quick kernel question - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i apologize for my noob question in advance.
i'm new to the whole flashing ROMs/kernels and what not scene. im interested in flashing the newest energy rom and i have seen a lot of people saying that the anthrax kernel is amazing with the energy rom. i know how to flash a ROM, I'm just not sure what to do about the kernel. so i was just wondering if somebody can give me a quick tutorial on how to flash anthrax's kernel with the energy rom.
again, i apologize for my noob question. any help would be much appreciated. thanks

You flash a kernel like a rom.
Wipe, Flash the rom, flash the kernel, reboot.
Should be good after that.
Make sure the kernel is for Sense if you are using sense or AOSP if you are using AOSP.
SetCPU will let you configure the kernel.

thanks for the quick response xnotta. i just want to make sure, i wipe everything, meaning dalvik, cache, and data, right??

On energy wipe ONLY dalvik cache mount data in recovery flash kernel unmount data reboot

If you are already running the rom(Energy) then you can just wipe Cache and Dalvik then flash the kernel(anthrax).
You only need to wipe everything if you are installing the rom(Energy) fresh.
Sorry for the confusion.

If you don't do it exactly how I stated your WiFi will break and you'll lose alot of apps ect

so let me get this straight because i am doing a clean install of the energy rom, i should wipe everything, flash rom, flash kernel, then reboot? i also read something about mounting/unmounting to prevent breaking wifi, do i need to worry about that?

How do we remove Kernels?

Im assuming just do a full data/system wipe and just restore but i wanted to make sure first.
Kernels and me arent getting along and I just want to go back to my standard unmodified Fresh rom.
Thanks ahead for your help
You will need to flash the kernel you want. You shouldn't need to wipe nor will wiping change your kernel.

Yeah, wiping alone wont help. Actually wiping wont help regardless.
You can either flash a different kernel over the one you have now or you can just reflash whatever ROM you are using without wiping.
appreciate your help ladies/gents.
im loving the dead flash sig btw

Need some help plz

I know this is a dumb question but I downloaded a different kernel and I need to know how to flash that kernel and keep the rom that I have on my evo

You're going to want to wipe dalvik and cache (as you always should when Flashing something). Possibly even battery stats if you want to play it safe
Treat kernels just like you do roms I don't want you to be paranoid

Don't wipe data
Do wipe cache
I never wipe battery stats, but I suppose you could.

Exactly...
Just make sure to ONLY wipe cache and dalvik cache. This will ensure that the kernel is flashed correctly with no traces of the previous kernel. Again, like said previously, treat flashing kernels as you do flashing ROMs. It's easy, and if anything goes wrong (rarely ever happens, unless you use a kernel not designed for the EVO, LoL) then it can always be undone by reflashing
Good luck and enjoy! You'll be fine br0
For completeness....(? it's Christmas)
Due to some possible wipe (recovery) issues:
Wipe cache , twice.
Wipe Dalvick , twice.
IIRC
Thanks all for your help. I looked at a couple of different kernels, which one do yall think is the best mainly for the battery anyway?

I'm running SBC-net 4.2.2. And it runs great for me. Good battery and is smooth.
Do you have a link that I can download that kernel?

I always wipe with a ruj format all before I flash a new rom.. But as far as flashing modems and kernels I never wiped cache and had an issue.. But it won't hurt to wipe it before you flash a new kernel or modem

In fact some roms have issues when you wipe before a flash, take captainmorgan's miui port as an example, some of us had nothing but issues related to wiping everything first lol, its hit or miss on that so most definitely check the op for all your flashing info needs

Correct. Always flash cashe and dalvik before flashing a kernel. Modem no. Just update prl and profile and you're good.

Flashing Kernel... advice

So I'm going to flash the Trinity kernel to my Wind Mobile S3 and i'm wondering... what all do i have to do before and after? from what i understand before i just have to wipe cache and dalvik cache, then install zip... what about after it is installed and rebooted?
do i have to do anything else? if so, what, and how (if it's not self-explainitory)
and if this is in the wrong place, i'm sorry mods, i'm pretty new here, and i just thought this would be a good place to post because a lot of people in here seem to do kernel stuff...
thanks
yes it's a wrong place to post here in development section.. but for your question yes, for better result you need to wipe partition and cache then flash the kernel of your choice.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Its in the wrong place LOL! To answer your question...
1. Make sure the kernel you are downloading is for the correct rom (CM9/Stock)
2. Make a nandroid in recovery before flashing, its better to be safe than sorry.
3. Wipe cache
4. Wipe davlik cache
5. Flash kernel
6. Reboot wait till you get to the lckscreen. Be patient it has to optimize system
7. If you want to OC download setcpu in the market, its free here for members you just have to search.
8. Test and run the whole day...there's alot of kernel's you decide which combo rom/kernel you like!
9. Enjoy/Profit :highfive:

So did it work? i want to flash a rom that has the trinity kernel and im worried... I'm with videotron which is essentially the same phone...
CM10 official
I see from your signature you are running CM10 Official..Where will I find that.
Great tips, how safe is it to OC with setcpu and at what speed?

[Q] Doing something wrong trying to flash JB

I've installed ROMs before so I'm not a complete noob, but I'm clearly doing something wrong and would like some help.
I've tried installing 3 different JB ROMs (Kobridge tweaked FL04, Jellyverse0.3, JB Black Bean) and everytime I boot up into the Sprint animation and it hangs every single time at the big 4G. I'm coming from BluKuban which I return to every time after flashing EL29 direct boot through pc Odin.
This is what I've been doing:
Installed EL29 direct boot or EL26 stock
cleared cache, davlik and run Format_All_X2
Installed JB modem
installed ROM
run Format All X2 again
A couple of files might be different depending on the ROM instructions, but that's what I've been doing.
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Don't flash format all zip after flashing rom zip.
You are wiping system right after flashing rom so there is no system and thus you don't boot.

Thanks for the suggestion, but format_all_x2.zip just wipes data, cache and dalvik, doesn't it? I use it all the time when reflashing Ruj's BluKuban.

It wipes system, not dalvik.

Its not a suggestion. Its your FIX. It wipes system. I hope you are not confusing format all x2 zip with modified_format all zip. The modified zip wipes only the caches.
As such there is NO need to wipe after flashing the ROM..
Are you following the directions on the OP of each ROM?
If not... do it, that is how you fix your problem.

Yes I am, unless I'm misunderstanding something. That list is what seemed to be in common to all three.
I'll try to do it again tomorrow when I have a few hours.
