Thanks, is it the latest version with the latest updates?

It's Android 2.2 with Sense 2.0. But do not upgrade, otherwise it will be harder with rooting later. And press the thanks button, its faster than type "thanks".

If it isn't rooted, then your warranty should be intact, so why don't you send it to HTC Care? They should fix it in no time

Your carrier should provide you a replacement. If you want to fix it yourself, root and follow the guide, but if it turns out to be a hardware fault, you will have to pay for repairs, cause your warranty will be gone when you root it.

You can not root on-device with HBOOT >= 0.7x. And yes, I am ninety nine ****ing percent sure it's NOT usb-brick.

So?

So you could get it repaired at HTC Care in less time you spent trying not to.

If you HAD root before usb bricked, panicked and went back to stock, there is a chance to solve this without servicing the phone.
Just browse my threads, there is a one starting with "Any chance...". I can't seem to grasp how to link with this app
However if usb stopped working on an unrooted stock rom, chances are this is not an usb brick, and you will need to service the phone anyway.
Just be careful, read everything before attempting, and mind that there are different Desire models.
Good luck

Well there is no ready solution, but you can get temp root access without any problems, and hboot has nothing to do with that (just the Linux kernel version).
Contrary to popular belief the exploit needed to get root access just relies on enabled usb debug and not actually having the phone connected to a pc via usb.

Which tutorial did you read? Try the noob one. Flashing custom ROM and custom kernel will help you play games smoothly even without overclocking. Once you have successfuly unlock bootloader and install custom recovery, you can freely install custom ROM which is extremely fun

[Q] Rom?!

Sorry but ive got a pretty nooby question. If you want a rom like the Viper rom, Do you need to root youre device to use that ROM?
Yes. There is no way to flash a rom without unlocking the bootloader rooting the phone and on most devices flashing a custom recovery.

Welcome to XDA devs. You'll find that most of the development forums have "sticky" posts at the top that will explain not only the rules (you'll see one applies to you already) and standards, but also some helpful "noob" guides to get you started.
From your initial question (and follow-ups) it appears you're brand new to android. That's cool, we all were once. Do yourself a favor and do about an hour of reading--straight reading--before asking any more questions. This is not an insult, it will be much faster than asking, waiting for a response, then asking another question ad infinitum.
Finally, specifically to your question: most of what happens here on XDA devs requires unlocking your bootloader and rooting; if you're not comfortable with doing that, this probably won't be the best forum to you. Again, no offense intended. Your fears are well-founded: you could break your phone if you don't understand what you're doing. That said, I'm pretty much computer illiterate, but have had a great deal of success around here by just reading, reading, reading.... and then following directions in the posts (and there's many posts in which people give fantastic step-by-step directions.
So good luck, search the forums, read the forums, and ask questions once you've tried something and it's not working the way you expected. And have fun!

They're right, you don't need to root to flash a ROM. In fact, most if not all custom ROMs are pre-rooted. I'm suggesting you read first to understand what "root" really means; once you have the basics down, the idea of messing with your phone won't seem nearly as frightening.
BTW- another thing about XDA: click the "thanks" button in addition to saying thanks in your comment.
I ported one Viper rom. It was very laggy due to the overclock default of the rom with Screen off, and bulkyness in size.
You DONT need to root your device to use a rom, but you NEED to unlock the bootloader.
There goes your loophole.
So i have to unlock bootloader and recovery and thats it?

[Q] Could really use a backup file of the stock HTC One V phone (as in HTC Sense)

Well, my phone is pretty much messed up and the whole situation is too frustrating for me to even want to think about it anyone. If someone could attach a backup file of their own stock rom that they originally had when they got their HTC One V it would be really helpful. All I want is to return my phone to what it once was but I was too dumb and never made a backup.
EDIT: Also, my phone is GSM if that means anything.
When I jacked my phone up I just downloaded the proper ruu for my carrier and reflashed it that way. There are a few threads on here that has ablink to the ruu download site
Sent from my HTC One V using xda app-developers app
Sorry, I'm a total noob. :c You could say I was lucky to have even put new rom on my phone. Could you link me the site? I might be able to figure out the rest after that.
Ah, wait. Sorry for the double post but I remember coming across this RUU stuff when I was trying to get it back to what it was. The problem with this was there wasn't a Bell RUU (Canadian company). Is there a Bell RUU out there somewhere?
I'll do some digging around and see if I can find the bell gsm ruu. If I find it ill post link

Take a backup of your apps using Carbon (Playstore) it should work on non-rooted phones, and then factory reset your phone from bootloader...
If i factory reset my phone will i loose my photos and music ?

photos and music are stored in sdcard, which isn't wiped. therefore you won't lose them
Before you do ANYTHING try to update to newest playstore (its 4.10 i think, go google)
I had some slowdowns also because there was this GPS/Maps/Hangouts bug which came when Hangouts came.
It was giving some Maps/gps errors and crashes and seemed to get phone jerky at times.
Since i updated playstore i have no more errors and everything is back to normal
I'm having a pretty similar problem. My HOX gets extremly slow whenever I do more than one thing on the phone, like for example listening to music and writing messages on Whatsapp. A normal reboot doesn't really help, the only thing that helps for about a day is cleaning the cache, but i don't want to do that everyday. Is there any known problem that causes such performance problems?
Sometimes my HD2 running Android 4.2.2 is even faster in everyday ussage than my HOX. lol
A factory reset is required, it will help trust me
