Battery Life after new rom - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Hi everyone
I just installed the Darkside 3 #8 - with all the steps outlined but am finding the battery life is BRUTAL - barely getting 8 hours out of my phone.
Does anyone have suggestions on what I can do to get the phone working through the day?
Does the phone take a few days to "get used" to the new ROM to allow the battery to settle down?
Thanks in advance!

I have read that turning your 4G off when not using your phone helps battery last longer. I have not tried out though. How long ago did you install the Rom? I know you have to let it sit for a couple days to get the full battery results

Thanks for the response! The phone has been on the new rom for two days - I will wait a couple of days to see how it goes!

You also may want to try to determine the cause of your battery drain using a couple free apps from the playstore. I suggest using GSAM battery monitor and CPU Spy.

Thanks Rod3 - I have installed GSAM I will see if there is an app thats killing my battery.
I restored apps via titanium, I am wondering if I should have just done a a fresh install.

i dont like to restore apps with titanium, has caused issues in the past befor. Why dont you try reflashing and installing your apps manually (my opinion. and see if it persists, have you tried calibrating your battery?

You can try infamous 2.8.6 rom. Out of all the ICS roms I've tried so far, this one gives me the best battery life.

I had a similar issue on the same ROM but V7. I just put up a post a tip thread on how to improve battery life. In no way am i trying to hijack your thread, just trying to help people track the problem down. I get 17 -26 hours of battery depending on how heavy i use it.

No problem. I don't think your battery is fried, calibrate your battery and take some ideas from my thread. oh by the way, i personally avoid widgets, its like a constantly running program.

Just an update everyone! So I got so frustrated that I clean installed the Infamous 2.8.6, no restores, charged battery to 100%, callibrated, etc
and the battery seems much better - it looks like i might actually go a whole 11 hours without a battery charge.
Thanks for all your help everyone!

Darkside v8 gave you bad battery life? Hmm.. with the le1 modded radio this rom has given me they best battery life yet. I was only about to charge to 56% yesterday. Phone went 18 hours... oh btw eugenes battery saver script helps ALOT. Phone sleeps like a hibernating bear.
This is where I'm currently at

Any time you flash a new ROM you should give it a few power cycles to get everything settled, and calibrated, typically around a week of use.

Hey guys I use plume for twitter and I noticed its using over half my battery are there any other twitter alternates that are easy on the battery?

Agreed.. CPU sleeper is a huge saver. Darkside ROM has been AMAZING battery life. Setcpu on badass, juice defender ultimate.. easy 24 hour battery life WITH a functional phone. I've been sold. Also ANKER batteries are legit. My 2 more than fulfill my needs.

Is battery calibration necessary?

How important is battery calibration using the apps in the market? This whole past week has been a flashing frenzy I'm sure for many of you, without a real break to calibrate battery before you flashed the next newest release.
I've lasted the same rough battery life without wiping batt stats, using a battery calibration app or cycling to 0% and all seems fine, so I'm wondering what the importance of it is.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk
Just use the phone and charge the battery as needed. These batteries don't need calibrated. I have 3 and charge them all differently and they all get the same type of life.
But when you flash a rom be sure to give it time like 2-3 days before you judge battery life sometimes old battery stat files stick after flashing so make sure you calibrate these batteries as least once a month.
I use Battery Calibration everytime I flash a new rom... Isn't that what we are suppose to do?
Yes u should calibrate.. for example using stock roms for weeks I never calibrated.. got 16 hours. Flashed juggernot and beast mod got the same battery life because I didn't calibrate.. after running beast for 2 days I did my first calibration and a day later I was pushing 30 hours on one charge.
After u flash a new rom or kernel you should calibrate

Wtf? So what's happening? Is my phone ACTUALLY going to zero or its assuming i've hit zero after (X) hours? Once I calibrate, the phone should know that I haven't burned as much as it thought?
And this is after EVERY rom flash? Gets tedious?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk
Okay, no wonder why. Thanks for letting me know!
You're just calibrating efficient usage of power..
If you're battery is used to giving crappy life even on a great battery rom it'll drain quickly

Clockwork mod recovery. for rooted devices, power phone off, hold volume up and down then with power button and release when you see the Samsung logo.
You must have installed clockwork recovery to have this work, find instructions in the Android development sections.

Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
Screw calibrating and screw wiping battery stats. Use your phone as you normally do and battery life will maximize on its own with a couple charge cycles anyways. If you have battery life issues its much more likely to be an application, rom or kernel issue.... when all else fails then look to calibration or wiping of battery stats.
If you don't agree then feel free to waste your time calibrating every time you flash a new rom.

can you tell me where you bought your batteries from? I've been looking on the web (ebay) but there's so many varieties and the prices differ widely from $10 for 3 to $40 for one. i don't want to spend too much money on extra batteries but i also don't want to get a cheap one that will mess up my phone either.

Bad battery?

I have had some issues where my phone won't wake up so I have to pull the battery and when it reboots the battery drops like 20%. Is this a bad battery or what causes this?

what rom are you running? if i remember correctly there was an issue with one of the roms but i cant remember. but I do remember it being an older rom that did that.
as for the batt. % i get that all the time even when i reboot..tho i get a bigger drop in % when the batter is lower.. like if i was at 50% batt power.. reboot then i would be like at 20% batt. power.. but it would stay at 20% for a really long time till it caught up with it. and sometimes the batter % would rise up a bit. but eventually start to go down again.
But maybe I have a bad battery also.. so im not sure...lol

I had the exact same problem my phone would constantly reboot and shut itself off then I would lose half my battery % I thought it was the battery too so I returned it to stock and took it to sprint they looked at the phone for 2 hours and said there was absolutely nothing wrong with it or the battery. So I took it home and re rooted using Qbking77's latest method the one that does not give you the yellow triangle and I have not had one reboot or sleep of death since and the phone just runs soo much better now so I think it was a bad root for me. I would try re rooting with the latest method and see what that does for you. Also ya out of curiosity what rom are you using because I have heard similar stories from people running the ICS leaks.

I'm running caulk's fc07 1.1 with the repacked kernal. It happened to me before on GB while also running caulk's rom but it only a few times. It seems to happen more now. Here is a screen of my battery
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA Premium App
I believe this would happen more in most recent ROMs because everyone is focusing how fast we can run it or how long we can use it. In either case, there are lots of tweaks and mechanism to make it fast and last long.
For the battery life, there is some background process monitoring unnecessary processes and kills those or tweaks to less frequently monitor the status. So, if the process which is related to battery life is killed, next time when it wake up, it may detect the different life time based on current Voltage or mA. I'm not an expert in this area but it's highly possible scenario. Tweaking the system brings lots of good things to us but in the other side, there could be some
side effect.
If you want to verify this theory, you can just compare the non tweaked rom versus tweaked Rom.
Be sure that you don't run any battery saver apps on non tweaked rom to measure it correctly.
Attached is my last screenshot yesterday after I removed the battery saver app. Currently I'm using Calk's Stock Rom FC07 (non tweaked version). Based on my test, the battery last longer than when battery save app installed and running.
Cool I didn't know that would be an issue. Well I'll try that thanks for help
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA Premium App
Also a note... with my experience anything to do with 3g service... I can kiss my batter life goodbye... if im at 100% battery life.. and i have 3g on... it will last around 5 hours and its dead

Why don't you make a list of each rom you want to try, then take the time to flash each one and run each for about a week. Since battery life and performance is directly related to each users set up and personal style of use. This way in about 4 or 5 weeks you can actually make a determination on your own as to what is best for you.

In the middle of the graph, it goes from red all the way up to ~85%. The green bar below the graph also shows how long it's been charging which is DEFINITELY not 30 seconds.
best battery life is very subjective to the user. and remember that the display on this phone is power hungry to say the least. i hope that very soon all phones will come out with non removable batteries. people that need extra power can carry a portable power pack instead of an extra battery. and for those who complain about the longevity of the battery have obviously never used a phone with built in battery or done their research and are simply relying on that crutch of being able to swap the battery just because they can.
WOW...anyway....my point when i started this was that no one can tell you what works best for you...you have to figure that out on your own.

So your phone magically regained battery life?
You can clearly see the green charging bar in the middle, not to mention the fact that battery graphs don't go up by themselves.
I was using BlackICE 37 w/ the newest Air Kernel for a while and was experiencing some really good battery life!
I then tried Slim ROM with the same kernel and the battery life was ok...I'm now using the Samurai Kernel and I'm liking it!
Sorry no screenshots, but I have had 17hrs at 50% (about 7hrs were standby cuz I was asleep and didn't plug my phone in to charge over night!)

is in fact what I would do with this thread is to gather a bit 'of screen and then publish them on the start page so as to assist new users in selecting the ROM according to their needs, then of course every result will be based on usage of 'but if you can get many statistics can make an average of everyone!

Battery life after Jelly Bean Update

how was your battery life after update . my was suck drain very fast
I don't know how most people got better battery life, but mine worse, not extreme, but noticeable worse.
Android system and Android OS takes second and third place, which on ICS I barely see their place on top of battery usage.

Download an app from the play store called "CPU Stats" and see if the CPU is under serious load when you're not doing anything. If it is, you may have the same issue I had which was that the media scanner was getting stuck in folders that had a lot of files in them. My idle cpu utilization now hovers between 8-30% on core 1 and core 2 stays sleep for the most part.

If you're rooted, look in system/bin on the root directory and see if you have a file named gsiff.daemon (also do the same for qosmgr) If so, add .bak to the end of it.

I offloaded my Titanium Backup folder to my PC & deleted it from my phone plus made sure to get rid of any corrupted pictures (aimed at the 0 bytes ones). So not only is my battery life better, but the performance is also much better because the CPU(s) aren't really doing anything until I actually use the phone. Note that this is an issue I've only had w/ Touchwiz Jellybean and never had it with CM10 or any AOSP based rom. This is a bug that Samsung/Google really needs to get on top of because I'm sure that a lot of people are having this problem and don't know how to fix it.

My battery life has been amazing
This was after the weekend. Friday Morning I charged it and then I was off I went to work. After I went to a party didn't charge my phone. Woke up in some girls room. Still surprised I had more than 50%. I didn't go home that day and everyone had an iphone so I couldn't charge my baby. Wake up go home and I had this much and I was like wow holy sh**.
Stats: I had a little over an hour of talk time and a little under 2 hours of screen time.
Yeah I know why is battery life good if you don't use the phone but dude seriously I had a GS2 and drainage on standby was so bad. I like that they improved standby battery drainage this was beautiful. I have the latest Stock Jelly Bean. Rooted, debloated myself with stock Kernel. Might add a new Kernel but don't really need to this is just great.

How did you fix your issue?

I was having this exact issue and fixed mine by copying my external SD card contents onto my desktop and then reformatting my sd card. After that I just transfered my old pictures and videos back to my card.
For people who are having poor battery life, the best thing you can do to help others help you is post a screen shot or at least write down what is using your battery and how long you have screen on time. When I was having my media issue it was obvious when looking at the battery usage since my cpu was constantly awake. Just saying "i have poor battery life" really doesn't explain much at all.
That would explain things... I had my media scanner get stuck and take down my battery a couple of days ago... after a reboot though it was much better... Though I should have let this run longer on battery just to see how long it would run.
Ok so since the JB update it seems my battery has been draining a bit faster. I've tried turning off sync and all the other normal stuff but it doesn't seem to help. Here are my stats and the slight lapse on the time line was when I was in CWM doing a nandroid backup.
I don't think that you can compare yours since you did a backup, that always drains the battery more than normal use would.
Well all I can say is its normally like that. I pull my phone off the charger at 7 am and by 4pm its usually at 10% with maybe an hour of on screen time. I'm just trying to figure out why it dies so much quicker than what most people are posting here. I try to keep everything closed and off and I've frozen all the bloatware.

Seems about normal for me, typical business day.
look at your "awakes" as apposed to screen on. theres a lot of avticity happening. use greenify if youre rooted. and perhaps consider buy the donation package so you can greenify system apps. it helps a ton.
Uninstall Google play services update. It killed my battery yesterday fast.

For me none cause I use dark themed apps. So I don't update till the Dev does. But play services is causing major battery drain. Overnight my phone used 2.2%. When play services get stuck ur at about a 28 - 46% loss overnight

This is on 4.3 darthstalker rom 6.0 compulsion kernel 9.0, barely any wakes compared to 4.4.2
Don't see any need to downgrade to kitkrap.

Canadian version 4.4.2
I flashed a 4.4.2 rom from Canada (bell) also I installed Telus and Rogers, but on the 3 roms battery sucks. Before flash a Canadian rom, I flashed this leaked firmware from Mexico (telcel) and the battery life was amazing, but the problem is telcel have too much bloatware and it's pretty ugly, So in changed rom to a Canadian that doesn't have bloatware or any things like that, but Idk why battery sucks on this rom!
FYI @ OP, your TW Kitkat isn't like a real Kitkat rom. It's got hundreds of Samsung crapware services running down your battery & eating up space. The title isn't really accurate, it's not Kitkat that sucks it's TW Kitkat.
Also see the thread about awesome battery life in the TMO Samsung S4 forum for real gains in batt life regardless of which rom. GApps (specifically gtalkservice & checkin) suck down the battery unless you tame them.
KitKat on T-Mobile same problem on two new NOte 3's, battery killer and crappy wifi stability. Now on 3rd Note 3 with jelly bean and no issues.

When you take the phone off a charger it may not really be at 100%, despite what says the phone says it is at. It is quite common for the phone to be below 100% and fairly quickly change its status to what the real battery level is.
After 11 hours... Android System is at 24%

always surprised at people who don't charge when sleeping.. When I am sleeping my phone is always charging.
Example of the phone correction of the battery after removing from the charger. Phone says at first it is at 100%, but that is not real...
I was not using the phone at all during that time.
I get great battery life. I also use Jedi ROM too.

I always do but it is also great to know when ur sleeping so if your phone. If phone dies 22% then during the day you gonna loose a lot of battery life cause of a rouge app.

Man, I definitely need to get my Note 3 fixed with another rom.
I used to be happy with the battery performance but now I'm just upset and angry with this ****.
My phone doesn't even last a day for me.
