I haven't used my tether for a few days now, but I know it was working fine before the last update. I'm rooted and running LG2. Im using wifi tether for root. It starts fine and says it is running, but it's not broadcasting. Even I try to do a manual connection to the SSID it wont connect. I didn't think that last update changed anything with that, but like I said, It worked fine before that.
Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks!
Edit: sorry saw the last sentence saying you were rooted, my bad. Do you plug your phone in when running it? For some reason wifi turns on when you plug the phone in.. And that can mess with tether. I usually plug in, reboot (its fast enough lol) then run tether, which will take over the wifi feed on its own.
Did you have root after the update? If you're rooted, you have to wait for a rooted update to come out on here. Otherwise, an OTA update can mess that up. Not sure if that's the case here but thought you'd like a quick reply..

NP....I am plugged in, but the wifi says it is off. I turned the wifi on and I get the "what the hell" mesage, then I turn it back off and start root again and still get the same results. I will try rebooting the phone and see if that helps. Thanks!
EDIT: Sorry....I meant I start tether again....not root!

OK so the reboot didn't help, but unplugging my phone did. If I start the tether with my phone unplugged it works, but it stops working as soon as I plug it in again. So now how do I fix that? LOL! Thanks for the help though....at least it will work until the battery dies!!

Yeah, something with hooking the charger up is a mess, and it's a bit of trial and error, it might take more than one reboot while hooked up. What you might want to do now, if you're off battery, is turn off tether, plug in the charger, wait like 3 seconds, then re-activate tether to get it to control wifi again?

Try going into settings in WiFi Tether and changing Device Profile to Samsung Galaxy Nexus (CDMA/LTE). Then while still in settings hit menu and (Re)-Install binaries/configs. Worked for me. Only difference is I'm on Verizon but that shouldn't matter. :good:
Any luck, Karma?

I am able to get it to work by jumping through all the unplug/replug disable/reenable hoops......but then the tether just stops running automatically after like 10-15 mins..... I just read about the power save settings so I turned that off and I'm going to try that now and see what happens.
Thx portrub! That is the profile I am using, but I havent tried reloading binaries. I'll give that a shot too!
Thx for all the help guys!
UPDATE: Ugh....no luck. The wifi still shuts off automatically........it's really hard to play D3 while im at work when I keep losing connection!! LOL!!

Hey any luck Karma? I have the same issue...its driving me crazy..it just drops the connection after 10-15 minutes and i have to manually restart constantly.
Try bluetooth tether instead, that's what I am using for my N7

My wifi tether is still turning off when pluggin in power and after about 15 - 20 mins of use. Any suggestions? I've tried all these things and none work.
I have 2 GS3s, both stock rooted to get the wifi tether working and this is only happening on one of them.
OK not for nothing but I can't even get this to work at all is there a update for the app ?

*Edit* Wi-Fi sleep policy is set to never.
It seems like the Wi-Fi goes to "sleep" on the DHD. I installed VLC Remote a little while ago, and after 1-2 minutes the controller will not work. I had to quit the app and reconnect for it to work.
I did a test by pinging the DHD from my computer while the VLC Remote was active, turned off the screen several times. It worked perfect!
I then stopped the pinging and after 1-2 minutes the VLC Remote stopped responding. I pressed the pause button several times, nothing happened.
Then I started the ping back up (the VLC Remote was still open) and after a 2-3 "Request canceled" (no ping reply back from the phone) it got a response from the ping and the VLC Remote worked again.
Is there any way to make the Wi-Fi not go to "sleep"? It's annoying me to stop/start the remote every time I want to pause the movie.
I tried turning Best Wi-Fi performance on, but that didn't help
Thanks!
select the wifi settings, then press the menu button and select advanced, change the wifi sleep policy to never and your laughing

Thanks for the reply fkofilee. It's already set to "never". Updated the original post and title with it.
I restarted the phone and did some more testing.
As long as the screen is on there are no problems (VLC Remote responds), but when I hit the on/off button on the top of the phone to turn the screen off and turn the screen back on after a couple of minutes, VLC Remote will not respond. I have to ping the phone for VLC Remote to respond again.
Any suggestions?
same here, have to disconnect/connect to wifi to get it going again. Really frustrating when my exchangesync fails. Work as a IT-administrator and have to get serverfails reported as soon as possible.

I also have this issue its so annoying. I could be connected to wifi and have bars and then go to download something from the market it will pause and when I go into network setting its says wifi is authenticating but it doesnt change so I have to turn off and back on to get it working again. I had a Iphone 3gs and never had wifi issues like this.

I don't think we have the same problem. Downloading seems fine. When I ping it (while running VLC Remote), it works fine. I can shut the screen off, turn it back on 10 min later and it works fine. It seems like it goes into a type of "sleep mode" when there is no active traffic to/from the phone.
I sent an e-mail to HTC about this problem. I'll keep you guys updated.
Dont know if you do or are into mods but if you root your phone and flash clockwork mod you could try and push a new wifi module using root explorer...or even flash a custom rom...Pretty sure this would fix it..
Depends how much you know about this stuff though..
I can help you through it if you want to...some people dont want to though and I cant blame them...

Thanks rixsta! I'm gonna do a custom ROM, but I'm gonna wait until Gingerbread is released and custom ROMs have been made for that.
Are you up for testing if this is a problem on your ROM? If so, is this fixed with a new wifi module?
*Edit* With LeeDroid 1.2 and Buzz 1,22Ghz v1.0.2 it fixed the problem! I also sent a mail to HTC and they have forwarded it to the programmers.

I'm using leedroid's Rom so can't test and I've just got it working great..but...why don't you just root with visionary and pay £2.50 for root explorer and move a new WiFi module...that's all you need..
Up to you really..you could use Apache oc kernel...you will need to s off with this method and buy setcpu from the market...if your going to be doing custom roms in the future then you will need to do this anyways...if you need help let me know...I can tell you where to get the WiFi file from...

Suggestions?

Any news regarding this issue?
I'm rooted and whenever I install and try to run wifi tether it starts with errors. I've tried multiple versions and they all keep doing the same thing. Anyone have a fix or have any ideas?

hmm, which root method did you use?? i used the 1 by zedomax, and my wifi tether works perfectly, no issues... just installed, and accepted SU permissions...

I started a thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1268090 because of this same issue. I'm assuming that is what led to the video on how to install the beta 6 version, but I'm still getting an error for wifi encryption, so for now i am turning on the access-control and not Having any more errors. I originally thought it was an compatibility issue with an app, but it looks to me it has more to do with the root method. lets give them time, it'll only get better.
Huh, guess I'm just failing tonight. I've tried every apk posted in the root thread and i can find. Can't get any tethering connections going. the only difference between me and the video is I don't have the hotspot message in my notification drop down. My root works fine and my laptop sees the ad hoc network (i change the name and the new network ssid comes up).
This is the first time I've ecer had problems with wifi tether on an android device

Update your super user and give it a try.
I'm starting with errors and the error is actually encryption. If I start without encryption I can tether just fine - Only when I start with encryption enabled does it kick out any issues.
Any ideas?
You might want to file a bug report with the project. I'm sure that we are missing something in the kernel but don't know what or how to find out....
Is anyone able to get 4G speeds while tethering? It seems to be really slow on a Windows 7 notebook I've tried with. Getting around 0.28 mbps down and 0.79 mbps up. Speedtest on the phone gets 10/1.5. I'm right by a tower. Haven't tried with my iMac which is located in an area with weak 4G coverage that cuts in and out.
3G is fine by the way when it's good. Getting 1.5/0.5 or faster.
any update
Im having the EXACT same problem. Im curious if you or anyone else has got this fixed yet?

Also,

May not solve the issue for you, but it did for me when I would use Wi-Fi tether app and phone would restart. Uninstall Wi-Fi tether app. Power your device down, remove the backing, then remove battery followed by SIM card. Doesn't have to be out long. The idea is to just remove it and make sure when you put the SIM back in that it clicks in place.
Put the phone back together and turn the phone on. Reinstall Wi-Fi tether and you should be good to go. Hope this helps.

Update: This did not solve this issue. Anybody else ever have this issue. It does hinder my tethering, but it is rather annoying.
Hurley, I am also having the same issue. I am also using the franco kernel, but I am on the stock 4.0.4 rom.
Ok I had the same issues as well with my Galaxy Nexus and all you should have to do is uncheck the option in settings WiFi-driver reload. Once I did that I was on WiFi and used WiFi Tether to test which is worked and then I turned it off and my phone wouldn't connect to my WiFi at home so I had to toggle it in the settings. Hope this helps
Having the same problem here. I'll try disabling the force driver restart.

Turned the wifi off and it actually worked! Thanks sling!
No problem.
With Sprints version there was no need to turn off wifi first so I'm thinking its a bug that Samsung needs to address on are build.
When connected and you try youtube - anything data related a pop up will display letting you know wifi will be enabled allshare needs to restart.
Let it do its thing connection will re-establish .
Wow, this thing really does not work well. Wifi turns on by itself randomly and when it's on, i can't reconnect.

Ha I figured it out.
Simply Start Allshare app using pulldown Toggle.
Doing it that way will allow for app start when wifis already enabled no more crash will be had
Hmm it works intermittently for me. Hopefully the next software update will change that
Hmm I was never able to get it to work. Not with my note2 or s3. I'm starting to think maybe I have a bad dongle.
One question when you press the reset button on the dongle and the indicator light turns blue does it stay blue or does it turn back to red pretty quickly?
I know it's not wifi tethering, but hey this is a bandaid for me. Clockwork Mod Tether works perfect, regardless of if the play store says it's compatible.

I think I tried that one and got the usual error (in stock form). Give it a whirl and let us know though. I just started going down the list installing a bunch of tethering apps until I found one or a few that worked.
is this still working for you guys? reviews seems mixed on the play store

I'm going to answer my own question and confirm that it still works post-update. I switched over to using the Wifi/USB Tether hack for a while, but am now back to using CWM Tether. In strong signal areas the hack works fantastic, but I find that out in the country with one bar it's very iffy. Perhaps this is an issue of the phone going in and out of data service and the connection not being restored gracefully when that happens? Whatever the case, CWM doesn't seem to have this same problem and maintains a fairly continuous connection without me having to restart my phone repeatedly.
