which should i buy??? - Wildfire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

its time for me to choose my new phone...contract ends this month.....but that doesn't mean willy will go away...its my 1st android device.....i love it more than my motorola zoom or motorola charm or my blackberry !!!
my question is which 1 should i go for???
Samsung Galaxy S III / HTC One X / LG Optimus 4X HD / Meizu MX 4-core
which has the best built quality....and overall quality along with a good aftermarket rom support (most important) cm team or any others....
thanks in advance.....some xpert view please:fingers-crossed:

I'd say go for the S3.
Removable battery+SD card+unlocked bootloader and it has a good dev community.
But the downside is the glossy plastic Samsung used. It doesn't feel that good in the hand. And when your hands are sweaty, the phone gets a bit slippery (get a case )

I agree with all that, the phones with the most aftermarket roms will be the most popular ones, atm I think Samsung slightly has a more popular fan base than all the others and as I've seen from my s2 is very well supported by some of xda's finest so I can see why.......

Well, most of the difference is in the outside housing.
the One X uses non glossy plastic, while the S3 uses this glossy plastic that feels a bit cheap.
I can imagine that with the S3 being a 2012 flagship phone for Samsung, there wouldn't really be any touchscreen problems.

To me the wildfire felt solid and bulky compared to my s2 which feels very light and a bit delicate even when you take the size difference into consideration. I think the S3 is even lighter too......
That said and even with the fact I had two broken usb ports in the first 2 weeks (both came from the same batch of phones though so don't worry about that) I don't think I could go back to a HTC again. Nexus next for me.

Well if you want amazing 3rd part developer support, the Nexus is the way to go.
(I'm totally not biased here *cough*)
And yeah, I was really surprised how thin my Nexus is, just like you said Scratch, it feels bulk now :/

which htc dual core should i go for....as my 2nd best choice after galaxy nexus

Well, the only (correct me if I'm wrong) one with a good dev community is the Sensation I think.
The Evo3D's 3D gimmick is one of the few things that drag it down, since the drivers for it are closed source.
Didn't really check how well the One S is doing.

The galaxy nexus is sort of the equivalent to the s2, what i lack in official Google software support which comes with nexus I make up for with slightly better hardware, camera, gpu etc but we have to wait for official software and sometimes not everything works on aosp without some tweaking....
If you want to save a few hundred quid and have the best software support go for the nexus or for slightly better hardware either s2 for cheap or s3 for the more expensive but future proofed hardware. I'm guessing there will be a new nexus towards the end of the year beginning of next though which will be more like the S3 hardware wise.
If I could have afforded the S3 I'd have gone for that but now I'm a bit stuck as to whether I should have got a nexus instead of the s2 as we don't even know if we are getting an official jb update or not. cm have already cracked jb but still it's nice to be able to say it's officially supported.
I can't really comment on the one series, I've only ever played with one for half hour.

You are right but it has that really sexy black and red vibe and has a stronger battery to cope with the over clock. My only issue with the device is that the kernels that are available have no USB otg support. But aside from that it is a very nice bit of kit and the price has been dropping recently

[Q] galaxy nexus or htc one s?

hey guys, so i got a fido upgrade coming up, should i go with the htc one s (should be releasing soon) or galaxy nexus?
i'm just going to be using it as a daily phone, just the regular stuff. i'm kind of hesitant on the htc phone seeing how the htc one x has so many issues.
opinions/thoughts?
thanks!

I'd go with the Galaxy Nexus even though I have serious issues with the display. There doesn't seem to be anything in the One S that would make it better than the GN. Battery life and camera perhaps?
Personally at this point I'm waiting quite eagerly what will the Galaxy S III be. SAMOLED HD+ perhaps?

Depends what you want.
One s had awesome build quality and feel with the micro arc oxidation body. Super slim with a smaller screen. It had a faster processor but the screen quality is worse. Lower resolution. Sense with less developer support most likely.
Galaxy nexus has a better screen with better developer support and will get jelly bean much quicker

don't think fido would be getting the S3, they don't have much of a phone selection there anyways, usually i just buy phones online, but since i had an upgrade thought might as well decide between the htc and GN.
I'd say go with the Nexus One S.
Or if that isn't available the Galaxy Nexus, best phone on the market even with it's "Uber outdated sucky" specs.
I'm just going to tell everyone to get the device that is NOT the Galaxy Nexus.

I'm very satisfied with my Galaxy Nexus, great Display and Vanilla Android. And of course you get updates much faster. I had HTC Legend and Galaxy S before and was always waiting a long time for newer versions. The camera of the Nexus is also damn quick. I will only buy Google branded devices in the future.

Pick the One S for the specs.
The krait processor is around 30% faster than the A9 processor found in the Galaxy Nexus.
But, if you love Amoled screens and early updates then the Galaxy Nexus is a good choice too.
Both are great phones but the One S is newer, and hence has the benefits of a newer phone.
Three main points:
- Pentaband (I have been on T-Mo for 7 years and have no intention o fleaving)
- Development support
- Largest screen I can get
That means Galaxy Nexus... for now...

The Samsung note has a bigger screen.
Anyways I'd choose the gnexus. Just cause its guaranteed updates. Whereas every other phone relies on carrier to push that to you unless you manually update it and at that your still waiting for a carrier somewhere in the world to give an update. And we all know how good they are at doing that... Unless your going to be using ported roms which just aren't as good as something made specifically for the device. IMO your not going to get any phone a whole lot better than the gnexus right now. Minorly better, but not leaps and bounds. Plus, your getting ics on the gnexus, which makes everything a lot easier, and for whatever dumbass reason, still isn't out officially for other devices on a global scale.
For me it's hard to say Gnex or One S/X. I've got nexus from few weeks and it's Superb, but i never have my hands on One S/X to compare with Gnex. When you get phone with contract by internet/on-line shop you've got 14 days to change your mind. So take Nexus first and try it for couple days, then send it back to the shop and take One S/X and try it as well as Nexus. Then i'm sure you'll find out what is the best "one" for you.
All best.

I'm in sort of the same sittuation, the difference would be the phone is both, daily use and development phone.
So far, the cons and pros I have managed to grab are:
HTC One X:
+ great display IPS2 with better color reproduction and possibly better battery life
+ policarbonate body and Gorilla Glass 2 makes a strong point in quality of construction
+ good camera especially after latest updates
+ Quad core processor which means for at least 2 years the phone will keep its head up
+ Sense UI from the regular user point of view
+ capacitive button's which don't take screen space so the image displayed is trully 720p
- Senese UI from a developer's point of view
- many user seem to have reception problems and with 4.0.4 update, on standby it looses connection.
- Power button seems to be not so convenient placed
- probably slower updates on new Android versions
- for now games need to be optimised for Tegra platform
Galaxy Nexus:
+ android vanilla
+/- pentile superAmoled display
+ power button easy to reach
+ browser and flash seems smother than on HTC
- hardware can be considered old with only dual core processor and same GPU as S1
- camera quality quite bad
- no gorilla glass, but some enforced glass but users complain about scratches easily made
- cheap plastic body easy to scratch or crack
- buttons on screen taking from 720p resolution and it seems that no other company went this
way, both HTC and Samsung are still using capactive buttons
- low speaker volume
- bad battery life, especially on browsing
I really don't know what to get. Difference between Nexus (taken free of contract) and One X (with 12 months contract) is around 100$, in favor of Nexus.

change gnex for one s ?

hey gusy i have the opportunity to change my 2months old galaxy nexus against a brand new htc one s without paying something.
would you change it or would you keep your gnex ?
The only thing that will pry this phone out of my hands will be the next nexus.
Unlockable bootloader, updates from Google, latest software, great developer community, no bloat, first to get new features...
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
Me personally I wouldn't switch. Maybe a one x, but not one s. Honestly I like my nexus enough where I wouldn't change regardless.
The One S is a mid-tier phone, why would you want to do that?
i had a sensation xe before i bought the gnex and know i really miss sense, so there are few advantages of the one s, like the new processor, it's thinner and so on ..
as is sad before i love sense and therefore i considered changing my gnex
Trade for the one s and sell it and then buy a new gnex

Check out this side by side comparison. I had the same dilema too but a pure google experience is reallllllllllllllllly important to me (my current phone is a Nexus S).
My hubby has the SGSii-TMobile and HATES it. He hates the bloatware on the phone. I don't have that problem. He is still waiting for his ICS update. I don't have that problem. I know you said you miss sense but is sense enough to give up a pure google experience? In my opinion... it wasn't. I can't wait to get my gnex, I ordered it today!

This. I don't care if the hardware is better (speaking about phones generally here), if it can't run an AOSP based ROM with full functionality out of the box, then I won't buy it.
Edit: is your husband's t-mo SGSII an I9100, or other? CM9 is very complete at this point for the I9100.

His SGsii is the T989 model. We'll check out CM9. When we rooted his phone it wasn't ready for everyday use yet. We'll try it again and thanks for the heads up.
other opinions ?
everyone says that the pure google feeling is important but i am sure that there will be enough custom roms for the one s like cm9 or just ice cream sandwich without sense ..
that shouldn't be the problem
I am trying to figure out if I should go for Nexus at $400 bucks or One S
"Vanilla is great"....well is just crap, I haven't been using vanilla android for like 5 years now......ANYTHING thats not vanilla android is better, be it CM9, AOKP, Touchwiz, or Sense.
I hate the fact that HTC used another pentile SAMOLED in One S, but in all reviews I read people say its a really good and well calibrated screen (I heard different about Nexus though, would like anyone to comment on this). Obviously design and built quality goes to One S, camera is also better, Sense 4 is a big improvement and without even using it I am pretty sure its great and is based on ICS. CPU without any questions is better, more power efficient, and faster. Then there is BeatAudio (whatever that means) and Bluetooth 4.0, and GPS I think supports GLONASS
My biggest concern about One S is the screen and development.....(not Google updates, those are crap as well until the new OS is out and even then thanks to XDA it can come to other devices even faster then Nexus-brand )

HTC seems to be on the downslope, and Samsung is really taking the lead. I think sense has seems it's best days.
GNex All Day
Personally, I have no real desire to switch. That said, the One S/One X do both look like nicer pieces of hardware than the GNex. While many will rightly point to quick updates and an excellent developer community for the GNex, I have no doubt that the One S/One X will have solid communities as well. HTC's commitment to providing bootloader unlock tools further cements that.
going to check out both devices tomorrow. they will be the same price for me, One S easier to get and exchange if something will be wrong.....

Don't be so sure. As far as I know the HTC Rezound still doesn't have a fully functioning AOSP ICS Rom, so that should give you some indication of the wait on these devices. If you're willing to wait for the updates, then go for it.

^ perhaps, but I would rather even use Sense then Stock Android ......especially Sense 4
now I am on CM7.2, used Sense 3 for a while too.....and Touchwiz
the only reason I disliked Sense 3 is the stupid launcher and if u use other launcher then all widgets become useless as well
With SGN u have better updates. Both have the same power and GN dont have any vodafone, orange, ... influence. And better development support
Im writing this post cause i havent 10. Im new in this forum but not in development Knowledge, and i consider its a stupid rule. Im sorry if i write any Irrelevant post.
Checked out Nexus today....and frankly speaking One S is a better over all phone. Its much thinner, you dont even feel it in pocket, its much better made due to AL body, they have the same 4.3'' usable screen too.
now the screen on Nexus phones i checked out in Verizon, one had burn-in, and 2nd one was a bit off white compared to One S. The 720p resolution is there, but colors on One S seemed better. I also haven't really noticed anything different when watching Youtube or viewing web.
So in the end it all comes out to development and ROM, do you want CM9 or AOKP on Nexus or Sense 4 on One S (maybe later it will get those 2 ROMs as well)

Honest Opinion Guys

Sold my nexus s not too long ago.
After that i have owned a G2X, HTC Sensation, and an HTC amaze.
Once u go amoled, using LCD is painful.
So my question is, would you pick the tmobile galaxy s 2 over the one s?
i am leaning toward the s2(white, screen size, samsung, removable battery/sd), but what about the phone annoys you?, and what can you tell me about the phone that i wont know until i use the phone?
thanks
The one s uses amoled as well.... Except it's a qHD super amoled. I would still go with gs2 because of expandable memory and removable battery. Tmobile is getting the gnote soon as well.. Tough decisions my friend
The main issue in the phone is the screen issues I.e. dark blob spots and screen burns pretty easily you can really only notice the blobs when the screen blacks out and the backlight is on, other than that the phone is friggin bad ass. The only reason I would get the one s would strictly befor the camera. It's prolly thebest camera that's out for any smart phone. Amazing is one word I could describe it. Especially since it records 1080 p video with 60 Fps and ours does 30 Fps

the problem with the g2x, sensation and amaze is that they started using cheap LCD screens that sucked when viewing from angles. The previous phones with LCD wasn't bad though.
Anyways if i was you, I would wait for the prices to drop just a bit more if you decide to go with the gs2. The one S,X should gain popularity soon and the s3 is nearing.

No i would say htc phones have the most support on t-mobile. Look at the sensation, Htc G2 even mytouch 4g. Since hardware doesn't change much. Samsung phones on the other hand less support due to different hardware. So as long as you stick to an htc phone you will be fine on t-mobile.
OK, but does the support compensate for better experiences than Samsung roms developed by people?

wait what? you do realize that htc devices usually gain a swarm of developers right
gs2 is my favorite phone so far after having t-mobile mda, touch pro 2, galaxy intercept, and htc hd7. one of my job responsibilities is hooking up phones to the exchange server so i get to play with lots of phones from different companies/manufacturers. the only thing i've seen that i'd currently take over my gs2 is the galaxy note but good luck with t-mobile getting that anytime soon.
If you care about removable storage and battery no contest S2, or wait for the S3 sometime in June if Samsung sticks to their word. If you want a better resolution screen and faster phone with a tiny bit smaller form factor go with the One S.
Only thing that annoyed me with the S2 hardware wise was the lower resolution screen and the blobs and streaks (edit: and that damn chrome around the phone, scratches before you even hold the phone) aside from that great phone and is now getting some great dev support. HTC One S just released so it may take a bit for support to come, but there is already a working AOKP ROM for it so I'm sure it won't be much longer til support kicks off for it. Either way you're getting a great device

I never really thought about it but this made me think...what about the S II do I not like? I couldn't think of one thing! Its just awesome! My wife has the G2X...its been warranty replaced 4 times in a year. Twice touch screen stopped working, the other 2 beacause of the overheating issues. With the last update they just released for it nothing's really gotten better. Her battery still only lasts at the most 4 hours with moderate use.
I guess this wasn't really your question I just had to vent. Galaxy S II in my opnion is the way to go.

Hi guys, I was thinking about to get this version of GS-II (t989), but i´ve heard so many bad things from the owners that I don´t know what to do anymore... So if anyone could help me on this, answearing these couple of questions, I´d very thankfull.
1) Is this screen issue that big deal?? does it happens only with T989 version or the others GSII were affected also?? Is there anything I could do test the screen before buying one (like putting a fully black, gray, white pics on display...)?
2) How is the audio quality on it? Are you guys satisfied?
3) About the camera, that is something I REALLY care on smartphone, I´ve heard it´s a bit different (some people would describe it a bit "worse") from the international GSII- 9100, due its Exynos chipset. However, judging by the samples i´ve seen, the only difference i could notice is that the colors tend to be yellowish on t989 -as the opposite, bluish from 9100. But how about the rest, focusing, details... are they exactly the same??
Thank you guys!!
PS: I´m coming from an Xperia Neo, and I don´t like its camera that much and the audio quality as well.

[POLL] Would you buy it again?

HTC One X Owners and potential buyers!
Would you buy it / buy it again if you had a choise?
Or you better give a chanse to Samsung/Sony/Nexus/LG/Motorolla?
Or just stay on your old device and wait untill something new arrives?
Definitely buy it again. Right now, it is still king of the market. NO ONE BEATS ITS SCREEN. and since screen is the number one biggest thing we interact and use everytime we use the phone, it is THE MOST IMPORTANT PART LOOOL.
In a whole package and a custom rom, the one x trumps any conpetitor out there as it has the best hardware foundation. GO DEVS GO

About battery: Read this (but we have now with the new base about 6h screen time and its still not officially released...i am not sure that i will use my phone 6h of the 17h i am awake every day)
About external SD: Its a smartphone not a PC, with the 28 GB (user available) i am really satisfied.
About USB-OTG: I am sure we will get it soon

I agree.
I would buy it again because I love the feel and look of the phone,
but an external SD would be nice
all honesty no i would not buy it again... i would go for the galaxy s3 just for the pure reason that the development for that phone is much bigger than the One X. but even though i would not go for another HTC phone i really do love my current one now even after all the issues my phone had
I definitely would. I always felt that Android 2.x was just not as polished feeling as iOS and I didn't enjoy it very much, but ICS finally closed the gap IMO. After that I was just waiting for some nice hardware to come out - high pixel density screen with nice colours (which pretty much barred anything AMOLED, since I've hardly ever seen one that wasn't blue tinged, which really bothers me), nice physical design, and powerful enough hardware to do everything smoothly. The One X is just about the first phone to meet all my requirements. The GNex was quite close as well though, being one of the few AMOLED devices I've seen whose screen I didn't mind, but at the time that the GNex came out I was not ready to move to a new phone yet.
In short, I love my One X. Nice upgrade from an iPhone 4. There's not too much I miss about the iPhone, and plenty of things I love about my HOX that the iPhone just did not have.

How about the apps and games that were on the iPhone 4?
I've also had an iPhone for about a week, and I have an iPod Touch, I love Android, but I'll be completely honest, the Android applications and games can't get nowhere near the level of the iPhone ones, not sure why but every iPhone app and probably game out there is beautiful, it's polished, some of the Android ones are too, but it's being held back by most of the ugly ones.

I think he's saying that you can flash everything to your hearts content but nothing the developers over at SIII will release will make you have the same screen the One X has, and this is the truth, doesn't matter if 1,000,000 developers group up to develop a ROM, the screen will stay the same .

There are only two games that I miss from iOS. Rhythmatic, and Strategery. There are a few other apps I couldn't find Android equivalents to but they were apps I hardly ever used anyway. Anyway, I still have my iPhone around, so I can use it as my mobile gaming device/iPod and use my HOX for texting/calls and Facebook/Twitter/etc. (iPhone could do it as well I guess, but I only have one SIM card, which is obviously in the HOX).

I usually don't play 3D games on my phones, never really got into the on-screen touch controls, I just hate how my favorite game Drop 7 looks DISGUSTING on the huge screen of the One X, if I could only normally play this game everything would be perfect.
I played it a few times. It was graphically quite impressive for a phone, but I didn't really get into the gameplay.

The HOX was my second choice device, my first choice being the HOXL (the 32GB intl version) but as for as I can tell it hasn't been released yet ans I am pretty happy with the HOX especially since the 2.05 rom base which is much smoother and responsive than the 1.2x base

Handset upgrade

Well, I've just read an email from my carrier stating that I'm eligible for a contract/phone upgrade in 20 days......
This has set me thinking.....what would I upgrade to?
I've always liked the S2, and now that the S3 is available, the contract costs for the S2 are beginning to fall....
On the other hand....I can't just bin my W.....I've spent a lot of time and done a lot of research to get it running as smoothly and as up to date as it is......and there's still more I could do.....
So what would you guys do? What would be your ideal upgrade phone?
WOULD you upgrade if/when the time comes?.....
sent from my CM10 turbocharged Wonder despite what Samsung says....it's all good..
Choose the S2 or maybe the Sensation XE or any other Htc sensation phones... I always like htc
.. Dunno for you..

My reccomendations would be the S2, because it's a epic phone, with epic hardware.
U can get dozens of ROMs for it, and it offers excellent performance.
The comparison between S2 and S3 is display, processor, and GPU, so my reccomendation would be Samsung galaxy s2, because the price of S2 is much more lower than S3, and and the power u get in S3 is not that huge compared to S2
I personally dislike HTC, they'r good, but overall not as good and smooth as Samsung is.
S2... Get SyahKernel! I heard it has dual booting capabilities...

If I were you I'll thinking to get a new phone, and that is a galaxy nexus because I love unbloated google stock and I don't sell/spare my galaxy w because I love this small community and I'd like to see how our community has grow up, there's many new devs here now, we now had many ICS rom, two AOSP rom, lot of JB's and two stable base CM9 and CM10 by our master. i don't even think to sell my phone for now
-sent from my awesome phone-
Echoing @hotheabilly, whatever new phone you choose, don't ever think of selling the W...
Honestly, the W's community, in my view, is more creative and daring compared to others. Undoubtedly due to the W's severe limitations, but the W has taught us all to persevere, because we all know that it's "the little phone that could."
I personally have invested so much time familiarizing myself with its 'soul', that if ever the day comes when I have to part with it for good, perhaps when it has become so old it can no longer turn on because some parts are broken and replacements are no more, I'm sure I'll be feeling a great sense of loss.
As to S2 vs S3, you'll have to ask yourself if the larger screen is worth the price of fewer cusROMs... the S2 has existed for quite some time that most of the myriad cusROMs for it are practically stable; you *truly* can choose a ROM that fits your style without having to worry about stability.
And the money you save by choosing the S2 over the S3 can be repurposed for useful accessories like a Targus capacitive stylus, or a capacitive glove (either are especially helpful when you need to touch your phone's screen during very cold weather).

Pepoluan....I totally agree about parting company with this phone......
The W is my first smartphone.....it's also the first piece of tech I've ever played with and tweaked.....
When I found out (before I joined XDA) that Samsung intended to leave it behind at gingerbread, I felt cheated and disappointed.....I soon changed my mind about this little phone when I discovered XDA...
I'm in no hurry to put this phone in a drawer. Even if I do upgrade (likely to be the S2) I'll probably put a PAYG sim in this one and keep using it......
I used to visit FB on a daily basis, but now I'd rather visit this forum.......even though I've never actually met/worked with/spoken to any of the members here, I'm more comfortable here than on FB....so even if I do upgrade, I'm not going to turn my back on this forum.....

i would suggest S2 or Galaxy Nexus
everybody know how nexus is being golden kid of google
both phone also got big support of devs on their respective thread which is also plus point to consider

Nexus 4 if the option is available
That awesome feeling when you receive update directly from google....
And the benchmark score is comparable to Galaxy S3 too

Go with the Galaxy Nexus. I've used various phones from various manufacturers, I'd say the Galaxy S series come last. It has the most clunkiest and laggiest UI (TouchWiz) compared to HTC and Sony. Regarding S3, it's like Samsung removed Project Butter on purpose from its Jelly Bean update.
If you don't mind less customization compared to the Nexus, get an Xperia T or One S.
If you wan expandable memory instead of being stuck with a tiny one like in the Nexus series go with the S2 or S3. Don't bother with any Nexus product unless you hate expandable memory.
Yeah...I keep hearing that touchwiz is laggy.....though that doesn't really matter anyway...
If I do upgrade, whatever I upgrade to probably won't be running stock for more than about 5 minutes anyway......
sent from my CM10 turbocharged Wonder that proved Samsung wrong...

This!
I had been drooling for the Nexus 4, but when I found that it has no MicroSD slot... the drooling stops.
The LG equivalent is waaaay beyond my budget.

Try Sensation XE though it is nice and have lower budget than the s2. And it is almost as good as s2 with the dual cored 1.5 ghz. With 768 ram it's quite nice.
But if you love samsung and doesn't want to move to other brand well s2 is better. But definitely go to s3 man. Craving for that badly but sooo expensive.
The sensation xe it's nice on the upper hand of wonder. Try to search it in the google and compare it with s2
Nice nice phone for my opinion, because i can't afford for s2 as i really wanted because of the price

Yes absolutely a great phone and there are a lot of great dev and such just like arco and the rom is awesome
Galaxy tab 2? Not to bad at least. Look at the bright side you have bigger screen than mine at least right?

If I were to change my handset, most probably I will be going for the middle or upper low-end phones. As the reason for rooting one's phone is to unleash the phone's potential.
When I first realized that SGW is under the legacy and low activity device section, I was a bit disappointed. Nonetheless, this forum has actually bring our phone to a whole new level.
Considering that you buy a high end mobile phone. The after effects of rooting your phone doesn't really give you much satisfaction as compared to SGW.

help
anyone can help me.. i already rooted my samsung galaxy w but still 2.3.6 version.. then i tried to change my kernel version to [email protected] but my wifi is not working. where can i find the original kernel of my phone? pls. help me or sent me a kernel file to my email.. thanx a lot..
I would upgrade to a S3 since it seems pretty good and I tested one in the shops and it feels fantastic to use. Honestly don't get anything in the Nexus series of phones cause no matter how good they look and seem, it lacks a MicroSD slot for expandable memory and its a wonder why anyone who likes watching movies or listening to music and especially gaming would get one.
