Bricked KF? - Kindle Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was attempting to install Jelly Bean onto my Kindle Fire (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1765288). My steps:
1. Rooted device through ADB (BurritoRoot)
2. Install TWRP (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1407249)
3. Once inside the recovery mode on the Kindle Fire and reset dalvik cache and flashed Jelly Bean (link above)
4. Turned off device
5. Turned on device and the Kindle Fire logo appears for 3-4 seconds and disappears. The backlight turns off and back on, a white screen flashes, and 1-2 seconds later the back light turns back off.
6. In order to turn it back on I must hold the power button for 15-20 seconds. Let go, and then click the power button again.
Did I miss a step causing my KF to brick? Is there something I can do to fix it?

Your not bricked when you see the blue kindle fire logo you need to hit the power button 2 times to boot back into twrp from there verify md5 of the jelly bean ROM if it is wrong redownload if it is correct reflash after wiping everything caches, factory reset wipe, system, and data

Well it's not a blue kindle fire logo, it is the stock Kindle Fire logo. Regardless, I tried what you said, no luck..

If you have no yellow triangle or no white kindle with blue fire then you have no way to acess recovery .... I may be able to assist via teamviewer in a hour and a half to fix that but likely it will require a factory cable to do so if we can not get it into fastboot

I won't be here later tonight, so I'll just get a factory cable soon. That will allow me to boot into fastboot and then what?

No you don't need a factory cable to go into fastboot.

In my scenario it sure seems like it. When I bott the Kindle Fire shows for 1-3 seconds, then goes away, a white screen flashes and the device is turned off. What will the cable allow me to do? What can I do in my situation?

Seriously not to hurt your feelings but the less you do the better let someone assist you on getting a bootloader on that thing before you have a real like permanent brick

If you think it's possible to get it working without the special cable, then I would be fine with someone assisting me with a bootloader installation. There are no signs of the Kindle Fire connecting to the computer (via USB) so I don't know how it would be possible.

actually if it boots to the system at all I have an extremely easy fix using an older form of smirkis scripts

That'd would be great if you could help me out with it. Teamviewer? I've never used it, but should I get it in order for you to help me?

I'm not trying to hi-jack the OP's thread, I just felt that it was appropriate to post here since I am having the same problem.
Similar to funkystudios, I wanted to put Jelly Bean on my KF, so I:
- downloaded the KFU
- rooted the device
- installed TWRP
- installed FFF
- couldn't boot into TWRP from the menu, so I used KFU to re-install TWRP
- cleared cache\dalvik cache
- installed hashcode's JB ROM
When booting:
- Kinde Fire logo [blue]
- Kindle Fire logo [yellow]
- black screen - no power led
My thought process is that either FFF or the JB ROM had a problem installing. I never have once seen the yellow triangle with the flame since this process.
Once I get the black screen, I am able to connect my KF and access 'adb shell'. I think the permissions on the device might be hosed though. When I run 'adb devices' it is displaying as '0123456789ABCDEF device'. If I try to run 'ls -la' on /data I am getting "opendir failed, Permission denied"
I want to try and get to fastboot to continue troubleshooting, but I don't think I'm going to be able to if I can't access /data on the device....because in my understanding, you have to run:
adb wait-for-device
adb push files\fbmode /data/local/fbmode
adb shell chmod 755 /data/local/fbmode
adb shell /data/local/fbmode
adb reboot
I know this post was large, just trying to be as informative as possible to help those who are willing to help funkystudios and I......

Thepooch,
Thank you for your response. Unfortunately, I am unable to get into recovery from the boot menu, when I try it says "booting", then it looks like it reboots, then it goes back to the black screen.
From here I can still access adb, and I'm unable to use the KFU even though it says ONLINE - 4000.....
I appreciate your continued assistance.

Possibly because you did not do a complete wipe and also because you did not install the FireFireFire bootloader.

[Q] Kindle Fire stuck at TWRP

So I formatted my rooted kindle fire with twrp installed, now whenever I boot I go straight to the TWRP menu, why can/t I boot into a fresh stock ROM?
i assume you told it to boot to recovery (in cm7)
you can use kfu option 1 - bootmode normal
or manually:
adb shell idme bootmode 4000
adb reboot

I'm having the same problem, I went into KFU and set option 1 and it shows this
***********************************************
* Activating Normal (4000) *
***********************************************
but doesnt go any further
When trying to install a ROM it says....
E:Cannot load volume /misc!......but it's right after it says that the ROM was installed
where do I insert the command for adb...........for KFU it is reading the Kindle Fire but for some reason when trying to set option 1 it doesn't go further.
It might be good to know that I deleted alot on the Fire in Windows explorer before this happened. Right now on my Kindle fire my
folders are Android, .android_secure, LOST.DIR and TWRP
files are fix_permissions, 3 ROMS, lol- Databasefile, and .config_c38
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated

Typing this:
adb shell idme bootmode 4000
adb reboot
In ADB should fix both of y'alls problems

ok that worked great. But any idea why this is happening and how to avoid it from happening in the future?
I'm having the same problem, with "activating normal" stuck.
I also cannot input the command input adb shell idme bootmode 4000 or adb shell in command prompt.

it's a good practice to move kfu to c:\ and rename it to "kfu"
now open a (elevated) command prompt and cd to c:\kfu\tools
now the adb command should work ...

I am having the same problem here is exactly what i did
rooted
installed android market
installed twrp
made backup in twrp
flashed ics
wasnt happy with the performance of some apps on ics and there were quite a lot of stalls and complete freezes so i used the backup i made in twrp to restore back to original kf rom
most of my apps wouldnt worked and asked me to reinstall them through the kf market. i was unable to access the kf market or the android market as it said there was no connection and to retry even though i could access my email through mail and the internet through browser no problem.
then i decided to do a factory reset through kf rom settings and now twrp starts automatically anytime i try to turn on the kf. i tried to do the recovery again with the backup but the restore factory settings had obviously deleted it along with everything else on the sd card.
has anyone any ideas on how i can get back to the stock kf rom? I am happy with stock kf until hardware acceleration works with ics
thanks in advance

You need to flash a new ROM. If you need to go back to Amazon stock ROM, then you need to download and flash it. Please note FFF and TWRP will be over written by the stock ROM.

I just tried to do this. i mounted the kf and moved the stock rom .zip file to the kf. when i mounted it however instead of seeing the usual list of files and folders and selecting the cdcard folder i could only see the twrp folder and nothing else. when I am in twrp i can see the other folders but not when it is mounted to the computer.
i tried anyway and there were numerous errors in the process that i didnt have time to write down
now when i start up the kindle fire it stops on the kindle fire logo screen
any ideas?
It looks like the KF is booting into fast boot mode.
You may use kfu to change the mode to normal or issues the following adb commands
fastboot -i 0x1949 oem idme bootmode 4000
or
fastboot oem idme bootmode 4000
then fastboot reboot
If the KF boots to recovery mode i.e. twrp then mount the sdcard and flash the desired ROM.

I have been working on this for over four hours. I have done absolutely everything that is said to do.
Heres my symptoms:
Turn Kindle Fire on and i get the yellow triangle, after a few seconds I get the curtain that says "teamwin" then it just opens TWRP. I cannot get it to boot normally.
I have SDK and ADB. This is the last screen I got from ADB.
C:\Users\Jeff\Desktop\android-sdk\platform-tools>fastboot -i 0x1949 oem idme boo
tmode 4000
< waiting for device >
When I try to do it thru KFU:
ADB Status: Offline
Boot Status: Unkown
I tried hitting 1 then 1 again and all I get is <waiting for device>
The Kindle is just sitting here with the TWRP screen on and I have no idea how to get around it.

Fastboot only works in fastboot mode (4002). When you are in recovery or booted into an OS, you have to use adb to reset the bootmode. To get back to normal...
Code:
adb shell idme bootmode 4000
As a side note, the "-i 0x1949" should be dropped when you are using the FIREFIREFIRE bootloader (yellow triangle boot logo). The "-i 0x1949" is only necessary in the stock bootloader (kindle fire boot logo).

[Q] i am stuck in a dark place with my kindle fire

i watched the video when i signed up so i really dont want to spam or anything like that but i am not too sure what exactly my problem is and if there are posts on it so i am going to ask for help.
i rooted my kindle fire and all was going well when i installed CM7 energy and my brother (i am not sure of what eexactly he did) he turned it off or something and then my android wouldnt boot, so i sorted this problem out and got it back to the factory default settings. then i put CM7 energy back onto my KF and now it comes up with the kindle fire logo, then goes into the CM7 energy launching icon and thats as far as it will go. i cannot connect it up to kindle fire utility, it cant see it. i tried giving it the fastboot commands and went through various methords for that. my computer doesnt even see it untill it starts trying to launch CM7 energy. could someone please help me?
Can you get into TWRP Recovery and clear the dalvik cache?
sadly i cant, it seems to have dissapeared when i tried to flash the new Rom
When you turn your Kindle on, what does the boot logo look like?
Should make a list of the ten most common mistakes 1. Should be using a recovery without the understanding of how to access it again.
OK I have an update to this issue. I reinstalled the drivers on my pc manually and now I can see the kindle on the Kf utility. But it can't seem to find any directory when I try any of the options. So if I try and install something it just says cannot find directory
And I never got any warrenty with it because I bought it on my holiday to America

It comes up with the kindle fire logo for a split second and then goes to the Cm7 launch screen with all the multi colour panel looking things turning
is your kindle fire logo come up first white kindle and blue fire? If so push your power button a few times to get a boot menu select recovery this will take you into twrp where you can factory/ data reset wipe cache wipe dalvik wipe system and select the rom you tryed to install swipe to install. might be best to locate this first before doing the wipes just a suggestion. after you flash rom flash gingerbread gapps select reboot then select system boot animation takes a bit be patient should boot to an adroid screen where you can sign into google.
Also if you made a backup you might want to wipe and restore that before moving on instead of reflashing
No white kindle or blue fire you can always try sending fff you must be connected to the internet to do so.

There should be some dialogue about fetching files if not kfu is probably useless to you at this point your drivers in devices manager should say andoid composite adb interface as well.

So the KF Utility see your device, then run it to change your bootmode to recovery(5001) then install the newest version of FFF 1.4A.
From there do a factory reset then wipe Dalvik and system cache just as Thepooch stated. Then try re-installing your rom and stuff.
Use KFU to change your bootmode to recovery (5001) and reboot.
Once you're in recovery, use the mount function to mount your sdcard as USB storage and transfer FFF 1.4a to the device. Then use TWRP to install it. With FFF1.4, you can use the power button to easily access recovery and flash a new rom.
It sounds like your brother hit factory reset in TWRP and wiped out the system leaving the device nothing to boot to, hence the black (backlit) screen.
You could use KFU to install FFF, but it is ill advised. A small mistake in flashing a bootloader seriously brick your device to a state that would require pulling the back cover off.

Sorry if I'm wrong, but I looked it up and that's what I found. So you bought it in America? So then I guess you can't return it. BTW Amazon provides a 1 year warranty that you don't have to buy. right i tried to go into the recovery and it told me it couldnt find the directory but the kindle did restart, but never turned on thanks to low battery which im having a little problem with at the moment. i am going to charge it for half an house and turn it back on and try again.
right i have charged it and tried to put it back into recovery, it tells me that it cannot find the drive specified and when it restarts nothing changes its in normal boot

Your helpers are suggesting you use KFU to switch the bootmode on the Kindle Fire to recovery (5001). If you can do that, the KF will (hopefully) reboot into TWRP the next time you restart the device. If you really want to figure out what's going on with your device, you should try using adb (and fastboot) directly instead of going to KFU to do it. Then you'd have a better chance of seeing what's actually happening.
This seems to be a very common problem where the system software has not booted far enough to accept adb commands and the KF cannot be put into fastboot mode. Your KF just might be in this very situation.
I suggest you take some time to read...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1552547
so you have a better idea of what the posters in this thread are saying.
If you cannot get the device to boot TWRP or enable fastboot mode, you'll want to get a factory cable.
big update to this issue, i couldnt get it to go into recovery. so i just had a quick ponder and tried to flash the origonal rom using kindle fire unbricker, it then sayed a load of stuff whic is typical but then it said changing offset to 0x something and then the kindle screen changed to the kindle fire logo and stayed there. so i then plugged into into kindle fire utility and i was able to put it into recovery. now i have it in recovery i am going to do everything you all have said and really hoping its going to work.
Thank you everyone who has helped! and it seems to be coming to a happy ending
get yourself a bootloader first and be careful what you just did could wipe out your recovery and your newly installed bootloader thats what flashing stock will do. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1632375 bootloader here.
But heck if it does boot into stock hopefully a working form of it.
problem solved
right after lots of redoing things, updating things testing roms. i can now say that if any body is stuck with the issue i have (e.g. stuck at the logo) they can open kindle unbricker and start the flash update. it should change there kindle to stay in a kindle fire logo screeen when they turn it off and on. from there they should connect it to there PC and open KF utility and install TWR and the kindle should go into that screen. then once there, factory reset and then it should go back to its normal self (before root) then i recomend downloading the new amazon update 6.3 and installing that. then flashing a new rom because this has worked very well and i am currently on AOKP i think its called, milestone 5 and it is amazing, i recomend it. thank you everyone for helping me, i appreciat everysingle comment and you lot are mirrical works for noobs like me!

[Q] Seemingly stuck in bootloop

I used the Kindle FIre Utility that was stickied to install ClockworkMod. Unfortunately, the utility gives an error message when I attempted to root or install FFF or really do anything else. However, I was able to boot into CWM using the utility. I remember from my experience with ROMs on the Samsung Captivate (AT&T) that installing new ROMs would overwrite things like being unrooted or even recovery mode itself. So I downloaded the zip of Alien Droid and flashed it using ClockworkMod. I wiped data and cache and dalvik cache. I then rebooted the device to find it bootlooping on the Alien Droid logo. So I plug it back into the computer, the computer recognizes the ADB interface as "Android." However, Kindle Fire Utility does not recognize the device anymore since it is not known as "kindle" or at least that's what I seemed to gather. So It's stuck bootlooping for now and I'm not sure how to get it out of the boot loop or how to get back to stock. Anybody have any pointers?

The version that came with the Kindle Fire Utility I linked above. I'm not sure what number it is, but it allowed for touch functions and was black with red text.
The only version that comes to kfu anymore is sbloods but I only know it to be gb and ics safe don't know about jelly bean

Also you should have included a factory reset and system wipe to you scheme of wipes all you have is a broken system very likely...
I would say install twrp manually in fastboot (temporary or otherwise)

I did do a factory reset. I accidentally mentioned in the post that I wiped data, but what I meant was factory reset. The kindle still shows up in the computer when I plug it in, so I feel like there is some hope.

No, but how would I use a backup anyway while bootlooping?
EDIT: could I use a backup from another kindle fire using this method?
My thought was to get back into recovery and restore your backup but that's not possible without fff
A backup from another kindle if it was created in cwmr yes I believe this is possible...

Even while bootlooping, you should still be able to issue adb commands, check your drivers. Also, the Alien Droid animation takes a really long time the first time around. How long did you let it sit before shutting it off?

If your bootlooping but still get adb acces before it reboots, you should try the steps in this post...

Then flash whatever rom or erase cache/dalvik-cache/userdata.

This is true. Although I don't know much about how to operate adb, I do have it installed. I waited an hour or two, the animation stops at some point and freezes but the usb connection still works.

I don't currently have TWRP installed on the kindle, just clockworkmod. I will try to install TWRP from adb and see what I can do.
EDIT: While my computer detects the kindle as an "Android ADB Interface" when I type "adb devices" into cmd nothing shows when the kindle is plugged in (but my phone shows when it's plugged in with USB debugging enabled, so I know I have it installed properly at least). I think the proper drivers are not installed.
EDIT 2: I uninstalled the driver for it to install the google usb driver but it failed to install the new one. Now when I plug the Kindle in it shows up as an empty Removable device in Computer butt does not show up anywhere else.

"Android ADB Interface" usually appears in the device manager when the KF is in fastboot mode, but if you are seeing the boot animation from the ROM, it cannot be in fastboot mode. I'm not sure where your KF is in the boot process, so it's important to figure that out first. Take a look at this fastboot guide...

I installed the drivers and now the Kindle is detected by adb when I type adb devices. ADB tells me it is in normal boot mode (4000). However, I cannot switch to ffastboot. It tells me it cannot find the drive specified and that permission is denied.
FFF, assuming you installed it, goes into temporary fastboot for the first few seconds the the bootloader is running. Use that time to do what you need to do in fastboot. When the device detects you are trying to do something in fastboot during this time, it will stop the countdown and stay in fastboot.

Cant mount SD card on kindle fire.

So I was messing with my kindle and it was trying to upgrade it to jelly bean and i guess i missed one of the steps and bricked it. I was going through the process of unbricking but when i was trying to do extract the update.zip folder it would not allow me to because it could not mount the SD card. All i need to figure out how to do is get the SD slot mounted. I am slowly picking up on command prompt and still trying to figure out adb shell but that is all i need help with.
I can unbrick it if someone knows how i can get my kindle to mount back to my computer!
Any advice or step by step for it would be very helpful, Thanks guys
Could you be more specific as to how your Kindle is "bricked"?

Forgive my redundancy but please describe the "boot loop". Does it just sit at the Kindle Fire logo? Does the Kindle Fire logo flash, or change brightness? Does it make it to the boot animation? Black screen?

It will go to the kindle fire logo and then it would go to a black screen. It makes no boot animation. It will change some brightness. The words kindle fire are in white and blue. It flashes where is needs to do the boot animation and then just goes to a black screen

The image shows a very low battery. The behavior you describe suggests a low battery. You're in a boot loop caused by no power.
Let it sit for several hours (better...over night).

It might be a good idea to consider installing TWRP rather than using CWM. CWM is known to have problems with some newer ROMs.

Hey were u able to fix it??
Had the same problem with mine when I used TWRP to format my SD card..but was able to solve it..
What I did was a very simple thing..got the kindle recognised as a drive..used windows partition manager to format it
It worked.. I tx the stock and installed it
Try it and let me know

I have an Idea. If you have fastboot working on your computer. You could try flashing a rom from your computer by typing
fastboot -w(wipes device)
fastboot update <path to rom> (flashes rom)
If it works, you can then fix the sdcard easier with adb/shell/partition manager. Its worth a shot.
I also found this on a website
ROM update without SDcard
If you don't have an sd card, or your slot is broken you can try this trick, but you will need a custom recovery like Clockwork.
Boot up your phone to recovery. And move your rom file to the adb directory, and start a command line ( cmd )
adb shell
mount data
adb push D:\custom_rom.zip /data/
Wait until the push finised, and restart your device to recovery again with "adb reboot-bootloader"
mount data
mount /data /sdcard ( mount the data folder into your sdcard folder, so your recovery will think that you have an sdcard installed )
Locate the ROM .Zip file you wish to flash.
Confirm the flash by following the on-screen instructions (ie: pressing the trackball, pressing the call button, etc.)
If no errors arise during the flashing process then the ROM flash was successful, Reboot the device.
With some root file explorer, remove the rom file if you don't need it anymore, to free up space.
Or use adb to remove the custom recovery
adb shell rm data/custom_rom.zip
I will give it a shot. Only thing is i dont think there is even any software on here. when i try to get it into fastboot mode here is what it says.
Then you need a factory cable to get into fastboot.

When you see the error message:
Code:
- exec '/system/bin/sh' failed: No such file or directory (2)
It means you don't have access to the shell in order to switch bootmodes and access recovery, which is needed to fix this type of problem. The only way to change bootmodes without access to the shell, is in fastboot. Unfortunately, you need access to the shell to change the bootmode to fastboot as well...catch-22.
For this, you need a factory cable. The factory cable will tell the device to boot into fastboot without the need for a shell. Even with a factory cable, and access to recovery, you'll still likely need to either reformat, or repartition your sdcard in order to get it to mount.

Can't mount SD card on kindle fire
I was in a similar situation and after reading the various forums i came across this action "hold down the power button until the kindle goes off and continue to hold for about 30 seconds I believe this resets the kindle and then tick debugging and mount usb storage the sdcard will open on your pc" and then you can go from there. Worked for me so good luck.

I can't seem to access that. To be honest, I can't recall the entire process. How do I boot the device in recovery mode? I have an option to restart on recovery mode, but when I select that option it just reboots and goes back to the main page.

Ok, so I seem to be making progress. I figured out what you mean about ADB and I was able to follow steps from the link you shared all the way to getting the device to reboot on fastboot mode. The device now is displaying the Kindle Fire logo. The problem now is that if I enter the command fastboot -i 0x1949 devices or fastboot -i 0x1949 getvar product I get the message < waiting for device > and nothing happens. The device responded to all other commands but it seems to be stuck somehow. If I now run adb devices it is not listed as part of the devices. I also tried installing the Kindle Fire 1st drivers and it failed. Any thoughts on this?
