So I got the S3 last week, finally found the root thread yesterday and rooted it last night but had already done the OTA update. I am happy with the stock ROM for the most part, just want to get the bloat out of it. I plan on putting CWM on it tonight then backing the stock ROM up.
once I have the stock ROM backed up is it possible to use Ti Backup to uninstall the bloatware without causing any issues with in the stock ROM? If I do remove the bloatware will it cause issues with putting a custom ROM on in the future? What all bloatware can be removed without and bad things happening to the stock ROM.
Sorry for the questions, picture me as that 40 year old guy who knows enough to understand and also mess things up so I try to understand and do calculated moves before I actually do them.
Thanks in advance...Todd

you can use tibu to uninstall bloat. if you are unsure, freeze the app (in tibu) for a few days and see if you get fc's. if you don't, then you can uninstall, but it never hurts to have a backup. removing bloat will not affect custom roms
You can also just disable the applications in the built in application manager. You do have to remove any application updates first.

I used to be able do that, but now I don't have a button to disable or enable an app...any ideas what could cause this? (I used tibu to freeze bunch of bloatware, must have frozen something that caused that?)

Sorry if this has been asked a lot (search was only partly helpful)...
I rooted my Dinc2 today and would surely like to delete Vzw's Backup Assistant, but ran across mention on some other forum of potential problems if fully removed.
What's the opinion here? Freeze it or whack it entirely?
TIA
Either. I don't use it, never had a problem deleting it.

Some of the custom ROM, if I'm not mistaken, deleted them completely.
We have 2 DI2 (black & red) running SR's Zeus v1.3 and it's frozen on both devices (along with a few other left-over bloatware) and no FC'd/freeze/etc. - it's as good as uninstalling or deleting them for good. Ditto, same for RMK's Ginger Sense rom (rooted stock & debloated, etc.) and ran without a hitch & never missed them.
Any & all sync. needed are taken care by Google account.

simply use the rooted rmk sense , it is the stock after removing bloatware
there is an APK or script called Rom Cleaner in XDA , check it
I have deleted it and run no problems.
I have used a lot of roms and never had an issue. Just back them up to google and ur set unless u go back to a basic phone then u might have an issue.
I wouldn't
There may be important system file in that, and it may cause your phone to crash. If you try to delete it please make a nano droid Back up to be safe.
Freeze both BackupAssistant and SyncService
Thanks for the feedback. To be safe, I froze it, using AntTek App Manager.
Strangely, while the BackupAssistant was effectively gone, SyncService (com.fusionone.android.sync.service) showed up among the running apps. After much googling, I discovered that FusionOne appears to be the company that helped Vzw write their Backup Asst. And it looks like you need to freeze both the BackupAssistant and SyncService to effectively stop the process.
[Q] Advice/Help on removing "locked" or un-uninstallable apps that I do not want
Ok, so.... Flashed CM 10.1. Did not like it at all. I have always been happy with the stock rom and realized through this process that what I really wanted was a stock ROM that I could remove all the nonsense that is imbedded and that runs and drains my battery life. I want to have complete control over my OS.
So, my main question is: Having read differing opinions on how to remove the so called bloatware(I like some of the stuff that is built in), what is the best way to go about it?
I obviously can root and flash my phone and can install CWM and have Odin installed and have done all that stuff. What I am looking for is a complete solution/method to removing the apps that I do not want. A lot of times the so called bloatware free ROMS have taken out too much and do not have what I am looking for so I am almost looking to create a custom stock ROM in a way by being able to delete the stuff that I do not use at all.

This.
You can flash the bloated version of your carrier's rom, get root and use Titanium Backup to either uninstall or freeze (paid version) the apps you don't want.
Thanks! Done. Exactly what I needed.
Had already reverted back to the bloated version with something like this in mind and actually paid for the pro version. I think this is the first time I've ever paid for an app.
Now to make a list of all the things running that I don't need/use and uninstall them.
So for the past 2 months i have been having issues with my S2. I been wanting to do a factory reset on the phone but I am a little reluctant. Here is what is going on.
My phone has been pretty much freezing every time it can, and i mean freezing for a good amount of time.
It still under Android 4.0.3, not yet updated to latest because I am a bit scare. I have not followed up with anything lately. And I have been trying to catch up but for some reason today, everything seems to be for me like I am reading Chinese.
When I first and only time rooted my phone was last year and it was for the sole purpose of installing S Voice, a feature that i never even use. At the same time, to do so, i had to delete a few apps. Now, i checked Titanium backup and they showed backed up.
So here is what i want to do. My system app, shows 0MB free. I will like to uninstall completely Svoice, update my phone to the lates and start fresh. Then, reroot, so i can only freeze apps, not uninstall them.
Will this be possible with missing system apps? will i run the risk or bricking or what steps should i take first?
For clockwork, i think i still am under 5.0.2.7 touch, that i have not even update. Thats how far back i am. Looking forward to get back in the game. Will continue to do some more search and reading.
As for you wanting to go back to stock, i would reflash 4.0.3 stock (that would give you those missing system apps and less of a risk for bricking ) then use titanium to recover your other apps that is missing.. As far for root, you can do that after the reflash or after you install apps from titanium, your choice.
This is what i did when i had some problems and works for me

Device Info: Sprint Galaxy Note 2 Running rooted stock Android 4.4.2. (chainfire auto root using odin)
Wifi only unit. I have no sprint contract purchased it used (I'm new to customizing android- I have flashed an old palm pda, but only via guidance)
Situation: Rooted the unit and have customized it as mine
1. No custom backup and would like to do that
2. Do not like all the bloatware apps
3. Now a system update has been downloaded asking to install (I've not okayed it)
So please help me with each of these
1. Please point me in the direction of best way to take a backup of existing rom ( I do have philz downloaded, but I'm not sure about how to ?
2. Would that deal with the persistent update request? Would it be good to update?
3. and then the bloatware removal, should I use an app that removes system apps? ( I have titanium, but I'm not good at knowing which apps to touch and not to touch) Thanks in advance and no I'm not in a hurry as yet.
Hi,
I will have your thread moved to your device section so the experts who own your device can help you.
Good luck!
Point to links please
If someone doesn't want to tackle this whole question I'd just appreciate links on how to step by step. I'd appreciate any help at all, I'm just a bit fearful of bricking the device, but if the instructions are clear I can definitely do this.
The first is issue is backup that is my priority at the moment. The second is whether to install the update or not and how to get rid of the nag. thanks
Not sure about backing up the ROM itself... but what I do is just back up the apps with Titanium and then re-load the apps (or just data) when I have to re-install my ROM like I did a couple of weeks ago. Prior to the Note II, I had an HTC Hero (stop laughing) and would do nandroids for that device. Don't know that you need that for Samsung devices, but somebody may be better to explain than I am.
ETA: here's an article on creating a nandroid, FWIW
http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/what-is-a-nandroid-backup-and-how-exactly-does-it-work/
If you are rooted, I don't know that the persistent update will actually apply/install. I'm on Classic Stock 4.4.2 and I also had the same nag. Here's a link on how to disable the update nag. This is what I did, as my phone would not apply the update so I just disabled the persistent reminder using the steps below.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2442207
With respect to removing system apps, not sure I can offer much direction other than to suggest removing obvious apps (maybe like the Sprint Zone app) and then just doing a search on each app that looks like you can/want to delete or uninstall. Probably a bit time consuming, however, I am not aware of a "bloatware list" or anything which outlines safe-to-remove apps.
Much appreciated Lenny
When I did the root, I didn't really want a custom rom, just stock with root. Now that I've used titanium backup and have removed the install update nag- I'm set for a while!

You might also look at adding a free version of BusyBox (I use stericson's, and jrummy also has one out there).
Also might want to look at an install of AdAway, which you'll need to install manually (not available from the Play Store). You don't have to install the whole F-Droid package, you can download only the AdAway apk if you want.
https://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdid=org.adaway
One last piece of info, you may want to turn off automatic updating for apps, as the SuperSU app can have problems after an update and you might have to re-root your phone. Here's what I ran into.

Thank you! I've side loaded adb adblock is adaway better? I use App Ops to turn off specific things within each app such as location finding, I like MW apps manager to add more apps to the multiwindow feature., and I've turned off most apps auto update, but some apps I've left auto update. I've just turned off auto update on super user -- even though, I've not yet experienced any major issues as yet.

Don't know if adb adblock is better - I've never used it. Didn't see you mention a couple of these things when you said you were "all set for awhile", so I was just trying to offer a few other things to consider and look into. Sounds like you're already on the ball though!
Personally, I'm happy with stock. Big reason for me to root was getting rid of ads. I've tried some of the other ROMs but I've always come back to the stock look and feel. I've had the device since about 1 week after it came out in Fall 2012. Of course, I am also on my third one since I totaled two other ones. I absolutely love it, and am in no hurry to upgrade (if possible). Hope you enjoy it as I have... lots of good stuff from devs here!
I have a Galaxy S4, had its for a good while now, i guess half a year or so? Maybe getting close to a year, hell as I know rofl, time flies by fast. I started seeing my phone dieing super fast even when I'm not using it(idle). I see System manager application(carrier iq) x462 wakelocks, and others listed below in pics. I also had Outlook app which also had tons of wakelocks(uninstalled it). How should i fix this problem, I'm lucky to get enough battery for a day's worth. If i start using phone data to music, browse the web, or do daily tasks that shouldn't impact on the battery much still drain the battery pretty quickly.
I'm still on 4.2.2, mdl bootloader, using nh7 modem, rooted. Tried using apps like battery doctor, clean master to clean residue, DU battery saver, etc. I'm not sure if they even help, as it will show a list of apps running, u hit to kill them, and it "kills them", and after 5mins if you open again, it shows that u need to close them again. Should i just update to lollipop? Would that fix anything, anything else i should do? Or is this normal? I saw other people on this forum somehow getting 3-7days of standby time?
Also when using gps, phone gets really hot, and using data to browse, etc also makes the phone pretty hot, I'm using a case, maybe that's the culprit of it?
Any tips/info would help. Thanks.
Your phone is overloaded with crap apps, your firmware is outdated and you need to debloat your phone with Romtoolbox.
Those battery apps should only be used to troubleshoot and uninstall, lookout is a system heavy app that uses too many resources, clean sweep is another app you don't need.
Use Zoner Antivirus if you think you need that service, all that Tmobile junk apps you need to remove using Romtoolbox.
Cpu Spy is a simple app to keep track of your phone as far as sleep is concerned.
Flashing the latest firmware will also help being that apps are being optimized for the latest kitkat and lollipop.
You have work to do.

Haha yeah, I got work to do. Which firmware version should i go for that is stable atm? Heard 5.01 is full of bugs and i don't want to deal with that atm rofl. Just need my phone to eat less juice, have lightweight performance, smooth, etc. Hoping updating firmware will remove overheating, battery drain, etc.
I saw that 5.01 removed some little features like, when you hold the power button, you could mute/vibrate/sound without unlocking your phone, and some other lil features that were helpful.
Also, is there a list somewhere that lists all the bloatware apps that you should remove from you device that comes with the firmware, from t-mobile, etc.
Was also wondering if there was a handy app that had turn on/off data, flashlight, and other things all in one and lightweight app. Thanks.
First things first, I would install stock firmware first and run phone for a couple of days to make sure all problems are resolved and that everything works.
Then you can figure out what rom you want, custom or stock.
Stay away from 5.0 lollipop for now it's super buggy.
Some of the features you mentioned can be had with Xposed frameworks, many apps to choose from.

I think I am running a stock 4.2.2 rom rooted already. Since i disabled lots of bloatware apps the OTA doesnt work atm, if i enable all of them I can get OTA update from T-mobile. Should i just do OTA update to a certain version? Don't really use custom roms atm anyways, and kinda don't want to lose all my data on my phone and start over lol. Or just backup data on the phone and flash a stock rom like 4.4.2, etc, to keep the mdl bootloader for the future, eh idk.
If i missed something let me know.

Sticking with 4.4.2 is not advisable due to app conflicts you can run into as developers update to lollipop certain apps may stop working or cause problems with your ability to use your phone. Best bet is to update to kitkat NK2 and be up to date.
The only way to get OTA is to do a factory reset and that will wipe the phone clean, like it just came out of the box. The safest way to restore data is to copy your internal disk onto a folder on your pc, and after the reset you can transfer back to the phone whatever data or folders you want.
You can also try flashing the update with custom recovery, this method will keep your data intact as long as your on a stock touchwiz rom, then you don't have to OTA.
Forget about MDL bootloader, it doesn't have Knox but after you update you can remove Knox.
Knox is only needed for warranty purposes and since your out of warranty don't worry about it.
ShinySide has a link in development to download the Nk2 firmware, just follow directions.

Greenify will help your battery tremendously. Kills a lot of apps that stay loaded in the background. But be careful with certain apps, you won't get notifications for them if you hibernate them.
Facebook, and messenger are apps you should allow to run in the background, because you won't get notifications for them if you hibernate with greenify.

Don't really see much directions on that page either lol, I'll prolly just do what you said, copy the internal folders/files to pc, flash the full firmware of 4.4.4 nk2. Plus I come home late from work everyday, so i might have to w8 to do this till saturday or w.e. But yeah, I don't really care about knox, only want never firmware, still be sim unlocked to all carriers, etc. Should i also make a custom recovery just in case or w.e, or doing factory reset is fine as it it if something goes wrong? Thanks.

If you are rooted on an older Android version the odds are good that you've got a Google Play Services Wakelock caused by the System Update Service.
It's a major flaw (maybe there on purpose) in the latest Google Play Services that autoupdates itself.
You can kill it. But as old as your ROM is, it's worth your time to update it anyway.

Google services has 2,800 wakelocks, iqcarrier at 950, and android system at 660. But yeah, I'll be switching to nk2 for now till, a stable lollipop is out. Haven't had much problems on mdl, just dont like how fast battery drains, etc.
