I'm coming from a Samsung Captivate so I'm familiar with the Galaxy S line. Interesting issue I encounter with the Galaxy S3 is that the aux connection to my car stereo generates a lot of noise when it is not playing music (or another media). I don't remember this issue with the Captivate. The cable is the same, the car is the same, the only difference is the phone. I have the cable completely inserted into the phone. The only other difference is that I have to have the stereo volume set louder relative to the Captivate to get the same volume, though I still hear the noise when the volume is lower. It's not white noise but a screechy, poppy noise.
Anyone else experience this?
I noticed this as well when hooked to my AVR. I haven't tried it with a different source though so I haven't isolated the S3 as the problem yet. Will test with Nexus7 tonight and see if I can reproduce.

Just bought a used/refurbished Tab 3 7.0 from Amazon.
The sound quality when connected to a stereo cable going to my truck's stereo aux in is VERY poor, scratchy, staticy and only hitting the left channel well.
However, when i try headphones, it sounds fine.
I have, for basic troubleshooting purposes:
-Know that the aux in jack in the truck is fine... it works with my HTC ONE and other devices i've tried.
-Know that the stereo audio cable(s) im using are fine. Again, used them with multiple devices to troubleshoot.
-Used multiple headphones and earphones to troubleshoot. I even used my skull candy's with detachable audio cable, then immediately tried that cable in the truck.
Audio is "tolorable" if the tablet is set to 40% or less, but that requires cranking the truck WAY higher then it should be.
Once i hit 50% of volume, it starts sounding like crap, and once i hit 70% its unusable.
However, with any earphones or headphones, i can push it all the way to 100% without distortion (and no, not wearing them while i do it)
Im thinking a software issue somewhere.
The tablet says "earphones connected" no matter which cable i plug in, headphones or aux cable.
Also, in accessibility the "mono if using a single earpiece" box is UNCHECKED.
I have the exact same issue. Were you able to figure it out?
EDIT: I found this link where safariking made a zip file to remove bloatware. I ran it and my sound is vastly improved.
Good Luck and remove bloatware at your own risk.

So ive got to say this phone has been pretty much awsome for the past 24 hours but I have found its first major short coming wondering if anybody else is having this issue.
SO here is what happens. I happily plugged my note 4 into the aux audio jack in my car and then I plugged it into the car charger. That is when I get this really annoying electrical noise through the stereo system in the car. So I was like hum that is weird my note 2 only did that if the jack was not plugged in all the way. Well when a sound on the phone plays the electrical noise goes away completely and I hear the sound or song or whatever audio is playing crystal clear. Then as soon as no sounds are playing as if the audio card in the phone is not being used its like it shuts off and lets all this electrical noise coming through the charging system of the phone. Then if say a txt comes in the electrical noise sound goes away the alert plays then after the alert plays the electrical noise comes back super annoying. Can hear the alternator in the car through the noise as well. Make me wonder if it is a software issue of some sort because the noise goes away totally whenever any program takes over the audio driver and plays something through the sound card.
Anybody else have this issue? Try it if ya have not would be interesting to hear reports on this. I do not have bluetooth in my car so could not test it. I always raise the phones volume all the way up when plugged into the aux jack so I have more preamping to the stereo.
Thanks
Haven't tried on the note 4 yet but I did have this same issue on the note 2. But it was more of a white noise. Very low almost TV static noise.

I've had this issue with multiple different phones - I don't think it is the software exactly.
The only time that would ever happen to me is if I was using my aux cable AND had my normal AC charger plugged into it (using an adapter for the car that turned the "smoking thingy" into an AC socket.) If I used an adapter for the car that just gave me a USB port to charge it through only cable it would never happen.
And this happens consistently - haven't tried with my note 4 though yet though.
Try it without your charger plugged in.

I agree without the charger plugged in there is no noise at all. But it is strange that the grounding loop problem only occurs if software is not playing any audio at all. It literally goes away when something plays audio I can hear it go silent then the audio plays then there is another 8th of a second of pure silence then the noise starts again. Or say you are listening to tune in radio or something and a notification comes up. It will pause the radio program and then you will hear the noise for a split second then a sound will play silent again then split second noise then the radio will resume playing. So between the hand off of the two audio programs playing a sound you hear the noise really weird.
I agree the AC adaptor made noise for me as well on the note 2 plugged into an inverter. But this is just my normal 12 v adapter that never had a problem with the note 2. Will be interesting to hear what more ppl say with their 12 v adapters.
My power adapter above 1 amp makes a lot of noise. Had a 2.x amp for quicker charge. Had to revert to 1.x amp charger to reduce noise.
I got my note 4 dev edition on Tuesday. I like to listen to podcast via pocketcasts and music through amazon prime music app, pandora and spotify. I notice at low levels there is an annoying hiss/ white noise that constantly is audible. I use these same apps on my iphone 6 plus and have never experienced this. I usually use yurbuds that direct the sound directly into the ears but it occurs with my old samsung earphones as well. (Verizon to cheap to allow them to include the earphones).
Is anyone else experiencing this? I tried to go into the play music app and use the equalizer but this had little affect. Is is an issue in 4.4.4 or could I have a bad phone or bad DAC??
I get the same problem as well with a Canadian Note 4 (N910W8). It's very annoying trying to listen to audiobooks or podcasts. Did not have this problem with the same audiobooks on Nexus 4. It seems like the hissing / static does not get louder by raising the volume so it's always present if volume is not muted and is very noticeable with spoken voice. Tried several players and it happens with all so it's not just Samsung Music with SoundAlive. I hope this is something that can be eventually improved and not "by design".
Are you plugged into a USB charger when you are listening?

I thought that might have been the problem as well but it sounds exactly the same when plugged in or not. It sounds like hissing and a bit of crackling after spoken words or pauses between sentences, very noticeable even at only 1 volume step from muted. Probably happens to music, videos and games as well but may not be as noticeable.
I've tried stock, custom roms, volume mods and Viper4Android and tried different players that I know use different playback methods.
I don't think there's a quick fix for this problem and we'll probably all have to live with it. Here's hoping Samsung's Lollipop update brings improvements.
Weird. I dont get a hiss at all unless its plugged into a USB charger.
Might be a hardware issue.
Turns out that it's affecting all 3 of my Sennheiser headphones but not the stock headphones. Never had a problem with these headphones on any device I had within the last 7 years.
It has to do with the low impedance of my headphones and the fact that the Note does not provide enough power to drive the headphones correctly. I went and purchased a 36ohm impedance adapter on eBay (from awaudio) and it got rid of my problem! My remote control on the headphones no longer work with the adapter but the microphone does. I've also got a 14ohm adapter in the mail that I've yet to try so I cannot currently comment on using more or less than the 36ohm I've got now.
I found the idea to try this reading through long threads in the Galaxy S3 forums so this isn't a new problem to Samsung. Many people have exchanged their S3s to correct the problem to no avail. The good news is that the problem was eventually fixed in a firmware update so I guess it's possible for the Note 4 as well but I'm not holding my breath for that.
I believe that the sound may not be quite as strong with the adapter but the ROM I'm using has the sound boost mod and is more than loud enough so I cannot complain. There may not be an easy way to fix this on a Verizon device if you need the volume as loud as with the stock headphones.
Night and day difference when listening to audiobooks or podcasts with low impedance headphones.
Power might be the issue, but I know a lot of others dealt with this and replacing ended up working. I think on the n2 the headphone Jacks were a bit loose but don't remember
Hello , how are you? First, sorry for my english.
I need help, and I think that you would help me. I have a G3, and I've noticed that the earphones are making a noise when a sound is emitted. I've noticed too that this happen only in Lollipop ROMS (stock based).
I've installed Kit Kat and CM12 baseds and the noise doesn't appears. I already installed via Flash Tools and TWRP, with all wipes, but the noise persists. I've noticed the noise after I've installed the app Sound booster for G3.
I dont think that is hardware, because in Kit Kat and CM12 works perfectly. The noise happens too in all sounds of system (including music, video).
I've tested with more than one earphone. And before installing the app to boost the sound, it worked perfectly.
The noise doesn't happens in speaker.
Can you help me please?
I have this little noise too, but i note that it happens only when charging. Disappears when not charging. Probably an interference. Between earphone plug and charge
It's a fairly common lollipop occurrence. It happens in other devices too...

I've just noticed additional noise whilst music is playing (on top of the beeps when plugging in and hiss whilst no sound is playing). This noise is best describable as unwanted distortion on sound of particular amplitude, though a quick experiment just now makes me wonder whether the hardware design is bad. (AIUI G3 audio's handled by the Snapdragon MSM8975AC SOC, unlike my old Samsung S3 LTE which had a discrete Wolfson DAC).
This problem is also VERY audible on the bundled LD "QuadBeat 2" headphones, in both ears at various points. I'll see if I can get a recording of it.
Methodology:
I loaded the "Wave" signal generator app and tested various volumes - noise is evident at particular amplitudes. I set the variables thus: a 100 Hz tone, 30 seconds duration, varying amplitudes. Finally set Wave amplitude to 0.02, turned the device volume to max and listened to try and ascertain whether this noise was being introduced by the chipset or the Android OS.
Results:
There's very noticeable 'fuzz' and unpleasant distortion in the left channel, which goes away both under and over a particular amplitude threshold -- which leaves you with an annoying band of amplitude where you will always have additional noise overlaid onto the sound.
Frustratingly, this is often in fade-outs or quiet passages of songs where you're listening most intently. It also renders the G3 useless for any kind of analytical or accurate audio output, a crying shame. My Google Fu is lacking too, because I didn't see this thread before buying mine... I wonder if installing CM12 might fix it?
Unless this is a problem with the stock kernels and the way they handle audio output, I'm becoming concerned that this handset is faulty by design and I'm going to have to swap for another make. Until it died, my old S3 had great audio capabilities, and a nice chipset to boot!
I've sent a customer service request to LG specifically about this. Here's what I wrote:
I'm experiencing significant audio problems with my new G3 handset.
When headphones are plugged in with no audio playing, I hear two beeps in the left channel. Then, a low level - but constant hissing - in the left channel, until the sound chip is initialised to play audio. The right channel makes occasional warbly, 'squeaky' noise, seemingly modulating with CPU activity.
Also, since updating at the weekend to Android 5.0 Lollipop (OTA via the LG Software Update process), I have noticed that whilst playing any audio, if I adjust the device volume to around 50%, additional noise is introduced into the signal chain (audible as a dithered 'fuzz' over the audio content).
I have tested with various pairs of professional headphones (I am a qualified sound engineer) and the problems are present throughout. I am concerned that these are significant design flaws. Please advise if a software fix is available, and whether these are known issues with this handset.

I have found a workaround for this
I have tested 3 LG D855 and all of them have noise/static/high-freq leak from the processor out to the headphones. It might be a faulty design for the headphones amplification stage for headphones (when the headphones logo appears on the status bar). However, when using line level output (the jack appears on the status bar) the problem does not reproduce.
Therefore the workaround I've found is to trick the phone into line level output mode and then plug the headphones. To do this you need to plug in a 3.5mm jack extensor or a 2-to-1 3.5mm Y-adapter with no load, that's it, with nothing connected to it. At that moment, the phone will activate the line level output mode. Only after that you will connect the headphones, and you'll see there are no artifacts on the audio.
That being said, I'm not sure this will work with all kind of headphones as I have only tried with mines that are low-impedance ones, but on those it works perfectly. To be checked if the level of the signal in line mode is enough to drive other headphones.
In any case, it is a shame this happens with a high-end and expensive smartphone. I was hopping this will be fixed in a newer hardware revision but I got two replacements of mine and no luck. I have read somewhere this might be a flaw in Snapdragon 801, as it integrates completely the signal routings but isolates badly highfreq noise from processor stages, etc. etc. but I do not remember where I did read it unfortunately.
I hope this helps!
I often plug my phone in to my stereo system using the headphone jack.
I've noticed that when the phone is not actually playing something I can hear some little crackles and occasionally some buzzes.
I've tried it plugged in to several sources and they all show the same bahaviour, so it's not the stereo, it's the phone.
Anyone else have a noisy headphone jack?
Did you try all of them with the same wire? That could be the cause of the noise.
I've only tried mine with a wired headset and didn't notice any noise.
Yes, different wires

Good question. Yes, I tried two different 1/4 inch to RCA cables and also my 1/4 inch to cassette adapter. Also tried a different phone with the same cables and had silence.
This only happens to me when I plug my AUX cable in my car into my 5X, but it doesn't happen when I put my headphones into it.
I can hear an audible noise every few seconds when I have my headphones on and nothing playing on the phone.. No issues with those headphones plugged into other devices.
Also, my output volume is low. Need to crank my stereo up in my truck when this is connected via aux. Full volume on both the phone and truck is equal to about half when using my nexus 6.. Huge disappointment.
I have this same issue and I've also noticed that the device does not get loud enough when plugged into my cars stereo on my S5 I can the volume all the way up on the phone and keep the stereo at 25 and it would be loud enough for me but now with my 5x I have the phones volume all the way up and the stereo set at 38 "witch is the max volume for the system" and I'm still left sometimes with wanting the music to be louder so hopefully this can be fixed with a software update

Same experience here with the volume in my truck compared to my old phones
I've noticed this happening on my phone as well. It does it with two different aux cables (not when I plug in headphones, though, oddly). My roommate's 5x does it, too. Turning the screen on stops the crackling. I recorded a video of it (I apparently can't post outside links so you'll have to build the url yourself): youtube . com/watch?v=-RObC7bZcQs
The volume seems fine though.
Edit: I received a replacement phone yesterday, and it has this issue as well.

Yes, I can report the exact same behaviour.
If I put a different phone on the exact same setup, there is complete silence when that phone is not playing back audio.
Anyone find a solution to this?
I get a pop in the silent gap between every song on Pandora. I am using a Bose Q15 noise cancelling headphones and nexus 5x with marshmellow. With new batteries in the headphones and low volume 15%..
I've been noticing the same issue. It only happens when no audio is playing back and the screen is locked. When I unlock the device there's no popping until it locks again.

Ditto. Getting pretty frustrated with so many accumulating little annoyances on Nexus phones.
