Google website help - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

So i go to Google.com on my S3. Start typing my search and the auto fills below start popping up. I click on of them and nothing happens. I have to re-touch into the search bar and start typing all over again. I can however press the arrow which will fill into the search bar then i can continue, but it's really annoying with websites.
Example:
Search Bar: Kota
Fill in option 1: Kotaku.com
Fill in option 2: Kotaku
I'll touch the website and google goes blank. So annoying. Is anyone else experiencing this? Any tips on how to fix this issue?

It does the same thing for me when searching on Google. I would prefer it to be like one the YouTube app, where clicking it auto fills it and allows you to keep writing, while the aarow takes you to it.
Sadly I'm not sure how to change it on Google, because it just seems inconvenient.

Browser questions

Hello everyone,
This is my first android device and I have a couple of questions regarding the browser:
1) Is there a way to add a plug-in to the browser to behave like iOS's Safari "Reader" functionality? Something that will basically display the text of an article without all the fluff (like ads and whatnot)?
2) The fonts used for the different sites I frequent seem to be a bit off. Are there fonts missing from the stock android that I need to add?
3) Zooming-in to a piece of the text by double-tapping seems to be a bit off, for me its zooming in a bit more that it should leaving the last few words of each line of text outside of the view. Am I doing something wrong here?
Thanks a lot!

what the...
1) "Reader" functionality? some kind of jailbreak hack? Anyways, I believe you can disable images in the settings of browser (theres a ton of settings there so go check them out). As for ads, there are some apps out there that do that.. but as a dev, I'm pretty against it so maybe someone else will point one out
2) Thats even more weird.. the Galaxy Nexus does use the new roboto font and it does use this to render websites. But you're saying some websites appear off? Got any examples?
3) huh? double-tapping works very well for me. Again, some example sites? You're double tapping on a segment of text right?
For #3 you probably need to turn on word wrap/reflow or whatever it is called. Occassionally doesnt work and you need to refresh on dolphin browser.

The answer is yes
For issue #1, there is! You don't need an account, but I would highly recommend signing up for one at readability dot com
Go the Android Market and search for Readability. Download the Readability Bookmark app and create the bookmarklet. This will create a bookmark with no icon called Readability. Then just go to any page with boat loads of text and images and ads and garbage and click the tabs button to show the bookmarks button, click it and then click the Readability bookmarklet.
It's a terrible workflow but it does work. I've been using it the past couple of days and it's very comparable to the Reader button in Mobile Safari.
For issue #2, I don't know of anything like that.
For issue #3, I have the same problem. Double tap on a column of text and the column fills the screen with just a few words off of the edge. I've played around with the browser settings and I can't get it to work. Pretty much any site with text, to answer kwazi's question.
Thanks for the respone!

It just formats the page to make it all text with no images or ads or anything else that doesn't belong to the article you're reading. Its like the Readability plug-in for desktop google Chrome and Firefox.

I noticed this while reading on a boxing site I frequent: www.eastsideboxing.com
I also noticed the same with websites written in a foreign language.

Thanks. Do you think this can only be done under Dolphin browser and not the stock one? I've just checked the settings of the stock browser and didn't find that option.
I have a question, will Last Pass be able to plug into it something like it does with Dolphin?
After further inspection, the font looks just about right when zoomed in (for English at least). I think my eyes are not used yet to see cramped text on this display
So I guess the only thing that I still can't figure out is how to make the double tap zoom work properly.

Letters in main menu.

Hello. I just discovered a strange thing and I don't know how to get rid of it. So i was adding some music and I deployed "Sound enhancer" and after that my phone grouped all my apps in menu like it is done in people tab. So i have a huge letter above all my apps which makes my menu longer and it takes more time to find an app. It also doesn't look eyecandy. So i want you to ask how to get rid of those letters and bring my menu back to normal state.
Regards
okey~
It's not a bug, it's a feature. After a cetain amount of apps this is added to your menu. When you touch on one of the letters in the menu it will bring up a screen of letters. Touch on one of these and it will take you to those apps starting with the corresponding letter. This was added to reduce scrolling when you have a large amount of apps. If you do not like it I believe that uninstalling enough apps to bring you below the limit will disable the feature.
I know how it works. But is there no way to bring it back without uninstalling apps?
Not sure it goes away even if you uninstall apps.

Nope.
Surely it makes scrolling faster, not longer? For example, rather than scrolling all the way down to, say, 'Skype'...two taps and you are there in the 'S' section..
Either way, it cannot be disabled (except perhaps if you are fully unlocked, and edit the registry?)

You are right, and think only a fool might want to disable it! I purposefully installed 4 apps more that I won't ever use just to get those indexed letters on!
Use voice instead, it is the fastest. Hold windows key and say start "app name"

It gets better - say find "whatever address"
It will give you directions also (right above the web search)
or find "Store name" it will show that store closes to you.
and try find "movie name"
It will show theaters near you playing the movie
and find "weather in san fransisco" for example will show 5 day forcast via bing in websearch
Then find an iphone user that has siri and show him opening apps. Siri doesn't do that yet i use find flashlight all the time to use htc flashlight. it auto comes on when the app opens and it great for opening car or house door in the dark
enjoy!

Prevent Android from logging my search history

Is there a way to do so?
Specifically, I mean my last google searches, browser history and market searches.
I just found options to clear existing histories, but no entry to prevent logging new ones.
if you're trying to hide your tracks in specific instances, you could use an incognito window in the browser to search including the android market. Then everything goes away when you close that window. But if you mean always, then I don't know.

Yeah, I mean the same settings I have in my Notebook's Firefox: Simply don't even start a history. Or when I tap the Google Search window on top of the screen - don't give me my last searches.

Try this.... Open Google Search... Menu -> Settings -> Google Search -> Uncheck Use Web Histroy
Yup, tried that already. I'm at the moment not even logged into my gmail account. It still gives me my last searches below the google text field on the home screen.
Just to be clear: I don't mind that "instant search" which autocompletes, but the storage of my last searches bugs me. It's the same in the market.
I wonder if this is related to a recent article ibsae on yahoo news about Google saving your history .
I deleted it all and paused it through Gmail on my desktop. However I believe this is something different but regardless ibwoukd check that yahoo news article. When I have a chance I'll get link for it

I realize you just don't want it popping up but this is why maybe??

I don't think it should affect the OS itself. Remember, I'm talking about the search bar on the home screen, not the browser.
It is possible to delete the search results one by one by tapping the X on their side, but there is apparently no option to prevent the search bar from creating the entries in the first place.

I had the same issue so I downloaded 'Beaver' by Crowbar Solutions (free and paid on the Market) which is now my browser and basically saves absolutely no trace of your browsing history. The browser is pretty much the same as the stock browser and I have the paid version of the app so was able to set my own homepage to google, etc.
...and I just realised you were referring to the search bar on the homescreen my confusion sorry. I don't use that search bar so can't offer a solution.

Just do a Google search for your favorite team a couple times. Google Now will learn.
Google Now learns based on where you are, what you do and search. Just use your device and let it go.

These instructions make no sense to me. There is no "Google Now", there is the search bar with the mic on the home screen, that brings up the search box with the "Now Cards". I assume that's what you are talking about?
But in the settings, there is no sub option "Google Now" there either. There are:
* Now Cards
* Voice
* Phone Search
* Privacy and accounts
And there is no sync option in any of them, the top right hand has some dots that popup "Send feedback" and "Help".
In any case I have restarted the entire phone without success.

Well, you're one step closer than me because I don't have "Now Cards" in my settings. Just Voice, Phone Search, and Privacy and accounts. So, basically, all the help in the phone relating to now cards don't even apply to me. Awesome. Anyone have any idea how to turn on now cards on a phone that apparently doesn't have any?

From what we can make out, your searches MUST be for teams both in the US and MUST be currently mid-season. I.e searching for Manchester United will give no results or cards, same as NBA team currently as its off season.
I had this problem because my account was through google apps and the predictive ui needed to be enable for mobile in the apps dashboard. If that is the case for you, try this solution another user found: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1744793&page=2

I haven't switched to Jelly Bean yet as I prefer the features in AOKP but had a question about Google Now.
Is the 'learning' it does tied to your Google Account or to your device?
i.e. I use my GNexus on the go but sometimes I'm going to be using my Xoom or my Nexus 7 I'm waiting for, will everything it's learned from being used on my GNexus be available on my 2 tabs? Also if the device is ever wiped does it have to relearn everything?
Just wondering. Looks like people love it so far.
Thanks!

As long as you're signed into Google, it will keep learning about your preferences, doesn't matter whether you're on a phone, tablet, or on the computer.
And no, Google won't forget your preferences even if you format the phone/tablet.

Slowing down search?
When I have Google Now enabled I find that the time it takes to launch the search app is significantly longer than when Now is disabled from search. Has anyone found a way to speed it up? I use the search bar for everything like opening apps, web searches, etc and need to be able to launch it quickly on the go!! But I do like Google Now so want to continue to use it but not if it's slowing me down, man!
btw, running stock 4.1.1
Thanks for the help guys!

Pop up browser activation?

Hey what's up guys. Not sure if this has already been discussed but I was wondering if there was a way to activate the pop up browser without actually clicking on link. As many of you know we are somewhat limited on the applications we can use in split screen mode. But I noticed if I already have pop up browser open I am able to navigate to almost any application on the phone. It would be great to quickly look something up while already in a game or in an app that does not support multi window.
Any ideas?

Yes, I downloaded this and I'm positive it is exactly what you are looking for. It DOES work on my t-mo GN2 without a problem
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1972869
here is a news post about it as well. http://www.xda-developers.com/andro...er-without-clicking-links-on-the-galaxy-note/
it is in pure apk form(simple dl and install) and will create an app. You could launch it without clicking any links, just like you would launch the stock browser.
I am 99% that is the one i downloaded and it works perfect for me
If I understood you correctly and this is what you're looking for, hit the thanks button if i I helped you out. Gl
