MHL - Enables Landscape Mode - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I recently bought the below MHL adapter:
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-EPL-F...&qid=1343145171&sr=8-3&keywords=galaxy+s3+mhl
It works well - it allows you to use your old MHL adapters (of which I have 3) with the new 11 pin format in our SGS3. I was pleasantly surprised to play and output 1080P files off my memory card, and even 1080P SBS 3D videos output well to my Toshiba passive 3D TV. I haven't checked yet to see what actual resolution the TV is seeing - so I don't know if it's true 1080P, but the picture was sharp in combination with my cheapie $6 MHL adapter.
Unlike my old Evo 3D - MHL mode allowed the main OS to run in landscape. That was a big surprise. Even after disconnecting, I could keep landscape mode until turning it to portrait - then I'd only regain it if I reconnected my cables. BTW - connecting to power AND HDMI was required for this to work. I have to say the landscape operation was really smooth and didn't noticeably distort scale or aspect ratio - I'd just like to be able to use it more often, like on my desk using a kickstand.
I'm guessing Samsung locked out Landscape for general use - but just in case, is there a setting that can enable landscape mode outside of MHL?

Hmm, is there some other type of landscape mode or are you talking about the one where you just turn your phone?
I'm 99% sure I'm either reading this wrong or there's another type of landscape mode I don't know about yet.

Webtop Access Kit / HD Dock video issues

I am having a very hard time deciding to keep this phone. There are things it does so well and others are a clear miss.
The HD dock kit (with the keyboard/mouse) brings up a massive limitation on this phone when connected to a HDMI monitor. Out of 4 HDMI monitors and TVs I own, there is not one that is an exact native resolution mode that is supported by this phone. The 720p modes come close to my 720p monitors but there is no support at all for 1080 modes.
This makes the video out look like crap on these monitors, like using S-video in or something. Most of the video modes seem to be from the old VGA output connector days like 800x600 1024x768 1280x1024 etc. Why?
The output quality is no where even close to what you are used to on your PC because of this. If you were lucky enough to have a monitor with a supported native resolution then mabey it would look correct. As it is, the text is painfully blurry to look at in todays crisp digital era.
Now that the desktop mode is unusable because of crappy video out mode support, major functions of this Atrix are gone.
Anyone else notice this?
I thought I should post this to give others a heads up on these accessories.

Questions regarding official S3 MHL/HDMI output!

1) How do i fix the borders cut off in landscape mode when connected to TV?? If u look at youtube videos every user regardless of TVs have the screen bit cut off even thou phone's resolution is 16:9 720p?
2) Why does it display in 1080p not 720p (screen on galaxy s3 is 720p)? (my laptop using same hdmi cable without adaptor shows as 720p on TV) id like to be able to adjust it
3) My galaxy s3 heats up to 55 Celsius when playing with the phone and mirroring games. Is this normal? (although my alienware laptop heats up same also when connected to TV)
4) There is a abit of a lag between TV and a phone, the phone also seems to lag more when connected to TV (my laptop doesnt experience this)

Hey,
1) I have a Samsung TV and on my remote there's a button labeled 'P.SIZE', i'm guessing that stands for picture size. I keep pressing that button until 'Just Scan' appears on my TV, this adjusts the borders accordingly, basically, doesn't cut them off. I tried the exact same thing on a Philips TV and it didn't have 'Just Scan', the best i could do there is have the borders cut off but only by a little bit.
2) I'm not sure about this one but it's my understanding that, if your TV supports 1080p then the phone upscales to that resolution and if your TV only supports 720p then it displays at 720p. I think most of us would like to be able to adjust it
3) I think this is normal seeing as your phone is displaying it's screen...twice and in 1080p...while playing CPU/GPU intensive games + while on charger. (Yea, i'm not sure it's fair to compare a laptop with the S3 in that context)
4) I read some info on what could possibly be causing the lag...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1799157...They discuss how, when the S3 is connected to a 1080p TV, the S3 then displays the picture in 1080p at 24hz which apparently is good enough for videos but not for games. Whereas if you connect the S3 to a 720p TV it displays the picture in 720p at 60hz which apparently makes it less laggy. (Once again i don't think comparing an Alienware laptop with the S3 is just)

MHL HDMI, 1080p TVs & Lag: Problems as a portable movie player/console

Here's some info regarding what I've tried and what the results have been w/ my HTC ONE. Hopefully, it can help you based on what you're trying to accomplish. Maybe with some feedback, I can see if there's any work around. Obviously, this probably wasn't entirely part of the design team's intentions for this phone, but it's fun to try.
Using a 5-PIN MHL to USB Adapter:
INTERFACE: When I plug this in to my phone, I immediately notice scrolling through the app drawer is laggy. Do you? My adapter is from Ebay, and is about a year old. It looks like any other $10 adapter I see out there, but I wasn't sure if the newer ones are better.
INPUT LAG: almost non-existent. Pressing controls take action immediately.
MIRROR: TV is a true mirror of the phone.
MOVIES: playback stutters due to the MHL1.0 24fps @ 1080 restriction
GAMES: are playable due to low input lag, but again the 24fps bites you for any game (this is MANY) that does not support changing its resolution.
Using HTC Media Link HD: Ran the update to latest (as of Jun 19th 2013)
INTERFACE: Noticed right away that my phone remained butter-smooth while also transmitting signal to the TV.
INPUT LAG: felt like about 300ms.
MIRROR: TV is not a true mirror of the phone. I immediately noticed my phone was taken over, put in landscape mode and my app drawer was different.
MOVIES: Playback seemed smoother overall, with occasional hitching (not frequent enough to deter from use).
GAMES: Games are unplayable due to input lag. Noticed a softening effect and when not lagging, probably was a touch smoother in FPS.
Other Considerations:
Hook up to a non-1080p TV: Nope. Most modern 720p TVs support 1080i, and thus tell the phone to send it 1080 signal.
Hook up a REALLY non-1080p TV: Ok, ok... so get a 8+ year old TV, or an older LCD Monitor. Yes. Whatever resolution it supports at max will make the HTC One step down from 1080 signal and tada... movies, games and interface all become butter smooth over MHL to USB.
Change the output resolution in the app: This will work if the game supports it, but many don't. Movies? Does anyone know of a good movie app that lets you change the output res?
Root your phone, it's time for ElementalX's 720p MHL HDMI output tweak since this phone doesn't support MHL 2.0: Sure, but I'm trying to find a non-rooting method first. It looks decent. Ultimately, if I have to, I will, but I'm trying not to tinker this go-round. The phone is totally acceptable to me otherwise. On Sprint, he's just begun support for us and I'm keeping an eye on the thread to see better results from the pioneers first.

New finding: If your MHL adapter causes your TV to blink in and out from time to time, I figured out what it is: Turn off Mobile Data on your phone.
For me, when I'm on 3G at least, whenever it gets a data hit, the HDMI functionality cuts out causing a static, noisy output to the TV.
Fortunately Wi-Fi is OK. Untested yet with 4G.
About to purchase a Bluetooth controller , a generic mhl adapter from amazon that has been confirmed to work with the one , and a flash of the ElementalX kernel . Really hope I'll be able to play my N64oid and PSXe titles smoothly . Will definitely report back with results

With that great option to set to 720p you should be butter-smooth. Good luck and let us know!
Hey.
I am running the latest nightly of CM 10.1 on my HTC one.
I can not seem to get my mhl cable working. Once I plug it in my HTC one often shuts down. The cable isn't faulty. It works like a charm with my galaxy nexus.
Sometimes I see a mirror of my screen but it is with a really bad resolution. Sometimes it flickers and shows a picture on and off. Mostly it freezes and then shuts down. It's really annoying.
USB OTG also doesn't work. The frequency of getting a bad resolution for a little while before it shuts down worked better after I disabled USB debugging in my developer settings.
Any thoughts? Workarounds?
Thanks in advance.
HTC one. CM 10.1
Turn off any form of motion control, as that'll cause quite a few issues as well.
Correct. Thanks a lot. I turned off auto rotate and then it worked. Didn't think of that. Now the mhl HDMI setup runs flawless without lag.
HTC one. CM 10.1
It's just me or image quality it's not that good? It's not the same as computer connected with HDMI? It seems it lower bitrate or diminish image quality. I am not talking about 24 fps limitation...
Does MHL adaptor quality might have an influence, or it's all the same?

[Q] Smart Dock MHL HDMI output Resolution

Hi,
I have a Note 8 on 4.1.2 with Samsung Smart Dock, There are a few questions i would like to ask if anyone has experience of this combination.
1: Screen output to TV, its seems its outputting 1280x800 therefore i get a little chopped off at the top and black bars down the sides in landscape, Nearly full screen but not quite. Videos will play full screen though, just games and android desktop/apps seem to have this chopping off effect. Is this normal ?
TV's i have tried are all 1080p and 720p and a 2560x1600 Dell monitor.
2: Anyway to make 4.2.2 work with Dock ? it only charges
3: Extension cable - I have purchased a 20cm 11pin female to male cable so i can sit the Note outside the dock in landscape. Nothing is recognised using this. I know there is an app to force rotation but i feel safer placing it in landscape with a Moko case.
Would i be right in assuming the Dock is 11pin connector ? and the note 8 11pin also ?.
4: Anyway of editing the default keyboard layout without rooting ? MelE F10Pro needs a few default keys changing.
Advanced apology if this should be posted in Accessories sub
Thanks in advance

I don't know about the Smart Dock, but I do have the MHL to HDMI adapter.
Your monitor or TV must have the ability to do a smart sync or have options to allow for vertical and horizontal size adjustment.
As for the wired HDMI, you will need to plug in the Samsung charger into the dock (it should have a USB connection), and use a good quality 6ft / 1.6m HDMI cable.
My Samsung TV has a hidden HDMI feature for PC input. You must use the HDMI source that has a PC DB15 input associated with it. In my case HDMI 3 input, and go into the menu for input label and change it to PC. Once that is done, you will have the ability to adjust the TV and should note that the image may have a blank unused area for a boarder (picture frame) around the image.
The maximum resolution is 1280x800 but the kicker is the app and the resolution of the tablet itself. All 1080i will be converted to 1280x800 maximum. I got tired of cabling, and ended up getting a mid priced HDMI dongle which allows miracast. They are both compatible for picture image. Just there is a distance and bandwidth limitation with wireless, so you must have a good signal and proper connection speeds to maintain high bandwidth to the dongle.

Does the Xperia Z5 Premium support USB monitors?

Hello, I am considering buying this monitor: https://www.asus.com/Monitors/MB168BPlus/
Does anybody know whether it would work?
Thanks in advance
I'd say your best bet would be to look at getting an MHL adaptor and using HDMI.
I contacted Displaylink, and this is the reply I got:
"Hi
The monitor will need to be connected through an externally powered hub, as the Sony phone will not deliver enough power for the display.
Best regards,

Hello,
I can confirm that the MB168B+ does work (very well) with the Z5P.
It is correct that the monitor will draw too much power to run direct from the Z5P; you can use a mains powered Hub as mentioned in the thread but you can also use a 'Power Bank' type rechargeable battery in conjunction with an OTG Host Adapter if you need freedom from a mains socket.
The inherent limitation is then simply the capacity of your batteries (you can't concurrently charge the phone while using the micro-USB OTG connection to the display).
Use the native Settings | Device Connection | USB Connectivity to find the ASUS MB168B+
You just need to install DisplayLink Desktop from the Play store (free App), follow the on-screen instructions and away you go.
The app is currently limited to 1 DisplayLink display, operating at a maximum resolution of 1920x1080 (1080p).
One limitation is that the ASUS screen only seems to work in landscape orientation with Android. Brilliant for any App, Video, etc., displaying in landscape 16:9, but doesn't realise the full potential of also being able to give you a full Portrait image using the entire screen with it rotated through 90 degrees.
With the phone connected and home screen displayed, the mirrored image will be upright and centred on the screen.
If you go to an app which supports landscape mode, the ASUS display will follow the physical orientation of the phone to full HD landscape presentation.
The MB168B+ has a built-in Auto Rotate feature which can automatically senses its orientation and switches the display between landscape and portrait based on its position - it works when driven from Windows, but apparently not with the current Android flavoured DisplayLink Driver.. Undoubtedly possible, but one for some permutation of DisplayLink and ASUS to figure and add the functionality into the driver.
That would be particularly handy if you wanted to demonstrate the phone's Home Screen, Settings, etc. to an audience. But doesn't diminish the opportunity to display, for example, 1080p Video straight from the phone onto a decent size screen.
I will take some photos to illustrate the display in operation, running on battery power, and upload later this evening.... now added below:
PS. If you are thinking of buying the ASUS screen, there is a newer model - ASUS MB169B+ recently released with an IPS panel (rather than WLED/ TN) which should be visually a meaningful improvement
[TN has a high response rate and good for gaming, but suffers from colour distortion, especially at wider viewing angles; IPS gives much more accurate colour rendition and across wide viewing angles and is better for photography, video viewing and design].PPS. The stand the ASUS screen is on in the photos is a Belkin FlipBlade - personally I much prefer to the arrangement using the supplied carry sleeve for relatively static desktop use, although that works absolutely fine and is particularly handy if you only want to have the screen in its' case with you and no extra gubbins.
Best regards,
Kevin

Hi Kevin,
Just curious but what rom are you using for your phone to look like that? Sorry, I'm pretty new to this set up but your phone setup and music player looks awesome! I like those toggles as well. Can you show me how to make mine look something like that? :fingers-crossed:

Hello - thank you for the comments - I'm happy to try and illuminate a bit......
It's the stock ROM as supplied, seasoned with an assortment of apps and widgets.
As this is a bit off topic, I've added a new post with proper screenshots and details of the components in the 'Home Screen' thread instead.
Have a look there and by all means let me know if you've any further questions.
Best regards,
Kevin

Thanks very much for your helpful post, excellent.
I notice in the image you have a power bank (I'm assuming) - could you please share your experiences with powering the monitor from a power bank particularly how much screen time you manage to have, what the monitor brightness is set to and what capacity your power bank is.
Thanks!

Hello and thanks for the enquiry. I'm glad you found the original post helpful
Yes, it is a small power bank shown in the pictures. That one is Vinsic 5000 Ah model. It's almost identical in size to a slim 2.5" hard drive such as the Seagate Slim 2TB models and fits very neatly into a neoprene protective sleeve from Clas Ohlsson. I also have a much bigger Vinsic 20000 Ah power bank which gives 4x the capacity. That's also the maximum capacity allowed by IATA (in checked or carry-on baggage).
Since the previous post I've gone over to the newer Asus MB 169 B+ with the IPS display, but for the purposes of power it behaves the same as the MB 168 B+.
I will add some more images in the next few days, including the big Vinsic and more details about run time, etc.
Best regards,
Kevin
Im trying to get my Asus MB169B+ to work with my Samsung S7 Edge.
But after a while it once asked to open the connection with DisplayLink Presenter, and it did work (Also with powerbank as mentioned above).
But it never asks me again, and opening the DisplayLink Presenter doesnt help as well.
How can i connect my S7 Edge to my Asus MB169B+ ?
Thanks
