Team Epic or Official CWM???? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

I just got my S3 and used mskips amazing toolkit to root/install recovery etc. But it seems it has installed 5.5.0.4 which from my knowledge is the modded version from Team Epic. The recovery works perfect minus the backup date stamp. I was thinking may as well upgrade to the official CWM 5.8.4.7 and also get touch. But have read that it has some SD card issues and also the backup stamp is the same as Team Epic.
Anyone know if CWM fixed the issues in the recovery? Also in mskip's 2.3 toolkit I don't see CWM available for the Bell S3 am I alright in just flashing AT&T?
I know it should be fine since its the same device and was the case with my i9000M, but better be safe then sorry.

You should use TWRP. IMO its better than CWM and has more features.

I also like TWRP better. Once I installed it on my Kindle Fire I would never go back. Don't get me wrong CWM is an excellent recovery and CWM touch is great. Its mostly user preference.

care to explain the differences besides the user interface? Why is it better then CWM?

Download the .img from here
http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/104
place it in the root of your sdcard then use dd from terminal emulator (or adb shell)
Code:
su
dd if=/sdcard/openrecovery-twrp-2.2.1-d2att.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18
Thats how i did it (multiple times) and didn't lose my imei.

If I have Team Epic's CWM, and I want to update my rooted S3 from UCALG1 to UCALH9, how would I go about doing that? The OTA H9 thread by drothenberger mentions it won't work if you have Team Epic Recovery Mod.

Just use the latest 6.0.1.4 Touch Recovery from CWM. No date issues and can see ext card just fine. Thats what I used when using drothenberger method.

[Q] Installed Clockworkmod from Market. Same as Odin?

I just rooted my phone using Zedomax's guide and I want to flash the Starburst ROM but I downloaded Clockworkmod in the market. Is it the same as using Odin to install Clockworkmod? Will I run into any issues using Clockworkmod from the Market?
Clockworkmod recovery is what you need to get and it is not available in the market. You will need to use Odin to flash one of the kernels in the development section that has Clockwork included. After that, you can use it instead of Odin for almost all flashing needs.

I got confused with thos 2(rom manager and clockworkmod) but i used the market one to flash backup and restore with no issues.

What you downloaded from the market is ROM Manager from the same person he maintains the official versions of Clockworkmod. It integrates with CWM to allow for easier flashing of custom ROMs and what not. Unfortuantely the E4GT is still not officially support so you will have to use CWM manually for the time being.

Nandroid backup of JB

Is it possible to Nandroid a ROM such as codename android JB or CM10? I tried for codenamed android and didn't quite work

Did it fail when you were restoring the backup? If so, which recovery were you on? Newer AOSP-based ROMS like those use CWM6 which has a new way of creating nandroid backups. If you're using a non-CWM6 recovery you'll need to flash either the ROM or a kernel with the CWM6 recovery and then restore your backup from there.

Thanks I didn't know this either.
Thanks - This is good to know. I didn't realize this.
I was going to give a more detailed explanation but I'm slammed at work. In the meantime here is a link to an article that explains how it works:

That was a great article, good to know stuff. I just installed cwm 6 on my tab2 10.1,the touch version, and it works very well. Was running cwm5 before,. What happens to cwm5 when you install cwm6, do you uninstall one for the other or does it just go over the old version?
Thanks for the info.

I'm not familiar with that device so I can't say, but on the E4GT the recovery is part of the kernel. If you flash a new kernel (by itself or as part of a ROM) you get the recovery that is included with that kernel. It will overwrite the previous one. I believe though that some android devices have a separate recovery partition. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Do you have link to cwm6??

[Q] Android 4.1.1 root?

Hey guys, just got my SIII and I can't tell which rooting methods work on 4.1.1 and which ones don't. They haven't been updated in a while it seems. I'm coming from the EVO 4G where I rooted, installed a custom recovery, and then from there it was just a matter of flashing ROMs through recovery. Is the process similar on the SIII? Can anyone link me to an updated rooting method? Thanks for the help.

Nothing has been updated in a while because the process to root has not changed. The process to root the GS3 is incredibly simple, especially compared to the Evo. I used the Team Epic Root From Recovery.

Used the same guide when I got my phone last month
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
Just bought the SIII for black friday deal and was prompted for the JB 4.1.1 update. I updated and ran into an issue with rooting. It appears when I use Odin to load clockwork mod it works but as soon as I restart it goes back to normal recovery mode. So instead of having Odin reboot my phone I unchecked that option and did a battery pull. Success I was able to boot into clockwork mod. Then I tried to flash CWM_SuperUser_v3.0.7 to gain root access. It all appeared fine in Clockwork mod, but as soon as I rebooted it seems to have broke.
Anyone have any suggestions?
This has been the case since the LG8 update. It has code that will replace the stock recovery if the signature check fails.
You need to follow the Team Epic Root from Recovery method (posted above). You flash CWM using Odin but do not reboot. Do a battery pull and boot into CWM. From there you flash the Team Epic Root from Recovery file. This gives you root but also removes the recovery signature check that is replacing the stock recovery.
So close, I guess I didn't know team epic had a different root for recovery file. Giving it a shot shortly. Thanks!

SGS2 usb Jig on SGS3?

Im upgrading to an SGS3 from SGS2 and am curious whether the SGS2 usb jig will work on the SGS3 for resetting the flash counter?
Nope. You have to use triangle away. But if you utilize the no trip root method and install TWRP from goo manager you will never increment the flash counter.

I've only ever used 4EXT and CWM, am able to install CWM from TWRP recovery? This phone seems to use a different recovery method than I've used. I take it it's not incorporated into the Kernel like SGS2 where I can just flash a kernel with CWM.
I just saw the "Stupid Question" thread where this probably could have been asked so I apologize for starting a new thread for this question.
The S3 does not follow the same method of recovery as the S2. Kernels do not come with a recovery. You have to install the recovery manually. You can either use zips found in the recovery's thread or you can utilize goo manager to install TWRP (menu>install openscript recovery) or ROM manager to install CWM.

Twrp is similar to 4ext and cwm. Use it the same way.
So does this mean that 4EXT is an accepted recovery console for the I747? I have been reading a ton and I see so many people flashing with CWM and no one has mentioned 4EXT. Just wanting to make sure before taking the dive with my favorite recovery software.
Thanks!

Honestly you will be better off with TWRP. I have completely stopped using CWM due to several issues it was involved in. So far not a single issue with TWRP. It's a quick download and install from the market, install the recovery from the app, and your good as gold.
1 thing to remember, as the devices get newer, some methods that you may be used to doing such as 4EXT may no longer be valid anymore.
Got it. I appreciate the quick reply and the heads up. Much props!
Forget about 4ext, it's no longer relevant now that you have the S3. Pick either CWM or TWRP (I recommend TWRP) and move on.
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda premium
As others have suggested, go with TWRP. Used 4ext when I had my Inspire and loved it. However, check 4ext out on the Play Store and you'll find the S3 isn't listed as compatible. Tried CWM on the S3, and had issues, so switched to twrp and haven't looked back.

[Q] Is Rom Manager safe to use?

I bought Rom Manager app and I downloaded clockworkmod recovery version 6.0.2.3 on my T-mobile S3.... I started flashing CM 10.1 mods a couple weeks ago and I just recently read about other people bricking their phones using Rom Manager to flash roms. Is it safe for me to use Rom Manager to flash the latest CM 10.1 updates? (I don't want to brick)
Thanks!

I had read that too. I do know that AOKP threads are using it and everything appears fine. I'm not a CM user so I can't say for sure.
I would use TWRP and goomanager instead of CWM because I have lost my imei twice using cwm recovery

Yeah I heard that. I did a backup of the IMEI and used Terminal dd if= command to push the recovery image without issue. I have always been more comfortable with CWM than TWRP personally.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. When "pushing" the recovery image to the phone you open terminal and do dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img(whatever the filename is of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18 using root.
See my post above about the IMEI backup.
Rom manager is not good for flashing ROMs. I used it to get recovery updated ( from free version ) and flash rom manually.

Hey there, I am totally new to flashing ROMs and have been exclusively using ROM Manager to flash several new ROMs as I try them out to see what I like.
My experience has been very good. I did have a problem trying to flash LiquidSmooth ROM onto my TMO, ended up having to Odin back to stock and then reroot...but I chalked that up to my own stupidity at having not flashed the Gapps, and thereby locking myself out of Google Play Store and other needed stuff.
Whatever you do, just make sure you backup. I even have made and then flashed backups from ROM Manager...so my experience has been good.
Good luck whatever you decide to do
I've been using Rom Manager (across several phones) since it came out, and never had a problem with it. I personally prefer CWM Touch over TWRP, maybe just since I've been using CWM for so long. As far as GooManager.... that thing annoys me to no end. If you're worried about the app causing problems though, I would just download the updates then reboot into recovery and flash from there.

Exactly what I do. Only flash the recovery through rom manager but reboot into recovery yourself if your flashing a rom. If the developer says to wipe, well please do yourself a favor and wipe. Titanium backup will make your life simple as well.
