Can Nexus ICS email client coexist with S3's? - Galaxy S III Themes and Apps

Hi Everyone! I'm new to this forum.
I've been using a Galaxy Nexus for a while (unrooted).
Recently, switched to a verizon Galaxy S3. The phone is unrooted and I hope to keep it that way.
One complaint I have with the S3 is the font size of the email inbox listings.
I really love to use more of that screen real estate to display more text like the client on the Nexus.
I read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1760741 and few other threads here using
the Search function about alternatives and possible solutions.
I also found this very helpful thread by AndroidFan4
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1728308
But the instruction replaces the stock S3 email client and the phone needs to be rooted.
Is it possible for me to install the ICS Nexus email client like an app while keeping the original S3 email client?
Is it possible for me to do above while unrooted?
Any possible downside of doing above?
Thank you all... this is my first post and I hope I did it in the right place.

No it replaces it.
What exactly is it you want? I cant understand how you're describing the issue. Ans what exactly did you want to keep that the google version doesnt have?

Thanks for replying....
In short... I'm hoping to install/run the email client from Nexus/ICS as an installed app (is that possible?)
Maybe even running it off inside the /sdcard folder?
I'm just hoping that by doing that... I won't have to have my S3 rooted and I dont mind keeping the S3's native email client around.

When you try to install it it says its a system app and it will replace. I'm not sure what would happen if you're not rooted. But you could easily swap it if you were rooted.
What is it about rooting that puts you off?

It's a company phone... and technically not my property...
It will replace the system app? It will do that even if the names are different?
So if I renamed the Nexus email app to EmailNexus.apk or something..would it still replace the SecEmail.apk?

You can rename it what you want. The system does not take account of what the apk is actually called.
For example:
SecEmail.apk - Samsung modified email
Email.apk - Android standard email
Both are known to system as "Email 4.0".
Like on a windows computer, you can rename dropbox.exe to sponge.exe but when its installed, windows still knows its dropbox. If you had dropbox installed and tried to install sponge.exe, it would want to modify, repair or remove it as it is already installed.
Hope that helps you clarify.
There are 3rd party email clients in the play store. Maybe they would be worth checking out.

Exactly the answer I'm looking for.... that clarifies my question.
So either 3rd party, wait for update or just root + ICS Email.....
I'll think about it....
Thanks again rootSU!

Stock android email apk

Hi, anyone know if its possible to replace sense email with the stock email app?
Reason is using exchange with the sense one enabled security for the phone, meaning I need a password to unlock which is stupid. I understand needing security but why not just lock that email account rather than the whole phone!
Anyway the email app on my Nexus One doesn't have this issue, anyone know how I can pull the email apk out and replace the sense on?
Thanks
There is an alternative. There is an app available for free on the market place which removes that password prompt. I can't remember the name of it but search this forum as it's been mentioned before.
you can't replace it yet, but you can certainly install the stock one. I have it hosted on my webspace
http://rhedgehog.com/apk/email.apk
EDIT: forgot to say, remember that this will not work with the HTC Sense mail widget.
great. Would be even better if it could handle attachments. Is it possible that the quickoffice and pdf viewer are tied to htc sense and not to native android?

Lockpicker, from the market (developed by one of the forum members, iirc) will disable the password prompt, as mentioned in another reply. I use it and it works a treat.

I used this mail.apk on my HTC Droid Incredible and it works perfectly.
HTC stock Sense Mail client does not bring in any of my emails, at least not for my company on IMAP settings.
Hi all,
I applied this application to HTC Sprint EVO none-rooted with stock Android 2.1 and it works.
This stock email.apk allowed me to resolve problem with HTC Mail for Android Version 2.00.0037.195459 not having "allow all certificates" option required to be able to Active Sync if you use self-signed certificate.
However, this version does not seem to support Exchange Calendar.
Does anybody have newest email.apk from Android 2.2 which works on 2.1 ?
They claim support for Calendar and GAL, but I don't want to upgrade to 2.2 just to get email app upgraded.
Regards
Ivan

[Q] No decent Email client for EVO?

All I want is 1 email client with a combined inbox (like Blackberry). I've tried every option available. I use gmail for personal Exchange for work.
Sense client is terrible and can't do combined inbox or push with gmail.
CM6 Email.apk doesn't word wrap for some reason so everyone has to scroll right to read my emails (even shows like this in my own sent items).
K9 doesn't support ActiveSync Exchange (NO idea why not, it is otherwise perfect).
Touchdown looks like crap and only supports 1 Exchange account (no combined inbox) but it has a ton of functionality.
Droid X and Galaxy S native email.apk are pretty awesome (at least better than the Sense one) but no one has ported to EVO yet. I've tried getting the apks but they do not install, even when deodex'd. It's pretty crazy that HTC gave a Froyo update but didn't bring any of the stock Froyo functionality sense we are still stuck with Sense 2.0...
Have you tried flashing the Email.apk from those others instead of installing them?
hmmm. I will have to do some research to see how to "flash" an .apk. I guess it has to go into a zip file with a certain file structure.

Yeah exactly but if you use clockwork recovery you can flash a unsigned zip..When I was using another gallery i used the zip attached to flash it in clockwork. you could use that as a template.
How about GeeMail? I haven't tried it yet, but I see no reason it won't work.

I have the donate version of ROM manager so I flash between clockwork and RA often. I'll give this a shot.
I'll also look into GeeMail. I'm willing to try anything.
It looks like GeeMail is a desktop application for gmail. I don't see any android versions...?

AIR isn't available for Android yet. I know there is a beta but I'm not sure GeeMail is a solution anyway as it seems to only work with gmail, not Exchange.
Perfect solution would be K9 adding ActiveSync Exchange support but I can't figure out from the google code page if or when this would happen.
A good runner up would be getting the Samsung Galaxy S/Captivate client ported over to the EVO. I have a few coworkers with the Captivate and the client is great.

I really miss my Moment email app. I snagged the apk off of the Moment, but when i try to install it I get "application not installed".
This app can do multiple inboxes and exchanges.
We really need a good solution for evo. I'm surprised more people aren't complaining about this. I guess not many people use gmail and exchange?

Something needs to be done for sure. I have two Exchange mail servers that I need to connect to. My moment did that flawlessly. My iPad can do it since I jailbroke it and ran a teeny tiny app.
I got the Evo ignorantly thinking that this was standard for Android email.
I really hope someone figures out how to put the Moment email app on the Evo.
If anyone needs the apk to do that I'll send it to ya.
i came across this recently. i have not yet tried it.

Have you tried emailing the k9-mail developer and asking them to include exchange support? I've found most developers I've emailed are happy to receive suggestions on their apps. Couldnt hurt.
Isn't Active Sync something that requires a license from MS? I assumed that was why K9 didn't have it included.
I definitely want to see a better mail solution. Using exchange and gmail I have to keep two icons on the desktop to be able to go to an inbox. this should just be unified.

[Q]Email Client

I'll be honest and say my experience with the S2 so far have been pretty poor, the entire android experience feels quite fragmented but I guess that's what you buy into, anyway the question.
It seems like the messages and email app are some sort of Samsung concoction rather than stock gingerbread, maybe this goes for the phone app aswell...? is there anyway I can just rip this samsung meh off and replace it with the stock stuff for the moment until I find a combination of stuff that works or write something better?
Si
have you tried one of the other email clients from the market?
my sg2 is due to come tomorrow so cant comment, but I would recommend k9 mail or enhanced email from the market
I got Profimail its the best email client ever trust me download it and try the trial if you like it register it i have been using it for 7 years on different devices its solid trust me here is the link below

I might be the only person to think like this but Samsung's email app is much better than the stock one imo, same goes for messaging and phone apps. Samsung did a good job with these. That said, if you only want to run stock stuff, why not have gotten a Nexus S? Samsung's stuff is designed to work better with the hardware in their phones and a lot of it is hardware accelerated (like the browser).
I have used K9 Mail for about a year. Its far better than the others and allows for many more configuration options. One can add PGP by installing APG from the Market.
A manual is here:-

I'm quite liking "Enhanced Email" at the moment.
It seems to bypass the pin number requirement policy that our IT guys enforce when setting up Exchange email. It was driving me nuts having to enter the pin code everytime I turned the screen on and off. I can now use the standard lock screen or pattern unlock whilst getting my work email as well. Nice.

samsung dive apk? . You need to go to accounts & sync in the settings menu, create a samsung account then log into that account via your pc
www.samsungdive.com
I suppose you refer to this: http://download-apk.blogspot.com/2011/10/apk-default-samsung-galaxy-s2.html
Look for all the apk's related to Samsung Dive.
By the way, I read (I think around this forum) it is not possible to install apk's from stock room in AOSP custom roms, so if you have CyanogenMod or MIUI its probably not possible to go back to Samsung Dive. There are other options anyway .
Hope it helps.

2 fast and easy questions

Question 1: if I buy an app, lets say tasker, and then i want to install that app to my girlfriends phone.. Would it be enough to restore the App from my titanium copy? Or will it say her phone does not have the license? Is this possible and legal or i gotta buy another app? Seems unfair if I have to...
Also even if not possible for my gf to get the App will it be possible for me to install it in my tablet?.. Using the same google account or could I use another account? Need to clear out this
Question 2: little tutorial for tasker?, i want to do something, im from south América meaning my phone and keyboard (i use swiftkey x pro) are in spanish, but in xda for example i only write in english.. And its annoying the typo corrector since the keyboard its in spanish and every word i type its redlined.. So i Wonder if with tasker i could do something like change swiftkey lenguage to english when i open xda and when i close it, keyboard goes back to spanish

Definitely not legal to just pull the .apk and move it to another phone that didn't buy it. Obviously there are shades of grey here (it's just your GF's phone) but technically you shouldn't be doing this.
If you use the same GMail account and use that as the "Play Store" account you're signed into on both phones, then you should be able to re-download it on either device once it's purchased. This would work best if you each have your own GMail account for personal use, then a "shared" GMail account for app purchases. Otherwise, you'll each have access to the other's emails, contacts, etc..

Your apps are tied to your Gmail account, plain and simple. You can have 5 phones running all with your same Gmail account and have all your apps on each.
But you can't give paid apps to other accounts. And I don't think there is a way to switch accounts that I've ever heard.
Sure you can just pull the apk and give it to someone, hacking, but not officially.
Ok so thats clear now... But no1 is answering my second question about tasker :S
