post which baseband version I have.
I515.09 V.FC04 / I515.FC05
I believe the FC04 and FC05 are the radios from 4.04 ICS, is that correct?

I've found the forums that explain to me how to flash a custom radio, but I haven't been able to find a thread that explains why I would want to do it. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using a custom radio and what are some good radios for my DInc with CM6.1?
all radios are good in the same sense. Ok basically a different radio can give you better signal or battery life or both. Or it can kill your battery faster and give worse signal. It's a case by case basis and I think mainly where you live matters.. I always stick with the 7.28 radio its been the best for me but its also terrible for some people.

Thanks for the input. I suppose I need to educate myself more on the different radios available because 7.28 doesn't really mean anything to me. If you don't mind me asking, what type of area do you live in that 7.28 works for you but not for other people? Is it the difference between a metropolitan area and a rural area, or is it more specific like better in a certain part of the country or city than another?

It is more of a block-by-block basis. I had an Eris in Chicago *Belmont and Central* and updating the radio helped immensely. But, went 2 blocks east, and lost all signal. Now I have a Dinc running the leaked Evo (11.09) radio, and notice better signal in buildings (Glenbrook South HS)
Also 7.28 is the newest stock Verizon radio. Radios are usually known by the last numbers in the name.. Radios are risky business as a bad flash can brick the phone. I'd read up and hold off if I were you... I'd hate to see someone break their phone its really a travesty when it happens.

If you decide to continue, look for the Official Radio thread under Development. It will give you some more info, and download links if you so choose.
Thanks all!
I've been reading this forum for the past two days trying to see if there is a similar thread with this issue. Please point me in the right direction if there is a similar thread resolving this issue (this forum is colossal!).
I recently bought a UK version GSM Galaxy Nexus running Modaco 4.0.2 Ir8. I'm using it on T-Mobile's network (The GN is replacing my HTC Sensation).
The gentleman that sold it to me had already unlocked, rooted, and flashed it with Modaco. It works blazing fast. The only thing is that when ever I make a phone call it literally drops in less than 5 minutes. The signal seems to be switching like crazy from 3G to HSPA+ as well.
I've called TMO and they have no clue what the issue is (4 different reps told me 4 different things from needing to factory reset to the towers being down etc.).
Again the phone works great besides the fact that I can't make a phone call for more than a couple of minutes before it drops.
Has anyone seen this with their GN? Is it the phone? The Mod? Are T-Mobile's towers not able to pick up this phone's radios because it's from the UK?
How can I go about fixing this (Factory reset? etc.)? I'm literally about to factory reset this thing this morning when I get home from work.
I don't really have too much experience as far as rooting goes but willing to learn and get this issue resolved.
What radio version are you using?
I'm on T-Mobile and xxkk6 works well for me.
If you don't know what you have, I suggest u go to the dev section and start reading for a while
xxkk6 at the least should be on there. i think there is xxkl7 possibly. the xxkk6 is the stock radio, but if there is a kk7 or kl7 might want to try that as it would be a later version.
How can I tell which radio version I'm on and does it give me the option to switch it?

Thanks for sending me that link. Which baseband set up would be good for the US (NYC specifically). They all look like they are designed for European areas.
And once I put in my Sim card, why didn't the phone just figure out with Radioband to attach itself to?

Thanks for the link. After reading through a couple of pages I'm starting to realize that I have no idea what the hell is going on with switching radio bands. Even worse, I have not read about any instances where one or the other will work very well in NYC (my area).
Is there a grid which shows which radio band is for which area? Anyone know of anywhere that shows the step by way to do this?

I appreciate that. Will be looking into it later this morning when I get off work.
For anyone who had to do this process: Is this a normal thing when rooting and flashing, to have to find a better baseband etc.? Is it because my phone is a UK version that TMO is having an issue dropping my calls?
And lastly, anyone know what the best baseband/radio is suitable for NYC? And why doesn't the phone just figure out which is the best baseband?

the baseband should work. it's gsm, the world standard. but i'm guessing since i don't know exactly what is tweaked, but that the specific baseband for your region will bias your phone for the known networks. ugkk7 works great for me. atnt. i think there is a ugkl6 or 7. sometimes you have to test them. some will work better for others. some will work great and not eat battery. if it eats battery, try another one. i think samsung is decent about releasing different radios for different regions. it can be confusing. now when it's comes to updating their roms, that is a different story.
Ok,
The baseband def has to be affecting my battery. I'm getting not even 10 hours on a full charge from moderate use.
I don't really know exactly what the first owner did to it, only what he told me.
My plan is to bring it back to factory settings (found an article about how to restore the GSM version, but have yet to find any youtube videos abou it....I only see LTE videos on rooting and unrooting, and I'm not sure if it's the same process so I'm not touching those).
If that doesn't help it then I'll go about flashing and changing the baseband.
Again this whole baseband business is really new to me. The input you guys have been giving so far is much appreciated.

Update:
Ended up coming home early from work and staying up all morning trying to figure this out. I decided on using this link first: (http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/restore-galaxy-nexus-to-stock-how-to/)
to re-lock. That took about 4 hours of troubleshooting and getting to know the lingo and terminology. Then from a combination of other youtube videos I spent another 4 hours trying to figure out how to lock the bootloader. Believe it or not the Xda link about this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1392310) saved me from losing my mind. I literally didn't go to sleep until I made sure I brought the phone back to factory settings.
After I finally got the phone back to factory settings (believe me, it wasn't fun figuring this out especially when I've never rooted before) I noticed the wifi wasn't working, or had a very weak signal. Content with the phone at least being back on factory settings and locked, I go to sleep and wake up today seeing the same issue with the wifi (mean while, I now have good signal/service...didn't even have to mess with the baseband radio config).
I restart the router in our house and power down the phone and restart. Problem fixed.
Not really sure why or how, but bringing the phone back to factory settings seems to make it work just as fast as it worked when Modaco Ir8 4.0.2 was on it. Except now I have amazing Service signal.
I can honestly state that rooting really isn't for me especially with the notion that with every new mod that comes out you have to be flashing on a constant basis. Even though I almost lost my mind trying to figure this out, I would still rather have this approach vs Apple's walled garden approach though. Any day.
One of the reasons I like the Nexus line of phones is that it's pretty much the only Android phone that gets all the updates first and on a constant basis. Which makes it such an awesome phone in that it's also the phone that Google allows any and all capabilities to be customized. I have true respect for all the devs out there who attack this stuff daily.
Just be sure to get enough exercise in and healthy meals along with rest lol.

some people actually recommend factory resetting your device from the get go. i would, but i always just run with the hardware just to make sure the hardware and stress i throw at it will handle all the roms and stuff. and to exchange my phone if finding there is a problem.

Rooting/Flashing is great IMO for people who will never have the luxury of getting updates like Nexus phones get. Take control in your own hands on when you decide you want to update(s) etc.
I'm sure any Devs out there (like on this forum) also love tinkering. To each his own.

Indeed. I def learned a lesson: Never let anyone ever root your phone for you. The guy who rooted it for me was nice enough to say I could email him for questions but the more I kept emailing him the more I could tell he was probably getting frustrated at all my worrisome questions ("I'm dropping calls", "Is it because of the rooting?", "My wifi isn't working", "is it because of the rooting?..." etc.).
Just glad to know there are tons of available options for one to seek out help when issues like this arise.

Hello!
I've been having bad receptions/signal loss on my GN.
People have been recommending me to update my bootloader, but how do I do it?
1. Assure you are bootloader unlocked
2. Go into bootloader mode
3. Download http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20725207&postcount=2835
4. Double click fastboot-windows.bat (windows only)
5. Done
6. Reboot
And your problem is most likely radio related. What radio are you using?

Bootloader isn't going to do much for signal, you want radio. See this thread and this post
The thing is that I already have the PRIMEKL01 bootloader with the KK6 radio.
How come I still have huge problems with signal loss on 2G/3G?

I still don't understand why you continue to "join" these threads and mention about these absurd debates in previous threads because they honestly really don't help anyone at all but cause drama. But okay.
@OP: Settings -> "More" (under Wireless) -> Mobile network settings -> Access Point Names -> Bottom right, reset to default.
Try playing around with different radios around the forum. See if one of them will prevent the dropping of signal.

I use XXKK6 but you have a bad experience with it. Usually "XX" radios are optimized for Europe. But it doesn't really matter, I live in USA and I use European radios.
KRKL1: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1439217 (Korea)
UGKL1: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1430107 (North America)
UGKK7: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1382699&highlight=radio (North America)
.. also, google "hashtab" and verify it's MD5 hash (do not flash a radio without a MD5 hash provided.. thats my recommendation, flashing a radio without matching MD5 may cause problems but if its not provided then look at user feedback anyway, flash it only if you need to). I suggest you to go back to XXKK6 if you manually updated the radio to verify its MD5 hash.
UG = North America
XX = Europe
K = 2011 (11th letter of the alphabet)
L = December (12th letter of the alphabet)
# = Revision number

More like people here just love to go into other people's threads and cause drama based off a person's personal experience. If it has helped someone fix their problems even though a person doesn't believe it, that doesn't give them the right to keep posting in there to bring the topic out of relevance to what the purpose of the thread was supposed to be.
We're all here at XDA to help each other. Not bash on each other's feelings. It was simply a matter of updating a bootloader, and having a updated bootloader isn't going to make a phone become worse. No damage done, so is it really worth all of this drama and debate? I don't think so.
And I wouldn't want to continue this talk any much longer as I've dealt with it in the past 2-3 threads. Thanks, show was good, but let's move on.
Shoot, I'm on 4.0.2 with 4.0.3 bootloaders/modems, although in a lot of the weak signal areas around here I think I might be better off reverting back to the 4.0.2 modems.
What the other poster was trying to say in a not so nice way is, "Feel free to update your bootloaders. There's no harm that can be done and you may have a slightly smoother ICS experience, but don't be under the impression that it is a solution for making a significant difference in your battery life".
It's not helping to mislead people. Not that anyone in this thread has, but to the new user, there are a lot of things that are misread. New bootloaders and modems probably WILL make the OP's ICS experience somewhat noticeably "better", but they do not solve the OP's desire, which is to get extra battery life.
It's going to be very frustrating for people that think that new bootloaders fixed their problems, only to have their problems "come back" (because unless your original bootloader is just plan trash, your battery life difference is negligible) which will lead to more of the same types of posts that are all over XDA that are chalked full with a lot of opinions and not a lot of proof, which only leads to an over saturation of conflicting information when people use the search function.
But I agree, dude coulda been a little more tactful. And to the OP, flash a new bootloader/modems. It really can't hurt. I'm on Revolution HD which is already fast/smooth, and there are places within the ROM that smoother/quicker with 4.0.3 bootloaders/modems. Also, when you say signal loss, do you mean you'll go from 2G/3G to nothing, or from 3G to 2G sitting in the same area? It's not a fair comparison since I'm on Verizon, but I've had some times where my signal drops for no reason. A buddy of mine's Rezound is that same way, living in the same area, we think it may be a tower issue. Although I do see times where it happens in other places.
What is this 'tact' thing, you speak of?
/me runs off to Google.
I tired to search but unsure if I pulled CDMA 100% or not..
None the less, Im going to move over to Verizon and Im after the Nexus. I see people say the signal is bad etc etc. Im coming from the HTC evo and Ive always prety much ran AOSP roms. As we know ( or us Evo users ) the AOSP roms dont show " full " signal. But it shows actual signal. Is this the issue people are ***** about? IS this what they are talking about, in terms of bad radios etc?
AOSP roms show the true signal, but not a masked/boosted signal similar to HTC phones done, right?
The bad radio rumor isnt a bad radio, just the way AOSP roms show the signal... right?
The bar reading was jacked up a notch in 4.0.4 (2 bars of signal in 4.0.1/2 will show up as 3 or even 4), but the db reading in Settings is still correct (though, read issue #2 below). The phone is fine hardware wise. What confuses (or convinces) people are three things:
1) Some people got duds. This will be very obvious because you won't get signal even in areas where other people on VZ can connect. You need to get the phone swapped.
2) The GN has a weird way of reporting signal strength. They completely over-do the hysteresis, so if you test/compare with another phone, you have to keep the GN in one spot for 10-20 seconds before you get the same reading.
3) Software bugs in the baseband which will crash the radio interface and leave you without data for up to a minute. There also appears to be some hand-off issues that may keep you on 3G when you should be on 4G.
The GN has no worse reception than any other Verizon handset, aside from the fixable bugs in the baseband, which really aren't "reception" issues anyway.
So with what you said, all the apparent issues that are there, are fixable in terms of ROMs or official fixes? I like to tinker with my phone, but not to keep it running correctly, ya know?
Is this issue still reported on the current batch of Gnex's?
I just got my Nexus a week ago, but it has worked perfect in terms of signal and data. No dropouts. My radio is whatever it came with, but my ROM is BAMF Paradigm

Personally, I've had fewer issues with the Galaxy Nexus than I did with the Nexus One (that phone DID have bad reception. Great call quality though) or the WinMo phone I had before that. Whenever I have connection issues, I just turn on and off airplane mode and the phone will come back and reconnect to 4G in ~15 seconds. Nothing serious beyond that.
Some people have had more serious issues, and I can't say if it was their phone or the network equipment used in their area or what. Only way to be sure is to try one out. I have little doubt that ~99% of GN users have little/no issue, but the ~1% that do have problems are vocal about them (they should be, this thing isn't cheap).

ROM has nothing to do with signal. Only the baseband matters.

Actually, if they have updated telephony, it can. For example, there are signal improvements in 4.0.4, but you must run the rom and the radios.
That said, Paradigm has made no telephony changes from aosp 4.0.3.

I was really simplifying things since this was a non-technical question. If you go from 4.0.2 to 4.0.3+, you may have more hooks into the kernel and from there into the baseband, but jumping randomly from ROM to ROM isn't the best way to solve a signal problem. Changing the baseband is the best way, kernel the next, and finally the Android version. Basically go in order of distance from the hardware, noting that each level is significantly less likely to cure you.

After reading hundreds of posts on connectivity issues, yours is the first to bring some lucidity and sanity to the hardware issue. Now someone needs to focus on the BS from the carriers and the inadequacy of their distribution systems.
I updated to jellybean on my VZW nexus and have been dropping my signal a bunch randomly. I just got a refurbished phone from verizon and I flashed it first thing so I don't know if it is a problem with the phone or the stock AOKP radios I have installed. I was wondering if anyone knew if I can use the radios from 4.0.4 on jellybean or not?

I don't know the answer to your question, however...
Got my wife a free Galaxy Nexus from Best Buy last week (verizon)... and instantly had problems w/ the 4g. After a ridiculous period of time at Best Buy to get the phone activated (they tried multiple SIM cars) and her contacts downloaded, we finally left being assured that the 4g problems were due to the activation process, and were told to give it a day or two. I was skeptical.
So we flipped off the LTE/CDMA mode, and went just to CDMA and used 3g for a few days. Called Verizon, they refreshed the network / cleared out the lines (whatever that means), and still no 4g. Every time we'd turn on 4g mode, it would connect, then drop moments later. When it dropped, it also dropped the phone line. After a week, my wife had finally worn me down. I conceded to her that a very very very very remote possibility had occurred, and we had gotten 'a bad phone'. Dear lord, did I want her to go to Best Buy w/o me. But i got suckered (she's pregnant).
So after another 2 hours at Best Buy, a new phone, and a new SIM card... we walked out w/ the same problem as before. Apparently, there's something going on w/ Verizon's latest software version ... our only option is to use 3g for a bit. I called Verizon to try and get some free money towards my bill out of them, and the customer support rep told me my best option at this point was to return the phone and choose a different device. Talk about horrible support.
So now i've come here to pretty much try what i think you'er aiming for... maybe by going to CM9 or CM10, her phone will be able to keep a constant 4g connection... only time will tell.

There is no such thing as "stock AOKP radios." The baseband version is independent of the ROM, so whatever baseband you had after flashing was the exact same one you had prior. The signal drops are a common issue and could be attributable to the fact that there are no JB basebands released for the i515 as of yet.
The issue is with your device and not the radio's or the OS version you are on. Nothing you do will fix it or make the issue disappear. There are good GNEX's out there that do not have the radio problems, it took me three tries to get one.
Don't believe anything else you hear about fixing what you have. It is all BS.
Occam's Razor is applicable here. When the problem is persistent on 4.1.1 and is not present after reverting to 4.0.4, it's a software issue. That's not discounting the ones put there with hardware issues, but the fact of the matter is that signal problems are to be expected for vzw users running JB. We have updated binaries, but until a new baseband drops for the i515, it's not going to play especially well with JB. Such is the price for us early adopters.

I've seen two types of issues on the gnex.
1) 4g drops out and either drops to 3g or 1x for a period of time, in which it reconnects to 3g/4g shortly after. This seems to be a once in a while type issue. This seems to be more radio related.
2) 4g drops and your phone drops signal, period, for that time and then reconnects quickly. Easiest way to tell if its doing that is to check the battery stats graph and look for red slivers in your data connection. This issue from what I've seen is more hardware and I'd suggest replacing the device within your 14 days.

The ongoing theme is it's a great phone other than noisy calls, occasional drops, data signal/connection issues, and fragile glass.
And we're partly to blame. Short life cycles and youthful koolaid drinking consumers enable phone manufacturers to continue to build with a style over function mentality.

My 3rd replacement says otherwise. I have been on JB for 3 weeks now with this device and have not had any issues with 4G.
If every LTE GNEX had the same issue on JB I would agree with you but that is not the case. I wouldn't believe it either until I finally received a perfectly working GNEX. Always thought it was the software but I was proven wrong.

Go here and get the FC04/FC05 radios.
Radios are independent of the ROM, so you can install any radio you want on any ROM. FC04/FC05 are the latest basebands.

His device should already have these radios if he recently received it.
My suggestion is do not play games with radio swapping, keep excahging until you get one that works.
Also, why not restore to ICS first and see that it is your phone and not the software.

My old phone with the blown speaker on the same 4.1.1 rom does not have this issue. I never tried stock ICS, I flashed this phone as soon as I got it. I think it is the phone.
I have the drop issue sometimes but in my case I'm sure its not the phones fault as it doesn't happen at home (only at work)

Running jellybean now, but my 4g has always been erratic at connecting. Sometimes its fine and sometimes it switched back and forth in the same location.
