Why would an OTA update be unsafe?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2

they're safe
i think he means root wise. you can take the update but it will break root if you have it so flash this after the update http://k0nane.info/rom/ecm/TeamEpic-Root-from-Recovery-v5.zip so you can keep root

Yes. If you have the stock recovery

I'm rooted with stock recovery and received OTA. Before I proceeded with the install, I removed the one additional app I had placed in system\apps (I heard any mods in there may prevent successful installation of OTA). The install of 4.2.1 went fine. Although it seems I've lost root. I can no longer mount the system dir to put that one app back. Easy enough to re-root.

Just make sure you back up your internal storage if you need to unlock the bootloader again. I learned the hard way that this wipes all of your data.

Root issue

Just updated my brothers Sprint S3 with the new Jellybean update, is it not rootable yet??? I don't have an SIII myself and sometimes you can't tell whether a thread on rooting has been updated yet or not.
It's on official 4.1.1 and it says Qualcomm Secure boot is ENABLED.
Can I get it disabled? and Is there a root method yet without having to flash a rooted ROM in odin?
I simply want to obtain root. Not install cwm or twrp or anything else.
This is Q & A so I am asking a Q and hoping for an A! lol
Yes it's rootable, I just did mine. All the info you need is right here.

I don't know the technical answer to that, but my new phone that I got last week with the latest firmware, I was able to obtain root using that method.

Any version of the Sprint Galaxy S3 can be rooted easily. I used the Team Epic Root From Recovery method. Super easy.

4.1.2 update

Is it okay if I update if I'm rooted and is there any reason not to?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk 2
If you update with kies you will loose your root. You will hate to root it again.
Also, if you have a custom recovery the update will set the stock recovery.
But for the update, the multi windows is nice but not all app are compatible.
That's why I went to a custom rom with unlimited multi window.

So ota ill keep root? I also read the update caused weird battery life
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk 2
I don't know for ota because my status was modified and I was not able to get the update. I had a custom recovery, that's why.
For the battery life, I can't help you for this. I kept this rom for about one day and now I run the international "custom" rom with unlimited multi window.

[Q] Odining back to vpalen from mk3

Is it possible, or will this just brick the phone?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk
If you took the OTA to 4.3 you cannot use Odin to go back to previous versions. You can root and flash any version you want, as long as you aren't trying to go backwards with the bootloader, aka mk3 bootloader > md4, etc.
As metalfN78 said, yes it will brick your phone If you use Odin. You can flash ANY version through recovery though.

Damn, I didn't accept the ota on my s3, but my wife did
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk
You can still flash previous versions of Android on hers, just not with Odin. As long as you are using a custom recovery and flash roms then it is alright.
But won't custom recovery/rooting trip the Knox warranty bit?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk
Yea
Oh well, that'll teach her to not accept ota updates unless she checks with me first
