Galaxy S3 or not that is the Question. - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I am using the Galaxy Nexus with Jelly Bean Stock, now, do you guys think Galaxy S3 is worth it to throw out Jelly Bean and move to ICS in GS3?
I am asking this because I am planning to change my phone to GS3...
any ideas?

The SGSIII does have better specs than the Gnex, but personally I couldn't give up Google Now. You shouldn't have a problem finding custom builds of JB for the SGSIII. Some/many may be in beta stage and will get more stable after a while, so you could wait and not have to update as frequently or you could take the plunge and do the work. Afaik Samsung has not yet said anything official about the SIII getting JB but if I were a betting man I would bet it will eventually see it.
Edit: Wait it's important to mention that the VZW variant has a locked bootloader, so no custom firmware. Yet. Not sure what carrier you are on.

hold your GN for 3 4 months if you want JB. Than change to S3.
Simple!

I too was planing to change to GS3 but also found that almost similar thing i get with my SGN and added is super JB so decided to wait for 2 months and see what is gonna be better GS3 or Iphone 5 which is yet to come in abt 3 months i wud choose one of it
U can wait as per me but u r the boss

Why "upgrade" from a dual core device to another dual core? Wait for a good quad device to be on your carrier then upgrade

We just had a leak for ICS. So if anything it will be ICS. And don't expect official jb for about 2-3 months after international gets it. At&t is really slow with it.

Here's a quick Youtube video of the new Galaxy S3 update that will trickle out eventually for US carriers. This should answer most of your questions. It's only available for International as of now:

[Q] multi tasking on the us variant gs3?

was just wondering why the heck does the galaxy s2 have a version of the new 4.1.2 update with all the new goodies including the new note 2 multi tasking option when the us variants gs3's still havent seen anything? i can understand waiting around for a legit 4.1.2 firmware to take some time, but really? the galaxy s2? before the 3?

In assuming when 4.1.1 came, Samsung said that the s3 had to get it first and as they were working on it, 4.1.2 released and they just went with that for the s2 and others

but the first to get it was the international gs3, i figured the us variants were next in line, not the s2, this boggles my mind im shocked noone was able to port it to the our phones yet, really lost on this topic
Not soon ... they need to sell Note 2 too.
They will definitely push it back.

i mean hey i understand that the official firmware being held back and all but the coding for the international galaxy s3 and galaxy s2 before us variants was made possible?, ok the international version, but now the s2? before our 3?...listen i get it, im pretty much a noob here on dev but not anywhere else im involved in, trust me, which isnt really much phones but i respect and think everyone on here are geniuses and are some of the best contributors to the android community ..just, really? lol the s2? now i had the s2, loved it to death, but have been on the s3 tmoble for a minute and am shocked the the multi tasking and other great features arent made possible..just find it to be strange is all.
yea i figured no one had any idea..thanks anyway

Thinking about downgrading Phones to get AOSP

I currently have a HTC One and am thinking about selling it, pocketing most of the money and getting the Galaxy nexus. I really really want a stable AOSP build and the HTC one simply does not have one yet. What are your guy's opinion on making this switch? and how are the ROMS and Kernals for you guys?

Well since the One is better than the Nexus it would be a easy disicion for me. I think since the play store version is released the builds will come in in no time. I think it is only a matter of time before the aosp custom roms will come. The Galaxy Nexus has awesome kernel and ROM support since it is a Nexus phone. Some developers are leaving for the Nexus 4 but this phone is stille alive and there is plenty of development going on.

Read the rom/kernel Dev threads and see the comments. I suggest you wait, new nexus coming out. Meditate before coming back to the light (aka lite) side of the Force.

Why the galaxy nexus? Unless your on Verizon id go with the nexus 4 its about the same as the one.
I have a old Verizon gnex. Its super laggy on 4.2.2 I would reccomend faux kernel on 4.1.2 that is pretty fast

Will the s3 ever see android 4.4?

I'm sure there's great features to come with it, but will we need newer devices?

I highly doubt we will see an official OTA
Unless it can't be done someone's bound to try

4.3 I'm pretty sure we'll get

Our hardware becomes older and older day by day so is there any point to Android 4.4 on our S3's?

I had replied to Cnexus 2 above your response in that thread. I actually posted in another thread beating on when it would be asked if we would get it.
My 4 year old OG epic 4g has CM10 running on it, a phone that stopped receiving updates at gingerbread... So hardware while it is a factor can still run latest android versions. It's all up the creative minds of developers.

The galaxy S3 will be getting 4.3 in October
But I don't think it will officially get 4.4. However does officially really matter, when you can just get it unofficially?
Also by the time carriers actually start releasing 4.4 the gs3 will be a third or even fourth tier phone in the series
Also I like the idea of KitKat it was Google one upping all those people who thought they could predict them in a creative way that also set up more advertising ect...
Eh, not holding my breath. I would rather get it unofficially IMO. Nice to brag to my friends or others
"here look, I'm running the latest of android"......and your not:laugh:

The Galaxy S3 will but ours won't. Always always always when they announce updates forthcoming they are talking about the international versions. It is then up to Samsung and the carriers to invest resources to put them on US phones. Typically this takes several months IF the carrier is interested. AT&T just got 4.1.2 and it is not a pushed update.
As for 4.4 I have no doubts about the S3 getting that version but you will be asking the same hypothetical question then about 5.0.
I could see the s3 getting Kitkat, but not for a while after all of the other phones. Just because the s3 was a very successful phone and they're still being sold like crazy. Anyways, I hope I'll have Kitkat on my s5 on release .

Galaxy S phones have always had two major updates (Galaxy S1 got Froyo and Gingerbread, S2 got ICS and JB. Since Android has had multiple versions of Jelly Bean, it is hard to say whether or not they think of Jelly Bean 4.1 and Jelly Bean 4.3 as two major updates for the Galaxy S3, but if not, then it is likely we will get Android 4.4 KitKat.

Since we don't even have a clue about a release date for 4.4 I would not venture a guess.

Galaxy S3 - Kitkat Discussion Thread

KitKat has been confirmed for the Galaxy S3 as I had suspected. Use this to discuss Kitkat, and post any relevant information to the release.

So I read a report. May not be real but I don't see what lends it to being fake. The AT&T Galaxy S3 may be updated to Kitkat.. Which means us here at d2tmo should also get it if this holds true.
You decide. Also post anything you find relating to Kitkat on the S3 officially. Thanks!

Samsung has confirmed that the S3 will get kitkat. Now its just a matter of waiting for the update to be finished, sent to T-Mobile to be approved, and then pushed out.
So apparently I cant post links yet but if you go to the android and me website, they have an article with a link to the press statement made by Samsung.
Based on the devices on the list, we will probably have to wait a while, at least a month or two is my guess, just considering how new each device is.
Sidenote: if you have a Nexus 5, why do you care about the S3???
Not a rumor, its been confirmed that all U.S S3 variants will be 4.4.2 It makes a lot of sense for samsung to still update firmware on the still pretty popular and 2 year old device like ours. The only thing that could knock my S3 off its pedestal could be the S5, so I'm waiting for Feb 24th to come and see if it seduces me enough to jump on it
They started rolling out kit kat yssterday. I dontvknow how long for the s3 to get it. But its about time we get it.
Updated to reflect the current release information!
What's the over/under on the likelihood that Knox has undergone a major revamp to try and make it harder to crack in the next release?
I really like my SGS3, but after all of the crap Samsung has pulled against the modding community, I think this will be my last Samsung device.

I appreciate that show of support against samsung. I approve of this message.
I'm just curious why anybody cares about touch wiz kitkat? I've used a few different kitkat roms now including cm11 and they all work pretty well. A few have some quirks but overall they've been easily reliable enough to use everyday. Other than wifi calling what else do you like about TW versus anything else?

I agree with your sentiment. WIFI calling is the only reason I use TW and now, with multiboot, I can have a TW ROM as a secondary ROM and run CM11/AOKP KK as my daily driver.
I'm sure there's a lot of other folks who prefer TW to AOSP - different strokes for different folks.
I've never really liked TW but I'm curious to see how they integrate TW S voice with kit kat Google now.
Sent from my Liquid t999l
Its not that TW is bad by all means...rather its KNOX and the excessive bloat it comes with. There are much worse things than Touchwiz trust me.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Since I posted my other response I've ended up going back to TW 4.3. I didn't know this until I tried it but aosp doesn't have tv out like TW does, at least not using the hd I cable I already have. I miss some of the aosp features but I really don't notice any difference between kitkat and jellybean.
kitkat is officially rolling out for the S4. So its the Note 3 and S4 already with updates. Could the S3 be next or would they go for the Note 2 first and leave us last?

I would say a couple months the most
Now is when the s4 is getting kit Kat wow. It's all about market strategy. We probably will get it at the earliest by June. Samsung probably doesn't want a 2 year old device running the same thing too close to when the s5 releases.
