[Q] No decent Email client for EVO? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

All I want is 1 email client with a combined inbox (like Blackberry). I've tried every option available. I use gmail for personal Exchange for work.
Sense client is terrible and can't do combined inbox or push with gmail.
CM6 Email.apk doesn't word wrap for some reason so everyone has to scroll right to read my emails (even shows like this in my own sent items).
K9 doesn't support ActiveSync Exchange (NO idea why not, it is otherwise perfect).
Touchdown looks like crap and only supports 1 Exchange account (no combined inbox) but it has a ton of functionality.
Droid X and Galaxy S native email.apk are pretty awesome (at least better than the Sense one) but no one has ported to EVO yet. I've tried getting the apks but they do not install, even when deodex'd. It's pretty crazy that HTC gave a Froyo update but didn't bring any of the stock Froyo functionality sense we are still stuck with Sense 2.0...

Have you tried flashing the Email.apk from those others instead of installing them?

hmmm. I will have to do some research to see how to "flash" an .apk. I guess it has to go into a zip file with a certain file structure.

Yeah exactly but if you use clockwork recovery you can flash a unsigned zip..When I was using another gallery i used the zip attached to flash it in clockwork. you could use that as a template.

How about GeeMail? I haven't tried it yet, but I see no reason it won't work.

I have the donate version of ROM manager so I flash between clockwork and RA often. I'll give this a shot.
I'll also look into GeeMail. I'm willing to try anything.

It looks like GeeMail is a desktop application for gmail. I don't see any android versions...?

I tried replacing the gallery.apk with the email.apk from the Galaxy S and flashing this with Clockwork. It does not seem to have worked but Clockwork didn't show any kind of error or tell why it didn't work so I was unable to see what happened.

It is an Adobe AIR application. You just have to install Adobe AIR on the Droid.

AIR isn't available for Android yet. I know there is a beta but I'm not sure GeeMail is a solution anyway as it seems to only work with gmail, not Exchange.
Perfect solution would be K9 adding ActiveSync Exchange support but I can't figure out from the google code page if or when this would happen.
A good runner up would be getting the Samsung Galaxy S/Captivate client ported over to the EVO. I have a few coworkers with the Captivate and the client is great.

I really miss my Moment email app. I snagged the apk off of the Moment, but when i try to install it I get "application not installed".
This app can do multiple inboxes and exchanges.

We really need a good solution for evo. I'm surprised more people aren't complaining about this. I guess not many people use gmail and exchange?
Swyped on my EVO

When I got my moment I just based off my email to my gmail.

Something needs to be done for sure. I have two Exchange mail servers that I need to connect to. My moment did that flawlessly. My iPad can do it since I jailbroke it and ran a teeny tiny app.
I got the Evo ignorantly thinking that this was standard for Android email.
I really hope someone figures out how to put the Moment email app on the Evo.
If anyone needs the apk to do that I'll send it to ya.

i came across this recently. i have not yet tried it.

Have you tried emailing the k9-mail developer and asking them to include exchange support? I've found most developers I've emailed are happy to receive suggestions on their apps. Couldnt hurt.

Isn't Active Sync something that requires a license from MS? I assumed that was why K9 didn't have it included.

I definitely want to see a better mail solution. Using exchange and gmail I have to keep two icons on the desktop to be able to go to an inbox. this should just be unified.

Stock android email apk

Hi, anyone know if its possible to replace sense email with the stock email app?
Reason is using exchange with the sense one enabled security for the phone, meaning I need a password to unlock which is stupid. I understand needing security but why not just lock that email account rather than the whole phone!
Anyway the email app on my Nexus One doesn't have this issue, anyone know how I can pull the email apk out and replace the sense on?
Thanks
There is an alternative. There is an app available for free on the market place which removes that password prompt. I can't remember the name of it but search this forum as it's been mentioned before.
you can't replace it yet, but you can certainly install the stock one. I have it hosted on my webspace

EDIT: forgot to say, remember that this will not work with the HTC Sense mail widget.
great. Would be even better if it could handle attachments. Is it possible that the quickoffice and pdf viewer are tied to htc sense and not to native android?

Lockpicker, from the market (developed by one of the forum members, iirc) will disable the password prompt, as mentioned in another reply. I use it and it works a treat.

I used this mail.apk on my HTC Droid Incredible and it works perfectly.
HTC stock Sense Mail client does not bring in any of my emails, at least not for my company on IMAP settings.
Hi all,
I applied this application to HTC Sprint EVO none-rooted with stock Android 2.1 and it works.
This stock email.apk allowed me to resolve problem with HTC Mail for Android Version 2.00.0037.195459 not having "allow all certificates" option required to be able to Active Sync if you use self-signed certificate.
However, this version does not seem to support Exchange Calendar.
Does anybody have newest email.apk from Android 2.2 which works on 2.1 ?
They claim support for Calendar and GAL, but I don't want to upgrade to 2.2 just to get email app upgraded.
Regards
Ivan

Have used this myself to get push Hotmail

[APP] Updated 6 June, 2011, improved Email.apk (Gingerbread)

What is it? Originally this was a direct extract of the Email.apk from Nexus One 2.3.4; but the most recent update uses a bug-fixed version extracted from CM7. Primarily because the text prediction bar works in this Email app; while it seems to be missing from all the SGS Gingerbread Email.apks.
Update November 3: I have been using CM7 and don't see myself switching back... CM rocks!!
Update June 6: New version extracted from CM7 nightly that appears to really fix the problem where Exchange email accounts stop syncing, requiring a reboot of the phone. I've been using this build 4 days without sync problem. Relevant threads HERE and HERE
As far as I know this will only work on a Gingerbread ROM. Install via CWM. The installer will attempt to ERASE your emails and email account settings from your phone. This keeps the system from getting all goofed up due to database incompatibilities between Email.apks (Thanks nitr8 and styxx!)
I tested this under Juwe's ROM v4.2 and under Darkys 10.1 against my office Exchange server. It seems to work great.
I am not a developer by any means. What I've posted here is something hacked together out of nothing more than dumb luck. (Really, all I did was extract the APK from the CM7 nightly and modify the menu xml files to link to APK internal PNG images rather than linking to the phone framework PNGs. No actual program code changes were made by me.) If it bricks your phone and your hair falls out... sorry, but don't come crying to me. You have been warned! If this app doesn't work for you, please post anyway so I can laugh at you... Errr... I mean, so I can try to help you.
May 8th update: Some of the menu icons were not showing up properly. Spent some time with APK Manager and figured out how to add in the missing icons.
looks fun
ive tried this and it looks good and works well. The major issue for me as with all the older email apps is there is no "Move to folder" option..... which absolutely drives me nuts. I had it until I tried using the TAB email app, then tried going back but keep getting this same apk and am missing this option. Its a real pain!
Funny, I didn't even notice the "Move to Folder" option was absent!
For me the text prediction was a huge issue, and it was really my only motivator for trying it out. I'm very happy with how quick and responsive this app is. With the stock app I would get lag at different times, especially noticeable when deleting multiple messages. This Nexus version seems to delete them instantly. I also really like having the check-mark boxes present on the message list.
I haven't tried the TAB email app, are you saying the move-to-folder option is missing from the TAB version as well? Have you tried the SGSII Email app from this thread?
good plan
the option was there in the tab email app and also in the newer one of the galaxy but I cant find the apk for that! that'll teach me to back them up! I'll have a look at that thread anyway and see where it leads. Thanks for your work and your assistance.

It doesn't look significantly different. There are check boxes along the left edge of the message list view so you can quickly select multiple messages for deletion, otherwise it looks pretty much the same. The big difference is in how much more responsive it is over the Samsung client, and the fact that the keyboard text prediction bar works when using this email client.

There was a misunderstanding : Samsung app has a different landscape mode.
quick noob question. do i have to wipe anything before flashing this? I'm guessing no but want to be sure.
You need to flash the ZIP via from ClockworkManager, and it will attempt to wipe your email accounts to prevent force close issues due to email database differences between the Email.apk versions.

Thanks for posting this! I was killing myself trying to figure out why autocorrection and word prediction wasn't working on my gb rom. I installed it on my captivate running a gb rom (Serendipity VII). It works very nicely for me.
New version _actually_ seems to fix Exchange sync problem.
Thanks for the update. I had trouble getting it to connect over a good 3g signal, but it did so when I enabled wireless for the first sync. I hadn't noticed the synching problem but might not have used it long enough to see the problem. All seems to be working. This app is much nicer than the stock samsung email client in virtually every way. It is much more polished and easier to use. It would be nice if it didn't clear settings when updating over itself, but that is not a big deal.
It's a bit confusing in this thread, but I take it that this apk also lacks Move To Folder? That's a seriously useful feature and it might drive me back to stock on my Incredible just to get it back. Then, of course, I lost the ability to create private appointments in the calendar! Whee. Have you found a version yet that has this feature?

O.K. I tried it, and it doesn't work. I believe that the "mail sent" sound has to be in the systems folder to begin with, and it can't be added by a mail client. For example: The "sounds" settings in my wife's iPhone have a new mail, and a sent mail category. You can attach ringtones for each. The SGSIII doesn't have this format(in stock, anyway), and i probably would have to root, in order to add the "mail sent", to the sounds file. If i'm wrong, and i hope that i am, please let me know. Thanks for any help.
P.S. After using a MacBook Pro, and an iPhone for so long, i just got used to hearing that sound when i sent out an email or a text msg. I guess that it's a "comfort" thing.

I wouldn't go with stock email app, esp considering I keep changing ROMs every now and then. Having a non stock email app takes your dependence on the app that's bundled with the ROM every time you change it. Plus stock email is kinda very low on features compared to many free emails apps out there.

Exchange Mail App alternative?

All,
The default LG G3 Mail app is kinda meh....I hate the fact it does not allow me to view 'ALL EMAILS' under one, instead I have to manually toggle through my sub folders. I came from HTC One M7 and their mail app was the best I've used.
Can anyone recommend me other alternative that is not Touchdown? I hate the old looking UI of Touchdown.
I'm trying Nine Mail App now...so far so good? Any others?
Thanks!

I like AquaMail, but agree Cloudmagic is good (just hated the UI on Cloudmagic myself - specifically that it felt like I was wasting my huge screen because the app elements were huge themselves).

If you can get the stock KitKat email app to work with Exchange it should be a great option. Much of the same interface and goodness as Gmail, threaded emails, etc, etc. My problem is that I have now tried two phones and at least 5 custom ROMs (on my HTC One X) and I have never been able to get the stock KitKat app to work with Exchange. I have tried CleanROM, Viper, Paranoid, Cyanogen, ASOP, as soon as the OS is 4.4 or newer Exchange simply does not work. Things work with the 4.3 Email.apk and Exchange2.apk but that does not have threading. Yes, I have tried all sorts of posted workarounds, Exchange2Google.apk from various sources, etc, no luck. There are numerous threads out there from people claiming to have this problem. Must be a Google screwup because the Samsung, HTC, and LG OEM apps have absolutely no issues with Exchange under KitKat.
If anyone knows of a workaround please PM me or just respond to this thread.

Just suggesting,
I've had a lot of headaches trying to make my exchange work on android.
Auto settings never worked for me, i had to manually type the server user password and such.
My problem was that i was not typing the domain before username.
Im pointing this out because LG email app has a domain field and stock email app doesnt.
So what I do is I fill domain\[email protected] in username field on stock email app, and i use pod51015.outlook.com on server field. And it works like that. Server might be different for you.

Yeah, I have seen numerous people suggest that as a workaround but it has never worked for me. Perhaps the email server is not correct, I need to go talk to the IT guys. The annoying part is that the phone vendor email app always successfully auto-configures. It seems that everyone except Google has figured out how to do this correctly.

Well, I finally figured out how to make the stock kitkat 4.4 email app work. You can first let something like the oem email all run, then go look at the settings a day then manually reproduce them in the kitkat app. In my case I needed to specify the server as webmail.company.com and select the "all certificates" option.
However, it appears that I was wrong in my claim that the stock kitkat email apk threads. That is not the case.
Nine actually looks quite good, and just when I was wondering how they can afford to give away such a sophisticated polished app I noticed that there is a silent 7 day trial, after which it is pay to play. Seems to be worth the $10.
1st impression of Nine is very good. Paid for the $10 license less than 10 min after installing it.

It does look very good and the support is incredibly responsive. There is a bit of mystery Engrish in the menu items and some of the settings and UI are far from logical but that is a small price to pay for the functionality.
Do any of these apps integrate exchange emails into appointments on your regular calendar automatically?
Also I'm looking for one that doesn't make me put a ridiculous password on my phone.

Nine allows for this. Exchange and appointments into regular calendar. You are given the choice of applying security at the app level instead of the device level. So you only have to enter PIN when opening the app...not when unlocking the device.
There is an app called Enhanced Email that allows you to bypass security completely.

Email Client

Regular person here guys. Shouldn't even be on this forum. You guys are way too advanced for me. But i know just enough to be dangerous. And your the only ones that could help me with this.
I need a regular e-mail client. Just like the stock ones on all my LG's (2,3,4,5). And like all my old HTC phones. All the ones in the app store don't cut it for me. Either missing something or just not right. Mine is a business phone and the stock e-mail i get on all my skinned phones seem to be the best (for what i need). they are basic, simple, clean and just work!!! have notifications without downloading some other app to tell when you get a new e-mail. P.S. I use exchange. Don't like G-mail client for my work account. And don't want to mix my g-mail with work account either. I get over 250 per day.
is there anyway to get one of them? can i get a LG apk and use it on the Pixel? or is theirs themed for their skin? Doesn't have to be LG either. the Sammy one was good and Motorola & HTC also. is it possible or not a chance? Again i would need it to be as easy as downloading a APK. I can't do any of the ADB shell(or whatever it's called)
thanks in advance
I have tried almost all the store ones(just saving you time on telling my to use touchdown or something similar). They are all missing some feature or something that the stock ones I usually use have.
Have you tried Aquamail? I've found it to be better than any of the stock email apps.
there are a handful of great 3rd party Exchange email apps you can use. I would Google some of them and try them out to see which suits you best.

Unless something changed no OEM email client will work with stock Android because the framework is not there.

Hummmm 21, that one looks clean. I think that might be what i'm looking for.
of course still waiting for stupid phone. But i will be trying that one. Don't care if paid or not. Willing to pay if it's what i'm looking for. clean and stock looking. and works flawlessly with exchange(which i have not been able to find yet)
thanks for the tip.

I too struggle with emails .. I'm always looking for something better .. as I told you I like boxer I have to retract that statement. Alto may just be the best email app I've ever used. Super clean and smooth interface. Mark as read option for notifications instead of just archive . All inbox option. It's phenomenal dude. Try it out

I'll tell you this Ant. I don't have my phone yet but co-worker does. I got it for him. So it's basically mine when ever i need to do something on it.
Just loaded Alto and it looks good. Real good!!!! Just like a stock skinned type e-mail client. Waiting to test badge count and everything else. But this is definitely the cleanest client I have seen(yes their boring but that's what I need for work).
No badge count yet but nine took a few hours for everything to start working and to get a count..
thanks!!!!

If your using the Pixel launcher you won't get a badge count with any app. If your using Nova then you need to have Tesla unread installed from the play store and then turn Alto on in the settings.
Nine got it. Worked perfect actually. Every e-mail had a count. He just wants to get rid of it now because it's asking him to pay all of a sudden. Me personally have no problem paying. I just don't love the looks of Nine
Have you tried the Blackberry Hub? It's more than an email client (and the subscription includes more apps), but I've found it a really clean and easy app to use. It fixes my biggest gripe about GMail (i.e. threaded emails when using Gmail accounts).
Try Nine. I was addicted to the stock one as well until I used nine.
TypeApp, formerly known as Blue Mail.
I've tried a couple dozen over the years and this is the one I've liked the best.
Push, themes, tons of customization, free.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.trtf.blue
It might be a little too fancy/customizable for you though?

We just tried that one and not for me. All of these are like the ones I already tried. they all do something but not all thing I need. and please don't take this as an insult. Thanks VERY much for helping
Nine seems to be the closest. I get over 300 e-mails a day so I HAVE to have a badge count. Nine is the only one so far that does it. But even Nine isn't close to the skinned clients.
I just don't get it. Why can skin company's that we make fun of do perfect e-mail but not Google. Yes if i didn't have a job or was still a kid in high school G-mail would be fine. But it sucks for business(especially because of that stupid conversation type threading). But why doesn't Google allow for badge count. Everyone wants that. I've never heard of a person saying they don't. Nor is there a reason to not want it on everything that needs one(Text, e-mail, voicemail). Google is a business. I just can't figure this part out. Wake up google. I can't remember what I used back in my Gnex days(last time i had a pure android phone). but whatever it was i liked it.
i just don't get it!!!!! but i'll adapt and get over it. So far Nine seems to be the most professional.
