when the update came out i try to update but i couldnt bcause it went to recovery and then when the update was starting i got an android with an exclamation mark. so then i flashed the radios and after a while the update notification started to show up again? i dont know what to do can someone help me out

yes... lol. its rooted, changed soft keys, recovery, kernel.. i kinda knew it was because of that but i dont know how to go back to stock.

Well there you go. You can't have anything changed in the system if you plan on accepting the OTA update.
If you want to accept the OTA, you need to flash back to the stock images (everything back to 100% stock except bootloader unlock is OK) and wait for the OTA notification again.

Or check now on update section (settings /system) but I would recommended stay rooted that only bad thing about rooting is the a lot rooms don't have prl update and is annoying to flash a stock from just to do that

You can use Odin go to the developer section and stickies there is a good thread and video by qbking to take you back to stock

Yes. Returning to stock you'll have to completely wipe the device. How else would you get rid of all the **** you changed?
I'm just asking cause before with my evo 4g I could've restored and my memory card wouldn't get erased and if I restore my nexus it does so its different.

If you do a factory reset with CWM or something it doesn't wipe the virtual SDcard.
The reason why it wipes when you flash to stock is you only have 1 partition internal storage that must be wiped when you install the OS...
Any particular reason for this?
Some people wanna do their own mods rather than install a custom ROM.
Well, have have done installs for many custom roms, but this phone is just for my wife, so I just wanted to make sure there isn't any harm in rooting for additional apps etc. like titanium if she is just going to want stock. Do I have it right?

No, you don't have to change anything if you root it. Its all optional changes. You can just have root and use root apps, you don't have to change the system at all if you don't choose to.
But if she just wants stock... why are you rooting it in the first place?
lol because she's going to want more reliable ways to back up app data among other things and, TO ME, Titanium is the ONLY way to go.
Why change the stock ROM?
Because developers make some pretty great modifications to the UI, kernel, and such.
Make your phone reflect your personality, not the service provider's. (bleh)
After a while people might want to change, sometimes not, but if you already have it rooted it will be easier on you.

If all you want is a good backup, just make a nandroid and transfer a copy to your computer.

Yes.
At this point, the potential for disaster while rooting is minimal as long as one follows all steps correctly.

Nope, no root required for nandroid.
Keep in mind though: a nandroid backup backs up your entire ROM as is. If you restore it you are back to where you were. TB backs up your apps, so you can restore them on the same ROM or on a different one.

You will need to download it yourself (or move it from /cache to /sdcard) and then it will install with your custom recovery. It will not install over-the-air with a custom recovery.
I have a quasi related question. The Xoom got Jelly Bean recently, and even though I wiped my device and did a factory reset from recovery, all of my music I had put in the internal SD card was still there. Why wasn't all of the internal erased, and could I expect this when I install Jelly Bean on my wife's Nexus?

Additionally, when ROM installations insist on CWM, why would they also have instructions to put the ROM zip on the external card if the internal is safe?

I have a rooted galaxy nexus and went to install the ota jb update. It gave me the red sign in cwm and said failed whole package sign or something like that.. now it says no update available. Anyone know what I should do to get jb update without wiping?

you clearly modified system files. you need to find the files you modified and change them out to ones that are unmodified.
Yeah.. I changed recovery from boot.p to recoveryfromboot.p.bak as that's what a tec said to do after rooting if cwm didn't stick... can I change it back without breaking root?

That's not the reason why. You must have changed your radio or kernel or recovery. The ota update won't install ota with cwm

you are confusing root with a custom recovery. they are not the same. to get root, you have to have a custom recovery (least on anything 4.0.4 or higher). you do not need root to have a custom recovery.
if you take the OTA, you will lose root anyways and then you will also lose your custom recovery.
So I have to wait for a rom build and flash it to have jb with root??

I think there are plenty of JB roms out there from the announcement in June. I could be wrong, but if you're just looking for the new radios, I think they can just be flashed over your current setup.

That confused the hell out of me.. and I'm not dumb. Lol. The second one doesn't mention toroplus from what I read.
I think I'll just update and reroot.. my problem is.. do I have to change that system file back to its original? And then do I have to download the update from somewhere BC my phone says up to date now?

1st off i want to say sorry if someone already posted this question, but i couldnt find a answer. my sis galaxy nexus on 4.1.1 and i wanted to know if theirs a way to update to 4.1.2 or maybe even the latest 4.2.2 but with out losing any data. the phone is stock unlock and rooted. i know i can just put a rom but she doesnt want to lose anything so can i update it?

Download titanium back up. Back up all app data. Make sure your on the latest clockwork mod or twrp. Wipe data factory reset flash mmuzzy 4.2.2 rom let apps restore from play store then restore app data from titanium back up and profit.

I think Titanium is your best bet... After I flash a rom I restore apps and data (not system apps) before I even sign into my Google accounts, it's never failed, I've have backups that I've used since Titanium came out, it's never failed me and I've never had any issues with it...

Trust me ANY other custom ROM is usually ALOT better than pure stock, she will appreciate it mor as an update!
Any custom rom will have advantages over plain stock.
I also have a similar question. Is there any way to stay on stock unrooted 4.1.1 and get the 4.2 lock screen?

I am in 4.2.2 and tried many times to OTA update to 4.3 but it always failed.
Looking in the ROM Manager first screen says that my ROM is not set up to receive OTA.
There are no other options as these are for premium users of the app.
What can I do?

Well I tried to do so using the nexus root toolkit by Wugfresh but it doesn't seem to work for 4.3 yet.
My other option is to download the file from Google and flash it with the Gal.Nex. toolkit.
As you see I am not very good with commands etc and I am trying to do it the easy way..

something isnt stock. it could be the radio, kernel, some system file you modified.
When it errors out it should tell you where the problem is.

There are some system apps that I have deleted or freezed. It might be it?
In another thread here in xda I read that the device should be in stock recovery in order to accept the OTA update. Now mine is in clockwork mode.
Is this right?

Sigh. CWM doesn't stop otas, modifying /system does that.
If you removed system apps then that's your problem. You will never be able top install the OTA in any way
