[Q] Any way to disable 4G permanently? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there any way to permanently disable 4G functionality, by removing a lib or apk or some other method?
I'm using an Epic on Boost so 4G isn't an option, but I have still noticed that occasionally my phone will switch to 4G. When that happens I lose data and none of my background syncing works...
EDIT: Probably should have mentioned, I'm running The People's ROM v2.2.1.

Not 100% sure about this so I would wait for someone more experienced to give you another answer. But if you want, make a backup of your rom now and then use titanium backup and uninstall every app with "wimax" in its name. I do believe all the wimax stuff is 4G related. I could be wrong tho.

Did you disable the Sprint Optimizer? Settings> wireless and networks> mobile networks> automatic connections.
If that don't stop it remove easysmart.apk from system on phone.

No 4G on boost?! Is that because you're not using a dummy phone with a wimax radio? I thought as long as I take the ESN from a wimax enabled phone, I'll be able to use the wimax feature. Am I wrong about this? How did you get your phone Epic 4G onto the Boost Network, mbellot?

My (minimal) understanding on the subject is:
1. The donor would need to be a wiimax device
2. In addition to the ESN you would need to also "move" the donor's wiimax MAC address on your Epic since that is what gets "activated" for 4G service.
I have seen topics on #2 floating around, some even on using an alternate wiimax service (FreedomPop, etc) by using the MAC address from a device on that service since they all technically go through Clear towers.
I've never felt the need to pursue wiimax, I'm on WiFi 90% of the time and the rest of the time I've learned to live with 3G.
To your last question (how I got the Epic on Boost), there is a very long thread in the development section here.
FWIW - I solved my problem by moving from TPR to CM11, WiiMax is disabled in the kernel so I don't have to worry about it ever turning on.

[Q] Using 3G and 4G at the same time?

Has anyone been looking into running the 3G and 4G radios simultaneously?
Aside from the benefit of having an additional 1-2MB/s, I get very frustrated when I am in the middle of downloading something and I come into a 4G area. Since the phone will always choose 4G over 3G, the connection resets. I would love to have a way to keep the path available to the app using it.
I guess the same problem exists when Wifi is on and the phone connects to wifi while downloading over 3g or 4g.
Can this be done?
I also would love to see a dev pick this up. It could save my marriage...
great idea. Being able to simultaneously use them and multithread downloads would be awesome.
I'd be happy if someone could fix the transition from 3g to 4g and vice versa. Nothing like downloading a file from your phone and then you lose 4g and it loses the entire session and has to be redownloaded.

That's going to be unlikely, as 3G and 4G are separate networks operated by separate providers (Clear vs Sprint). That's why I want to keep the 3G connection alive.

I don't think clear wire is responsible for everyones 4g, just a select group

I could be wrong but I think sprint just resells clear wimax and calls it america's first 4g network.

When connecting to 4g or Wifi the 3g radio never really shuts off. The data part of the radio goes to sleep while the voice part remains active to send or receive calls or txts.
The 3g data service going to sleep when connected to the others is by design because it is slower than the other two services.
If you don't want the connection to reset turn 4g and wifi off, and only turn them on when you need the greater data speed. (this will also save your battery)
Also another solution is using one of the location based apps that will turn those on and off based off gps location.
Its not that i don't want to use 4g, i wish i could but its not reliable enough. If i have a large download, I'd like it to stay on the reliable network, but i still want to use the fast network.
I agree that the 3g network is still available, I'm hoping there is a way to force a static route over the 3g when needed.

[Q] Removing 3G and Voice Service

I was wondering if it was possible to remove 3g data and voice service from an EVO running 2.2, while keeping Wimax intact.
I'm using my EVO solely on my Clearwire account, and I'm thinking those radios being on, while not in service cause battery hell.
What could be removed in order to achieve this? If possible.
Thanks in advance.
(I could have sworn I did this one time by destroying a Sense build and using an alternative launcher to use the phone, as there was no signal bar, and it no longer said "Searching for service" or "Sprint".)

Can always turn 3g...but I'm sure its possible...its a different radio
buying a hotspot and using wifi
you can use switch pro widget. Has setting to make airplane mode (from its widget) to only turn off voice (also turns off 3g data). Then make another 4g widget and you should be good from there... unless i misunderstood what you wanted...

lost the ability to do simultaneous voice call and internet, how to restore?

Whenever I make a phone call, I notice my 3G signal drops....when I back out of the phone app and go to internet, the page won't load up. It must have happened when I went on a Rom flashing spree and messed it up. I used to be able to look up numbers to places for the person talking to me over the phone. Has this happened to any of you and how do I fix this problem?
CDMA, more specifically, Verizon and Sprint CDMA, doesn't have the ability to use data when on a call.
SDMA [which Verizon is reportedly working on] will.
(Although I fail to see the point because these companies SHOULD be moving to entirely true 4g networks which are all voip)
I've never been able to do both at the same time. I heard that simultaneous Internet while on a call is a feature of 4g. But I'm not in 4g coverage.

Hmm, maybe I was on a 4G connection. It was awhile ago...but I know I was able to do it. Can't test it since I'm on virus' gengersense Rom at the moment
Its not possible to call and be on the net at the same time, as they use the same radio. You need to be connected via 4G or wifi to place a call and surf the internet, ect at the same time.

[Q] Perhaps a Custom Rom for Pageplus?

Sounds like a silly request... but see if my train of thought makes any sense.
Background: I have an evo running on pageplus. I've followed the tut's, and had sporadic 1xRTT data working. I also tested running the phone using the verizon (pp) setup for mobile profiles, being simply one profile rather than the three required for it to connect to data.
What I've discovered (using the debug tool ##DEBUG#) is that using the three data profiles, the phone never authenticates for EVDO, and thus, stays at 1X, but the data does work. Using one profile, the phone does authenticate, but the connection never actually starts. I've read that it is because of the way the sprint provisioning works. Needless to say, at 1X battery life is horrendous.. as the phone is constantly trying to authenticate with EVDO cell bands. With EVDO and 1 profile, battery life is fantastic, but there's no data stream.
SO... I'm not sure if the final step of data startup (where the phone checks to see if it is using a sprint mobile data or verizon mobile data) is part of the ROM, or coded somehow into the radio firmware (or both).
I was thinking of trying to port a rom from, say, an incredible or Eris (any VZW phone).. to see if it'll actually start data with true 3G.
I figure XDA is the best place to ask.. these forums have been indispensable to me for all my phone nerding needs. =-)
Anyone have any thoughts on this?
Bueller.. anyone? anyone? Frye?
I'd really love to flash CM9 or an ICS ROM on my Page Plus carried Evo4G, I had it flashed on when I went through Sprint but, what precautions should Itake and is it even possible? Sorry for the bump, I searched and searched and couldn't find info about this since Feb so I'm finally asking

Hello everyone. New to this forum got a few questions and concerns.

1. Would it have hurt sprint and Samsung to make this phone wimax and lte capable that way we can still have 4g until lte is out in the areas that don't have it?
2. Who is the preferred developer around here? What's the best rom and kernal?
3. Is there a hack to get wimax on this phone temporarily or at the very increased 3g speeds?
4. Any word on when Samsung is going to address the battery drain problem.?
5. Is anyone else having a issue with poor reception.?
That's all I have for now. Y'all have a great day.

Number 1 no i imagine they did this on purpose so that way wimax wouldn't interfere with LTE and 2015 they will longer use wimax
Number 2 imo blazer rom best rom by far if you want jellybean download the latest CM10
Number 3 no there is no 4g hack or 3g tweaks at the moment
Number 4 i haven't seen battery drain download battery stats app and see where the drain is coming from i get six hours on screen time easy
Number 5 once you are in a LTE area you will see improvements to data and signal
If you could somehow take the hardware WiMax radio of an officially CM10 supported WiMax device, install it into your device, and then tweak the WiMax code in cyanogenmod to get it to work I imagine it could be done.
Also you'd need functional WiMax Keys that sprint can use to authenticate the WiMax, so unless you have another WiMax phone on your account that you want remove WiMax functionality from, you have no keys and it won't work. If you did have another WiMax phone, you'd have to take the keys from there and someone figure out how to implement the keys into the software so you can use them to authenticate with Sprint.
However, this would be extremely hard as you'd have to be a hardware expert to install the new radio and a software expert to get it to work.
