Dropped my Evo in the lake over the weekend. It filled up with water and died immediately. I was able to take it all apart and blow it out with compressed air til it was all dried up. The phone now boots fully and everything appears to work (sending this from my Evo!) except for the camera. Neither front or back works and I don't have insurance so Sprint totally turned me away. Does this sound like an easy fix? The camera turns on but the picture is all fuzzy and I can't actually take a photo or video. I found replacements on eBay for around 20 bucks but don't know if that will fix it. Any thoughts?

it's possible that the compressed air messed up some of the solder on the MotherBoard... i don't know much about phones (mainly work on PC's) but if it's anything like a pc there is a motherboard and the solder could have been weak and the compressed air blew it right off...
or maybe there is still some moisture... if that is the case... i have heard of a couple of solutions... open the phone back up and submerge it in a bowl of rice. let it sit over night... put back together see if that works.
if not... i have heard that dipping it in a bowl of WD-40 and letting it dry over night works...
i have never tried the latter but have used the former once...
as far as replacing the camera itself... i wouldn't know sorry
Replacing the camera modules should be pretty easy. The rear camera module in particular sometimes has a tendency to come loose on its own, so it shouldn't be too much work to remove it. The front camera module should also be pretty easy, though you'd need to do more disassembly to take that out. I would look up the various teardowns of the evo that are available online for details on doing that.
As for whether it will fix your issue; you won't really know until you try. That's one of the things that kinda sucks about water damage, it's not going to do the same thing with every device, that's why in general people usually don't even bother trying to fix water damage and either live with the damage or get a replacement.
Best bet for a fix is to take out the battery and submerge the phone in distilled water and let it soak, slight aggitate the water.
That should remove any deposits on the board. The problem with normal water is it has all kinds of crap in it that get left behind if you just let it air dry.
Than take it out and stick it in a bag of uncooked rice to 3 days to dry it out.
Power on and test.

Not a bad idea, although it's kinda scary to try that! If you do, I would also get some of that computer duster air and dry it again gently. I used my wife's hairdryer on mine as well, and then the rice trick.
I wonder if electrical parts cleaner would work as well?
Replacing the camera modules are easy I did mine when I replaced my digitizer......bought this EVO for 20 bucks on Craigslist paid like 60 in parts not a bad deal

Thanks for all the input guys, I really appreciate it! It now seems as though the camera is working properly, for now. If I start to have further issues, I will use your suggestions to try to fix. Thanks again! Looks like I may have really dodged a bullet here!
needless to say, that's the thing i hate the most about the D3O cases, they are too slippery
it was a heavy rainy day today, pool of water everywhere
...and well, getting off the car the phone went phrlum! and i was like OMG!!!!!!
I think i shouted holy F***! unconsciously and was pretty loud as all the people in the shopping plaza parking lot was looking my way
i guess the whole think too about a couple of seconds, as i picked it up right away, but i went deep, the screen was facing me as it dropped, so i saw i sunk like the titanic, and water covering the screen... at that point i was like... oh shiate! gonna have to take it apart to let it dry
but to my disbelief i rescued it from its waterly doom, and loh'& behold it was still live and kicking, damn mud dirty though, but after cleaning it up, i was able to confirm all the features are still working fine.
and the screen protector just made itself worth the money..
at first i though the water damage caused a dead pixel, as there was tiny speck that would not go away no matter how i cleaned it, was ready for the worse, thinking 1 dead LED is nominal vs the idea of having to replace the whole screen if the water did really make its way to the innars
well thankfully in the end i tried removing the screen protector and taaaa daaaa that nasty spot is gone too
whatever it was it must have hit something hard when it landed in the water, it did bounce 5 times in the puddle pavement before landing still.
anyways, right now i left it sitting on top of my super heated i7 for it to dry over night
all i7 CPUs even at iddle temp hover around 50c i always put stuff i need to dry quickly on top of my PC
Glad to hear the beast is unscathed.
I7 is cool but i would try rice trick if it was me.

Dam that had to make for an insane day!
I agree I recommend the rice trick! Maybe even combine the 2 just to be on the safe side!
Dodged a bullet there Dude. Cheers. I did a similar thing. Put my phone by the sink. H sh1t!!! There was an invisible puddle. Was wet in all sorts of places. Removed the battery and properly dried it. Thanked God approprietately as it is fine

The rice trick is a way to get the rice absorb the moisture out of the phone . Fill up a small container filled with rice. Put the phone inside the rice. Leave it there for about a day and the rice will absorb the moisture out of the phone. Also, the moisture indicator stickers inside the phone (battery compartment) and the battery will turn from white to pink once it gets in contact with water. This will void your warranty unless you bought an optional warranty that covers water damage.

yeah man, that was a close one yesterday.
i literally saw my life flash in front of me for a split second there
in that transient state, i though about business contacts, documents, family contacts, photos, water seal prof, no warranty, repair cost, etc, etc
pretty much everything that i was going to "lose" if the phone did die
i'm glad i didn't have to experience any of that, and as for all my data, they are all backed up automatically to my gmail account, so i wouldn't really lose anything, just a normal reaction, or more like the annoyance of having to restore all the data manually
water damage and no audio
Help Please! Q. Basically where is the actual microphone element and related contacts? The full descriptive problem- To avoid damaging my phone at construction jobsite I placed it, with other personal belongings inside my lunch bag. (polyethelene grocery sack). Enclosed inside the bag was a tall can of Arizona Iced Tea brand, Sweet Tea beverage. Mysteriously the can had burst or punctured and the phone was found fully submerged 100% in the sugary liquid on the bottom of the bag. I removed rear cover and the battery. Both the battery and the inside compartment were fairly dry. *The moisture indicator labels were both bright red, indicative of warranty voided moisture exposure. The headphone jack and charge port were both completely breached and had allowed fluid into the mainboard and camera sub assembly boards. I completely disassembled the phone by removing the six screws and disconnecting the various flexcable connectors . The parts were thoroughly rinsed with a bottle sprayer filled with Anhydrous Isopropyl Alcohol, all parts were then blotted dry with absorbant paper. Final procedure included placing all components into a preheated coffee can filled completly full of silica gel dessicant. Everthing remained buried within the media and left to dehydrate for 12 continuious hour @ 105°F before final reassembly. The phone has been restored to 99% full functionality and all sensors and and rf subsections appear to funtion including GPS ,ACCELEROMETERS, MAGNEMOMETER, COMPASS, WIFI BLUETOOTH, CHARGING SYSTEM, DIGITIZER, *SPEAKER DISPLAY, BOTH CAMERAS FULLY FUNCTION AND METER EXPOSURE CORRECTLY.... I CAN PLACE . AND RECIEVE PHONECALLS BUT NOBODY CAN RECIEVE MY AUDIO THROUGH MY MICROPHONE NOR CAN I RECORD ANY AUDIO ON MY MEDIA APLLICATIONS. BASICALLY *I CANT TALK ON MY PHONE!!! ( thats why im yelling!!!) I have dissasmbled and reassmbled several times , taking care to seat all connectors and have even applied "De-Oxit" brand contact cleaner to all connectors including the spring pressure pads on the outer housing . I RETENSIONED THE GOLD SPRING PRESSURE PADS TO INSURE CONTACT WITH THE CORROSPONDING MATING SURFACES. I BELIEVE THAT THE LOWER LEFT CONTACTS (righthand side when observed from the rear) MATES TO A CONDUCTIVE RUBBER CONTACT ALONG THE LOWER OUTER BACK FRAME. Is this where the condenser mic element reside? Is this avail as replacement part and would this likely be damaged by liquid or ensuing treatment??? Perhaps the alcohol solvent damaged conductive carbon rubber pad? *I am not a tech especially a cellphone tech. I AM JUST A PLUMBER! But I am very technically inclined and am better equiped then most with a higher end DVMM, Audio signal generator, freq counter and even a basic crt 10 meg scope. (my multimeter has a serial port and software bundle for a better virtual digital sampling scope than the crt) MY PHONE IS 100% STOCK AND UNROOTED W/ LATEST TMOBILE FIRMWARE. I AM FULLY CAPABLE BUT JUST NEED SOME ADANCED HELP AND DIRECTION FOR WHAT IS SIMPLE REPAIRABLE MALFUNCTION. Can someone knowledgeable about this type of micro surfacemount technology please hold my hand and guide me with some "sound" advice.!

****ty :/ I got the ballistics, its got pretty damn good grip & same thing, besides usb port & 3.5mm jack its basicly sealed in there, even spilt pop on it enough to have a "pool" on the screen & it couldn't even get under the lip of the case xD
Never got it submerged tho xD glad its at least still workin for ye
& ye I can confirm the i7 heat xD I can't leave my PC on for more then a few hours, got it in the basement & I could literally use it as a space heater xD
I even got a fullsize HAF case & got a heatsync that holds 2 huge ass fans & 3 of the same size fans on the case, me thinks its the 1200w PSU & maybe my GPU xD
I still say my Phenom 965 build OC ~4.2 ghz with 8gb ram (can't buy 4gb sticks here, only 2 & donno a good reliable wholesaler with online purchasing)
Can kick my i7s @$$, the i7 is better for compiling huge projects, or even transcoding 2 DVD (eg: 2hr film to DVD is ~15min in nero 10)
But gaming was honestly about the same, if better in the sence of pure FPS, on the phenom, even played crysis maxed out (set to very high, exited & installed sh!t like real lifesys, & heavily customized), on 3 monitors @ 1080p (2x GTX 465 (ul470)) , that beast tanked everything, but finding wallpapers was a b!tch xD lol
Temped to go back just cuz the heat, its in my unused tower atm
Sorry for goin off-topic alil lol
Have u tryed underclocking? I'm tempted to go for hydrocooling but don't gut funds atm, & UC isn't & option for me I wish I could OC but my Intel's history says otherwise xD

Holy wall of Text Batman. I try to read it but then the wall of text starts screaming at me. Maybe if you use the wonderful invention called "paragraphs" with a touch of some "periods" and sprinkled with a little less Caps Lock key you might have a readable post. And maybe an actual response or two.
Call me crazy but I just can't read this without my brain hurting. :silly:
Glad you was able to save your phone.
Don't wanna get too off topic but my i7 idles around 36c.
Hi all, I have a dinc2 and it was dropped in water. It was removed very fast and put In rice. Thought I saved it but it started wigging and only goes to htc screen. I am able to volume down w/ power and get to hboot menu but that's about it. I plug in to comp and it doesn't recognize it. I have the htc sync on my comp. But nothing. Don't have ins. So I would like to get it running. Any and all help appreciated. Thanks, hp

Unfortunately there is not much else you can do for water. Maybe let it sit on a window seal in the sun with the back off. Just to try to get any remaining water out. More than likely it will not come back.
Are the water marks turned pink?

What happens when you get in recovery? Something like a failure to mount certain partitions?
Sent from my ADR6350 using xda premium
I have also had a similar experience with my Eris. I left it on a radiator with the back off and battery/ SD card removed for 24hrs and it came up fine even though my water markers were all triggered. Still works today.
Good luck!
Hi thanks for the replies. The water marks are not pink. When at the recovery window the recovery goes to the htc white screen. The crc calculates. Its been more than a week. The only reason I thought there might be some hope is because it does go to the recovery window. I also notice small pin holes in the back cover. Maybe a master reset or some hope. Thanks again for the help. hp

if the water marks are not turned you can file a warranty claim but that is risky due to not knowing what is inside the phone. The outter marks are harder to turn than inner water marks.
Try just letting it dry out like myself and others have said. You do not want to screw things up more messing with it vs letting it work its self out.

Not sure if it's been a week, but there could still be water in it. I dropped my old iPhone in the toilet, and by the time got it out, the screen was flickering and it was resting randomly. I took it entirely apart and found lots of spots where water reached. Dried them all out, and it still works fine to this day.
At this point, you have nothing to loose, so I'd sit down at a clean table with some small screwdrivers and start tearing it down. I'm sure there are diagrams on the web showing how it comes apart. In addition to water, because of the time that has elapsed, look for spots of corrosion - light green to white dust or flakes. If you see any, you can try brushing it away with a small paintbrush. If the water has all dried up and it's still not working, there has to be a short (or several) somewhere. You might get lucky, and like I said, you have nothing to loose.
Your honesty is much appreciated! Fraudulent warranty claims affect all of us.
If you still haven't gotten it working I recommend a bath in rubbing alcohol for about 30-40 seconds. The higher the alcohol percentage the better, I prefer the 90% stuff. Then another overnight sit in rice. Do both of these with the back cover and battery both removed.
I know it sounds a bit strange to put it in liquid but the alcohol will dilute the water and make it evaporate much faster. The rice will further accelerate this process. I have done it before with great results and at this point you can't do much more harm to it if it isn't even turning on.
Best of luck!

My friend spilled milk all over her phone, and it wouldn't turn on. I told her to put it in alcohol, and a month later it still works, if a little funny sometimes. But yes, it is important to remove the battery, and the sd card. And let it sit for a while afterwards.

Do you know what alcohol does to the LCD screen...
It left a permanent color band pattern on my 6800.
If you are going to put alcohol any where near it I would do it with a Q-Tip with the covers removed.
Find an old tire compressor, the 12V type and modify the intake of the compressor to connect a suction tube to it.
Swab the area around the components with a soggy Q-Tip (avoid running any on the LCD screen) and work it in with an old tooth brush (make sure the toothbrush is very clean, you don't want to smear any fluoride residue on the solder mask of the circuit board).
Then power up the pump and suck up the excess residue.
Wen prepping the unit, you may want to open all of those ribbon cable clamps.
That's the first place corrosion wants to grow.
Just be sure to handle those cables with care.
The copper traces within them is very thin.
If there is any corrosion on the contacts of the cables, lightly use a pencil eraser on them by holding it flat on a surface add rubbing in one direction away from the main part out to the end.
Good luck...

Hmm... I never thought about that but I can definitely see how damage to the screen is possible. I have never seen it happen to phones that I or anyone I know have tried it on but I have never tried it on a touchscreen phone, which could definitely be different.
Thank you for posting a much safer method!

Hi,
I dropped my S3 in a pool. I left it off for a couple days with the battery removed. After a couple days I decided to open up my phone. I noticed some corrosion in the back of the motherboard and cleaned it off with alcohol. My phone turns on but the screen doesn't. I looked at the motherboard and doesn't look like it fried. Is there a way for me to troubleshoot to figure it out why the screen is not turning on?
How long did it last in the pool? . Those days that it was off did you tried the old rice in a bag trick? Your probably doing more harm than good trying to keep turning it on might be paper weight now.. Or maybe it needs screen replacement. Btw did you turned it on before deciding on opening it to see if it was working?

Thank you all. I found that the LCD connector was corroded (had to use a magnifying glass). cleaned it heavily with alcohol and the screen was working again!
next problem is that the microphone is not working. How can i troubleshoot or repair this? i cleaned the microphone hole, still didn't resolve the problem. Is the mic something i can replace?
I believe they sell replacement mics on eBay for a few bucks. Not sure how hard the install would be, definitely worth a shot though!

Mine went in the pool for less than 10 seconds, and was in a casemate case, and its fine except the speaker, (i may have damaged it blowing into it to dry out the phone; but this is the 2nd dip this phone has had, and both time came out pretty much ok... new speaker assy cost me under $7 on ebay and these phones are SIMPLE to get apart.. going to try to clean connector on existing speaker now that you said it fixed your screen issues...
tl;dr
Mine got wet and works still too!
***EDIT*****--- alcohol worked, speaker is good now!

Try using the Ifixit app. It may help on properly installing the mic or at least give you a general idea of how to do so. It will also give the names to many of the parts on the motherboard.

Thanks, the app is pretty useful but doesn't have any information about replacing the mic.
Unfortunately stuff like that is often the put it in the way you take it out kinda fix. I'd be surprised if you found any guide on this one.

A small issue thats bugging me is that the top speaker grill gets easily clogged up when using the phone. as they are so small to even clean correctly and already mines looking horrible and dirty but no way to get into the grills to pick it clean or blow it out.
a fine needed however slow and sometimes painful as the needle needs to be so small you end up hurting your thumb.
tape over the grill doesnt seem to be collecting it
ive read compressed air may not work if it cant blow it up due to the size.
The only thing i can think of would be something like cyber clean putty so has anyone got some and does it work?

Worth trying a Dyson vacuum or the likes
I have a normal Dyson but and tried it but doesnt seem strong enough to get it out the gril. hair products probally didnt help the grill
I have an Axon 7 and I heard using a clean toothbrush to clean the speakers helps. Maybe the same can be done on the Razer phone
I have used a strong magnet to get metal and a kneaded eraser to get some of the rest. I would not use compressed air, blowing into the speakers may ruin it.
Flicking the holes with a needle a few times and then a very soft tooth brush has worked good enough nice to have a pair of awesome speakers again
Try getting a small bristles paint brush guys, I've had front firing speakers on phones since the HTC One M7 and it works so well

Thanks for the tip, got it looking a lot cleaner now with a normal tooth brush but had to apply a little more pressure and cover screen just to prevent any damage
Another method i found useful is using those sticky gel to pick up the dirt, works for me, call Gulu cleaner gel, pick them up from amazon real cheapie
