Hello guys!
I just recently bought a Defy, I'm very pleased with it,
but theres something's that driving me crazy,
Searching on this forum, most people claim that they get the best gaming performance with CM9.
I have tried about 5 different roms so far, Miui, Cm7, Cm9 and Cm10 -> with and without Chainfire, with and without chainfire plugins, with and without overclocking, froyo and gb kernal.
so far Chainfire only vastly degraded my performance, probably because it enabled HD graphics, my best benchmarks are without it.
Cm7 i am getting 40 FPS on neocore and ~2000 on Quadrent.
Cm9 getting only 28-35 fps on neocore (Tried only Epsylon builds so far).
Miui GB getting 36-38 fps.
Realworld I am using Nova 3 to see if it is smooth or not.
So, why are people saying they get the best performance with CM9? What am I missing here?
Thanks in advance!!
Sorry for the bump, but over 300 views and no one has an answer????

I gave my Evo 4G to a friend and i've flashed a couple different sense roms for him to try out. Would going to a rom like a CM7(.1) give him a noticeable performance increase for games like GTA III or other 3D rendered games, and possibly better HDMI Mirroring performance?
I thought GTAIII would run like a champ on the EVO4G, but its not. Phones currently running the Swagged out Stock. But it is pretty choppy, so is counter strike.
Normally I would just flash the roms myself and see, but since it's not my phone I dont have that type of access to it.
Any input is appreciated.
Salvage mod (rom) g0dm0de kernel and chainfire3d is the best combo for graphics intensive games if its not going to be used as a phone stripping the messaging app and other items such as calculator and stuff like that will increase the available ram to improve performance
Edit: overclocking to 1.19ghz will help as well, the problem with games like gta3 is the available ram when the phone is booted is only around 200 MB or so on an AOSP ROM and less than 200 MB on a sense rom and that's really not enough ram to render the graphics with the gpu in the evo
Great suggestions. Bummer to hear that GTA III probably doesn't have a good chance of running smooth on the Evo. Definitely was going to over clock. I know that helped me on the PSX emulator.
Im going to look into salvage mod. Sense roms seem to be less reliable. and I believe HDMI mirroring would work smoother too.
Thanks for the feedback, really great to hear someone speaking from experience.
Salvage mod is one of the lightest ROMs around its not real fancy but removing alot of nonessential apps from it will free up more ram making the game smoother chainfire3d will accelerate the graphics as well helping to improve performance
like title says, does anyone have multiple pics of quadrant scores from roms, custom and stock with custom kernel??
I want to know wich ones are fast, stable, and able for dayly use without minor bugs
Bro the quadrant score doesn't help you. I have 2600 with 940 MHz but games were laggy (CM7.2), that's why i came back to stock.
I believe this benchmarks are just bulls**ts.
Now im on stock 2.3.3 (which came with the phone first time, original one for my country) and lol, it's fast, smooth and better than other stock roms/custom roms.
As LegoGabi said. A higher quadrant score doesn't mean better performance in games.
I've tried these:
CM 7.1
CM 7.2
CM 9
in which CM 7.2 (with the latest patch) is the most stable.
Great rom for daily use.
I think it's CM7.2
im using CM7.2 and score is 2000++ in quadrant advance
i think the CM7.2 with patch4 is the more fast and stable for dialy use
With Cyanogen mod 4 noobs I got about 2k without overclock And it was like 2.5k with overclok to 900+
For me, it's CM 7.2 with 2000+ pts, as well. Although, you cannot use the "performance" governor all the time.
Hi,
just sharing a thought. In our galaxyW we experience reboot issues while playing heavy games like "waking mars" in stockROM, while we do not experience this random reboots in CM9/CM10.. but still if you check, the default memory consumption is somewhat same.. somewhere around 210-240MB in both StockROM and CM9 based ROM (remixICS). Why are we not experiencing reboots while playing the same heavy games in ICS? ICS is heavier than GB, still we do not get random reboots.
So, i think this reboot issues has something to do with the kernel. We still don't have a decent kernel for GB based ROM's/Stock Roms. Now, you may ask why sticking with stockROMs while we can use ICS. The reason is camera quality. I find camera in GB much better than CM9. Is there any good developer who can give us a decent modded GB kernel for our beloved Galaxy W?
+1

Try using Cyanogenmod 9 the latest build. Thats what I'm using and if anything the cameras bettter. Here's the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1576874
Hope this helps

until now i can't feel the difference between using kernel or not

ICS in fact is slightly heavier than GB. But more stable too, in fact, our device is more perfectly fit for ICS than GB in some ways.
ICS's stability itself is much more worth than GB. And most games are now optimized for ICS not GB or JB(yet).
As for kernels, different kernels allow different hardware acceleration and processes, such as our RAM and how our CPU works. Custom Kernels have better governors(as suggested by most) compared to the original. These kernels allow better gamings, and different resource allocation for our device to better fit needs.
I hope my explanation helped a little, do press thanks if it does.
Hey,as the title says, does anybody experience stuttering, like little freezes, using franco's kernels? I don't know why my phone does that, cuz this kernel is the best(not for me sadly) I only experience this with stock and franco's kernel,I tried many roms including stock from google images.I also tried not installing any app,but this isn't the cause of the mess.So is there anyone dealing with a sluggish phone on franco's kernels?

if you say its the best, but not for you, then is it really the best? remember, the best kernel is what works for you the best. try trinity kernel, or try various other set ups with franco kernel, like rasbean jelly rom, or other governor configurations.
I think I tried all franco kernels configurations this far...faux is working verry well for me...the only thing is that my phone overheats too much...like 70-80 °C at 1.3 GHz when playing games.
For me I get crappy performance in games such as NFS Most Wanted, Dead Trigger (lags even in medium settings), also get 20-30 FPS on Quadrant, so changed to Purity Kernel, everything works great, all tests are 60 FPS on Quadrant
Every phone is different. I have seen many people have a love vs hate relationship with Franco Kernel. He does a great job for stability. I didn't experience any stuttering with his kernels but didn't have the best luck with battery life. Was maybe average for me at best. I had good luck with Tiny with no issues what so ever. I was loving lean as well but then starting getting wifi and data drops with low battery. Test each kernel with your device and run for a day or 2 so it settles with your ROM. Good luck!

try trinity kernel
I want to try Trinity too what is the lastest versions without SoD and other issuea? I saw that those are frequent issues lately:-/
I've decided to unearth my Xperia Play for some emulation (N64 and PS1). It's currently running Aurora Play 1.1, a GB based rom if I recall correctly. I have not used it for about 1.5 years, and was wonder what is the best rom now with the greatest performance with emulation for N64 on Mupen64Plus AE and PS1 on ePSXe. My phone antenna is broken so I will not be making any calls or texts, the device is purely for gaming/emulating.
I'm open to GB, ICS or JB roms but the touchpads need to function perfectly with no lags (I remember trying ICS roms and there was lag whenever the pads were used). Thanks for everyones feedback, I look forward to see what ROMs people are running and do the same things I do

High-five for being an Aurora Play user.
To my knowledge, for perfect functionality and performance, GB roms are still the best. Aurora Play is a little outdated now, especially that version, although there haven't been many fantastic advances since that rom was made in terms of GB rom performance. Vokal's GB to KitKat rom (something along those lines) is quite good, whilst I've not used it personally it was a damn good alternative to AP (better in some ways too) back in the day - I can only assume it's gotten better in the past year or so. I recommend giving it a shot.
I don't personally recommend any other Kernels aside from Doom and Wedges Kernel's to be honest - any others have originated from theirs anyway, and if they could've made them any better than they were they would've.

Thanks for your reply. I spent the last couple of days trying various ROMs. Tried xElite Gamer 2.0, but for some reason the touch pads were not functioning, as well as a couple of other ROMs. I've ended on Gin2KitKat which is what I think you're mentioning + extremekernel r3. That kernel interested me with its extra VRAM and higher OC if I needed it. This is perfect, the ROM is super fast and it almost managed full speed PPSSPP with 0 frameskip on Burnout Legends (and some games it does run). N64 is also great, SM64 runs full speed. On the previous ROMs, it gave me some stuttering sounds but that is totally not present on this ROM. I expect that the results with PS1 will be similar.
Yeah that's the one I was talking about. Nice one.
I have to say though, not so sure on the vram thing. Nice one anyway lol.
