Is there something that I can play YouTube and turn the screen off with it still play - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The other day this lady at work said "I don't think you should be doing that on office time". I had YouTube on just for the music. I wasn't watching videos. She said, "But I can't even hear it" and I said "I have it low enough that only I can hear it at my desk."
Is there something that I can play YouTube and turn the screen off with it still playing?
I have no interest in using Spotify or other software. I also don't have any interest in taking up my 32GB of memory with mp3's.

I use a app called Viral Youtube Pro worked amazing and you can watch videos while browsing as well works flawlessly !

PVstar works great for this
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...ce=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_term=pvstar+

Thanks! PVStar is awesome so far. You can queue up multiple videos. I'd much rather pay $2.46 for something than $9.99 a month. I realize I'm probably supporting music artists the Spotify way, but if I really like music I buy it to begin with.
You guys are great!

Why not setup a media server like Madsonic? Everything is free and you can stream your MP3 collection along with setting up Podcast streams.

What did you have to pay $2.46 for hasn't cost me anything it's free?
Also if you select music mode in settings you can save your band with.

Maybe Plex does the same thing? I have the paid version. It was 99 cents over on Amazon, but I don't use it. Initially I just wanted something to browse my PC from my phone because I had issues with ES File Explorer, but I solved them. Anyway I'm not gonna use Plex.
Why did PVStar cost $2.46? I bought the Pro version.. no advertisements and I support developers if I like something. I've bought a bunch of apps, including supporting ViperOne ROM and the guy who made the Firewater S-OFF for the M8.
Another nice feature is I think the software spoofs YouTube into thinking I am on a fullsize PC! Before videos searches on my PC and my phone would differ. Not so anymore! When I used to search at home I'd get a full concert. When I searched on my phone I'd get a list of 6 or 7 separate videos that make up the full concert. Not anymore. I can just queue up the one video.

Media Playback

I had all but given up hope on this topic, but I guess I'll ask.
The Samsung Galaxy S will play Divx/Xvid/MKV natively without a conversion. This is probably one of the best features I have ever heard, as I have hoped for it to be in some sort of mobile device I already owned, such as a phone, psp, or some other multi-purpose device, instead of having to buy a standalone media player which tends to play many formats.
All videos I watch are encoded in these formats (well mkv encoded in x264, with mkv container). Is there, or will there ever be a way to play these on Android 2.1 or 2.2 for other models? I have an evo, and would be EC-FREAKING-STATIC if I could just drag and drop videos to watch on it. Especially with the hdmi out!! I love the evo, I really think it is great. This one feature is the icing on the cake for me.
If it cannot be done, can somebody just give me a brief description as to why? The way I see it, when you need to play these files on a pc, you just install a video codec to decode it. Isn't there some way it can be added?
Thanks to anyone who takes the time to answer this.
P.S.- For anyone who thinks conversion isn't a big deal, I agree, it really isn't. The thing is, a lot of the time I find out I need to be somewhere, have to leave right away, and don't have anything converted to watch. I can't tell you how many times I wish I had this feature!
atm there are not many options, at least as far as i know...
stock player (good baseline h264 playback)
rockplayer (good divx/xvid playback)
yxplayer (decent main/high h264 playback)
for everything else, i simply have "stream" folder on my PC, drop all other vids there, and play them using OrbLive while on the go.
Damn I have been living in the dark. Thanks!
just finished playing with rockplayer, and its pretty darn good
im actually waiting for something bad to happen, and then i
remember... I'm not using a windows mobile phone anymore.

Develop app for movie site

Hey everyone,
i m looking for someone to develop an application that is some what of a video player. I want the app to list all the movies on the website then allows you to play them with a full screen video player. You kno like when u click a video from youtube and it opens a nice fulo screen? Also l, how it lists all the contents of the site...
I would post all types of movies from 2010 to whatever.
As far as payment.. i will sharw half of the profits with the develiper. I will pay the cost for the server, etc.
I would like a multi-platform app, but i will settle for android for now.
You can call me at 347 SNAKE16 or simply reply to this post.....
Thx
Suggestions and commments are also welcomed...
*This was posted from my Sprint Evo 4G cell phone using Tapatalkpro! *
I hope you arent planning on trying to make an app / server to sell or rent movies you download or even buy (unless it is a renters copy and have permission to stream or distribute digitally which would be a huge cost if you even could) etc. you will find yourself in big trouble really fast doing so.

The first YouTube download tool for windows phone 7

I find a youtube tool for windows phone 7. It is called 'SuperTube'. It can let you browse High Definition (720P, 360P) and download the videos from YouTube
Here is the link to download the trial version.

The Trial is full featured, and has ads only in the menu (not in the videos), but you can download and keep only 3 videos per day, so no restrictions on the streaming.
For those wondering, the app uses the 360P and 720P MP4s used by Youtube, downloads them, and plays using the phone codecs directly (although the player has a different UI).
This is similar to, say KeepVid or KeepTube in its extraction of Youtube videos.
The quality was awesome. The UI of the app, not so much.
Double Posted for some reason. :/

As far as I know, there are NO limitations on viewing videos. But if you want to actually keep it, then there are 3...per day. Need to confirm this though for myself.
nope its not 3 per day, it just state I reached my download limit for trial...
I downloaded this, good find, thanks
It's very good, but would be awesome if it linked into your Zune library (i.e. the videos downloaded appeared in Videos), but I'm not sure if that's possible or not...
The trial is 3 vids total. Figured I'd better buy it in case it gets pulled from the Marketplace

[Q] Best video format?

i've never really watched videos on my phones (mostly due to screen size etc) but i figure now that I have the Galaxy Nexus i could watch a few things on it..
What would be the best video format to convert things to? I dropped an avi of a tv program onto it and it worked but it lagged a bit..
I just converted something to an HD mp4 using Permute for Mac, it bumped the filesize up about 100mb but tested it and it runs smooth in QuickPic or PlayerPro but when trying to use the built in video player (to get the true full screen) it plays for a second, stutters, then says it can't be played.. :S
has anyone managed to get moboplayer working ? says i need an arm7 neon codec - found that on their site ... followed instructions but it still wont work
Video playback may be a bit iffy until the apps are updated; one of the Diceplayer mob posted saying that it now supports HD playback for .mkv. They didn't mention .avi but that generally needs less resources than .avi so you could try your avi in Diceplayer.
The general trend in open source video development is towards .mkv, I'm trying that first.
I'd be surprised if much works well right out of the gate. The true beta is when the masses begin tinkering
vplayer seems to play avi nicely
Ill have to try it out.. downloading now
I've got the same question. And I don't mean what other player can I download to play movies. I mean what format can I encode videos in to get them to play in the native player. I did find the article below. I have tried each of these formats with no luck. Anyone know why Android can't play a movie out of the box?
http://developer.android.com/guide/appendix/media-formats.html
And I also tired MoboPlayer with no luck.
pretty much if you use a baseline .mp4 format you will be fine
basically:
h.264 video
LC-AAC audio
no CABAC
and you should be fine up to 1080p these settings work on all my android devices
just set mpeg 4 level 4 and it should take care of it by itself

Thanks noobdeagle,
I have tired those settings on several encoders (handbrake, Adobe Media Encoder, Magic DVD ripper) and still no success. What software are you using to encode? and have you tried the movies on the galaxy nexus? Because I have never had a problem on any other Android devices. Just this one.

gave up re-encoding videos.
vplayer has played everything ive thrown at it so far. the built in movie player seems very limited.

I appreciate the feedback but I have two problems with this particular advice.
1 - Have you seen the permissions for that player? Why would a video player need access to my "Phone calls - Read phone status and identity" and "Your personal information - Read sensitive log data"? Really?
2 - Why the hell can't this phone play videos out of the box. <rant>I have, as I suspect a lot of us here do, a fair few friends that I would call iPhone fanboys. One of the biggest gripes I always hear about android is that every time you run into a problem on Android is the best answer is to root your phone and install cyanogen, or go get xxxx app and that will take care of it, or you should have bought this phone instead. So I get this phone and think that finally Android is going to hit the main stream and I can't even play a movie. WTF!</rant>
Like I said, I appreciate the feedback but I am still looking for a way to play a video in the default video player.

no i have not tried on a galaxy nexus yet as that one week delay sim free means i wont be able to have mine in my hands untill at least next week :\,
i use mediacoder to encode videos, cant speak for the GN but ive used it for my xoom, nexus S, desire hd, htc legend and SGS 2 in the past (however SGS2 supported all codecs quite nicely anyway)
according to the android dev site the supported video list hasnt changed so this is quite strange.

Thanks for the info. I will seek out and try mediacoder.
FYI...I got my GN SIM free from Phones 4U. It was not easy though. I went in to a few stores before finding one that would sell it to me SIM free. And I think that I happened upon the manager at the store that did sell it to me. What makes it even better is that I am in the UK on business for a few months and so I can get the VAT back on my way out. Which makes it nearly 90 quid cheaper.
Thanks again,
cj
seems as if media coder works. Though that is one complicated program. You could get lost in those settings for days.

Best Music App??

While trying to get my music on my GS2, I found the easiest way was through the doubletwist player with Airsync. Seems to be a good player. Was using Google music, but that streams abd uses up my data.
What is your favorite music player???
The stock one works fine, had a few others but none stick out for me.

Been using winamp for about a day now. On my computer iTunes manages all my music so I wanted a music player that could sync with iTunes. Winamp does that fine and I like the layout of the player but it has one rather large inconvenience for me: the playlists don't sync. I went into the settings, specified that it sync all my playlists and specified I wanted them on H:\ (my SD card), but nothing :/
I really like Google music. And just so you know, you can save all the to the phone with one press of a button so it doesn't use the data . You can undo it just as easy.
Was on power Amp now I'm using player pro

Interesting.....when you do that doesn't it use up your storage space on the phone, being that it is downloaded to the device storage and also does it not use the data to to download it to the phone?
Google music works like this. It stream music from your library to your android device. If you lose connection it can stream past played songs that it has saved. So yes it uses storage, and yes it uses data. But it doesn't use much storage.

I was liking stock for a while, but then Raycaster3 told me about PowerAmp, yes you have to pay for it but its by far gives you the most options and great sound quality. I did a test also with it to see how it sounds compared to the stock 5.1 sound. And it sounded the same if not better. Then you mix PowerAmp with a nice set of SkullCandy in ear headphones and your golden. I dont mean anything too expensive either I just went with the $29 ones because they also come with a mic. They are amazing. Oh I guess I also use Google Music because I have 40gigs of music stored in the Google Music Cloud.

Not to brag...but been a long time PowerAmp Pro user since my Nexus One days, and used with my Monster Turbine Gold Ear Buds....nothing short of awesomeness...PS....spent the last two days walking the carpets at the CES Las Vegas extravaganza and and I listened to no less than a dozen competing Ear Bud companies. The Monster Turbines won hands down for purest, smoothest, most pleasing sound quality, IMHO. Oh....I did get to demo a new Headset I saw featured on Fox and Friends before my first trip to the show a couple of days ago. My Bose QC15 noise canceling over the ears headphones got knocked of by a new company I first heard about at the show. ZIK Parrot phones. They work wired as well as Bluetooth wireless. Sound was great but the added features of hand gestures to control volume and track changes was/ is the way of the future. Instead of dealing with unplugging the phones to pause, simply remove from your ears and the music comes to a stop. Put them back on and it starts back where you left off. No price on these since they are not yet released to the public.
But don't even get me going on the best of the event....LG's 55" OLED 3D TV. Will knock anyone's socks off...period, guaranteed, and I will bet the farm on this statement. Thickness = to 3 credit cards stacked!!! Sorry for the slight thread drift, BTW....

Just spent an hour comparing. Yes, I downloaded the much needed DSP pack. PowerAMP WINS, IMHO, hands down. Give it a fair try to compare all aspects. Going thru the menu more preferences is extremely important too.
My 3 favorites in order:
1. ZPlayer - I really love the Zune player on Mango and this is a very good clone of it. It has integrated Shoutcast, a nice UI, a very nice lock screen controls that displays picture of whatever artist is playing as the lockscreen background, artist bio, widgets, equalizer and more. It's missing a few features, such as better playlist creation, but it's a very sexy and stylish player.
2. PowerAmp - The most complete player on the market. Has just about everything I mentioned ZPlayer has (minus Shoutcast and artist bio), in addition to good playlist management. Only cons, is it costs $, doesn't have automatic mixing like the Google player, and no streaming from Google or Amazon. Still just about the best player on the market. Only reason I put Zplayer higher is because I prefer the Zune player look of Zplayer, but that's totally personal preference.
3. Google Music - Great player, but a few things are holding it back. If I have music stored locally, when it syncs with Google it will duplicate the music, so for example I have two Nine Inch Nail artists in Google Music. I wish it would not display the music stored on Google if it already resides locally. Also will always stream by default, even if song is stored locally. Again, they need to make it so that it looks to see if song is stored locally and play that instead of reverting to streaming everything. Automatic mixing only available for streamed music (FYI, when I mention automatic mixing, I'm referring to the feature that is similar to Genius on apple devices - both iTunes on iPhone and Zune on WP7 offer this feature for music stored locally, Google player does not). Interface is a bit clunky.
Those are my personal 3 favorites. If I could find one that marries the UI of ZPlayer, with the features of PowerAmp and streaming capabilities of Google Music, it would be perfect.
Thanks,
Very informative. I loved Google Music, but with Tmobile throttling, not feasable. Is there a hack to get around the throttling?

Look for a thread in the General section. Use Throttling for a search. You will find it Read the thread and specifically go here.

This was referenced in the thread and goes into more detail.
I don't know how long this is going to work, but I have tested this myself and it does indeed keep yopu separated from T-Mobiles grasp on your data usage. I have the feeling this won't last long, based on too many people talking in the open.
EDIT..many of the Roms are also including hacks that help the throttling issue, but not like this which all together bypasses the counting.
For me it's really a two way tie. Poweramp and miui music.
hiki player > everything else
