Verizon GN Wi-fi Hotspot Problems Stock Non-Rooted - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I've been searching around and I don't see anyone else having this problem. I have kept my galaxy nexus stock since I purchased it the day it came out. I started paying for tethering this week and I've been having a huge problem with it.
When I enable the wi-fi hotspot for the first time it works excellently. I get amazing 20Mbs down and everything is rainbows an ponies. If I then disable it and enable it again I am able to connect to the hotspot just fine but I get no internet connection.
I'm starting to think it's possible I have a defective device and might need to get it swapped out. I've seen a few blog posts that seem to mention issues with the Verizon nexus wi-fi hotspot but no real fourm activity regarding it.
My other option is to wait for the Jelly Bean update and see if anything gets better. Or rooting and seeing if it happens to work. I'd rather root for fun though not to get something I'm paying out the ass for to work.
Thanks for any help

[Q] rooted 3g drop on wireless tether.

Im running Skyraider 3.5 sence with s-off radio 2.15.0.07.28 build 3.26.605.1
Im running into a problem with wireless tether 2.0.5 pre 14 or any version will stop working after a few mins. i have looked for something on here but I have been unable to find a fix. So I'm wondering if there is one. If there is im sorry for the repost. i can't seem to figure it out.
If any knows the right way to fix this im all ears.
This was one of the biggest reasons for rooting my phone. It worked great before 2.2 came out. Once I went to 2.2 rooted it stoped completely. I rooted into 2.2 using a method from Mejdam on youtube. I even tried the stock method that was on here to go back to 2.2. Then rerooted with unrev. still nothing.
Thanks.

I seldom ever use my wifi tethering...but when I noticed the version number in your post, I decided to upgrade, and found 2.0.5 RC1. I decided to test this new version out because last time I used wifi tether, it worked fine. I think I was using pre-10 (it came with SkyRaider 3.3). Well, I am noticing the same problem. It starts out just fine, really fast & responsive, then after a minute or so it goes intermittent, the 3G icon comes and goes and it just becomes worthless. We are both using SkyRaider 3.5. My baseband radio is newer though.
Anyone else?
UPDATE: if you have a file: "\system\etc\sysctl.conf" then rename it, reboot your phone and try wifi tethering again. This fixed this problem for me.

Rename the "sysctl.conf" to what?
I've also been having this problem for a long time now and so far haven't found any fixes.
I looked for the file you are talking about and cannot find it using Root Explorer, either I don't have it or it's hiding really well.
Also does anyone know where I can get the stock 3G Hotspot app?
VZ has blocked you on certain tethering traffic due to 3g abuse without the tethering contact ($20/mo).
I have experienced VZ blocking various 3g tethering activity on my previous phones. This block is based on the phone's EIS#.
When I changed phones, the block was gone until I spent a couple solid days on my corporate vpn.
I've recently been blocked from my corporate vpn again. I don't know what steps I'll take to get it re-enabled, but I suspect I'll enable their tether contract, to open my access, but shortly cancel (pro rate cost).
I don't know when i'll take time to do this..
Let me know if you have success with this.

I had a gut feeling that VW had something to do with it once 2.2 came out and they offered the 3g hotspot for $25. Ill keep looking to see if anyone is able to get around it. I'm not gunna hold my breath though.
It's not a 2.2 thing our a smart phone thing. This has existed since my first experience in 2004, on a basic cell phone tethering with 1X.
It's easier for VZ to block us rather than hold us to the End User Agreement.
I should be able to call VZ soon to enable their tethering, see if it opens my access, then cancel the tethering service for a prorate charge of 1 day.. By the weekend.

From what I recall reading in the past, Verizon cannot tell if you are tethering when using the 3rd party wifi tethering application. Are your comments based on your own experience, or can you supply a link that suggests Verizon is blocking our tethering applications.
EDIT: Just FYI, I found another thread, specifically on this subject:

I just renamed mine to "sysctl.conf.bak"
The file above was added by myself back when first posted that it would "increase your 3G speeds." And it actually did for me. But I suspected it when I tested the latest version of the wifi tethering application. When I renamed the file, things got instantly better as far as tethering goes... I have been using my wireless tether application for a little over an hour now with absolutely no problems.
So this was a guess on my part, but my tethering is now working fine and not dropping my connection. I hope this works for you as it has for me. If you don't have the file on your phone, then it's time to look elsewhere.
(don't forget to reboot after renaming the file)

My comments point-out that VZ can safely assume you're abusing tethering by the amount of data used within a certain timeframe. -- an amount that is not typically possible when only using phone and apps (non-tethering traffic).
Thinking back on the first time I encountered this in 2004, I did call VZ tech support. This was their answer.-

Data connection issues

The past day or so my Epic has been having issues staying connected to Sprint's 3G data network.
I get error code 67 (saying that my Sprint data service username/password is incorrect).
I used to get this with my Evo, so I don't think it's a ROM issue, but I wanted to see if anyone else was getting similar issues these past few days.
I'm running SRF 1.1.0 if it makes any difference.
It also seems to happen on days I'm using Sprint hotspot, so maybe that's causing a problem? (I have tethering on my plan, so it shouldn't, but you never know).
Apparently Update Profile is supposed to resolve issues like this (according to some Googling I've done) but that feature (along with PRL update) is still down for me.
Hopefully Sprint is just experiencing technical difficulties and this will all pass with time, but if not, am I just gonna have to reflash?

If you're rooted; why are you paying for the tethering plan? You could install Wifi Tether for Root and save $30 a month.
Maybe try to download that app (in the market) and use that to share the net to see if you get the same issue.
Might be a good step in determining if the hot spot is the issue; which because its a sprint app... it very well may be.
Good luck

Well, I didn't root it at first, and I needed tethering.
And it's still enabled because WiFi tether doesn't work that well for me.
It'll stay up for 10 minutes or so, then crash my phone.
Which, considering SRF has Journaling Off, isn't good – so I'd rather stick to using Sprint Hotspot if it means I don't have to worry (as much) about data corruption.
Just curious if anyone else has ever gotten that error code, and if it went away on its own or not.

Hmmm; I use it for hours.
here is a thread talking about it at another site:

maybe that could help shed some insight as a bunch of people experienced it.

Profile update seems to be the way to fix it, so I guess I'll just have to wait until Sprint fixes the PRL/Profile update issue the Epic is having (which Sprint confirmed yesterday is real on their support forums).

[Q] Wifi Tethering issues, anyone else having any?

Hi,
I'm an Android user for more than a year now and ever since I have the Galaxy Nexus the tethering is been giving me headaches. it seems to connect to my laptop but after a while it just stops to work. I can't browse any site or download anything from my laptop but this does seem to work on the Nexus.
I've resetted the phone to factory settings but this didn't solve it. I've also noticed that disconnecting and reconnecting to the wifi tethering helps even though I do have connectivity problems sometimes.
is anyone else experiencing the same issue?
I'm on the UK 3 network and the Nexus is not rooted and the unbranded version.
before the galaxy nexus I was using the HTC Desire (rooted etc) but never had the same weird disconnecting issue..
I have not tried it yet

Yes, having the same issues here as we speak. All the issues and fixes above I am experiencing. I'm from Australia on the Optus network.
I put my sim into a Huawei E585 and had no issue whatsoever, so seems to definitely be a phone issue....hopefully a software issue which will be fixed soon as I its extremely annoying as you know!
I'm awaiting the 4.0.2 or 4.0.3 update now, this seems to solve several issues and they also mentioned tethering in it. let's just wait it out now
I haven't received any update on the Galaxy Nexus yet, still running 4.0.1, can anyone please verify if they are having issues running ICS 4.0.2 or newer on their handsets while tethering?
I wonder if the networks have found a way to remotely block tethering access? I say this because I have an HTC Desire on Orange which will no longer load anything when using Wi-Fi tethering.
My Galaxy Nexus is fine though. I'm on the One Plan with Three which includes unlimited data and tethering (says so in the small print of the contract). I'd say contact Three if you're on the one plan and ask for their help.

Guess you didn't really properly read all messages,
I don't have any probs if I tether from my desire, I have an All you can eat data on Three,
the thing is it just stops working and I cannot ping my Nexus from my computer. according to the change log for the nexus they did say to fix some wifi issues etc with updates..
So which version are you running???
I am running 4.0.2, Samsung galaxy nexus, and tehering is not working. Anyone have a solution to this problem?
Temporary solution: (Click thanks! )
Google knows about the ICS tethering problem and this is their temporary solution.
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
You must "allow" you computer after you've connected to the hotspot. See this thread for more.
I am experience the same issue on my Galaxy Nexus, it's currently running 4.0.2 and Baseband I9250UGLA4.
my solution to the issue at the moment it's using USB tethering.
I suggest PdaNet, you can find it at Google Play and it's free =)
i am not using the stock wifi tethering feature on ICS instead i'm using FoxFi and at times the timeout issue will show up but if i restart the hotpot a few times, it seems to be working fine again...
i'm not sure if i am any good help to anyone but that's my experience...
FWIW, I have not had any issue with this. I tried tethering for the first time the other day with my Wi-Fi-only tablet for an hour and it Just Worked.

[Q] Wifi Tethering with Mac

Hey guys I am having problems with the wifi hotspot on my Nexus with my Mac. It will connect fine but after about 5 min the internet will cut out but still remain connected. Have no problems with my iPhone 4 from work so it is something to do with the phone. Any ideas on how to fix it? Very frustrating.

Are you on 4.0.1? I heard that .1 has some kind of issues with tethering taht were solved in newer builds. Did you try to tether to some other computer?
Yeah I am on 4.0.1. Have not tried other computer. Have found turning location services off fixes the problem. Is it hard to flash to yakju build so I can get 4.0.2? Is there any way to do this to void my warranty?

IMHO this whole yakju-better-than-yakjusomething is over hyped. There were threads where yakjusomething builds got updates, and yakju didn't. I wouldn't bother my self to wipe phone and flash other builds If I were you, well I'm not going to do that since I have yakjuxw or something similar It's still a Nexus, you WILL get any update as soon as it will be possible! Earlier I had Nexus S i9023 with SLCD screen (I loved that screen BTW) and I was getting updates couple of weeks after Android sites started to write about them. It looks like Google disabled updates after battery complains from users. For some time now I haven't heard about anyone getting .3 or .2 update to any SGN. Just my thoughts, sorry for little OT
Thanks again for the reply. Yeah I might just leave it as it is until I get the update. Turning location services off doesn't seem to fix the problem it is still disconnecting. Will just use my iPhone 4 for now :-(
Have now also found that I can not connect the nexus through bluetooth either. The Mac won't even recognise it. Any way around this? Grrrr

Thanks mate . Bluetooth is working ok now. Have found an app called wifi hotspot which seems to be holding the connection.
im also having the exact same issue. i'm on att. running an AOSP custom 4.0.3 Rom. I tried using att's tether apn and it keeps reverting back to Cingular 410, however i dont believe this is the issue, i think its related to the OS itself. is it Mac related? i have no other computers to test it with :-/
Maybe this: https://plus.google.com/103583939320326217147/posts/1Yy1jb9z4TA will help? In the post there is a zip for mac
Hey mate thanks for the link unfortunately it doesn't make a difference and for some reason the net won't work on wifi hotspot at all now. It connects but that is it :-(.
I didn't have time to really look into it, but I have some idea. Can you try how will it work when you disable security in settings? I mean make it an open network for, a second and try some browsing
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
that seemed to work on my nexus one and iphone 4 when i tethered. tried it with my gnex, same results, still showing connected, but no internet access after 5-15 min. i checked the status log of wifi tether for android, as it was doing the same thing with this app, and the it showed the wifi interface disconnecting by itself, i didn't do anything. Definitely OS related. Interestingly enough, this has happened both on the stock kernel and this franco 9.2 i'm running right now. Likewise with stock rom and this my current rom. so who knows.....very annoying though. :-/
Ok, with the network open on the Nexus the connection is fine on my Mac. As soon as I enable security though I have problems. Thanks heaps for the help so far but is there any solution available for this? Not real keen on leaving my connection open.
Sorry to bump. I'm having this issue as well. Verizon Galaxy Nexus on 4.0.2. My MacBook Pro connects to the hotspot fine and works for a bit, but then stops working. I can run network diagnostics to make it work again, but I have to keep doing that every 5-10 minutes or so and it makes it too annoying to use.
My iPad 2, iPhone 4, TouchPad, and mom's Windows laptop works just fine and never have these issues. It's only my MacBook. Anybody find a solution yet?
Exactly the same problem here.. Galaxy Nexus tethered wifi macbook pro running 10.7.2. Stays connected, but stopps passing any packets. Ipad, and other devices are still connected working properly, and the phone itself can use the LTE data connection. I've tried stock 4.0.2, as well as AOKP 4.0.3 latest build.. no luck. I've also tried both the native AP and android-wifi-tether too. Any help would be appreciated and rewarded.
---------- Post added at 04:19 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:13 PM ----------
PS - I even have the tethering option enabled on my Verizon account... (in case you were thinking it had something to do with big red blocking data)
I am still suffering this problem too. :-(. It is a real issue when I work outside the office a lot and do not have any problems with my work Iphone 4. I found pdanet works connected by USB but you can not access secure sites on the free version. Is there good alternative to pdanet?
hey guys. i now use an open network when i tether. it seems to keep a stable internet connection (packets transferring). the longest i've maintained a working tethering connection has been 2 hours....so it seemed good enough for me. Let me know how u guys fair if u do try an open network. still a weird issue imo that doesn't have too many solutions or even suggestions in the xda community (probably cause not many are tethering?). gl.
Hey, when I put my phone to an open connection mine is stable too. Must be something to do with the security. Wish there was a solution, I can't keep mine open the whole time :-(.
Anyone found a fix for this yet? Just about to return mine, tired of it not working. Have updated to 4.02 and my Mac to 10.7.3

[Q] Wifi loses connectivity after period of inactivity

Hello,
I've searched around the Epic 4G Touch forums as best I could, but sadly I couldn't find anything that was exactly this problem (although I found some interesting articles about wifi sleep time but they don't seem to apply). I'm experiencing an annoying issue where I can connect Wifi just fine, but if the phone is left for a small period of time (~10 minutes), wifi appears as if it's still connected, however it cannot send/receive data. When this happens, the wifi status says it's "connected", but there is no data connection. The only way to to get the data back is to turn off wifi, wait for 3/4G connection to initialize, then turn Wifi back on to refresh it...then it's fine again until I set the phone down again.
I had this problem on stock EL29, so I rooted and flashed Phantom Blazer ROM (very cool ROM, but I'm still experiencing the same issue). After reading the threads on here about wifi sleep times (apparently they're backwards with ICS roms), I've experimented with every setting, yet I still have the same issue--Wifi is fine as long as I'm using the phone, I set it down, after about 10 minutes pick it back up, says it's still connected, but no data connection.
has anybody experienced this problem with this phone? I'm about to unroot my phone/go back to factory so I can take it in to a Sprint store, the problem is they (trying not to be offensive) don't seem to know very much about this device. I thought I'd ask the pros before I return it, get an iPhone, and have to eat my words about how cool Android is vs. iPhone in front of all my friends. I'm hoping there's a reliable ROM or app that can resolve this vs. having to just replace the device!
Thanks for your help!
I'm not the only one
I'm not the only one with this problem:
edit: I can't post links to androidforums.com or anywhere else, but this same problem is all over the interwebs and nobody has a solution.
I'm sure it's not my router as my ASUS tablet/laptops/girlfriend's iPhone experiences no connectivity problems. I'm thinking this is a hardware problem with some of these devices. I will unroot/reset to factory tonight and let you know what happens.
What channel is your router on? And what type is it A/B/G/N?
This is s known TW ICS bug, most likely kernel related. Almost everyone is having this issue and there is no fix until Samsung decides to repair it. There are quite a few posts similar to this one. If you're using XDA's search function, it's not very good. Try using Google next time and search XDA that way.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Xparent ICS Tapatalk 2
Hey guys, thanks for the response. Just before I unrooted/reset to factory I tried one last solution--download an app called "Wifi Fixer". It has resolved a lot of these problems. It's not 100%, but after testing it for a day so far, I've only had to manually refresh the connection once or twice. It's a lot better, even liveable, and I won't be resetting to factory afterall, at least not until Samsung provides an update. So if anyone is having the same problem, try Wifi Fixer, hopefully it gives you a similar level of success...I'm not super happy about having to run another background process all the time, but it doesn't seem to affect battery, and the fix it provides is worth it to me.
Cheers!
Huh - a couple of things. Noticed this problem crept back in FF18 and didn't know why until I went back and checked the wpa_supplicant.conf that I'm using. The line ap_scan=2 was missing; after adding it back in the signal strength is back to full and stable.
I'll bump the thread but it appears the config changes here still hold after all:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1569348
This should also avoid having the WiFi fixer there as you can specify the country in wpa_supplicant.conf manually.
Thanks for looking in to this! A couple questions from a noob like me though:
When you say the problem crept back in FF18 ... what does that mean? Is that something that exists in the "stock" version of the Epic 4G touch from Sprint?
The manual config file tweaks you're describing ... is that something I can perform myself?
Basically I'm wondering if it's "safe" to revert to stock in order to get consistent wifi signal, or if it's something I'm experiencing because of the ROM I'm using.
Thanks!
