TouchWiz apps on AOSP builds (camera and s-beam, specifically) - Galaxy S III Themes and Apps (US Carriers)

I know that the full touchwiz suite requires the touchwiz frameworks, and may be unfeasible (or even pointless, since you could just use a debloated stock) to port to AOKP/CM9, but the two most useful to me would be the camera and s-beam. the gestures i can do without, since they're just a slightly different way to do something you can do otherwise. i know that on some older phones, there have been porting efforts to move cameras and other things to aosp roms, and i was wondering how much effort it might take to port the sgs3 camera and s-beam. anyone looked in to it, or is there already a thread on another forum i missed somewhere?

No.

Those are the 2 things I miss from touchwiz, I love cm10 but wish the camera had a burst mode.

edit: ...

Def would like to have the normal camera its way better then the aokp one
SAMSUNG GALAXY SIII

What about SmartStay and the motion gestures, any way to bring those over, or does an equivalent have to be written from the ground up?

Until our Devs start working on AOSP builds from source, there won't be much luck here. But I'm not going to doubt the possibility that our Devs will get the jobs done.

Can someone explain cyanogenmod

What is the point of using cyanogenmod over stock? I've tried researching for a answer and nothing comes up. Does anyone care to explain what all the hype about cyanogenmod and using it over stock + root
Like per say if it improves overall proformence of the s3 on a battery and stability basis then ill be sold to give it a try

Hmm well the major benefit is getting to use AOSP. Which is stock android as google intended (ie like the galaxy nexus), none of the samsung touchwiz stuff. Other benefit for now being that its jellybean. Im sure people here can come up with a laundry list of reasons for why cm is better than stock but those are the two main that would probably come into anyones head.
its straight build from the android source, no touchwiz sense etc.. a google experience lol
Those and a whack of in-built customization at your disposal

For the sheer thrill of it. Because you can. To experiment and learn. I allot of times don't need to know nothing about an OS to at least try it. People waste hundreds of man hours to create this stuff. Try it out. See what they spent all their time to create. Happy hacking!

Reasons I use any ROM over stock (features vary ROM to ROM)
Change songs with Volume rocker
Built in WiFi tethering
No Bloatware
There are other things I look for in a ROM but unfortunately CM does not include any of those (e.g. app password lock built into system and cannot be removed)

Plus Cyanogen you can customize it more than stock, just little things, like navigation bar, which I don't use, just an example.

My story, I had the original Galaxy S Captivate from AT&T and as my contract was close to running out I decided to finally put a custom ROM on my phone since it was slow getting updated. After a while I ended up with CM. It was a huge improvement over the old stock rom (even with the updates they had managed to get out). Fast forward to this weekend I finally bit the bullet and decided to upgrade to a new phone so I got an S3. My first thought upon turning on the phone was "omg this is terrible!".
Samsung's touch wiz basically is where they take the newest versions of Android and try to force it to work like the older version (presumably so that all their phones work the same). So the first thing I did on getting home is spend time getting CM installed on it and I haven't looked back. You lose some of the Samsung apps but most of them are useless anyway but you gain a better experience.

New Rom Ideas

I have been battling back and forth between touchwiz roms and AOSP roms. . So if any developers are looking for a new rom to make, here is my idea (yes, i know it is not a new idea and has been done on many devices). What i would like to have is the stabilty and battery life of a UVDLJA rom including touchwiz launcher, with AOSP lockscreen, inverted AOSP contacts and messenger.I don't know if its possible, but could there be options for this using aroma in the touchwiz roms?
Something I saw while working in the s2 board with my wife's phone was a rom with a touchwhiz base and the aokp rom control features added, I personally would love something like that
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
TL;DR... I agree on the new rom idea lol. And I *****ed and moaned about the roms we have all in relativity are too damn close to each other. But I still respect their hard work, and praise them all as they are doing things I wish I could do.
I wish I had the knowledge and computer strong enough to do this kinda work, I would've had the rom up and running so long ago lol... I used my phone to get most of it working. building sounds and apps into a rom little things here and there just started to break I gave up.
This would be my ultimate DD never have to flash a rom again. I absolutely despise the "nature" that Samsung built in to this phone.
We have about 3 sounds mods everyone focuses on, some cameras and Keyboards people build into the rom, some awesome themes I'm extremely happy with. I would really like a TW rom with all AOSP sounds instead of the water drops and stuff. Camera from TW, LockScreen from AOSP, Notification and Status bar options from AOKP, 4.2 little things here and there as options.
Know I mean no disrespect and I do appreciate what our guys do in the Dev section.
I miss the devs that worked on those kinda things. We have great guys here (I might get [email protected] for this one) but in general they all seem to be adding the same things; Acid, Beats, Walkman music, removing other Samsung Apps while others keep them. They all leave bloat like LTETest, and LTEsettings in the /system/app folder. I could keep going and going. Know I mean no disrespect and I do appreciate them again. But where are the old roms like we used to get (mentioned above) we had some great stuff in the G2X also. We had roms that had custom lockscreens to launchers and all sorts of neat things I would've never expected. Maybe it's time I stop helping the stupids and save up and get a new computer with the power to build roms as well. (I won't release them to people though lol)
i know the exactly what you guys need

I am in the process of developing a ROM. Nothing solid yet. I really do agree with keeping the stability and features of stock with some aosp features. At least for me I'll be a start with dev work. I have a Mac so I've already downloaded xcode and working and following dxsidia as guide. It'll take me a while since I work 10 hour shifts at the hospital and also do some website dev on the side.

I'm glad to see people wanting to work on this. I believe it will make a great DD. It seems I'm one of the few that really like the touchwiz launcher and Widgets, but I ask you to please include that in the rom. People can easily download the other launchers from the market.
I agree, anything that is downloadable from the market should stay there. It's great that you can include something in a rom, but so can simply pressing the install button. Any thing that is already a flashable .zip (like beats) or (acId sounds mod) should stay as a flashable .zip. Just my opinion.
In the ATT galaxy S3 forums, there is a rom called nexusmod reloaded that is close to what I am referring to. Its based on ics and I don't think it has inverted apps that we like.

dude, you totally can.
easiest way, though, would be to disable your lockscreen and try out widget locker or something like that.
as far as the inverted apps go, i would hit up some of the guys in the themes and apps section. wouldn't take very long to whip something like that up... hell, even the lockscreen wouldn't take very long to modify.
why CM chooses to build from the source of another device is beyond me. it would be much easier to customize the layout/UI, parameters, and make it functional with the firmware meant for this thing, and you would keep all the functionality of TW.
anyways, yeah.
There is this great divide feeling as I've been playing with my new S3, and it really brings homage to the Linux scene (compare: xfce vs kde vs gnome, etc.).
Though I've settled on TouchWiz for now, there are some things I wish were an option and not "just the way it is".
I finally got kitchen working on my Mac. Got a base up and will hopefully be able to post it later. This is my plan since we be seen this throughout. People want stability of stock and those who love tw features will love this. I will be implementing aroma installer later when I get that injected. I've only built a ROM before for myself but never posted it. It'll be theme free and since it'll be stock most stock themes should work. I basically want people to do the work on their own. If they want to add volume mods like beats , they should flash it on their own . This is an experiment to get my foot out there and I'd love the support. Any name suggestions. ??

[Bounty] TouchWiz camera apk on CM10/AOSP/AOKP

I've seen posts like this for various projects of other devices so I figured I would give it a shot here.
If someone can get the Touchwiz camera apk (with the necessary touchwiz framework files) working on CM10 or AOSP, I will give them $20. The camera apk is literally the one thing preventing me from switching to CM10 or other AOSP/AOKP roms.
Everyone else is free to pitch in as well. Together, perhaps we can raise a worthwile & tempting bounty to encourage a skilled developer to get this working. If no one can do it, then we're not losing any money. If someone can pull it off, then it will be worth every penny. The Galaxy S II camera was ported to AOSP on the Fascinate so I believe this could be possible with the GS3.
Current bounty: $20.00
How about multi-view on CM 10/AOKP?

Put me down for another 20 US dollars, the stock Samsung camera is why I always go back to a TW ROM, but I would love to use AOKP.
Its probably possible to do but very very difficult as it needs tw framework. As anything is possible on android put me down for $20 as well. Stock cm/aokp camera is good and could never steer me away from cm/aokp roms but sammy cam would be an awesome addition!

No, its not possible yet. It has to be somehow written into the framework and nobody has created anything yet. There probably wont be unless Cyanogenmod, AOKP or ParanoidAndroid decide to incorporate the feature into there roms.
So unless Google decides to have multi windows in Nexus ,aosp will not get it..

I highly doubt Google will ever even consider adding it to AOSP but it is very more likely for Cyanogenmod or AOKP to consider adding some variation of it to there roms, unless of course Samsung has some kind of bs licensing garbage or something like that on it.
Paranoid Android is supposedly going to add they're own version of multi-window named Halo soon, but looks nothing like the TW version. Closest thing to having in an AOSP ROM as of yet.

Halo is not multi window, it's a notification system. Different idea and concept.
Sent from my T-Mobile Galaxy S3
CyanogenMod wanted to include cornerstone, a multiwindow mod, into CM9. Steve even had screenshots of it integrated and running here.
However, the Android team warned against it, stating that they want to give their app developers a consistent environment to test and run their apps.
Okay, let me please please beg you not to do this. I can guarantee you this introduces all kinds of application compatibility issues. We work really hard to give our developers a consistent environment where their apps will operate correctly across all the devices Market runs on, not being impacted by negative reviews from bad devices that they should not have to deal specially with.
If you start making your own distributions of Android behaving in such fundamentally different ways, I suspect we are going to need to start doing things to prevent you from impacting our app ecosystem. I'm not sure what, but I could imagine things such as restricting how users can interact with Market apps on these devices (not allowing reviews or such).
We have let a lot of things in this area slide -- for example to be allowed to include Market on your device you are supposed to fully pass CTS. However, if you start really diverging from the core Android platform (I would argue this takes you well into the realm of a fork rather than a customization) then some deep issues are going to come up about how we handle these custom builds.
We have been putting a lot of thought and work for a number of years into how to let Android applications run on increasingly diverse and dynamic screens. Doing this correctly, without impacting our app developers in a negative way, is a really challenging problem. I also think it is something that needs to be done at the mainline platform level, not as a customization, because doing it right is going to require new well defined interfaces with applications for them to interact with it, possibly starting with just a facility they need to use to opt in to it.
