Stock phone going through reboot cycle - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys
I have a stock unrooted Desire HD which a friend borrowed from me & he gave back to me broken. Grrrr!
Basically what is happening is when you power on the phone, everything seems normal at first, the phone boots up, the HTC logo appears for a few minutes as it's loading & it brings me to the lock screen as normal.
When the phone is unlocked, however, the HTC logo appears again & the phone reboots, repeating the cycle all over again.
I've tried to factory reset the device to no avail.
Are there any suggestions on how I can get this phone up and running again?
I did want to root it & flash another ROM to it, but from what I can remember (i have another Desire HD which I rooted a year ago) the phone needs to be working in order to install the required software to root it.
Any help would be very greatly appreciated

Well, I would try to do a full wipe first (thou you have already done a factory reset). Then, I would try to flash a ruu, if that is not working, you can run the Kit from fastboot choosing that option, but of course you have to make sure that you have no hardware issue of the phone could end up useless.
What did he do to end up like that??

Hi glevitan
thanks for your advice. I have no idea what he did. He lives overseas and was visiting here so I gave home the phone to borrow while he was here.
Then when he went back home a few months ago, he gave the phone back to me & I haven't powered it on until now. So I haven't had a chance to ask him.

[Q] Bricked htc desire

Hi all,
I'll give a quick outline here then go into more detail below if you need it. i've tried things suggested in the other bricked htc threads but none seem to work.
I've basically follwed the root guide at droiden, made a gold card and rooted my htc desire phone which went ok. problem was i then installed the suggested rom in the tutorial which was for an amoled screen but i 've got an slcd screen (i'm thick).
The upshot is my htc desire will only start up sometimes and when it does just goes to a loading screen with a bright colourful x then switches off. holding volume down and power or back and power doesn't bring up the boot menu or fast boot. i've tried to flash from one of the ruu.exe files but it just keeps saying my phone has less than 30% charge (it doesn't) and quits the ruu. Is there any way to recover my phone via another method? I've got the coldcard used to root the phone.
Many thanks
Detailed description
i've basically followed the guide to root here at droiden
and installed the rom here de frost rom it suggests.
rooted fine then i flashed the rom (the de_frost one suggested in the tutorial) - got stuck on a colourful X screen and now won't turn on. it'll only turn on if i connect to a pc and open unrevoked but then it just boots to the colourful x screen until it goes off and then i'm back to the begining.
going off that other thread it sounds like i've used the amoled rom when i've not got an amoled screen.
to make matters worse i've followed these two steps here in other threads on here which suggested a new ota or ruu. ota wais a broken link and with ruu.exe i get an error saying my battery is below 30% (it's not) and so it won't go any further.
are there any other options available to me to restore my phone bearing in mind that volume down and power doesn't bring up the boot screen (just white htc screen then colourful X screen) so i can't even do a hard reset that way. Not bothered about wiping the phone's memory just want to get it back so i can start from scratch with the right rom. i have the gold card used to root the phone.
any help appreciated - thanks.

Needs to be a gold card if your phone is network branded
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
ok i did it and it worked first time - it let me get to the boot screen but then after it rebooted it just won't switch on at all now.
any ideas?
Did you let it run till the phone booted?
Take the batt out for a min and pop back in and try. And also make sure you got a good charge
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
yeah it said it was rebooting but then never came back on. i'll give it a good charge and try again.
right it will now turn on everytime but won't go to the boot screen. Volume down power and back power just start it up and it sticks on the loading screen with the x for hours.

i'm not too sure. i bought the desire from ebay. it's an orange branded htc about 2/3 months old. i followed the root guide here (can't post full links as i'm a new member- just stick a www dot infront of)

and install the radio & rom here

ok for some reason after 24 hours of trying it will now let me go into the boot screen
for some reason i left the room and came back and it's working.
i've no idea what has happened.
it's completely debranded and rooted with a basic rom.
can someone advise me of a good stable rom which will work with a slcd screen?
many thanks
Best Rom I find is MIUI takes a bit to get used to but you will love it if you miss the clock just download fancy widget .. for the HTC clock and weather. just Google it and get the.apk

hmmm. can't download anything from the android marketplace. just says download unsuccessful.
for any who has the same problem - think it was a schoolboy error. when it sticks on the x screen the options must be in the background. press volume down then press power and it boots.

boot loop - probably bricked

Hello,
I wanted to debrand my htc wildfire s, and after many unsuccessful attempts (main version older) following other tutorials on the forums, I finally went to this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1162971
Followed it step by step, everything was as expected until the flash in the end finished and the phone, instead of booting, entered boot loop.
Now when I try to boot it or to enter bootloader, the backlight turns on for a second, turns off after that, then again turns on for a second, off... and etc. It doesn't even show the HTC screen. When I turn it off and connect it to usb - it charges.
I am already assuming the worse, but if anyone has any ideas, it will be great, as this is my girlfriend's phone and I can already see the tears in her eyes when she understands the phone is dead... :'(
Can you get the phone into hboot?
Pull battery,
then put it back in,
then hold volume down and press power while still holding volume down
If luck is on your side you should be in hboot
Unfortunately I have tried that already - still the same backlight on / off / on ... loop. :-/
Try battery out, back in, connect USB, then try to boot into bootloader. See if your PC picks it up. If it does try to issue the fastboot command "fastboot reboot recovery" and see if it goes.
Also does it vibrate when its having its flashy seziure?
sent from my android powered beast!
Hi,
Thanks for the suggestion. Tried that also - unfortunately - no vibration (qualcom diagnostics seems to not be the case - unfortunately).
Connecting it to usb brings the orange "charging" light for a 5-10 secs, after that the phone tries to boot and enters the bootloop again.
I think after 5 HTC phones, I will finally have one matching my avatar... :'-(
Hmm. Does the PC pick it up at all?

I am probably going to go buy a new identical phone today afternoon...

Whoa, I wouldn't be so hasty. Try taking your old one to a service first, it'll cost you a lot less
@johnnyspritz
I am thinking about sending it back to repair, the phone is still under the 2 years warranty. However if they find a way to read the contents of the boot or system partition (JTAG?), they might have some arguments against applying the warranty :-D
Hi Simaka,
Like you my phone is in the same boot loop....
Can't access to Bootloader, no HTC Logo.
I have try to contact HTC, but the mail they send me was out of context ....
If you find any solution, please share it ;-)
Hi, for sure I will. For now I will try to return it in the shop where I bought it as it is still s-on and locked bootloader, so they might agree to take it back. I checked the possibility to buy JTAG connection equipment, but it amoints to 150€ with shipping, plus probably a month or 2 of troubleshooting...
One interestimg thing to note is that during the procedure described on the link above the current rom version in misc.img before editing it was 9.9.9.9
I believe this was a way of artificially imposed restriction so any attempt to update would fail...

So I think I am pretty much screwed, any help appreciated

Recently switching from a iPhone to HTC One X I was absolutely loving my new phone for almost a month. But all of a sudden yesterday the screen stops working. It simply does not display anything. But the touch screen still works, and phone works too(if i swipe i can hear the phone unlocking, press home it vibrates, etc, basically phone is working, but display is not). This is not the first time this happened. It happened 3 days ago for about an hour and the screen started working by itself after the hour. But after the last time the screen stopped working it hasn't come back on(i was hoping it would, but it has been 2 days). Also i feel like I should mention this, both times the screen stopped working i was using Nes.Emu(a NES emulator). The screen didn't turn off suddenly, at first the screen stopped responding, stuck at like an image. I noticed the phone was working even then, but the screen just wasn't responding. After that i locked the phone and the display went dark, and hasn't come back on since. I even boot into bootloader and it still wasn't working.
Now i wont get any warranty as i unlocked the bootloader thus voiding the warranty. Currently have ARHD 6.1.0 rom on it. I have no idea what to do. I was guessing somehow going back to stock, then relocking the bootloader before taking it to HTC, dunno if they'll do it under warranty. But thats not my biggest issue. I am travelling South Asia this summer(bought the phone from India), and basically dont know how the hell do i even give it to an HTC support center, cause I'll have to come back to the support center to pick it backup and i wont be in any place that long.
Tried holding the power button for 30 seconds?
try running an RUU that matches your cid/sw version (1.29.XXX.11).
Look here for the RUU that matches your sw version. Don't forget to flash stock recovery and run fastboot OEM lock before you run the RUU.

Will running an RUU that matches my CID return me to stock firmware? I thought that only updated the Hboot or something?
Yeah, it also re-locks the phone.
Its worth a try. Can you not even get the bootloader up? Poer button + vol down?

Yeah, I assume i can get into bootloader since the rest of the phones works fine. But the screen does not even work in bootloader. I will try doing what you suggested, but kind of hard without the screen.
It sounds like Hardware fault rather than software.

Yep, but i want to be on default software with a relocked bootloader before i send it to HTC. Since you're a Docomo user i'll assume you're from India. I was wondering if you have any idea about HTCs service in India? How much time do you think will it take them to sort this issue out?
Can't you use recovery mode and restore a backup?
Before you start with the emulator again you could test for a few days without it and see how your screen responses?
Other things you can try is flash a different rom?
Even return to stock is an option to investigate?
Reading your story it doesn't look like a hardware failure but more as a software bugger.
Just a taught.

Yes, it returns the phone to the stock state. RELOCK before using the RUU. Install the correct stock recovery before relock. A link to stock recoveries are in the cwm thread.

That's all you need.

Thanks for the offer iTeeXDA, but i managed to get back to stock(using nandroid backup). The issue seemed to be that i had named the folder of the backup rom(no spaces).
Now what should i do next? I imagine i should be reflashing stock recovery right? Then relocking the bootloader? Will i run into issues cause i came back to stock from a nandroid backup?
EDIT:So, ok, i went back to stock recovery and relocked bootloader. Phone keeps booting into hboot after i relock bootloader. I've unlocked the bootloader again and the phone seems to have booted
If u can't see anything then HTC people also won't be able to see anything..so go ahead with the phone as it is..n as somebody has already told u that they will be replacing your board the firmware is gonna be gone anyways..I guess I am correct here ...

[Q] Weird issues after applying factory Kernel

Firstly I am sorry if this has been covered in the forums - however I did not bump into this query or issue yet nor was Google able to find anything like it.
A few months ago I attempted to root my HTC one x by using the HTC One X AIO Kit.
It did not work - the phone stated it was Rooted however I was unable to run any custom roms or specific Apps. It wasn't causing any issues and the phone was running stable though so I left it as it was.
A few weeks ago my provider released out a new update that would fix the consistent issue I had with Data over 3G but since the phone was rooted it would updated it for me.
So after searching around I figured "why not just factory restore the phone and apply the Stock Kernel (2.6.39.4)
That was this morning... since then the phone has been stuck in a boot loop.
Tried clearing cache and tried a few different walk through to get it up and running but to no avail.
I managed to get it to boot into the phone however I get no reception, no Wifi, unstable, and once reset will once again go back into a boot loop cycle.
Does any one have any suggestions on what I can do to fix this issue?
At the moment the phone is not being recognized by the PC by USB as well.
Thank you Developer Gods.
*UPDATED*
Well looks like its hard bricked!
FML - New lesson learned I guess.
So your phone won't turn on at all now?

Try going into fastboot
Well its got be bloody confused.
It wont turn on and then sometimes it does and goes into the rom.
Rom is unstable though, doesn't pick up sim card - Wifi goes bonkers. In other words its corrupted as hell.
Go to charge it and it says it charges but doesn't (4% it sits on - leave it for an hour come back 4% is still there)
So there might be hope after all in getting this back up and running.
Scouring the net and forums now for something similar but nothing so far.

Tried that as well just now since its somehow booting.
But again once in, cant flash it and PC still doesn't pick it up so I cant run any tools.
Also connect it by USB cable and it looks up in fastboot. Disconnect the cable and its fine again.

OTA update leads to HTC logo stuck

My brother got HTC Desire 816 a month ago.
He found OTA Update and he installed it and when phone was updating he noticed that phone stuck on htc logo.
He keep waiting for almost hour to see if it is finished or not, but ???
Well i am using ATrix 2 and i suggested him to go to recovery and try for system restore. But still no luck.
Phone was above 65% and wifi connection was proper that time. I don't know what went wrong?
I Google regarding this and searched in xda also, for same, but i didn't find anything helping.
Can any one help me regarding this.

This is the second case so far I came across that has issues with updating OTA on HTC desire 816. May I please ask whether it was rooted and xposed module installed ? If not, the only way is to look for a custom rom or else, install the custom recovery (if your brother can manage to boot into fastboot mode) and restore from the cwm backups floating around in xda. @jithumon has the indian backed up version, which will allow you to get your phone back alive, if not already is.

Yeah! he was able to go to fast boot mod by pressing volum and power botton. He also managed to hard reset. But no luck. Fiinally he returned the phone to ebay. He will be gettiing his phone by 5th september (hopfully). The thing is phone is almost new (~1 month old). So neither he noe I wanted to take chance.
