FIXED: Can't send MMS? Sprint / Boost / Virgin Mobile APN Settings Problem! - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I think there's something wrong w/ my APN settings. I can send/receive SMS, voice, and data. I can only receive MMS. The only way I've been able to send MMS out is by installing Go SMS Pro and manually putting in APN in the app.
My stock messaging or Handcent can't send out MMS, so I'm thinking perhaps my APN got messed up. How can I verify/correct this?
See fix below!

5/31/2014 Update - The Palm Treo Pro 850 and HTC Touch Pro's MMS are now working again as well.
5/20/2014 Update - As of 5/19/2014, Sprint has removed the HTC Touch Pro2 from the list of decommissioned picture mail phones. MMS is now working again on the HTC Touch Pro2.
5/1/2015 Update - As of 4/30/2014, if you have a flashed phone, Sprint has decommissioned a bunch of older phones as far as MMS functionality is concerned. For more info, look here: https://community.sprint.com/baw/co.../2014/01/31/picture-mail-decommissioning-faqs and https://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/152977?start=0&tstart=0. This affects lots of donor phones including, but not limited to HTC Diamond, HTC Touch Pro, HTC Touch Pro2, Palm Treo 850 Pro, etc. The only way to get your MMS back on your flashed phone is to replace your donor. For Sprint legacy plans such as SERO, the Sprint Sanyo Incognito still works. For Boost, the Boost Sanyo Incognito works as well. Boost phones can't be activated with Sprint, but select Sprint phones can be activated with Boost. None of the mentioned methods below will fix your MMS if your donor phone's MMS has been decommissioned by Sprint.
Background: I bought 2 Galaxy S3's. One had the problem out of the box, and the other was just fine. A friend had a problem as well. It seems some Galaxy S3's may have shipped with a defective APN config setting. Method 1 and Method 3 are the "real" fixes, but they require a rooted phone. Method 2 is more of a work around and doesn't require a rooted phone. You must use 8sms app instead of the stock messaging app for SMS/MMS messages.

Method 1 - (the real fix, but requires a rooted phone):
***UPDATE***
I've confirmed that this method works on ICS (4.0.4), Jellybean (4.1.1, 4.1.2, 4.2.2, 4.3) , and KitKat ( 4.4.2) . Tested and working on Galaxy S3, S4, Note 2, and Note 3.
1a) Download this working Sprint APN xml file: https://www.box.com/s/40x5ac2c6u0ckzfz59ig (click on download button at the top)
OR
1b) For Boost, download this xml file: https://www.box.com/s/o9folfrq00ee9p2qj5pv (click on download button at the top)
OR
1c) For Virgin Mobile, download this xml file: https://www.box.com/s/9itl21drpp84enqeszc9 (click on download button at the top)
2) Download and install "APN Backup & Restore" from the Google Play Store to your phone: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.riteshsahu.APNBackupRestore&hl=en
3) Convert the "APN Backup & Restore" into a system app by either using Titanium Backup, or simply use Root Explorer/ES File Explorer (root enable it) to move the APK from /data/app to /system/app. For KitKat, move it to /system/priv-app.
4) Reboot the phone.
5) Launch the app, click on menu, then click on "Disable ICS Check".
6) In the main app menu, click on "Backup APNs". This will create a directory called "ApnBackupRestore" in your /mnt/sdcard.
7) Copy the xml file from step 1 to the /mnt/sdcard/ApnBackupRestore folder.
8) Go back to the main app menu, click on "Delete APNs" and confirm it.
9) Go back to the main app menu, click on "Restore APNs".
10) Choose the file you downloaded from step 1 and confirm it.
11) Reboot your phone.
12) Done.
NEW Method 2 (work around, doesn't require rooted phone) - Uses 8sms app which is lightweight unlike other 3rd party bloated messaging apps such as Go SMS Pro, Handcent, etc. More details about the extra features of this app can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2398767
1) Download and install 8sms app to your phone from the Google Play Store here or from the developer's site here.
2) Launch 8sms app.
3) Press Menu button on your phone.
4) Choose Settings
5) Choose MMSC Settings
6) Press "MMSC".
7a) Type in "http://mms.sprintpcs.com" - do not include the double quotes. Press OK button.
OR
7b) Type in "http://mm.myboostmobile.com" for Boost
OR
7c) Type in "http://mmsc.vmobl.com:8088/mms?" for Virgin Mobile
8) Press "MMS PROXY".
9) Type in "68.28.31.7" (Sprint & Boost) OR "205.239.233.136" (Virgin Mobile) - do not include the double quotes. Press OK button.
10) Press "MMS PORT".
11) Type in "80" (Sprint & Boost) OR "81" (Virgin Mobile) - do not include the double quotes. Press OK button.
12) (optional) Press "MMS over WiFi". I know this works for Sprint. Not sure if it works for Boost or Virgin Mobile.
13) Press phone's back button.
14) Choose "Phone Number" under the Extra Settings section and enter your 10 digit phone number.
15) Press OK button.
16) Press phone's back button.
17) Send/receive a few SMS/MMS messages to test.
18) (optional) You can also configure the app's extra settings such as enabling EMOJI, etc.
19) Done.
Hidden below is the OLD Method 2 - Uses Go SMS Pro which is too bloated and doesn't work well with apps such as Avast Mobile Security
OLD Method 2 - Uses Go SMS Pro which is too bloated and doesn't work well with apps such as Avast Mobile Security - (work around, doesn't require rooted phone)
1) Download and install Go SMS Pro to your phone from the Google Play Store.
2) Launch Go SMS Pro and skip through the intro message screens.
3) Skip the Go Chat Service offer unless you really want that.
4) Press Menu button on your GS3.
5) Choose Settings.
6) Scroll down the menu and choose Set default SMS program.
7) Press each entry in the list and put a check mark on "Use by default for this action" then choose Go SMS Pro. When both are done, press the back button on your phone.
8) Up on top, press "Advanced"
9) Scroll down the list and press "MMS Settings"
10) Scroll down the list and put a check mark on "Fill APN configuration manually"
11) Press "MMSC".
12a) Type in "http://mms.sprintpcs.com" - do not include the double quotes. Press OK button.
OR
12b) Type in "http://mm.myboostmobile.com" for Boost
OR
12c) Type in "http://mmsc.vmobl.com:8088/mms?" for Virgin Mobile
13) Press "MMS PROXY".
14) Type in "68.28.31.7" (Sprint & Boost) OR "205.239.233.136" (Virgin Mobile) - do not include the double quotes. Press OK button.
15) Press "MMS PORT".
16) Type in "80" (Sprint & Boost) OR "81" (Virgin Mobile) - do not include the double quotes. Press OK button.
17) Press back button on phone twice.
18) Send/receive a few SMS/MMS messages to test.
19) Done.
Method 3 - (also a "real fix", but requires a rooted phone and custom recovery such as TWRP, ClockWorkMod, etc.) PLEASE LEAVE FEEDBACK IF THIS METHOD WORKED FOR YOU!
Disclaimer: I'm not responsible if this breaks your phone. Proceed at your own risk! These scripts will replace your old apns-conf.xml file in /system/etc and will delete your telephony.db. When your phone reboots, the telephony.db will get recreated according to the content of your apns-conf.xml file. Thanks to oakieville for the script!
1) Boot into your custom recovery.
2) (optional, but highly recommended) Perform a nandroid backup using your custom recovery before you apply this fix just in case!
3) Not sure if this is necessary, but go ahead and wipe cache and dalvik cache.
4) Flash ONE of these:
Sprint (original, stock, working MMS for Sprint): https://app.box.com/s/m2pq7sesi6aexwa9zu3g
Boost: https://app.box.com/s/dt16cd44hsix3n2dl0mf
Virgin Mobile: https://app.box.com/s/395osivovclbbr44p5w1
5) Reboot your phone.
6) Done.
7) Please leave feedback if this method worked for you!!!

Thanks Alpineman! You are the man and a great help to the android community. Without you, I wouldn't have been able to get my Galaxy S3 to work on my Legacy SERO plan and now you have helped me get my MMS working again. Thanks!

Think this should be posted on both original / or Android Dev side
Good stuff bro. Thanks for this quick and easy tutorial!! :good:

I am unable to receive MMS from anyone that doesn't own a sprint phone. I am however able to send M M S. Do you think this will help with that.

Thank you very much, now my phone to work properly.

cant do it says does not support 4.1

I have not tried this on Android 4.1...Only on ICS. You can downgrade to ICS first, apply the fix, then upgrade to 4.1. The fix should carry over.

Tried this method on AOKP 4.1 and lost the ability to receive any SMS or MMS. I then Odined back to stock Touch Wiz 4.04, rooted and tried again. I still can't receive any SMS/MMS at all since trying it, but I can send SMS just fine... Probably gonna Odin back to stock and take my phone to the store tomorrow as I have no idea what to try next and no SMS is no cool

Did you try reflashing the aokp rom? I tried this fix earlier and it didn't work for me either and I also could not send or receive afterwards. I then wiped and just flashed aokp again like a new install and all was well after that. I would try that before deciding to take your phone back to the store.

I didn't try reflashing AOKP because I still couldn't receive any texts at all, SMS or MMS. I'm in the process of Odining back to stock, maybe I'll re-root, try the fix, and reflash AOKP before the night is over.
Does Odin not return the APNs back to stock? My phone worked fine (minus MMS a known issue w/ AOKP) until I tried this fix.

You didn't need your apn settings to work in order to reflash aokp. What wiping (cache, dalvik, system and factory reset) then reflashing would have done would have restored aokp to your phone as a fresh install and reset your apn settings.

Ok, rooted once more, wiped cache/dalvik, did a factory data reset, then flashed AOKP 9-11, sent a regular old SMS to my gf who is sitting right next to me. She got the text within 2-3 seconds and replied back. It's now been just over 5 minutes and I haven't received her reply SMS.
I've been rooting my phones for 3+ years now, always carefully following instructions from XDA and I've never had an issue that I couldn't fix myself. I just have no idea what else to try =/

Rooted htc desire cdma broken MMS

I've seen a lot of posts regarding mms being broken after rooting. Has anyone gotten it to work? I am with Cellcom Green Bay, WI.
Sent from my HTC Desire CDMA using XDA App
I'm actually with Cellcom in Green Bay as well! I'm running Cyanogenmod 7.1. If you have any questions about what works and what doesn't, feel free to ask me! I've actually tried quite a few ROMs on the Desire.
And just to be clear, rooting worked fine. I'm able to text and take calls. However, with the ROM I'm running, I had to download a different text messaging app, because the default app doesn't split messages longer than 160 characters, so the messages wouldn't send when they were really long. Easy fix though. No worries.
Ligor,
Great to hear that you have things working on your desire. Rooting worked fine and I can make/receive calls fine. Data and internet work fine along with sending and receiving regular text messages. MMS picture messages don't work. I get failure messages back when sending or receiving MMS.
Can you send and receive MMS?
Thanks,
Mike
Sent from my PB99400 using XDA App
I'm testing it now. It appeared to send correctly. I'll let you know if the person I sent it to responds.
EDIT: MMS is not working for me right now. I'm looking into some fixes for it. It appears you would need to install a new mms.apk for the appropriate version of the ROM you're running and change some APN settings.
Ok. I am still on the Cellcom stock ROM. I can see the APN settings and they still appear to be Cellcom. Don't know what may have changed though. I'll keep looking and post if I figure something out. Please let me know if you figure it out.
Thanks!

im also on a cdma desire, but with us cellular. i have similar issues with mms, sometimes they will send, most of the time not. running cm7.1 too. i was using some other sense rom from 2fastroms that i had to mess with the apn settings to get it to actually send any kind of message, but never could get mms to work.
Seems to be a combination of the UTSI_* setting and APN settings. This post leads down that path. I haven't had a chance to try changing anything.
forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/14506-apn-mms-issue/page__st__20
My phone has UTSI_005 set and it looks like it should be UTSI_006
Also found that the CID might be set wrong after rooting.
You went over my head with that post lol. As far as just getting root, I had no problem with the stock rooted rom.
Sent from my HTC Desire CDMA using XDA App
UPDATE
I got MMS working today by following the instructions on this site -
2fastroms.com/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=202
There is a file specific to Cellcom that has the CID updated already
==> Cellcom_mms-fix.zip
The instructions below worked for me. Thanks to 2fastroms.com for this!
I did get a "general network error" when sending a picture, but the message did go through. Also received a cannot download image when receiving a picture message, but it did download.
Step 1:
You need copy the downloaded zip to your sd card. Boot into recovery by using reboot to recovery if a option in your rom. If not power down the device. Hold volume down and power till the h-boot screen shows. Once it does use volume down/up to navigate to recovery. Hit power to select.
Step 2:
Go to install zip from sd-card > carrier_mms-fix.zip. Select yes and let it flash. Then select reboot system.
Step 3:
When rebooted plug your phone into your pc. Open cmd or terminal running the below commands.
Code: Select alladb shell
Enter
Code: Select allsu
Enter hitting ok on the prompt.
Code: Select allcat /dev/mtd/mtd0 > /sdcard/misc.img
Enter
Code: Select all/data/local/flash_image misc /sdcard/new-misc.img
Enter. Once done reboot and see if mms now works. If on sense it should if on aosp you need a modded mms.apk from this
did you try using root explorer mount as r/w then go to data then data again then scroll down to com.android telaphony and long press it hit rename and put a 1 at the end save reboot then it should work thats what i found some where and it worked for me on many roms..

Copy and Paste broken?

I can't seem to copy and paste texts anymore on my S3. Here's what happens:
Long press on text I want to copy
Text automatically highlighted and I get the buttons up top
I pressed the copy button and the top menu closed
In another text field, I do a long press
Intead of the Paste popup button, I get a Clipboard popup button that doesn't do anything when I press it
Any idea how I can fix this?
Thanks in advance

Interesting. I just realized it doesn't say text copied anymore. I just found out that if I try to copy the content of an SMS message or a Whatsapp message, the program will crash.

Been broken for me too. Haven't been able to find a fix. On stock and not rooted.

Same here, crashes any app in which I try to copy/paste from. Actually crashes during the copy portion in any app.
Running stock, ICS, on Verizon, how is this not a bigger deal? I plan on posting a video of the issue later.

What app are you trying to do this from? Each may have their own options, but the stock email is one I'll use as an example.
- Long press text (as you mentioned)
- Select text, ensure you choose the clipboard icon, at this point I do get the message "copied to clipboard"
- Choose another app, or choose to create a new email, etc..... long press and you should get the "paste" and "clipboard" option.... that's what I get anyways.
I also tested on the stock browser and works fine. Did you install any MOD's, etc?
I've noticed the same thing on my SGS3 (AT&T) started couple of weeks ago maybe... I can only assume it happened due to an app being updated. I'm not able to copy from website to text. If I try and copy from text app (stock) it crashes... Wonder what could have caused this.

My biggest fustration of all time on Android is with copy and paste. Is this an application developer problem? I can't tell you how many times I've tried to copy and paste between apps or even the same app but to avail just fustration. Either the selection handles don't work properly or after the "copy" and an attempt to "paste" NOTHING!
Chrome has been busted for a while. Default browser still works for me.

I'm also having this same problem and it only started recently. I have no idea what caused it and what update may have triggered this. Every time I try to copy anything in any program it crashes. It's so frustrating! Also run un-rooted phone with stock software. Maybe it's time to root?

Flashing a rom will fix the problem... But I'm holding out for stock jelly bean before I root/flash. Anyone have more info on this issue?!
Samsung s3
Fix for ROOTED users...
"1. boot recovery (CWM) > advanced > wipe cache
2. reboot phone > Root Explorer > delete /data/clipbord/*
3. reboot recovery again > advanved > fix permissions
4. reboot phone > it's fine"
Found this on Phandroid. But haven't found a fix for non-root. There is also another thread on here somewhere about this issue(merge possibly?)
Here is also a link to the discussion on Phandroid.

OMG thank you soo much. I had this problem before and the only solution I found at this time was to backup everything with Titanium, than do a factory reset, and finaly restore everything. It worked but it was a real pain in the a**.
I'm so glad there is a 60 sec solution.
By the way I did it in a different order to be faster and it worked :
1. Delete everything in folder /data/clipboard/
2. Reboot recovery, wipe cash
3. Stay in recovery --> advance -->fix permission
4. Reboot and enjoy copy/paste again
Again thank you.
So the problem seems to be the clipboard gets full? Lol hope this gets fixed.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
Ditto on having this issue. Glad there's a solution if rooted. Wish they would send an update to fix it for those not rooted. Factory reset is ridiculous. I'm not going to do that every 2 months, which is now long I've had the gs3 (obviously this will happen again if the root cause isn't fixed)
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 [AT&T GS3 Stock Rom] using xda-developers app
This is temporary - it will have to be done again when the cache fills up again.
Similarly there is a temporary solution for non-rooted phones - factory restore is supposed to provide the same solution, just a bit more time consuming with having to restore everything.
that's crazy .. does samsung expect us to do a hard reset every few months ?

You have to root your phone first then the wifi tether app will work
You might just have to wait for Foxfi to release a jellybean version.
Sent from my HTC Sensation using Tapatalk 2
I am using Rooted stock rom and i installed wifitether from Play Store, when i enable tethering it show that it is turned on but i don't see the SSID on my laptop or my other android device. i checked the setting to see if the ssid was hidden but there is no option for hidden SSID.
I also tried to put it in manually on my laptop still couldn't find the it. changed device profile to samsung galaxy s3 and generic jellybeans but still doesn't work.

This widget can start tmobiles tethering service even if you remove tethering provision and TMtethering apps off your phone.
T-mobile also has a special apn set up for tethering to. More info here

It's because the S3 is running ICS, FoxFi won't work on JB.
Steps to take:
01. Have a T-Mobile T889 Samsung Galaxy Note 2
02. Download these files: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1446771&d=1351716949
03. Extract files to folder on Desktop
04. Root your T-Mobile T889 Samsung Galaxy Note 2
05. Once rooted, make a COMPLETE backup using CWM or Titanium Backup (I did BOTH just in case, I like to be double sure I have a backup)
06. Once backed up, go to Google Play Market and download "APN Backup & Restore"
07. Once installed, open APN Backup & Restore and press on "OK" on the warning message that comes up
08. Close APN Backup & Restore (from task manager too, just in case)
09. Open Titanium Backup and press on Backup/Restore
10. Find the application "APN Backup & Restore" and long press with your finger on it
11. Once menu comes up, press on "Convert to System App"
12. Once done, close Titanium Backup (from task manager too, just in case)
13. Open APN Backup & Restore and press on "OK" on the warning Message that comes up
14. Press on the menu button on the phone and press on "Disable ICS Check"
15. Close APN Backup & Restore (from task manager too, just in case)
16. Open APN Backup & Restore and press on "Backup APNs"
17. Select a name or leave the one in there
18. Once backed up, close APN Backup & Restore (from task manager too, just in case)
19. Connect your phone to your computer
20. Once connected, navigate to your phone drive in My Computer and go to "Phone > ApnBackupRestore" > Copy the created XML file to your computer (once again, just in case)
21. While still in the "Phone > ApnBackupRestore" folder copy/cut/paste the "T-Mobile-APN.xml" file to that folder
22. Once the file has been copied to the "Phone > ApnBackupRestore" folder, open up APN Backup & Restore application on your phone
23. Once open, press on "Delete APNs" and press "Yes"
24. Once deleted, press on "Restore APNs" and select the T-Mobile-APN.xml (the one we originally copies from the zip folder that needed to be downloaded/extracted to a folder on your Desktop, and press "OK"
25. It will then restore the newly modified APN file
26. Close APN Backup & Restore (from task manager too, just in case)
27. Go to Google Play Market and download "Tethering Widget"
28. Once installed, go to the APPS icon on your phone and select Widgets tab on top and drag the Tethering Widget to a new page
29. You should now be able to successfully enable native tethering via the Widget
30. MISSION COMPLETE
*NOTE: DO NOT GO INTO THE ACTUAL T-MOBILE HOTSPOT APPLICATION AS IT WILL OVERWRITE THE APNS AND TETHERING WILL NO LONGER WORK. IF THAT HAPPENS, REPEAT STEPS 23-30.
Please let me know if I have missed anything. Alot of these steps are self explanitory but I have had issues with this the past day, but I finally got it to work so I wanted to share every step in an ultra-easy fashion
Thanks!! Will try this once we get power back.
Anyway, what do you mean T-Mobile Hostpot app? Are you referring to the Mobile Hotspot app in the drawer? Or the Mobile Hotspot and Tethering Menu in the settings? If so, aren't those default Jellybean/Android feature and not T-Mobile's?
Also, what about the International versions (N7100) being used in T-Mobile US?

Forgot the Insecure Boot.img part
quote from WarlockW's intructions :
YOU MUST INSTALL APN BACKUP & RESTORE AS A SYSTEM APP !
YOU MUST HAVE ROOT !
YOU MUST HAVE A INSECURE BOOT.IMG WITH ADB SUPPORT !
YOU MUST HAVE TITANIUM BACKUP PRO ! OR ANDROID COMMANDER !
YOU MUST HAVE MY EDITED T-MOBILE-APN.XML !!
I've done the APN mod on my vibrant but I still get the tmobile upsell page unless I change the user-agent . Isn't the point of this to avoid the tmobile upsell page with out switching the user agent . I wonder why its not working for me .

I did not do any insecure boot.img because if you follow his instructions on that part it will bring you to the kernel or boot for the T999 which is the S3 not the N2, so I just skipped that step and it still worked fine for me from start to finish.

You are right . This only works for custom Roms then right . Stock kernel won't have an insecure boot.img .
Anyone know how to configure wifi tether? I dont want to use the widget.
Also, I was able to freeze tether provisioning through titanium but it can't find the tmobile mobile hotspot app.

This worked fine for the whole week until yesterday, when all of the sudden I was limited to E (Edge) data. I called t-mobile who then gave me instructions to do a new APN:
Name: T-Mobile US
APN: epc.tmobile.com
Proxy: 216.155.165.050
Port: 8080
Username: (leave this blank)
Password: (leave this blank)
Server: (leave this blank)
MMSC: http://mms.msg.english.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
MMS Proxy: 261.155.165.050
MMS Port: 8080
MMS Protocol: WAP 2.0 (don't know if this is important)
MCC: 310
MNC: 260
APN Type: (leave this blank)
So I did that and the 4G came back on. I tried flashing back to the APN from this thread to enable me to tether again and when I do so I have zero data available. Not even Edge. Any help here?

Hi there every one I have been flashing phones to metro PCS for a while now But this is my first How to. I'm going to show you how to flash your sprint/Verizon Galaxy S3 to metropcs or cricket, with 3g data working.

This is the biggest hurdle, which very few people have successfully gotten to work. It is not a perfect solution but it works very well for us.
Download the following Zip file (not flashable):
Follow these instructions carefully:
1. Download and install Titanium Backup. You will also need the PRO version, so you'll need to shell out a couple of bucks if you don't already own it. It's well worth it anyways.
2. Download and install APN Backup & Restore from the Market.
3. Open APN Backup & Restore, ignore the ICS warning, and click on "Backup APNs". Exit out of APN Backup & Restore.
4. Place this folder in your SD Card.
5. Copy MetroPCS_MMS_Send_APN.xml from this folder to the APN Backup folder in the root of the SD Card.
6. Open Titanium Backup, go under Backup/Restore, and find APN Backup & Restore, press and select "Make system app."
7. Open APN Backup & Restore, ignore the ICS warning, press menu, and disable ICS check. Exit APN Backup & Restore.
8. Open APN Backup & Restore again, and now there should not be an ICS warning!
9. Click on "Delete APNs."
10. Click on Restore APNs and select "MetroPCS_MMS_Send.APN.xml".
10a. Press Ok after selecting the above.
10b. Press No when you get the message asking Yes or No.
11. Using Root Explorer or a similar app, copy the SecMMS.apk file from this folder to your /system/app/ folder.
11a. Make sure you are in R/W mode and click Yes to overwrite existing file if you get the message.
11b. Make sure to delete/overwrite any existing SecMms.apk from the /system/app directory. You should only have one SecMms.apk file.
11c. Make sure to delete any SecMms.odex if you're on the stock or an odexed rom.
12. Set permissions to RW-R--R--
13. Reboot.
14. Open the Messaging app and under Settings make sure to check (enable) "SMS split".

i tried this and dont know why my s3 keep saying Sprint and it dosent receive calls o text...
Can you please please help me if i do something wrong
Working Talk Text and Data
I literally got my talk text and data working 2 min ago. I have a Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3 that I now am using on Metro PCS.
What I did,
Step 1.
Install Samsung Drivers
Install Kies (To update: I was on 4.1.1 now I'm running 4.1.2)
Step 2.
Root Samsung Galaxy S3. I used Casual one click (It's literally one click)
- Google search key phrase 'root verizon samsung galaxy s3 casual one click'
Step 3.
Now you should have SuperSU
Download
1. APN Manager- I have APN Manager Pro
2. Titanium Backup
Step 4.
I used Titanium Backup to uninstall all the Verizon bloatware, and overall junk I don't use. With removing bloatware click on backup/restore then select and hold APN Manager Pro (or whatever) and select convert to system app.
Step 5.
If not updated to 4.1.2, do so. - You'll need to have the ability to add an APN, only possible with 4.1.2.
I bypassed setting the language etc. with the four corners technique. Google Keyword: 'android four corners trick'
Step 6.
I went out and activated a MetroPCS plan, and got a simcard. At this point I could make and receive calls and text, but no data or mms.
Step 7.
From APN Manager Pro I clicked insert new APN. this can also be done from settings -> More settings -> Mobile Networks -> Access Point Names -> More options soft key: Add new access point. (Updating from phone settings in my opinion is simpler)
Step 8.
New APN
Name: "fast.t-mobile.com" (You can put whatever you want)(without quotes)
APN : "fast.t-mobile.com" (without quotes)
MMSC: "htetep:mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc" (without quotes.Sorry i think you understand what i mean, please put in the letters and not htetep)
MCC: 310
MNC: 260
make sure APN is enabled is checked
Everything else has 'Not set', my APN protocol also says IPv4
Step 9.
Close settings completely
Go back to settings --> Access Point Names to make sure it is still there. Select it if not selected already.
Step 10.
Power off
pull out battery and sim card
wait 10 sec
power on
Step 11.
Enjoy data and mms.
Thank you guys for the instructions, I think I'm about to do the same for my Verizon S3.
But before I do, can you guys post what kind of speed you're getting on the new Metro(GSM)/T-Mobile 3G network?
I remember MetroPCS original 3G on CDMA was horrible and I just want to make sure the Verizon S3 won't suffer the same faith.
Thanks again in advance for you input!
Has anyone tried this with either JB? My phone is on the 4.3 update and I was wondering if it will work.

Your post is very promising to me since I'm looking to do the exact same thing and not looking forward to the complicated process detailed in the OP. I have a few clarifying questions I hope you don't mind answering for me:
1) Are you limited to 2G and 3G only, or are you able to have 4G/LTE connections?
2) Sorry to oversimplify your method, but boiled down, it sounds like you accomplished exactly what I want to do more or less by simply rooting, debloating, and changing the APN settings. Is this accurate? (Yes I've read your post all the way through five times+, I get there are certain important details to follow, but is my summary correct?)
3) I get the feeling you won't be able to answer this one, but worth a shot: Do you have any idea if this will work if the Verizon S3 came with KitKat (4.4.2) installed? Exhaustive research tells me it's impossible to downgrade android versions from this version.
Thanks for sharing this, and hopefully any answers you can give me. I'll be updating my post on whether or not it works for me when I try later
You are correct, root + debloat, change APN settings. When I had the phone I was limited to 3g speeds. I was still able to use maps, and surf without pulling my hair out. Although, most everywhere I went had wifi so I just ended up using that. As far as number 3, I am not sure. I no longer have the phone. Does the APN show up in network settings now? Could you just try the settings above? You could check if casual one click supports 4.4.2. If it does, you could give it a shot. I didn't have to use it, but if anything goes wrong use ODIN to restore your phone.
My sprint Samsung s3 has no card slot, and I'm with metro, can I use this method and get my metro plan on my s3??? Please need help!!!

[Q] CM 11 data connection troubleshooting (RESOLVED)

I have been running CM 11 Nightly builds, and everything has been working out pretty good, until just a day or so ago.
Now suddenly I find that I never get a data connection (3G, etc) - works fine on Wi-Fi of course though.
Using the FC09 multiboot, I am able to prove that it is not an issue with my phone hardware or my Sprint account.
FC09 has data connection and everything is cool, until I reboot into latest CM 11 (right now = cm-11-20140305-NIGHTLY).
(Since I don't have enough posts yet to ask this in the development thread, I thought I'd try here and see if I had any luck.)
In trying to research this, I see some talk of "APN settings" - but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to access those settings to change them
(Some advice said to speak "Open APN" into the voice dialer? But that is not doing anything for me...)
I guess I am also curious if this is happening to anyone else using CM 11 Nightly builds?
Again, the data connection works when I "multiboot" FC09, but cannot get it to work on latest CM 11 Nightly.
Any help or suggestions on things to check/tweak are highly appreciated - thank you in advance.
Yap... that append to me also, i'm on a GT-I9000 with the same NIGHTLY version. That must be a rom problem, because with the previous version, worked ok.
Getting closer to a solution (?)
Same problem (currently running cm-11-20140306-NIGHTLY)
I did finally figure out how to acces the "Open APNs" screen.
My mistake was trying to say "Open APN" from the regular phone dialer, which just threw the voice command to Google.
Then it suddenly clicked - they meant the separate application that is named "Voice Dialer".
(thought I would post that in case it saves anybody else some headache)
So then I found this buzzmobile link that lists "Sprint APN Settings for Android (US)"
http://buzzmobile.us/sprint-apn-settings-android-us/
I thought I was just about to get this all taken care of... BUT, now here is the problem:
No matter how many times I have tried to enter and re-enter the APN settings, they are not being saved.
I don't know if anyone has any experience with this issue, but if you have any advice, I am all ears - thank you.

Boot into the temporary FC09 installation and try the "##DATA#" dialer code. If thats not the right code then its gotta be another one that allows you to access these settings. You may also need your MSL.
My journey
OK, so I'm back in business again, and thought I would share...
1) Booted into the "multiboot" FC09 and installed 'APN Backup & Restore' app
2) Made a backup .xml file from there
3) Rebooted back into CM11
4) Installed 'APN Backup & Restore' app - BUT - could not restore the APN .xml file yet - special steps needed to get this to work with KitKat
5) Installed 'ES File Explorer File Manager' app
6) Followed instructions in this article to change 'APN Backup & Restore' to a system app:
How To Install Any App As A System App On Android [Guide]
NOTE FOR KITKAT: where it says to move the app to /system/app, you actually have to move it to /system/priv-app
7) After following that, I opened up 'APN Backup & Restore' app, but I was confused that it still said "Unfortunately APNs cannot be restored or deleted on this device because Android 4.0+ does not allow 3rd party apps to Write APN Settings."
8) Then I realized that I still needed to go into the settings of the app and click 'Disable ICS Check'
9) Then the app was recognized as a system app and I could do a restore from my .xml file
[EDIT: attaching a .zip of the .xml file that I snagged from booting into FC09]
