I have a grandfathered unlimited plan and I'm sitting at 6GB of data currently. I am being throttled; does anyone know if there is a way to bypass this? Maybe by changing APN settings?
I use this, and have never been throttled on my skyrocket. Keep in mind you can't use lte

Thanks. I've never come close to crossing the 5gb threshold even with LTE but this might be the way to go once past it.
Didn't work for me. Actually goes even slower if at all. I'm between 400-600kpbs with stock settings, less than 50 with these settings.

If you're throttled then there's nothing you can do, but if you want to use unlimited data use my settings. I don't live in an lte area so I just use this.

I have unlimited data. Its an LTE plan that doesn't get throttled till 5GB. Your settings make it worse for me. Why would I use them?
Thanks for trying, though. I looked around and saw that changing APNs used to work but not anymore.
How much data do you typically use?

How much data have you used with this APN? I would gladly live with HSPA+ to avoid the cap.

Exactly what I am wondering.
I'm pretty positive there is no possible way to bypass it. I'm sure it is all done by AT&T's servers and when you go past 5GB, it throttles you from their side. I don't think entering any APN settings will make any difference whatsoever. No matter what, if you go over 5GB of data you WILL be throttled. It's an automated thing. Using HSPA+ does NOT avoid any cap whatsoever. Again, once you hit 5GB of data, you are throttled until your next billing cycle.
My advice? Start using WiFi when at home, and anywhere you can. The only way you can truly go over 5GB is by tethering, or being a bandwidth hog and downloading CM9, or rom updates using your mobile data. Just suck it up and use your WiFi. WiFi gives better battery life anyway when you're at home.
Most I've been is 5, but people have reported over 20+ gb

Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Don't know where you got that info but it most definitely is unlimited, there is no 5GB cap.
There is no cap, and Sprint doesn't know about your tethering provided you're using a Market app.

i went well over 20gigs this month using 3g and my bill was still the same... no throttling either. your fine.
There is NO cap for 3g/4g on Sprints network at all. There are people using 11GB+ a month with no overage fees(I am not one of them). There is how ever a roaming cap of 300MB.
And one more thing since I'm on a family plan I got a call asking how I already used 1gb and that we now have a 5gb data cap its all over google.

nope, they did have a typo on sprint's website that said that but it was changed a long time ago. If they wanted to they could easily find out if you are tethering though.
The 5gb on 3g cap is for the data cards that you plug into a computer this does not apply to sprint phones now at&t & verizon....

as far as I can tell, its all unlimited, I had one month with almost 3gbs of roaming, no extra charge
There is no limit on 3G or WiMax data usage.
The sole limitations are as follows:
1) Your roaming data usage cannot be larger than your on-Sprint data usage, or else you will incur fees.
2) We will all smack you if you get ridiculous data usage, and Sprint then turns around and increases prices for unlimited data plans and/or eliminates unlimited data plans because of bandwidth hogs like you.
+1 There is ABSOLUTELY NO cap on phone data, only the broadband cards. I went through this last week with customer support then decided to ask our Sprint rep at Best Buy to confirm. The phone plan has absolutely no cap and if you use wifi tether they cant tell anything besides your phone is using data.
For anyone else wanting to argue this, hop on Live Chat with Sprint and verify
There may be a cap if he has a family plan. The $10 that every Evo owner used to moan about entitles us to no cap. However, Sprint has confirmed that any phone that doesn't pay this charge, including data cards, will be capped.
If his family is all on one plan, and only he has the Evo, they may be capping him somewhere.

What's the most data you've used in a cycle, and has anyone heard a peep from Verizon? My cycle starts on the 26th and I just cross the 10GB mark. Just curious, and thanks for your response.
Thanks for the reply, I'm wondering if at some point high usage will raise an eyebrow from Verizon. I mean, I'll probably break 15GB this month.

18 gigs? See, now that's what I'm talking about. I'll get close to that this month. Once we get internet set up I won't use so much, or maybe I'll just get an LTE phone and run everthing off that.
Wow I feel so much better now Thanks! Wifi at my house is so flaky I've started tethering my phone, but I stopped since I was worried about using too much data. I'm only at about 4 gb with a week and a half left on my billing cycle. Guess I don't have to worry
At school, I'm always on 3g, because the wifi is flaky. So I usually use 3 gbs. At home, I'll stay on wifi and use about a gig for when I'm out and about.

Verizon has openly stated that they (will/have already) cap the top 5% of data users. You *might* fall into that category or maybe will soon.

edit:
oops I mean throttle, not cap
Also it looks they will just be putting your data on lower priority. So if there's not too much 3G data demand in your area, you'll stream just as quickly.

I know, I'm just using that as an example. The pricing is ridiculous. I'm actually giving my wife the Inc and getting a Thunderbolt so we'll have two grandfathered unlimited plans. And we have LTE here, wonder how much data I'll use then.

I was around 16GB last month. I've only had a data plan for a few months now...the Dinc being my first smartphone. I'll be honest, I'm on a budget and I always get good 3G in my apartment (usually reach around 1Mbps, which is acceptable to me), so I dropped my $40/mo AT&T DSL in favor of using my phone as my main internet via tethering, and I haven't looked back. So glad I'm grandfathered with my unlimited data, but I'm totally prepared if my plans fall through and I have to go back to DSL...I figure it's just a matter of time.

Sucks that I can no longer use chrome but its whatevs really. It might have been a bug with the 1 second Leap Second that happened at the end of last month. Just a guess since the billing cycle for the 4GB above is from 4/1 to 4/1.

a packet is a packet, doesn't matter if it comes from a phone, a computer, or a leap frog toy that your 2 year old son wiped his boogers on. anyone with a clue would know you can torrent on your phone too. did you also forget that some people have done away with cable and simply stream netflix and hulu via HDMI from their phones to their TVs? what about some of the new games that require hundreds of MB of additional data to be downloaded to your sdcard before you can even play it? should they get charged tethering fees for not tethering even though they're using the same amount of data as someone who is?

Cellular data was never meant to be a replacement for your home internet connection.
If you're going to stream Netflix or Hulu to your TV from your PHONE connection, then yes, I think you should get charged for that.

Seems like it won't affect people using a vpn, since it's all routed through 1 ip and it doesn't seem like they are determining this by how much, but if they detect you using torrent apps and things like that. Still alot of the changes T-Mobile are making lately seem to be anti consumer, ie Jump not being every 6 months anymore, trying to do away with corporate plans before the backlash, raising prices on plans, and now this. It's making me want to jump to prepaid honestly.
Tmobiles throttle is ridiculous too. Im talking slower then 1x. Ive been throttled 3 times now in the past year and the max download speed for all 3 times was .15mbps and yes you read that correctly and I typed it correctly. POINT ONE FIVE Mbps for download and thats on LTE and HSPA

Seriously if they start doing this, I'll just go on straight talk for $45 a month with 3gb of data or Cricket.

My bad guise.
T-Mobile will waste tons of money and resources trying to do this. They're already a distant number 3 carrier...just when demonoid comes back torrents are once again on the radar.

Only "illegal" tethering and torrenting everyone else is fine

it says "they could have their data speeds reduced for the remainder of their billing cycle" not that they WILL
I get throttled pretty much every month. And it sucks especially at super slow speeds.

I've only gotten 4G around town the past few days where before I had full LTE. Seems legit.

well I called last month and they bumped me up for free as a courtesy. But 3gbs is not enuff especially when youre on the road and alot of free time :-/
And throttled again til September 3rd.
Went to xda.com took 3 minutes to load. But yet I run a speed test says 30s. So tmo obviously doesn't throttle some connections like speedtest. Which is shady as hell in my book.

Damn if they are gonna throttle you, you might as well go prepaid on Cricket or Straight Talk. $45 for unlimited talk, text, and 3gb of data each month.

I only pay 10 bucks a month for unlimited talk and text and 3gb of data
Plus ATT throttled Cricket to 8mb download on LTE at all times.
