So I ran into Subsonic, which I thought was cool because it was open source and worked great in Linux (a must), etc. I found myself slightly confused as it seems as if you need to donate to the project for the software to be fully utilized, despite the fact it's free. AKA - you need to pay for the software for it to work. Okay, great, but I'm a little unsure as to what you have to donate. If I donate a dollar, is that sufficient?
At any rate, I began considering alternatives. I'm looking for something that I can stream my music from my own Linux based server right on to my Nexus 7... sort of like my own personal Pandora, except with control over which songs to play from the library. I really cannot stress how disinterested I am in running software through Wine, so if the server portion isn't Linux based, I'd rather keep looking.
Is Subsonic the sure-fire win, or are there others out there worth considering with an Android app that works on the Nexus 7?
Just use Google music, there is a Linux version. Flawless streaming to my nexus 7. Try it..

+1 for google music
I'm certainly open to Google Music. I just wasn't liking the fact I'd have to actually upload the music since my internet connection leaves something to be desired, whereas if I did my own internal streaming I could have 200GB transferred to my server in a matter of minutes.
I'll fire Google Music back up. Maybe by winter I'll have my music uploaded.
try TuneIn radio is excellent
Di.fm (digitally imported)
I'm a premium user (yearly), but its super cheap.
Free works great too.
It plays all those genres you don't find much on Spotify & Napster

Did you try the usual suspects...Pandora, Spotify, or Stitcher Radio? I heard good things abour Rdio as well.
I use Rdio for basically keeping a collection at the ready. Soundcloud for mixes and stuff. Ex.FM and Last.FM for discovery. Google music for my MP3s from my archive. Pandora for radio. I pay for Rdio and Soundcloud although the latter has a free option. DI for radio as well. Used to use Grooveshark and Slacker but they just don't do it as well any more.

Google Music for my songs, and Grooveshark for everything else(playlists, Queuing, and desktop sync to GS)
I started using Subsonic for the same reasons that you are looking for. I've been using it for over 2 years now and love it. Yes, the developer does ask for a $10 donation for a license to use the video/REST api, even though the source is fully available but I've found it to be a great investment and you only have to pay once, unlike streaming services that have a monthly fee. Plus, once you have a license your allow to use it on as many machines as you want. I find the server very well written, the project has a very active community, there are frequently new features added and plus you can share your music with whoever you want, since it's your music to start with.
Jango is great too.

I've used Subsonic for years and even did a small piece of development on the Android client. With that said, I have started using Google Music recently too.
Subsonic is still a good alternative though if you don't want to upload your music to the cloud. If you really don't want to pay a couple of bucks to Sindre (who built Subsonic), you could always download the source and either remove the license validation part or simply reverse engineer it and figure out how he validates the license in order to make your own licenses. I would recommend just giving him a couple of bucks though.
$10 is worth it.

I love tunein Radio. Best app by far
I've been using Subsonic for 2 years now. Best 10 bucks I ever spent. The developer is easy to reach and listens closely to suggestions, etc.
Overall a great app, and an absolute must if you have a big collection you want to host from home. No need to upload to the cloud, etc. Did I mention it does video streaming and has plenty of transcoding options? Works great as a media server for use on the computer as well. And you can upload music remotely. Tons of great features.
Premium Spotify user here. Never need to download music ever again. Never thought I would go legit like this. Tuesday new music release days are the best. Listen to what you want when you want to. Share music with friend, see what others are listening to, radio feature, apps, etc. Plus offline listening when you're w/o wifi.

Ah okay. See I wasn't sure what the donation required as I couldn't find an actual number anywhere. I was confused, thinking, okay, do I just donate 10 cents or does it require 180 bucks? I gave up pretty quickly though since I've got 100 other projects going on around the house...
That said, I've been uploading my music to Google Music continuously 247 since I posted this thread. 1,000 uploaded, and uh... a helluva lot more to go...
Sorry, Google Music, you are insanely awesome and convenient, but nothing (and I mean nothing) will ever beat the speed convenience of LAN-based storage. That's why I use ownCloud on my server for my own Dropbox-esque personal storage, and now, Subsonic. I'll fire off the donation to Subsonic later tonight and get it fully set up. :good:

Oh my GOSH Subsonic is amazing. I dumped it on my server, pushed 100GB of music over to it, donated 10 bucks, got the key emailed immediately, plugged it in and bingo bango - we're running. I'm streaming music on my desktop as well as my tablet without a hitch. Super handy.
I still find it kind of confusing. If you need to donate for the license in order to stream from your own server... what functionality is Subsonic otherwise? I mean, it's great it's labeled as free and whatnot, but how is that entirely accurate? What CAN you do if you opt not to donate (and therefore not receive a key) since, after all, you wouldn't be streaming from your own personal server? (which is the entire point behind Subsonic as I understand it)
EDIT -
Donate for premium features like:
Apps for Android, iPhone, WP 7, PlayBook, Roku and more*.
Video streaming.
Share your media on Facebook, Twitter, Google+.
No ads.
Your personal server address: yourname.subsonic.org
Er... wait... the donation allows additional devices to work besides computers? Thereby suggesting streaming from my laptop on my LAN would have been supported without donating? Don't get me wrong, I like knowing I donated to help this deveoper out, I just want to make sure if I help spread the word of Subsonic I know the licensing so I can explain it. Thanks!

+1 on that Google Music is what made me pull the trigger on buying a 16gb nexus. I no longer need tons of space on a phone to hold all my music!
I just gave up on iTunes syncing. I hated Doubletwist, so now I just drag and drop. I also spend less time with my music library because of Spotify. Also, check out Salling Media Sync. Its available in the Mac App Store. Its expensive, but I've heard good things about it.

Same. Been using for months. Its awesome.
Can't use Google music in the OK. Very dissapointing!
i use subsonic on my linux server instead
Just to add my tuppence
Being a recent convert to the Android fold (brand new GN - still awaiting update ), and having used iTunes/iPhone for too long, I felt the need to find an app that would let me sync iTunes playlists.
I tried a shed-load of apps; doubletwist was pure crap (IMHO) and not worth the effort, WinAmp might "really whip the llama's ass" but didn't "really know how to sync a playlist" well enough to warrant me keeping it.
I then found iSyncr and the WiFi plugin and these did exactly what they said they would, seamlessly and effortlessly. The free version would only sync 30 tracks per playlist so the paltry price they were asking for it seemed worth it to me.
As for the Google Music point... not available to UK users yet but there is a very simple workaround, just waiting to set this up on my phone.
I second the Subsonic recommendation. It's been around for a while, use it on my phone, browser, wife's iphone.
It does what Google Music does, but you have more control and I believe it does video too. It definitely isn't as easy to setup and use as GM though, so a big caveat there.
iSyncR WiFi sync didn't work for me. I then used DoubleTwist Air Sync to sync. Worked well. The playlists are recognized by PowerAmp, so all is good (as I dislike the DoubleTwist player).
hey, i used iSyncR too, but a lot of songs in the playlists are missing (not only the bought ones) and some pictures are not at the right songs. that really sucks. you may have an alternetive for me? in germany google music is not available now;( besides you always need a good connection for streaming.
thx for answers
While trying to get my music on my GS2, I found the easiest way was through the doubletwist player with Airsync. Seems to be a good player. Was using Google music, but that streams abd uses up my data.

Been using winamp for about a day now. On my computer iTunes manages all my music so I wanted a music player that could sync with iTunes. Winamp does that fine and I like the layout of the player but it has one rather large inconvenience for me: the playlists don't sync. I went into the settings, specified that it sync all my playlists and specified I wanted them on H:\ (my SD card), but nothing :/
I really like Google music. And just so you know, you can save all the to the phone with one press of a button so it doesn't use the data . You can undo it just as easy.

Interesting.....when you do that doesn't it use up your storage space on the phone, being that it is downloaded to the device storage and also does it not use the data to to download it to the phone?
Google music works like this. It stream music from your library to your android device. If you lose connection it can stream past played songs that it has saved. So yes it uses storage, and yes it uses data. But it doesn't use much storage.

I was liking stock for a while, but then Raycaster3 told me about PowerAmp, yes you have to pay for it but its by far gives you the most options and great sound quality. I did a test also with it to see how it sounds compared to the stock 5.1 sound. And it sounded the same if not better. Then you mix PowerAmp with a nice set of SkullCandy in ear headphones and your golden. I dont mean anything too expensive either I just went with the $29 ones because they also come with a mic. They are amazing. Oh I guess I also use Google Music because I have 40gigs of music stored in the Google Music Cloud.

Not to brag...but been a long time PowerAmp Pro user since my Nexus One days, and used with my Monster Turbine Gold Ear Buds....nothing short of awesomeness...PS....spent the last two days walking the carpets at the CES Las Vegas extravaganza and and I listened to no less than a dozen competing Ear Bud companies. The Monster Turbines won hands down for purest, smoothest, most pleasing sound quality, IMHO. Oh....I did get to demo a new Headset I saw featured on Fox and Friends before my first trip to the show a couple of days ago. My Bose QC15 noise canceling over the ears headphones got knocked of by a new company I first heard about at the show. ZIK Parrot phones. They work wired as well as Bluetooth wireless. Sound was great but the added features of hand gestures to control volume and track changes was/ is the way of the future. Instead of dealing with unplugging the phones to pause, simply remove from your ears and the music comes to a stop. Put them back on and it starts back where you left off. No price on these since they are not yet released to the public.
But don't even get me going on the best of the event....LG's 55" OLED 3D TV. Will knock anyone's socks off...period, guaranteed, and I will bet the farm on this statement. Thickness = to 3 credit cards stacked!!! Sorry for the slight thread drift, BTW....

Just spent an hour comparing. Yes, I downloaded the much needed DSP pack. PowerAMP WINS, IMHO, hands down. Give it a fair try to compare all aspects. Going thru the menu more preferences is extremely important too.
My 3 favorites in order:
1. ZPlayer - I really love the Zune player on Mango and this is a very good clone of it. It has integrated Shoutcast, a nice UI, a very nice lock screen controls that displays picture of whatever artist is playing as the lockscreen background, artist bio, widgets, equalizer and more. It's missing a few features, such as better playlist creation, but it's a very sexy and stylish player.
2. PowerAmp - The most complete player on the market. Has just about everything I mentioned ZPlayer has (minus Shoutcast and artist bio), in addition to good playlist management. Only cons, is it costs $, doesn't have automatic mixing like the Google player, and no streaming from Google or Amazon. Still just about the best player on the market. Only reason I put Zplayer higher is because I prefer the Zune player look of Zplayer, but that's totally personal preference.
3. Google Music - Great player, but a few things are holding it back. If I have music stored locally, when it syncs with Google it will duplicate the music, so for example I have two Nine Inch Nail artists in Google Music. I wish it would not display the music stored on Google if it already resides locally. Also will always stream by default, even if song is stored locally. Again, they need to make it so that it looks to see if song is stored locally and play that instead of reverting to streaming everything. Automatic mixing only available for streamed music (FYI, when I mention automatic mixing, I'm referring to the feature that is similar to Genius on apple devices - both iTunes on iPhone and Zune on WP7 offer this feature for music stored locally, Google player does not). Interface is a bit clunky.
Those are my personal 3 favorites. If I could find one that marries the UI of ZPlayer, with the features of PowerAmp and streaming capabilities of Google Music, it would be perfect.
Thanks,
Very informative. I loved Google Music, but with Tmobile throttling, not feasable. Is there a hack to get around the throttling?

Look for a thread in the General section. Use Throttling for a search. You will find it Read the thread and specifically go here.

This was referenced in the thread and goes into more detail.
I don't know how long this is going to work, but I have tested this myself and it does indeed keep yopu separated from T-Mobiles grasp on your data usage. I have the feeling this won't last long, based on too many people talking in the open.
EDIT..many of the Roms are also including hacks that help the throttling issue, but not like this which all together bypasses the counting.
For me it's really a two way tie. Poweramp and miui music.

Hey all,
I'm looking for some way to sync my GN with iTunes for quite a while now, but I haven't been able to find anything that matches my wishes.
The program must be able to do as following:
Sync regular music / playlists etc. Selectable per song
Sync podcasts. Must be selectable per podcast, not per podcast producer!! [*Note]
No limitations to the amount of music / podcasts synchronized.
Preferably a free program, because I don't know how long I'll be using it for and I don't want to pay a lot for something I barely used.
Now here are some more problems:
For the people who say I should stop using iTunes and use winamp or something similar: Please stop trying to change peoples preferences (advice is always appreciated though). I've tried every possible music player around, but iTunes just is the best when it comes to podcasts and having a lot of playlists. (In my opinion that is)
I'm from the Netherlands, so Google Music unfortunately isn't an option.
If anybody has a suggestion, I'm more then willing to try it out, I'm really frustrated about this by now.
/Tim
[*Note] Hereby I mean I want to be able to select podcasts as following: Podcasts 1, 5 and 6 by producer A. Podcasts 2, 7 and 45 by producer B. I've seen a lot of programs which only enable you to sync the last .... per producer, or the last .... which you haven't listened to yet. I want to be able to select them individually.

The other day this lady at work said "I don't think you should be doing that on office time". I had YouTube on just for the music. I wasn't watching videos. She said, "But I can't even hear it" and I said "I have it low enough that only I can hear it at my desk."
Is there something that I can play YouTube and turn the screen off with it still playing?

What did you have to pay $2.46 for hasn't cost me anything it's free?
Also if you select music mode in settings you can save your band with.
Maybe Plex does the same thing? I have the paid version. It was 99 cents over on Amazon, but I don't use it. Initially I just wanted something to browse my PC from my phone because I had issues with ES File Explorer, but I solved them. Anyway I'm not gonna use Plex.
Why did PVStar cost $2.46? I bought the Pro version.. no advertisements and I support developers if I like something. I've bought a bunch of apps, including supporting ViperOne ROM and the guy who made the Firewater S-OFF for the M8.
Another nice feature is I think the software spoofs YouTube into thinking I am on a fullsize PC! Before videos searches on my PC and my phone would differ. Not so anymore! When I used to search at home I'd get a full concert. When I searched on my phone I'd get a list of 6 or 7 separate videos that make up the full concert. Not anymore. I can just queue up the one video.

Hi everyone,
Two weeks ago when I got my Moto 360, I started using the voice commands and I was amazed by how well the voice recognition does its job. Then, only a few days later I was eating some pizza, getting my hands dirty, and then I noticed that there was an awkwardly silent in the room with a couple of friends, and the idea to play some tunes using my watch came to my mind. I tried saying some commands to see if it works, since I saw that we could assign apps to "Play music" voice action, but none of the actions I tried worked. I felt a little bit frustrated for a moment, but then I realized that it is quite simple to connect Spotify and the Wear Voice Commands. It was when I created this app: Voice Controller for Spotify. (Yes, I suck at naming)

Voice Controller for Spotify allows you to use voice commands to play songs on your phone from your Android Wear device.
Simply assign Voice Controller for Spotify as the "Play music" app on the Android Wear application on your phone, and start playing your tunes.
The application also allows the use of a native player instead of the Spotify App. Native player uses the BETA Spotify SDK.
A PREMIUM SPOTIFY ACCOUNT IS REQUIRED TO USE THIS APP.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.voicecontroller
I published the app just a few hours ago, and I would love to get some feedback. Unfortunately the users that are able to use it are only the ones that have an Android Wear device and uses Spotify with premium, which kinda reduces a lot the overall amount of users, compared to other android apps. So, if you have a moto 360 and use Spotify with Premium, please check out the app, and if possible, send me some feedback, I would love to keep improving it and helping more users to break the awkward silent haha.
Thanks!
I've just been given a moto 360 for Christmas (love it!) and this is exactly what I've been looking for so thank you! Unfortunately, I cannot find it anywhere...

@tsy87 Awesome! Please, let me know what you think. Any feedback is most welcome
Love the idea of being able to instantly play any artist by just saying there name. This is great... One issue though.
I have an LG Flex running 4.4.2 and when I have the option turned on to use the native player it crashes. It will pop up on the watch that its sending to the phone then the phone says "voice controller stopped responding" but moving it to use just the Spotify player will open Spotify and start playing that artist.
Sent from my LG-LS995 using Tapatalk
Thanks for testing it out @felacio! The only problem of using the Spotify App is that sometimes it hangs/freezes when it is closed and you try to open it to listen to a track. But I am not so sure if this issue only happens on my Moto X running 5.0... Due to that, I created the native player that will basically use the Spotify SDK to play songs instead of opening the app. It seems that the native player has a compatibility problem that I am currently working on, so if you're on KK, keep using the Spotify App for now, and if you don't have the issue on its initialization, feel free to use it forever and ever
Thanks for this! Didn't work with the native app for me couldn't get anything to play with the native app open or not. Works fine with the Spotify app!
Problem though, I've asked it to play an artist and it'll play one song. But when I go to skip it, it seems to just pause because there's not another song in the queue I assume?
Edit: just left you a Google play rating, hopefully that'll start to get you up in the search results ?
Edit2: also, I'd quite like the ability to say "play music" and it play all of my music, it is just playing Charlie XCX - Boom Clap atm and that's not in my music.

Thanks! I just pushed an update that should fix issues with the native player, but as I said before, if it is working with Spotify app, you guys should just keep using it
Right now, I am just enqueuing one song and if you ask to play another one, the app basically skips that and starts playing the next one. But adding more songs or distinct new voice commands are on the list!
The planned features that I have on the roadmap right now are:
- Enqueue songs using "Play <artist/track name> next"
- Play a playlist using "Play <name or partial name of your playlist> playlist"
- If the first track finishes and there are no more in the queue, play more songs of the artist/composer of last song. (would love opinions if this is the best way to "handle" when the music stops)
I will definitely add your suggested feature to the list, probably together with the second one, since they are related
Note that some of these features might not be available if you are using the Spotify app. I need to check but I think you can't enqueue songs on Spotify, if you send a new song, it will just skip the one it is playing.
Again, thanks for the positive rating and feedback!
Sounds good! I look forward to it. I think the only perfect command for me would be a shuffle all music command, that's really all I use spotify for...

Hi Yurifariasg, your app is great idea, I like it. I downloaded now, but I have a still problem with app in my phone. App works well on my Moto 360, but on my Samsung S4 mini with Android 4.4.2 it doesnt work. Have you idea where can be a problem, pls?
Thank you, Vanda
Great app idea! Some feedback on my testing. Here's what I'm using
Moto360 updated to 5.0.1
Galaxy Note 4 on 4.4.4 (non-rooted)
Spotify Premium - Logged into the app
I set Voice Controller for Spotify as the music player in the Android Wear app. If I try to open the VCfS app on my phone, I receive an error message that says "Unfortunately Voice Controller for Spotify (BETA) has stopped." When I ask my Moto360 to play a song, it seems to correctly search and I receive the confirmation but on the phone side, I receive a notification: "Could not play song - Your must be logged in to be able to play songs on native player."
If I open Spotify, I confirm I am logged in and can play the track from within Spotify.
Hope the feedback helps!

I should add that if I use the voice command to play a song when Android Wear is connected to Play Music, it finds and plays the song no problem. It's quite slow, but it works.

Hi @vanda, Thanks for checking the app! The problem you are having is another issue with KitKat compatibility, looks like it was something on the way KK handle the views, it is weird that this issue didn't show up on the emulator and neither with other users before.... That's why is important to get this feedback from you, thanks for helping me out! I just pushed a fix for that and should go out on version 1.0.4, please check that out again and let me know if you run in any more problems.

Hi @Ducaticorse, the native player is enabled by default on the app, and it requires you to sign in on the application. Since you could not open it (due to the same problem @vanda had), you were not able to do that, and couldn't neither change the player (to use the Spotify app). This compatibility issue should be fixed on 1.0.4 and you will be able to log in to use native player or change the configuration to use the Spotify App to play your tunes! Please check that out, and let me know if you get any more errors.
Thanks!
New problem since the latest update. Now when I ask it to play a certain band it will say its sending the request and then nothing happens. Before this update it would send, about 2 seconds later it would pop up on the watch saying its now playing "so-and-so's song" and it would play, unless I had "use native player" selected and then it would just crash.
But now, nothing happens at all.

Hi @felacio, which version are you using (1.0.4?) are you logged in the app? Is it still crashing when you select native player and tries to use the app?
I didn't see any crashes on the developer console with the newest version 1.0.4, but maybe there's some hidden exception somewhere...

[EDIT] I just found an issue when the app can't find a track using the Spotify Web API, currently it just doesn't do anything, no confirmation, no dialog saying it couldn't found, nothing.. I guess this is what is happening to you.... Have you tried different queries with more popular artists?
I'll add a notification on the next version to inform the user when his/her query returned no results.
