Thumb Keyboard for me. I've had it since my Nook Color and have enjoyed it on phones, the NC, and now the N7.
Yes I too am using thumb keyboard. It makes a lot of sense especially on these bigger screens. I don't get how people type on an ipad.

I like A.I. type, and swiftkey 3 tablet.
On my XOOM, because of the size, I preferred SwiftKey Tablet and I would use the split key option. I the N7 I like A.I. Type Keyboard. Because its not as wide it works great in both portrait and landscape.

You can split the keyboard on the iPad like the first screenshot above.
Back to the topic, I used to like Swype on the Android phones because I can then type (swipe) with one hand. But on the 5 inch and now 7 inch devices, I'm looking at an alternative. Thanks for the screenshots above I'll try out the thumb keyboard.
How does SwiftKey 3 Tablet differ from SwiftKey 3? I have SK3 on my N7 and I can't say that the typing experience is very good, but I love it on my GN.
Both versions of swiftkey are buggy on the nexus 7. For whatever reason touch responsiveness differs when using them to the point where one has to be extra careful while typing making it less efficient than on phones. The worst part is when trying to type in a Google search field in chrome and swiftkey and Google's auto fill seem to engage in a fierce battle of predictions leaving you wanting to throw the damn tablet against a wall. Backspace inputs become a fruitless exercise eventually leading to you just starting all over again.
I really like swiftkey on my HTC one x, so hopefully they will sort these things out on the nexus 7.

I bought SwiftKey tablet with the$25 I got from the play store.
Surprisingly, I like the Swype Beta that I am running. I was assuming that I would not like it on the bigger format, but it works well for me.
Sk3 tablet is definitely crap currently. Really wish the stock jb keyboard had long press alt keys/numbers.
I am using Smart Keyboard Pro and I like it quite a bit, they have a trail version so you can try it out. Dont forget to go trough the settings as the defaults are not the greatest if you ask me. After playing with it for ~10 min I have it exactly the way it want it.
Is there a way to hide the period button in thumbs keyboard because I keep pressing into it. Even if I press 1cm onto the space bar from the period it still hits the period.

Agreed 100%. Been using SwiftKey phone version. I do most of my typing in portrait anyway. Since I've already forked out for this version, I decided to go with it since it's compatible. The Google auto fill issue seems to happen on my S3 as well. Hoping SwiftKey gets this worked out...

They have a free version and the split keyboard does look tasty. I will try it out tonight (I use my N7 for texting during the day and use a logitech BT keyboard so I won't really dig into it until tonight.
Anyone else have experience with this app?

hey guys... i though this would be fun.... to have a competition using your favorite keyboard to see how fast you can get (measured in Words per Minute) in free-form (typing whatever comes to mind, not a set paragraph where you have to take your eyes off of the keyboard and then look back at it).
so click here and see how fast you can get... please be sure to post your results!!! (along with which keyboard you are using)
instructions from the site: "Begin typing in the box to start the test. The test will run for 60 seconds. Do not stop until you see the box turn red."
i was only able to get around 40 wpm so far with swiftkey (two handed)... but i'm sure i can improve that somewhat.
I did 57 wpm using stock JB keyboard and 62 wpm using Swype. I think I could have done better with Swype if could think of words to type faster lol
I got 71 using SwiftKey 3. A few mistakes here and there.

I always argue with people cause I think that on screen software keyboards are a million times faster than the physical hardware keyboards like old school BlackBerry. I recom I can have a full sentence completed by the time a physical keyboard user could begins the 3rd word. Anyone an old blackberry user able to chime in? How many WPM could a hardware keyboard user reach on this test.

Too bad these keyboards only come in american variant, I'd prefer slovenian layout, but that is never going to happen.

Well, these are just physical keys mapped to your virtual keyboard, right? So if you are using different virtual keyboard on your Nexus 7 with Slovenian characters/layout, wouldn't that just be transparent? Unless if I misunderstood you?
Interesting keyboard. Nice photos.
I think the big question is how the keys map to the nexus, both the soft keyboard and special functions. The best thing for me is its size and ability to easily take with my nexus 7. I am concerned the keys might be cramped together. Interesting because its layout is based on Apple bluetooth keyboard.
Logitech has the K810 that is *compatible* with Android, Windows 8/RT, iPad (2,3,4,etc) but has a windows style layout. It has the advantage of back light but disadvantage of being an inch thick. It is much wider than Anker giving more room to spread out the keys, but much harder to carry on the road with the nexus 7.
The Anker is inexpensive on Amazon, and hopefully it is robust - e.g. keys work on touch, correct keys typed as pressed, etc.
Can people post more results and experiences after using it for a couple weeks?
Wow, it looks amazing, so thin! Very tempting
Can you connect via USB otg? Or is that mini slot only for charging?

You are correct, I can set slovene layout and it would work, but I think that Slovene layout on android isn't equal to Slovene layout on PC, special characters are mapped differently, like @ sign for example. Maybe something changed in 4.2.2, I need to check again.

This keyboard is really good. It is very small while still fully usable for typing. I think one reason is the key pad action, texture is excellent The aluminum back is great, too. Unobtrusive to carry with my Nexus 7 tablet.
Anker® Ultra-Slim Highly-Portable Bluetooth 3.0 Keyboard for iPad 2 / 3 / 4 - Silver Aluminum Body
But, there are some cons for Nexus 7.
1) The pairing is sometimes broken, sometimes after waiting 10 seconds pairing succeeds. I found two workarounds if broken. Unsure yet what sequence prompts either case.
a) Un-pair the keyboard from the bluetooth paired device list. Re-pair and type in the newly generated random number. Normal pairing prompts for a large number (7-8 digits) randomly generated by the keyboard, that you type on the keyboard.
b) On the Nexus 7 search for devices, the Nexus 7 prompts for a key (eg 0000,1234). If this happens type 1234 on the Nexus 7 *and* subsequently 1234 (+ enter) on the keyboard.
2) The special keys are for iPad 2/3/4 and *not* for Nexus 7. The Fn-Home,Fn-PgUp,Fn-PgDown,Fn-End do not work. The brightness controls do not work. The volume and music controls do not work. The lock key, home key, tab key does work. The search key only appears to work because at Android Home screen if you start typing the search screen automatically appears, you can type search key or any other letter.
I mention the special key issues on Nexus 7 because the Logitech K810 is fully compatible with the Nexus 7 and every special key works. And, the K810 is also compatible with iPad 2/3/4. The Logitech K810 is a full size keyboard the same size as Apple's bluetooth keyboard.
In summary the Anker keyboard is great for normal typing and extremely portable. But, if Anker releases an Android version with special key support it would be worth replacing the iPad version.
Very nice one!

I believe that is an Active case with Multi-Purpose Cover by Seidio.
Someone please confirm. Thanks.
That's a solid looking case, might have to get one too.
Using a non-stock ROM, I really miss one-handed slide/swipe/swype/trace input.
SlideIt can do one-handed input, and it's what I'm using now. But it's just simply not as good as the Samsung one handed keyboard or Swype.
I remember that an old Galaxy Tab came with a version of Swype that could flip over to the side of the screen. That would be ideal for the Note 2, IMO. Unfortunately, I can't find a working link to that version anywhere. Any ideas?

The lack of a decent swipe-style keyboard on the Note 2 is the one thing that may actually push me to a new phone.
SlideIt just isn't as accurate, and I can't find the Samsung one-handed swipe-enabled keyboard for non-stock ROMs. I actually managed to get Swype from a tablet running on the Note 2, and while it can sort-of do one-handed input, it doesn't scale appropriately, and actually gets a bit too small.

The lack of a decent SWYPE keyboard on the GN2??? Huh. I was using the beta Swype, but went ahead & bought the paid version. Which in my opinion is far superior than the beta. Better predictions, faster input, etc. Glad I got the newest version!! What's a dollar? 4 quarters that's it....

I guess I'm guilty of having small hands then....
Not a female, and to be honest, I've never thought of my thumbs as any smaller than normal thumbs, but I certainly can't thumb type on a full width keyboard while holding the phone one-handed. My apologies.
I've paid the $1 for Swype, and the $ whatever SlideIt cost, and the $ whatever about five other keyboards have cost over the years. I have no issue paying for keyboards. I just seem to have an issue finding one -handed slide style keyboards that are decent.

I guess if you take notes a lot it's really useful, but for me, I just find it a "cool" feature of the phone. And if I ever need to take notes, then I have it with me.
Come Christmas time I'm really gonna enjoy having the s pen when I'm shopping for xmas gifts. I also use it for better photoshopping. I don't think I would've bought it of it didn't have an s pen and wish that some of the other 5 inch phones had it. Its not necessary but good to have when you need it.

LG G2 would be just as good of a choice with its beautiful 5.2" screen and more manageable size.

I really dont see how people think that the G2 is even somewhat comparable to this phone (I'm not flaming you, I just really hate the G2). I tried the phone in the tmobile store and I just couldn't get past LG's custom UI. It looks like its from the 90's. Now if CM gets official for that phone, then I might really consider it. But for now, this picture looks so bad to me, I don't think that I would ever buy a LG phone unless its a Nexus.

In his thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2526070, BarryH nails the problem as a fight between the internal and external keyboards. His solution worked for me.
I don't think it matters which keyboard you have, as long as the internal keyboard is disabled while the Bluetooth is connected.

Im actually using a usb otg keyboard case for generic 10 inch tablets. Works well. I can set the tablet inside like a stand and plug up with my Logitech wireless mac touchpad and basically use the thing like a laptop. Much more stable than bluetooth even if you don't have that glitch (I dont) Use external keyboard helper pro to map special functions to the keys. Mine is set so I can control brightness, sound, and open several applications all from the keyboard. VERY NICE!!

I like the azio one better, because the dimensions look like they fit better with the note. (i.e., they are approximately the same width at about 9.5"). I have one of the Logitech keyboards that have the pop-up stand (http://www.logitech.com/en-us/product/tablet-keyboard-ipad), and while the keyboard is much more sturdy and the build quality is excellent, it drives me up the wall that the keyboard is wider than the tablet, which makes it not as portable as I would like.
(For what it's worth, the Azio can be found on Amazon for about $32).
I use my Motorola Bluetooth Keyboard, which I bought for the Motorola Xoom a couple of years ago ... works like a charm ...

There was an announcement in November about an ASUS keyboard called the TransKeyboard, but no info on release date or price. Anyone have any info on this? Looks like it may be nice, built for android (and windows) with cover and stand.
I had a Transformer TF700T tablet and wasn't thrilled with that keyboard so I won't be buying another.

I just ordered a keyboard from Anker for 20€, which could be unique, as it uses two AAA batteries (about 2000mAh) instead of the typical sub-300mAh lithium battery. Will tell whether it works, when it arrives.

How is the case? Ive been eyeing this keyboard but not sure how I will like toating around a keyboard for classes and not having it built into the base. I keep going back to the Poetic removable keyboard case.
Its actually well built and the keyboard feels great. The case has a faux leather feel and the sliding stand is plastic. Decent viewing angle. It has some useful Android specific keys on there which help u navigate around. It's responsive, to the point where it doesnt lag behind while typing, but that point where u initially start typing, it takes 2 seconds to realize which keyboard ur typing with, internal or external

I've just sent off for this keyboard from ebay.
A little pricey at almost £50 but wanted a decent backlit keyboard & the size looks ideal.

The Anker Ultra Slim BT has anchored. I thought it were smaller, bu it has a fullsize layout, notebook-like look and feel. Would work flawlessly, if the Samsung keyboard would not kick Swiftkey, once the Anker is detected. I later have to restore Swiftkey as default kb. On my old tablet (with CM11) Swiftkey runs the external kb.
Im using the HP BT Keyboard... cheap and works flawless.... never disconnects....
