no you wont have an issue brick my doing a full wipe. Its safe now. For flashing kernels and modems yes just a cache and delvik cache wipe is all that is needed. when you flash a modem tho, go to update profile and update PRL. do both and you will be fine. when you flash a new rom use format all zip. its at the very bottom, repete very bottom of the first post. it wipes everything for you. there are two of them tho. one full wipe, second is a modified wipe. use the full wipe for flashing roms. once you have the format all just keep it on the root of your SD card. so you'll always have it.

You flash a kernel like a rom.
Wipe, Flash the rom, flash the kernel, reboot.
Should be good after that.
Make sure the kernel is for Sense if you are using sense or AOSP if you are using AOSP.
SetCPU will let you configure the kernel.
thanks for the quick response xnotta. i just want to make sure, i wipe everything, meaning dalvik, cache, and data, right??
On energy wipe ONLY dalvik cache mount data in recovery flash kernel unmount data reboot

If you are already running the rom(Energy) then you can just wipe Cache and Dalvik then flash the kernel(anthrax).
You only need to wipe everything if you are installing the rom(Energy) fresh.
Sorry for the confusion.

Go back into recovery and flash your backup or use Odin to flash a stock rom, your just in a bootloop. You mustve flashed a bad download.

Once I installed the rom it booted fine but everything was slow and my phone kept getting errors, so then i went back in cwm and wiped all the data, now when i try to install the rom again it just takes like 5 seconds to install, i reboot the phone but it keeps going into a loop.... at this point i am pretty lost. Did you goninto recovery and wipe cache dalvik and permissions. Or even better just factory reset after installing stock rom. Odin to stock doesnt faxtory reset your phone. Old files could still be lingering in there.

Try redownloading the rom, then in recovery make sure you are A. Wipe Factory Data Reset, B. Wipe Cache, C. Advanced Menu Wipe Dalvik D. Advanced Menu Wipe Battery Stats, E. Mounts/Storage Format Cache, System, Boot, Emmc, Then flash the Rom.
Silly question but are you installing 1.4 before flashing 1.4.1? Cause I think that ROM needs the 1.4 full flashed prior to flashing 1.4.1.

can you give me a link to a stock ROM? the one i am using is SGH-T989-Stock-UVKID
so then I do what you just told me

Then flash the Rom - Go into Odin and Select the file(click pda), then click start - correct?

In fact some roms have issues when you wipe before a flash, take captainmorgan's miui port as an example, some of us had nothing but issues related to wiping everything first lol, its hit or miss on that so most definitely check the op for all your flashing info needs

Hey guys, I just bought my Galaxy S III, I'm coming from the S II.
On the S II, there would be an installation process that I remembered by heart after flashing several times:
Open CWM
Backup
Install Darkside SuperWipe
Flash ROM
Flash gapps
Install Darkside Cachewipe
Reboot
Wait 10 min
Reboot.
While I've been on the S III forums for the past 2 days I haven't seen any of the devs have an installation guide, I figured I might have to wipe dalvik, wipe data or something but haven't tried just yet. Maybe I could just flash ROM over it.
If there's a process can someone please tell me.
Thank you, greatly appreciated.

Yes but the superwipe does the same thing and it was built for lazy people. I always say "what ever floats your boat". :good:
I've installed ROMs before so I'm not a complete noob, but I'm clearly doing something wrong and would like some help.
I've tried installing 3 different JB ROMs (Kobridge tweaked FL04, Jellyverse0.3, JB Black Bean) and everytime I boot up into the Sprint animation and it hangs every single time at the big 4G. I'm coming from BluKuban which I return to every time after flashing EL29 direct boot through pc Odin.
This is what I've been doing:
Installed EL29 direct boot or EL26 stock
cleared cache, davlik and run Format_All_X2
Installed JB modem
installed ROM
run Format All X2 again
A couple of files might be different depending on the ROM instructions, but that's what I've been doing.
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Don't flash format all zip after flashing rom zip.
You are wiping system right after flashing rom so there is no system and thus you don't boot.

Thanks for the suggestion, but format_all_x2.zip just wipes data, cache and dalvik, doesn't it? I use it all the time when reflashing Ruj's BluKuban.

Its not a suggestion. Its your FIX. It wipes system. I hope you are not confusing format all x2 zip with modified_format all zip. The modified zip wipes only the caches.
As such there is NO need to wipe after flashing the ROM..
