How to Make Search Capacitive Button into Task Manager - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Just as I hold the menu button to have the recent tasks show up, is there a way to make the capacitive search button be the task manager?
I am currently on CM9
Will this work on CM9?: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1558220

Sounds like you need to learn some advanced scripting.
There must be values somewhere in the ROM that you can copy and paste somewhere.
Unpack everything and find it? Lol.
Good luck!
(there's an app out there, 'google search bar', that allows you to long-press the search button to start the gesture search app. I would study the script in that program, and find the long-press actions... and go from there)

[Q] How to change the search key's long press functionality?

Soo, I've searched and searched and I can't seem to find the answer to this, or the keywords i'm using are too generic, anyway..
What I'd like to know is it possible to change the functionality of the EVO's search button?
When I long press the search button i'd like to have Bing's voice search app to come up... I have the Bing app already installed on the phone....
thanks..
What ever is being used now... Go to manage applications.. Find tyre search app that opens now and clear defaults. Then press the search button and you should be able to change it.

Htc sense question

Okay I have 2 questions. How do I get to personalize button to serve it original function? And how do I get the www/com button on the hardware keyboard to say its original function as well?
Use the attached program. I can't remeber where I saw it (either somewhere on xda or another forum). I decided I like CM7 better so I haven't used it for awhile. I have no idea on your other issue.
Well after I typed this on my phone, I can't attach a file. When I get to computer will upload on this thread

Use these 2 APKs. The keylogger will tell you the value of the button, then the button mapper can change what that value does.

Sorry about the delay
Here is what I have for the personalize button.
With the launchkey app i cant seem to get it to serve the "Personalize" function. It just gives me a menu when i use it... Could you explain how exactly you get it working?
Yes, once you run the program - you need to set which application you want the program to use. Once set, then when you press the button on the screen, that application will be launched.

[Guide] Change the user buttons to home and back

I was looking to change the user configurable buttons on my Desire Z but couldn't find a easy guide or simple solution. I started to experiment a bit. This is what I found out:
To change the layout you only need to things:
1. a rooted phone
2. A program like Root explorer with R/W permissions
Then do the following:
Go to system/usr/keylayout and open the file for the layout you are using in a text editor (in my case this was the WWE version)
I then changed 'user 1' to 'HOME' and 'user 2' to 'BACK'.
I did a soft reset and I now use the user 1 button to go to the home screen and the user 2 button to go back
note: This guide is problably written a 1000 times but I couldn't find it so I hope it's my first real (small) contribution

Thanks for the guide! And actually, this method can provide some neat tricks!
For example, I personally never use the search button. So instead, I can change the Search key to USER1 and now the search key is a User-Assignable button!
EDIT: It appears that the Search hardware key and the Search touchkey have different key mapping ID. But the virtual Search touchkey doesn't seem to be listed in keylayout at all. Weird.
There's an app for that
Also, AFAIK it should be possible to remap the capacitive search button.

The capacitive search button is 217, which is the same as the hardware search button. But my hardware button is doing what I assigned it, while my capacitive one is not doing anything.
It's either not linking, or my phone's capacitive search button is broken.
How can I make the search key to open recent app (the one where u hold home key and come out a recent app)? Thx

I think it's a bit more difficult, you should look in Andromadus thread where someone did it, there's a zip to download...
edit: here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1516942 the zip is attached, don't know if it works with every rom, surely with andromadus, but we are OT, sorry.

Great App that allows you to create multiple sofkey shortcuts

I am always looking for Info for good apps, apps that make our phones function even better. Anyways I stumbled upon this app just by doing going through my Apps in the market and finding other apps related or "apps people also installed etc.
It is called home2 home shortcut. What is does it installs as another home launcher but is doesn't replace you current launcher. If you set it as default home it will ask you what launcher you want to use etc. One you do that you can set up the following to open and app and most shortcuts by doing soft key combos
Press home and home again - pick the app that you want to launch when you do the combo
Now click other settings below this above setting
Press home then search key - pick app you want to launch
Press home then back button -pick app etc
Press home and menu button - pick app that you want to launch when you do the combo
Here is a link.

No home2 shortcut does not work. i want to be able to set double click home button to voice search (google now) that app does not allow that
Well you could use nova to launch with a long press on the menu button. You could also flash cm10 instead and allow a long press of home to launch Google now. Nova might also allow home2 to assign an activity like voice search.

It won't do the double click action, but certain AOSP ROMs let you choose a custom action when long pressing the home button.

Want to share some useful information that some people might not know about...
*Problem*Everyone hates holding the home button to muktitask or launch things
*Solution* Using Apex launcher (works in Nova too), go to apex settings, behavior settings, and you can assign almost anything to a gesture. I use double tap and set it to "recent apps". Now, I just double tap anywhere on the home screen and it brings up recent apps with no lag! This has made multitasking 5 times better and so easy. I can also set Google Now to launch by swipe up, swipe down, pinch, etc. I hate the home button for anything besides going to default screen

I would also like this to work with a double press of the home button. I'm on Ktoonzes AOKP.
Ideally:
Press once - Home
Press twice - Google Now <-- what i want.
Long Press - Recent apps <-- currently how it works. I don't want to replace the long press action with search.
I am running tw Rom with trebuchet and home 2 shortcut works perfectly for this function. One Gives me home. double tap gives Google now and hold gives me tasks .
Important step is to disable s voice in settings

Home 2 shortcut works great, but and I have never had a problem with it in the LIH leak or any JB leak for that matter. Make sure you have cleared defaults and have went into s-voice setting and unchecked the home button press brings up S-voice.

As you are probably aware, double tapping the home button will launch S Voice on the Galaxy S3. Unfortunately, Samsung did not include a way to re-assign this button for a different function if you don't fancy the S Voice app. Instead, all they did was give you a way to disable the hone button double tap. Well here is a way for you to re-assign the home button double tap without the need for any rooting or modding at all.
Step 1) Go into the S Voice settings and uncheck the Launch SVoice box. This will keep S Voice from launching when you double tap the home button.
Step 2) Install Home2 Shortcut from the Play Store
Step 3) Open Home2 Shortcut and configure it to launch the app of your choosing with a double tap of the home button. The app is pretty self explanatory and setting it up will be pretty straight forward. NOTE: When you get to the end, after you tap "close" it will ask you to set as default. Select Home2Launcher as the default.
Hope this helps anyone who didn't know how to do this. I am currently running CM10, and am using this to launch Google Now with a double tap of the home button.

Awesome thread! Now is there any way to set up what launches when you long press the menu button? I see in the "other key settings" for home2 it has long press shortcuts for a "search" key and "camera" key..

Why did you quote me? That is exactly what I told people to do and is covered as nauseum in multiple posts on XDA. I didn't get into detail because people should search instead of asking the same question a million times.

Fantastic!! Thanks to everyone who mentioned on how to set this up! :good:
To do this without any extra apps would require a very small edit to android.policy.jar.
I think I experimented with it on ICS and successfully got it working. I have yet to do it on Jelly Bean though.
Just long press on home button and hit the g. now to replace s voice for Bluetooth voice dial
