Issue with Talk - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

So I use Talk all of the time... on my current phone, my last phone, my tablet, and my computer. I noticed something odd a few weeks back that is still occurring.
I was signed into Talk on my phone (like I always am), and my computer (like I always am). I left my room and sent a message from my phone to a friend and noticed that a guy I hadn't talked to in ages was online. I figured I'd say something to him when I sat back down at my PC. So two minutes later when I got back into my room, my PC showed that he was offline. My phone however still said that he was online.
He has shown as being online and active (green) on my phone 24/7 ever since, though he does not show as online on my home PC, work PC, or tablet.
I've cleared the data in Talk and the problem persists. I've even full wiped system, cache, and data and installed new ROMs and re-flashed GApps (I like to try pretty much every ROM), and the problem occurs in every ROM that I use.
I even restored to stock yesterday (for something different) and checked Talk. Sure as ****, he showed as online, and I know that this problem first appeared after I had moved off of a Stock ROM to the various AOSP ROMs.
I even signed out of Talk on all of my devices, then signed back in... same issue. My phone is convinced that this guy is online 24/7, while all other computers / devices properly see that he is not online.
Talk functions perfectly other than this issue. Its annoying, so I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
Thanks in advance!

ADB sees dozens of EVO's but 1 fails

I work at a major electronics store as a 2nd job and the majority of people there own EVO's so I end up rooting multiple per week. Its become so often that Ive downloaded all the tools, guides, roms, add-ons, and themes on my laptop to make life easier on me. So far every one of them has gone flawlessly, until last night.
All drivers are loaded and all cables etc work fine. I loaded a coworkers last night and for some reason ADB refuses to see his EVO. Typing "adb devices" returns an empty result and no commands work stating "no devices found". I checked his software version and its the 3.29.651.5 version that Ive rooted dozens of times before. I load my phone on my system and it shows up fine, I loaded another unrooted evo on my system and again it shows up fine. His is the only one that wont load. USB debugging is on and its set to charge only. The only difference with his phone is it was set to htc sync by default when plugged into a pc but I manually selected charge only.
Has anyone seen this before or know how to resolve it?
And before anyone asks, no I dont charge anyone anything to do this. I do it to show people what you guys here are capable of doing. 2 nights ago I rooted a sprint sales rep from my local store after he saw mine when my wife got her new phone. He called me yesterday begging me to not do anyone elses there because the whole store was going nuts over his phone wanting to know how the hell he did it and he was loving rubbing it in.

[Q] Sporadic Incoming Calls, My Phone Number Unknown...

Let me start this question with a big thanks to all the developers/etc. out there. The work being done is AMAZING!
I am a new "rooter", but learning fast. I am running Cyanoginger 1.1 on my MT3GS. I have noticed a few things that aren't quite right, and I am unsure if they are related to each other, or to Cm 6.1.1, or ~ginger 1.1, or...
1. Incoming phone calls seem to sporadically go to voicemail instead of the phone. My phone can be sitting on my desk with full bars, I'll call my phone from my desk, it'll ring once or twice and jump to voicemail (nothing shows up on the MyTouch). I'll call again 10 seconds later, and it goes to my phone. Very sporadic (maybe 1 in 20 calls?)
2. My phone number shows Unknown in Settings > About phone > Status. I read in a few forums that this may be the case untill you place/receive a call, but mine is still showing unknown.
3. My market purchases are no longer integrated with carrier billing. It's asking for a credit card instead of automatically billing me at T-Mobile.
Like I said, I'm a noob at rooting/modding, but I learn quick Any help with these issues would be greatly appreciated!

The unknown number thing has to do with cm6.1.1. It shouldn't affect you anyway. For the first issue, probably t-mobile issue, neither your phone nor your ROM. Happens to me on all my phones, even my dumbphones.
The market thing is something that you give up when you flash a custom ROM. I think there might be something that can tie market to your tmobile account, but I can't find it again, it was mentioned in a thread recently.
Thanks for the quick response!
On points 2 and 3, I guess that's just the way it is. Little things, I can definitely deal.
On the first point, I just want to make sure this isn't happening because of how I flashed new roms, or how I upgraded the radio, etc.
FWIW, here's the process I used:
- rooted phone with adb/file copy, etc., etc.
- booted to ESPRIMG.zip (oops, rebooted, no backup of system!)
- booted to Clockwork
- cleared data, cleared cache, flashed CM 6.1.1, flashed gapps, rebooted
- went back to clockwork flashed radio from 7.07.(????) directly to 7.09.35.10, rebooted
- "stumbled" across Cyanoginger 1.1...
- booted to Clockwork, cleared data, cleared cache, flashed to Cyanoginger 1.1
The phone prior to rooting never had any issues receiving calls, but who knows, maybe it's because I'm staring at it, maybe it's solar flares, maybe I've angered the cell phone gods...ok, humor's "off" a bit today
If you have any further thoughts, let me know; otherwise thanks for your help! I really appreciate it!
Yeah that all sounds right. I haven't ever had issues with my phone number showing up, it seems to only happen to some people, and like you said, normally it goes away after placing or receiving a call. Who knows. I don't think it affects any apps though. I could be wrong about that, not sure. It might be your sim card, which would explain some calls not going through as well.
I know there is a way to tie the market to your t-mobile account, I just can't remember at the moment. I googled around, couldn't find anything. I think it's called market fix or something rather. I could be thinking of something else though. Frankly I like paying with my debit card better, it was never a huge deal for me, so I never thought too much into it.

I know exactly what you're talking about... I just can't seem to find it either. It was in a thread recently, like you said.
Maybe it's just vanished
I'm gonna keep searching though.
EDIT: So I was starting to flip out, cause I could not for the life of me find the thread...
But I decided to go to my phone and see if maybe I could just find the app in the market. Then I saw that I had already searched for it before, because I actually have the same issue. I just never downloaded it and tested it out.
It's called "Market Enabler"
I'm going to download it now and test it myself.
EDIT 2: Or maybe that's not it. I don't know, I can't seem to figure it out. Maybe MusicMan can take a look? I could have sworn this was an app suggested for that, but it just looks like it makes it so you can see apps that aren't on certain carriers.

It could just be that we were thinking of something else and such an app doesn't exist. I'll look some more when I get home

Well, I "stumbled" across the solution to #2. As far as I've heard from others so far, it's purely cosmetic, but...
Go to Settings > Call Settings > Additional Settings > My phone number and enter the number. Now when you go to Settings > About phone > Status it will show the number you entered.
Again, this may be purely cosmetic, and I've noticed if you reboot, the setting gets wiped. Strange...but there you go...
Sorry to bring up this issue back up but I just recently Rooted my phone as well and am having the same problem with sporadic calls not coming to my phone.
For example, last night my father told me that he tried to call me at least 3 times in a row and it would go straight to voicemail, however today he called me (like 2 mins ago) and the phone rang as normal. Heres what I've noticed on the phone:
-the phone will drop all bars sporadically for no apparent reason, as I have never had any service issues in my house.
-it does this when its been idle for a couple of minutes and as soon as I wake it up it will show 0 bars then jump to the normal 2-3 I usually get at my place.
-whenever the bars drop to 0 my 3g/HSPA service will still show as normal
I'm not completely new to Rooting (Rooted my original G1), however my last experience with it was back on CM4.1 on my G1, so there may be a o couple of things I missed
Thanks in advance for any help!
Hi, I've a similar problem: on outgoing calls anyone on any phone is able to see my number, they always get calls from "unknown" from my phone. I use wolfbreak's rom with cyanogen and I've allready set in the settings the option to show my number on outgoing calls, but doesn't work. how can I do?

had this prob too even if u set it in cm you still have to call your carrier to get them to make you number show

What would you do?

Ok guys, been a long battle. I spent a combined four and a half hours on the phone with sprint yesterday morning. We did soft resets, hard resets. We checked ESN and other numbers I didn't know existed. We checked towers as well.
And after all this, I still have issues making calls. When I go to make a call at home, it automatically disconnects even though I have full bars and my data is working. I also cannot receive calls, as everyone texts me saying that it is going straight to voice mail. I only really go three places.(work, home, gf's place) The problem occurs at both my place and work. However, it doesn't seem to happen when I am on the road, and it only happens sometimes at my gf's.
I took the phone to Sprint with a ticket number given to me by a second tier manager? The sprint store rebooted my phone a few times, tried to make a few calls. Of course it works. So their rule is, if they cannot replicate the problem, they cannot help.
So I guess I am asking what you guys would do. The only two option I see are:
1. Buy a used EVO and finish out my contract(14months) hoping nothing goes wrong with it.
2. Take the early penalty, close my account and go to Verizon like the rest of my friends whose GPS's and calling "just work".
I would hate to leave sprint cause they have the best unlimited deal out there. But this is the second "top of the line" phone I have bought with them that has been a disaster. And both of them seemed to work flawlessly for the first couple months I had them.
By the way, I am on stock EC05, and I have been ever since it EC05 came out. I am not rooted or anything. It was working fine till about Friday.
Do you have TEP?
Wow, try taking out the sd card and use the phone to make a call. SD cards can make the phone do some funky things. If that works; then put it back in, connect the phone to your computer, copy all the contents to your computer; format the sd card and copy the contents back to the sd card.
change to sprint only network (settings - wireless networks - mobile networks - system select .. choose sprint only)
uninstall app 3rd party applications; perhaps something running is the culprit
If still no joy; I would root it and try a custom ROM. Maybe a file got corrupted at some point and that is causing the disconnections.
I really like the one I am on, its worked beautifully.
I'd be happy to help you through the root process if it gets to that point.
Good luck
It doesn't matter whether I have it or not, they rebooted the phone, brought up the dialer, made one call(he might have made two, one of the other people was talking to me) and sent me on my way. If they can't replicate the problem, then their policy is to not do anything. I even asked them if I could make a video of it first hand when I get home, and they basically said that won't change anything cause they have to be able to replicate the problem first hand.

I will try SD card when I get home. I don't have any third party apps, as the technician on the phone hard reset my phone like 3 times. I tried every custom rom, and I even tried to go back to DI18. All of them had the same problem, so I am guessing it is hardware related. Again, data is working correctly, just seems to be something with the calling hardware.

If you have TEP - don't even bother with taking to the store any longer. Just complain enough over the phone and you should be able to get someone to send you a new one.

Unfortunately I cannot really wait for them to send me a phone. I need to get something today, as this phone is also my work phone. Customers do not like going straight to my voicemail :/
After a tech on the phone with Sprint screwed my phone up even worse, had me stuck in an activation loop. He told me to bring it to a Sprint store. Well this was at night so I Odin'd to stock DI18 and let it do the OTA and that cleared up the loop. It may work for you and save you grief.
Do you BONSAI?
DDTM is not on is it??

I've heard of similar things. I helped someone troubleshoot the problem and came up with it had to be the tower. They called again to customer service and of course they said that nothing is wrong with the tower. I think that they called again to make a report to check out the tower near their house. They did that a few times. I don't know how long it took to fix the situation. I do notice lately that, even though signal strength was okay before, it's better now.
If you have another sprint phone, if you activate it, does it do the same thing? This might be one of those instances that if you complain enough, maybe they might give you one of those devices they have (I forgot what it's called) that you hook up to your home internet and it acts like a mini tower at home. I've heard of stories that after enough complaining enough, they'll just give you one. If the phone still does it then it's the phone that's flaky.
When you talk to someone, make it clear you use this phone for work and if people can't reach you, you will lose clients. If you start losing clients because of this then you will be forced to go to another carrier. If they say you'll have to pay etf then tell them you won't because it isn't your fault that you can't make or receive calls at work and home.
This phone or their equipment or service isn't working properly and you're losing customers because of this.
Here's another idea. Find someone else that has sprint. Have them go by your work and home and see if they can send or receive calls. If they can then its your phone, if they can't then it's the towers.

[Q] Experiencing major issues with any custom rom. Please help!

((if this is in the wrong place or has been covered before, I apologize...))
Hello all.
I just became the new owner of a family member's Samsung Galaxy S3 (AT&T). Already owning and tinkering with two xperia Ion's I wanted to have a little more freedom and experience Kitkat on the GS3.
I had no experience in unlocked bootloaders and all that, so I figured that I would let the Cyanogenmod Auto-Installer do the work for me and install CM11 on my device.
It worked great initially! No problems whatsoever aside from minor glitches here and there. As soon as I started installing some more apps and Xposed modules, I noticed that things were getting odd.
Eventually, my phone wouldn't connect to google's play services whatsoever. Despite countless resets of the phone itself and my modem/router, nothing seemed to help. Flushing the cache and dalvik didn't help either, nor did a factory reset. The issue kept coming back.
Thinking that perhaps another rom wouldn't have the problem, I installed C-Rom (which was based on 4.4.4 KK). It ran BEAUTIFULLY! It is sure one hell of a rom. But then, not too long after I had everything installed and running the way I wanted it to, it had the same errors as before.
I don't know how to explain the error other than the phone just generally messing up. I don't recall it ever having those issues on stock, but then again, it wasn't my phone on stock, and the first thing I did upon receiving it was put a custom rom on it.
But the error can only be explained as a general f***-up of the entire OS. Commands run brutally slow (I will launch the flashlight and it wont turn on until seconds, even minutes later. Alternatively, text messages take eons to send and receive, which I am positive is not an error on the AT&T side of things). Then, whenever I try to download or install an app from the play store, the application will download partially and then stall for what feels like eons. Some of the applications just stop there, and some I will find installed on the device some 30 minutes later. Not to mention that the signal icons on the quick setting tiles are all turned orange for some bizarre reason. Another bizarre issue is that no matter what, I can never launch the terminal to execute an htop, logcat, or anything! The terminal just stalls and eventually crashes, while it worked fine before.
I've checked online for errors similar to this, but haven't found anything that has helped the phone. Anyone out there who is willing to give this a crack or just point me in the right direction?
Thanks in advance.

It sounds like you're the modules you're installing are crashing your system. I'd suggest you do a clean flash of w/e rom you wanna rush (you seem to like C-rom) and run it clean for a few days. You can install apps and such but don't restore system apps and don't install modules.
If it runs fine after a few days, you can cherry-pick the modules you wanna use (make sure they're made for the sammy phones). Install one or two, test for a couple days and so on. You'll eventually find which one is messing with your system (if that's actually what's causing the problems).
All seems to be well now. I've isolated the problematic app after slowly restoring all my app data one at a time. I have since moved to a different rom (SOKP) and everything is going running smoothly! Surprisingly, it wasn't Xposed causing the issue, but a market app that displays system info similar to conky on Linux computers. Once I installed it, the system just crapped out. Signals dropped, the terminal froze, and none of my apps seemed to work properly. But once I uninstalled the app and reset my phone, all was well.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

SIM card recognized but no service

TL;DR
Moto Z2 Play - XT1710-07
The phone recognizes the SIM card but there is no signal (no service). Tried several things, including flashing a custom ROM. I'm considering buying a new motherboard and changing it myself, but first want to know if anyone knows more about this issue or has an idea/suggestion.
Edit: As an added bonus, something that only now I realized. Now when I charge it, it gets EXTREMELY hot. Like I-can't-even-use-it hot. I used to use the phone while charging all the time, but now I can't even hold it. Seems like the problem is when it tries go past 80% charge. It gets super slow, keeps trying and gets hot. Now I don't know if it's a software problem caused by the various flashings or if it's something that would remain even after swapping the motherboard.
Edit 2: I did a full discharge of the phone and recharged it while turned off. It seems to have normalized the battery problem
Edit 3: RIP. I tried to remove the screen before deciding about buying a new board. In the process, I ended up tearing the digitizer flat cable apart. Now I don't think it's worth it buying both a new screen and a motherboard.
The full story and things I've tried
My phone was working all nice and dandy until it stopped having signal/service. Wifi works normally, but anything related to the SIM card doesn't, like phone calls or mobile data.
A list of things I've tried somewhat in order (both of time and of complexity):
* My SIM in another phone: it works normally, so the problem is not the SIM itself
* Another SIM in my phone: it doesn't work, so the problem is definitely the phone
* Using the second SIM slot
* Changing "Preferred Network Type" between the available ones (4G, 3G, 2G, including Enhanced 4G LTE Mode on and off): this one and the next two items don't really make sense to me, since these options seem to be only related to mobile data (4G/3G internet) connection, not to phone calls which is also not working, but I tried them anyway
* Manually selecting the network: Errors with "Selected network unavailable" and, after trying to register for a while, toasts another error saying "Can't connect to the network, try again later"
* Manually selecting the APN: Tried both selecting between the two options available and manually adding an APN by googling the correct info for my carrier
* Simply booting into fastboot and restarting bootloader: a video on YouTube claimed that it was a temporary solution and that I'd need to do it every time it lost signal. But it didn't even work the first time
* Disabling CQATest and then restarting bootloader (and also clearing its data/cache and removing its permissions): a lot of videos on YouTube claimed this was a solution, including for other Motorola phones. Apparently CQATest prevents the phone from working properly in some scenarios. But I think only when you de-google your phone? Not sure. All I know is that it didn't work either
* Using the phone connected to the wall charger: I think this was another YouTube suggestion, and it actually worked for a few minutes. But I guess it was just a coincidence, as it never worked again
Now for some more... "forceful" attempts:
* Factory Reset: Not sure where I saw this suggestion, but it was pretty much the next logical step. Gathered courage, backed up all my data, etc, aaand... nothing again
* Flashing another ROM: Guess it was here at XDA that I read that it was a problem with Motorola's stock ROM. That, paired with my belief that it could still be related to CQATest being installed, I again gathered more courage to flash a custom ROM. I chose LineageOS and found out that it was no longer supported, but decided to install the last official release. I also read that the problem was the Pie modem firmware, so it all seemed to be going fine since the last official release is Oreo 8.1. I flashed it and BAM it worked! ... for a few minutes and never again. I messed around with LineageOS, tried some of the previous things again, but nothing.
Then, I tried to restore my TWRP backup but it didn't work. So I searched a bit more and downloaded the Stock Pie ROM, flashed it, and closed the bootloader. And then I realized the restore probably didn't work since my backup was made using Pie and my phone was on Oreo. Maybe some files/partitions were missing? Also, when I was creating my TWRP backups, I tried creating a full system image backup but it kept erroring. Only later I realized the problem was that the USB Drive was FAT32 and the full system image was bigger than 4GB. Oh, well, now I know.
So now that I'm with my phone pretty much back on square one, I take it to an authorized repair shop. The clerk said that it was a common problem, and that sometimes it could be solved "by software" and that they'd try that. The other option was to change the whole motherboard, which they didn't do because it was "not worth it" and "almost the full price of a new phone". After two days, my suspicions were confirmed: they didn't fix it with their "by software" attempt. At least I didn't have to pay anything.
When I got the phone back, I put the SIM in again and it showed the icon as if there was signal. But when I tried to call someone, the signal disappeared again. I tried searching a bit more, went through all pages of Q&A here at XDA forums and there were like 3 posts regarding loss of signal. All without any response. On YouTube, I found some videos offering a suspicious .bat file. Upon inspection, it merely erased the modemst1 and modemst2 partitions and then wiped user data and cache. I tried it, nothing to lose. Also didn't work.
Now I'm contemplating a few options:
By watching some disassembly videos, I saw that, when opened, the phone has some parts that act like antennas. I thought that maybe those were not properly connected to the board? Maybe they got dislodged during a fall? Seems unlikely tho, since they are screwed in. I searched for a new motherboard to buy and it's a reasonable price. But I'm afraid it'll have the same problem (or develop it in a short time) since I can't find anywhere what the true cause of the problem is.
Another option is to just give up, buy a new phone and use this one as if it was a "small tablet" lol
So, do you guys have any other suggestions or ideas as to what might be the problem? Maybe a tip like "solder a wire to this spot to create a make-do antenna"? I don't really know where else to search.
If not, thanks anyway for those who read it all
