Sorry if this is a retarded question, but since Samsung dropped the 4.0 source for our phone, and JB 4.1 source code was released, does this mean that people can start compiling fully functional Jelly Bean roms for the epic 4g touch?
If so, is anyone working on one?
You've got it wrong. The samsung source that was released is ICS kernel source. That doesn't really mean much for jelly bean.
There is work being done to try to port it nonetheless.

I thought that you can run roms on older kernels...for example, CM9 is currently running on a GB kernel. Since 4.0 and 4.1 don't have as big of a coding jump, couldn't you run 4.1 on a 4.0 kernel?

the first couple of ICS ALPHA builds i think was running a hacked together GB kernel, then when the first leaks of ICS drop for our phones thats when the devs started using the pre build kernels that came in the leak ROMs. ICS and JB still uses a 3.0 kernel so from the source that was release devs can make JB ROMs for our phone from it, thats what CM devs have been doing to get preview builds of JB/CM10 on some phones. anyone can correct me if am wrong because am still learning about these stuff lol....but i think thats it.
well team hacksung just released a preview of JB for the international gs2. So that means that they are making progress on it and it must'nt be all that much of a change from cm9 to cm10. as JB has been out for what, almost a month now. and some people are getting cm10 previews, alphas and betas. so it must not be that big of a change in kernels. Of course i could be completely wrong in all of this, just IMO. well probably have cm10 sooner than we all think. our devs are awesome.

+1 Well there is a difference of radios but I also dont understand how minor differences can make it so difficult to port from. You would think with the exception of radios & different key mapping that the architecture of both phones are exact, but then again I'm not a dev so there's probably some factor in there I'm missing.

The screen size is a minor difference. But, cdma and GSM radio is the big issue when it comes to porting anything from the international to us. At least that's the impression I get from the many threads I read.

Lets not forget half of our AOSP Developers do not even have this phone or acquired/reacquired the phone after the fact and do not have service on the device. Darchstar is no longer with Sprint and bought another E4GT with donations. Chris41G does not have the phone at all apparently.

In most cases this is right but doesn't necessarily need to happen. Look at the g2x..... They will most likely never get ics from lg and cm arcee compiled a just about stable ics rom that is beautiful and works great. And thats with tegra being closed source to so drivers had to be a pain also. So we could see nightlys soon who knows we have no clue they could come out this week for all we know
I am sitting with a Skyrocket CM7 rom that isn't quite finished and isn't ever going to be finished just because I can't stand anything but...

Yeah, I doubt that CM7 will ever be released in more than alpha. The CM team decided to go straight to CM9 with this device which means they will not do CM7 and it doesnt seem like anyone outside of CM team would bother since nobody has up til now and I am pretty sure the chances of a proper CM7 build will only go down when CM9 is released. All you can do is hold tight.

Any idea who'd be fastest or what the turnaround time would be with adopting the Sammy ICS drivers? I know a stock rooted Rom usually drops fast but I haven't kept up with CM so I don't know where they're headed with the T989. I tried out one ICS ROM that worked well but the two snags (lag and vmail problems) I had were pretty major and had to go back to stock rooted.

That wouldn't be too bad I guess since I'd get wifi calling and still could remove bloat. CIQ would still be there though. Wouldn't that need Apex or another 3rd party launcher instead of the stock ICS version?
What I really want is a pure Nexus style vanilla ICS ROM. That may not be available until the source comes out. I was thinking devs could get at Samsung's ICS drivers and processes that make it more stable but that may take awhile.

At the IO google said that they would release JB developer tools for JB. So will we have the full potential of 4.1 JB?
I ask this because JB probably won't be released (offically) for our phone.
PS: do you think the performance boosts of JB will have an significant effect on our phone? It seemed to on the nexus.
Probably not. We don't have kernel source for ICS as it is, even though our phone is slated to get it, but I wouldn't count on it so getting JB to work on our phone is highly unlikely.

I'm 76% sure we will get ICS. They have it for the S and they said they would release it at the end of August.
You must consider that JB is just an updated ICS. So we don't need an offical JB to have it running 100%. And Google will have a dev tool out that may help us. Lastly they have a dump floating around. Chances are that we can use that to help us build a 100% working ASOP JB build. But this all depends on when or if we get ICS.
Can a dev jump in and let me know of my logic is correct

And you believe everything HTC and Verizon tells you...? that Dev tool is worthless if it doesn't include specific Dinc 2 files that goes once again back to kernel source. That dump isn't as useful to us as you think otherwise we would have fully working ICS on our phones from ICS dumps. Trust me, if it were as simple as you believe it is, our devs would have done it already. The situation with JB is pretty much the same as ICS if not worse since there is also the issue of resizing XHDPI JB to WVGA because there are no JB phones with WVGA resolution. Don't quote me on that last part, but I'm sure a dev can correct me or explain it better.

Nexus S will receive the update and it is a single core WVGA phone. So, I'll be looking closely on feedback from Nexus S users. That should give us an idea of the performance gains that we can theoretically expect, if any, over ICS. And there is no need to be overly cynical about HTC and their promise of giving us ICS. They said they will by August end and so just wait for it. Regardless of what may have happened in the past, you will just burden your mind with needless thoughts...

They said to be determined by the end of August which is a big difference. And honestly at this point I don't really care if we get official ICS anymore I'm pretty content with the work that our devs have done so far without it, if official ICS is so important to some of these users they might as well have just stayed stock and waited for an OTA. I don't mean to take this out on you personally, but these threads about JB and "perfect and bugless" ICS roms have gotten ridiculously out of hand. Its been clarified by reps at both HTC and VZW that what they meant was that the date is to be decided but that we will have it by the end of August. Take that for what you will, as I don't believe there has been anything official that clarifies this. I am pretty confident that we will get it and can only hope that we will get kernel source soon after.
Back to the OP's question, I highly doubt that we will have a 100% working JB rom anytime soon considering we still have issues on ALL of our ICS roms. Once we have official ICS our awesome dev's will probably be able to get JB working well pretty quickly.

HTC has to release kernel source regardless because of the Chinese OTA they released. It might be as late as October, but they have to release it regardless or else they'd be in violation of some law that has an acronym I can't remember.

OTA ICS will (should) help remove many of the small bugs we have with Camera etc... And once we get a hand on our kernel source, I believe devs will be knee deep in Jellybean goodness... The main reason why I am looking forward for the OTA is for the kernel source... Hell no I am going to go stock.. Once the kernel is up, I am gonna go with Nits' Sense 4 ROM!
The To be determined thing is crappy of them... They say on their FB page that the "Release Date" is the thing to be determined, NOT whether it gets ICS or not... which makes sense given it is in the table of release dates and given they previously confirmed to give it ICS... anyway, time will tell... No breaking my head on this...

Yeah, I should try that ROM too, sometime... I was wondering how functional it is... The Sense 4 ROM has some issues with GPS too (if you toggle it, it will not come back on). But I don't like how Sense 3.6 is.
Even if we don't get an OTA HTC still has to release source because of the Chinese and Inc S ICS OTA. That's why I don't understand why some of the other users are so anxious for an official OTA, even with these other OTAs flash timing appears to still have not been fixed, whatever that is I haven't had it happen personally (knock on wood). We all need to relax and just wait for source to be posted and let the devs do their thing.
On a different topic, anyone else thing the default sig on the XDA app is kind of redundant?

In my experience it was bugless (IC 3.6) although it was laggy. It was laggy in the wrong places (homescreen, and scrolling through certain apps) and smooth in the wrong places (app drawer, GP, settings).

Hear me folks: AOKP is going to Jellybean after Milestone 6. Support is stopped for Dinc1, Desire, Evo 4G and Kindle Fire. [Read here or here] However, DON'T expect it to come overnight for several reasons:
After Milestone 6, the team take a short break in preparation for Jelly Bean. We’ll be taking a different approach to JB; starting fresh. With a clean start, we’ll be able to set things up properly from the get-go. We’re a much more experienced unit now, and we believe merging all of the JB changes is just asking for trouble.
Click to collapse
So, they gonna take a break AND start from scratch. So, unlike what some are saying, they won't simply merge the changes to ICS... It will probably make for a more stable ROM but will undoubtedly take a longer time. However, now that these chaps are experienced with a lot of the subtleties of the whole deving process, I suppose we can be optimistic that it will take lesser time than bringing ICS up to scratch...
On the other hand, the CyanogenMOD team said they will start work on CM10 (Jellybean) as soon as they get the source. However, we don't have official CM9 and so we probably won't have official CM10.. But we may get it from our devs...

Hear me folks: AOKP is going to Jellybean after Milestone 6. Support is stopped for Dinc1, Desire, Evo 4G and Kindle Fire. [Read here or here] However, DON'T expect it to come overnight for several reasons:
So, they gonna take a break AND start from scratch. So, unlike what some are saying, they won't simply merge the changes to ICS... Well I is the 9th letter of the alphabet and J is the 10th and so on, so I guess that's why the CM team is calling it CM10 and not CMX. I mean it makes sense to for them to be consistent, I'm just wondering what will happen when Android goes past Z...

This is what I was referring to talking about J's and 9's and such
But then Apple will sue CyanogenMOD!!! Oh noes, people will be confused between Mac OS X and CM X! They have the same number of letters (3)... Litigious Apple in action!
Apart from this naming convention dilemma, is there anything else that may pique your interest? waiting for the good stuff from Jellybean!

No, only generic, non-copyrighted names allowed. (You lose a point). Rumor mills are cranking up the possibility of Key Lime Pie being the next Android version... Android KLP is what we need to get used to by Jan 2013... Now, lets forget ICS (which is technically outdated already) and focus on JB (similar to GB...)
Do you think Sprint is going to release JB for us? Even tho our phone is offically a year old, its still very powerful and popular

I believe that they have said that they will in the past. howwever, there are at lease 3 different JB builds in the development stages. i am currently using the CM10. it is working well. there is also an AOSP and an AOKP builds also. So you have your choice If you want to root and go custom.

AOSP based builds, combined with ICS proprietary components ought to work pretty well... it's not like the GB to ICS jump, although some would disagree on that as wel..
Since the International versions are getting it, but it would be very lame if we didn't, but so I'm pretty sure we will. I the question is when, when. I got this phone the day it came out and will be able to upgrade in January for a small fee.

Given the current lawsuit from apple in the US they may not release one until all the processes are finalized

Wow, this hasn't been discussed in like 80 threads this week. Thanks for adding another one.
